Hogwarts.io Writing Month (HogNaNo)

Celebrate creativity, collaboration, and storytelling across the wizarding world!

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

What is HogNaNo?

November is National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo), a global celebration of writing and creativity and Hogwarts.io is joining in with our very own magical twist: HogNaNo!

Throughout November 1-30, players across the site are invited to set a personal writing goal, participate in roleplay threads, in-character journals, or creative writing, and earn House Points, Galleons, and special IC items!

While the focus is on in-character writing, for those that wish to participate in HogNaNo in a more traditional manner, consider using the Shelves for in-character, in-universe writing and the Art Galley for writing that might not be suitable for in-universe, such as fan fiction.

This isn't about perfection: it's about consistency, imagination, and celebrating your growth as a writer.

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

Registration

To join, reply to this thread using the form below:

Tracking: (Link to threads where you have posted in-character or participated in a weekly RP prompt and word count total)
Once you've signed up, you're in! You can start writing anywhere on site: in RP threads, solo stories, journals or even some weekly prepared RP prompts.

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

Word Count Categories

We know everyone writes at their own pace, so you can choose a goal that suits your schedule:
Category
Goal
Description
Casual Quill5,000 wordsFor those dipping their toes in. Every word counts!
Committed Cauldron10,000 wordsA solid goal for active RPers.
Heroic Hippogriff25,000 wordsA challenge for the consistent and determined.
Epic Phoenix50,000 wordsThe full NaNo experience: go for glory!

* You can "upgrade" tiers if you surpass your original goal mid-month!

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

Rewards

IC Rewards (Stackable by Milestone)
Milestone
Reward
5,000 words10 House Points
10,000 words5 Galleons
25,000 words10 Galleons + "Quill of Fire" NANO Collectible Item
50,000 words10 Galleons + Candle Conjuration Spell (Fanale Appare)

House Competition:
Each House's total word count will be tallied at month's end. The winning House earns an extra 100 House Points, divided evenly among participants. If it cannot be divided evenly, this may be slightly higher.

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

Eligibility
• iNPCs are also eligible to participate.
• If you have more than one character, such as a graduated adult, an iNPC, former staff adult, and/or player character, you can participate on each account.
• The word count is bound to the account posted on. So if you posted 20,000 words on your main account and 9,000 words on your iNPC, that does not mean you are eligible for the Heroic Hippogriff rewards. Rather your main account is eligible for Committed Cauldron rewards and your iNPC is eligible for Casual Quill rewards.

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

Validation & Tracking

Players are asked to post updates every week (Nov 7, 14, 21, 30) in their application post with:
• A brief summary of progress in the form of thread links
• A word count total
• Regardless, the final numbers will be taken on December 1, so please edit any updates by November 30!

* Verification will be handled by staff at the end of the month.

Optional Tracking Tools:
WordCounter.net
Google Docs (word count stats)

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

Perks & Extras
• Top word count contributors will be mentioned in the December splash page
• Weekly writing prompts posted every Sunday! (Nov 7, Nov 8, Nov 15, Nov 22, Nov 29)

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

Final Words

This isn't a competition, it's a celebration of storytelling. Whether you write 500 words or 50,000, you're building worlds, deepening characters, and contributing to the collective magic that makes Hogwarts.io special.

Write bravely. Write passionately. Write like a lion, badger, raven, or serpent with something to prove.

Register now and make November magical!

There is something about ambition, how it not only propels you but also defines you.

House-Themed HogNaNo Prompts

Optional House Challenges for Hogwarts.io Writing Month

These challenges give writing prompts to users that do not know what to write about. They can write solos, ask other members for permission to mention their character in these solos or have a thread that makes use of these prompts.

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

❤️ GRYFFINDOR: Courage & Conviction
“Courage isn’t the absence of fear, it’s what you do despite it.”
  1. Nov 1: Your character does the right thing even when no one is watching.
Consider a moral quandary, such as your friend asking you to keep a dangerous secret. Consider what you do.
  2. Nov 8: Write a moment where your character feels fear, but acts anyway.
Bravery is not the absence of fear, it is overcoming it.
  3. Nov 15: A friend asks for your help in something dangerous. Do you say yes?
What did they ask you to do? How did you prepare or was there no preparation? What happened? Were there any consequences?
  4. Nov 22: Write a duel, argument, or confrontation and the cost of speaking up.
What started the fight or disagreement? Was the battle verbal, physical or magical? Did you get into any trouble, lose a friend, find yourself in detention?
  5. Nov 29: "Not all heroes wear capes. Some just refuse to give up."
Sometimes you are up against overwhelming odds, it is not about overpowering opposition but wearing them down or maybe getting lucky...

