| ── | Dear Lucille, We arrived yesterday, and everything is quite different here, though that is to be expected. We will be here for about two weeks, a little more depending on how you count it, but I suppose it will give me enough time to scope out the herbology classroom if I am so permitted. Mayah would not come, but I knew that even before I asked her if she would be attending. It is rather hard for me to see my best friend and sister not understand why the world intrigues me so, but to each their own. Sorry, that was rather unnecessary, but if I cannot tell you, then who? On a more focused note, that seems like quite the outfit and I'm sure you will be quite easy to spot amidst the chaos that I am sure will ensue (with Hogwarts's reputation and all). I have no knowledge of clothes whatsoever, so you never know. And even if you do manage to blend in (though I doubt you could) watching and listening long enough I would be bound to hear your name from someone talking to you eventually. Then again, if I did I would be loathe to interrupt. Now, if I happen to go blind at sometime before the ball or during, and perhaps go deaf as well, the thing you could recognize me by would most likely be my glasses. Sebastian, my brother, would say that makes me sound like a dork, nerd, or some other completely misleading stereotype he learned from Ilvermorny students the one time he left for an international event. But alas, Seb is not reading my correspondence, so I need not worry unless you are secretly a hater of those who do not have completely perfect eyesight. It seems you have at least a bit of experience with the more formal aspect of things, whereas I think I might just have an absolute crash out it there was more than one fork (I have heard far too many stories for my own good). Enchanting is definitely the main descriptor, but if there were a second one, I believe it would fall along the lines of dangerous or extravagant/over the top, if there is a word that promises them both, that would be it. And it was only in jest I wrote the saltwater/freshwater comment, as I would hope you know the difference between the two, for if you did not, you would have to wonder if common sense is something you possessed. But on a less 'possibly perceived as rude / joking' tone, please use the utmost caution, drowning would be one of the least preferable ways to go, and so very unfortunate. I find that cliche is such an odd word. One that conveys a lot of truth about human beings as a whole, and usually it is rather derogatory. Cliches are rarely so bad though, and honestly I think it is good to find at least something good about every situation. Light is there, if we choose to find it, and some people, such as yourself (I am assuming) have a knack for finding it. If it is not already obvious, I find that one who spends their days scorning those different than them are rather wasting time. What good does it do to think vile thoughts about one you do not know other than in status? If none of that made a lick of sense, please do ignore my ramblings and hardly thought out philosophical questionings. Hardly am I to deserve your praise for understanding others' anger or discontentment. Empathy is merely understanding what someone is going through, or understanding that they are going through something regardless of if you know what it is. Though, it does not excuse them from being brash, rude, or bitter, the knowledge of it makes it a little harder to be angry, something a lot of people could use. I do not mind your generalization or vagueness in the slightest, nuance has its time and place, which would be here as of now. A metaphorical space I suppose, between parchment, quill, and thoughts. (Or just on a bit of parchment, but life gets so dull when you refuse to have a little bit of wonder in it. I have been learning that lately.) Nuance, I feel, should also be heavily applied when taking into account how to love others. When it all boils down, though, all left is the fact that you care about them, and would I be correct in assuming we agree on that? It has truly been helpful, conversing on this as you have given me new viewpoints to consider, which might seem shallow or insincere, but I really just long to see how other people view the world, and then formulate my own opinions afterwards. My mother gets along well with just about everyone, so I have no doubt the two of you would get along swimmingly. I do agree with your 'best day of my life' statement, and the adventurer in me would be vehemently nodding if it were corporeal. Alas, it is not, but I think no truer words have been written than a longing for all the little things instead of a big gesture. (Of course, I am joking as that is more of an opinion or preference, and I write it to show my sincerity.) Hm, a baking booth sounds quite nice, in the sense that it would be warm and peaceful. In my mind the world of adventure lies outside of bread and pastries, but who said you cannot have both? And with your aversion to baking and being potentially burned, I would dare to think you don't much care for potions? Rarely are observations professional or unprofessional, simply observed by eyes with different mindsets. (If you only change how you view it, you stop yourself from the use of demeaning words.) Now that you say you have experience with normal horses, I hardly think unicorns would be a problem. Now much different, I would assume, other than that one has a horn and would require more careful attention. There is always more time to plan, of course, and you (hopefully) still have a lot more years to live and acquire your unicorns. Posters seem hardly necessary, and it might be quite hard to do so considering you do not even know what I look like? I digress, you would probably find a way, if it came to it. Your friend, | x | ![]() |

Dear Jarden,
It is lovely to hear that you have arrived safely! I shall make note of the description you have provided of yourself, and I sincerely hope we can meet