Theme: bravery, leadership, loyalty under pressure

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

💛 HUFFLEPUFF: Belonging & Compassion
"The greatest magic lies in kindness."
  1. Nov 1: Your character finds someone left out and chooses to include them.
Describe the character being left out. Was there a reason why? How do you notice? What to you do to include them?
  2. Nov 8: Write a story about forgiveness, even when it's undeserved.
Describe someone wronging you. Describe how it effected you. Describe how they seek forgiveness. Describe how you came to the conclusion of forgiving them (it does not need to be easy!).
  3. Nov 15:"Home is not a place, but the people who stay."
Describe finding home and hearth with a chosen family rather than the one you are given. This could be making friends with other houses, this could be finding a home among non-biological family.
  4. Nov 22: Kindness is compassion.
You do something nice for someone. Tell us about the person you do something nice for. What do you do? How do they react?
  5. Nov 29: "Even badgers bite when pushed too far."
While Hufflepuffs are not known for fighting, badgers are more than capable. What pushes you too far and makes you uncharacteristically push back? what do you do? How do they react? What is the outcome?

Theme: empathy, patience, quiet strength

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

💙 RAVENCLAW: Discovery & Imagination
“The mind is a labyrinth — but curiosity lights the way.”
  1. Nov 1: Your character solves (or tries to solve) a riddle or puzzle that no one else could answer.
What is the riddle or puzzle? Where did you find this riddle or puzzle? What steps did you take to learn the answer? What is the answer? Need help? Here is a riddle: I write myself as I am read. Each word I speak erases the last. Tell me, reader: what have you learned, when the page forgets you too?
  2. Nov 8: Write a moment of inspiration: the birth of an idea or spell.
What inspired you. What is your dream? What steps are you going to take to make this idea or spell a reality?
  3. Nov 15:"Knowledge is dangerous, but ignorance is fatal."
A cautionary tale about how knowing too much can cause things to go wrong. Give an example. Now, what happens when you lack a vital piece of information, how much worse can it be?
  4. Nov 22: A forbidden book calls your name from the Restricted Section.
You know you can't go to the restricted section, it is locked away for a reason. Is this call a literal voice in your head or more an urge to learn something forbidden or a certain subject. Tell us about it. Do you try to find the book? What happens?
  5. Nov 29: A dream leaves behind a riddle: what does it mean?
Think of a creative riddle. If you can't here is an example: I am the pupil that never blinks, the witness to every sin. You cover me, but I am still there. You curse me, but I never leave. What am I? How do you try to solve it? What conclusion do you have?

Theme: knowledge, creativity, truth-seeking

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

💚 SLYTHERIN: Ambition & Power
“Greatness is not given. It is taken — with care, cunning, and control.”
  1. Nov 1: Your character wants something badly. What do they risk to get it?
This can be a lot of things. A certain friend, an actual physical item, to be perceived a certain way by others, etc. Something that might be a taboo even. What do you want? Why do you want it? How do you try to get it? What are the consequences of this?
  2. Nov 8: Write a scene where manipulation and charm achieve more than brute force.
One of them muscle-headed Gryffindors or more physically imposing characters is trying to push you around. Well, thankfully you are more than capable of dealing with their kind. What happens? How do you outwit or charm them? How does it all end?
  3. Nov 15: "Power reveals... it doesn’t corrupt."
The Slytherin mantra. How did power, access, position grant you truth.
  4. Nov 22: A rival underestimates you. Show them their mistake.
Describe your rival. Why are you at odds? How do they underestimate you? How did you use this mistake against them? What was the outcome?
  5. Nov 29: Write a story about legacy. What your character wants to be remembered for.
Legacy, the ultimate ambition: what's yours?

Theme: resourcefulness, pride, legacy

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

Bonus Prompts (Any House)
  1. Nov 1: A spell misfires, changing something in an unexpected way.
This could be you trying to learn a new spell, failing at something you are an expert at, or you witnessing someone else cast a spell that goes very very wrong. Explain what happened.
  2. Nov 8: "If I could change one thing…"
Everyone has something they do not like, be it about themselves, their friends, their environment, even some of their favorite things. What would your one thing be? Why? What would you like it to change to? How is this better?
  3. Nov 15: Write about a festival or feast through your character's eyes.
There are plenty of feasts throughout the year such as the end of term feast, the Hallowe'en feast, the welcome feast at the start of the year, the welcome feast for when the other schools come to visit, Christmas feast, etc.
  4. Nov 22: Write a diary entry.
This can be multiple entries. What do you write in your dairy? Consider secrets, your present relationships, hopes and aspirations. Do you have any drama? Crushes? Spill!
  5. Nov 29:Write a letter.
Who do you write to? What do you have to say to them?
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

These can be done in many cases as solos, but they can also work well in a group setting. Make sure if you are mentioning other community members (such as other players or staff) that you get their permission.

WHAT IF I DON'T LIKE MY HOUSE PROMPTS?

You do not have to do them. You can come up without your own prompts. You can also do some of the other house prompts.

Mini Challenge: Prove that sorting hat wrong and do the prompts for some other house!

WHAT IF I DON'T WANT TO USE PROMPTS AT ALL?

Then don't. It is totally optional.

Here are a list of on-word warm-ups that can also be of help.

Whisper – Ink – Thorn – Lantern – Reflection – Memory – Echo – Clockwork – Blood – Feather – Song – Mirror – Dust – Silence – Moonlight – Thread – Key – Ash – Promise – Mask

DO YOU HAVE ANY IDEAS FOR A LARGER PIECE OF WRITING OR A BOOK FOR SHLEVES OR THE GALLERY?

Yes, of course. Here are a few ideas:
  1. The world ends quietly: no explosions, no war. Just silence. Describe what happens next.
  2. You wake up one morning to find your name missing from every record, ID, and memory.
  3. Someone sends you a letter every year on your birthday and they know a lot about you, but you know nothing about them. What do they want?
  4. The moon disappears from the sky overnight, and no one but you remembers it was ever there.
  5. Your shadow starts acting like it has its own personality, and it's not a kind one.
  6. You inherit a locked box from a stranger who claims to be your child.
  7. Every lie you tell becomes true, until you lie about something you can't live with.
  8. The Internet goes down worldwide, permanently. The world must learn to exist without it.
  9. A museum curator notices that the portraits have started aging backwards.
  10. You fall in love with a voice you hear through a number dialed by mistake.

Write bravely. Write kindly. Write cleverly. Write with purpose.

Happy HogNaNo, witches and wizards!

There is something about ambition, how it not only propels you but also defines you.

HogNaNo Rules & Guidelines

"Magic begins with words: make sure they’re yours."

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

Core Rules
  1. No plagiarism.
All submissions must be your own original writing. Do not copy or closely paraphrase text from other works, websites, or roleplays.
  2. No AI-generated content.
Posts must be written entirely by you: not by ChatGPT, GrammarlyGO, Sudowrite, Jasper, or other generative tools. We may run random AI checks. You will be disqualified if we catch you using AI.
  3. No cheating.
This includes inflating word counts, spamming to trick word counters, reusing old posts as new submissions, or bulk-copying previously written content.
  4. No godmodding.
Do not control other characters, their dialogue, or their outcomes without permission.
  5. Stay in-character (if roleplaying).
  6. Writing must fit within the Hogwarts.io universe. Avoid lore-breaking events, powers, or tech inconsistent with canon.
  7. Meet the site's minimum word count.
Each roleplay post must be at least 200 words of original content, excluding quotes or formatting.
  8. Follow site and forum rules.
All Hogwarts.io community guidelines apply: including respect, inclusivity, and the Site Rules.

Tips: Avoiding AI Detection Issues

AI detectors (like Copyleaks or GPTZero) can occasionally flag real writing as "AI-like." Here's how to keep your work safe and clear:
  1. Don't overuse grammar-correcting tools.
Tools like Grammarly, Quillbot, or DeepL Rewrite may rewrite your text enough to trigger AI detection. Use them lightly.
  2. Keep a rough draft or notes.
If you ever need to prove authorship, having an early version (even messy) helps demonstrate genuine work.
  3. Translators are okay if used transparently.
If English is not your first language and you use a translator, please note this at the bottom of your post or in a spoiler tag (so staff don't misread it as AI).
  4. A great technique if you rely heavily on translators or grammar tools is to spoiler the rough draft. This will not contribute towards your word count, but it will protect you against false accusations.

Other Recommendations
  • Credit collaborators if writing in pairs or groups.
  • Keep backups of your writing for word count tracking.
  • Mark sensitive topics with a [Trigger Warning] to respect readers but remember our site rating.
  • Have fun! This event celebrates creativity, not perfection.
  • This can be done for any account you have individually. This means: you can separately complete this errand on more than one account. The word count is bound to your individual account.
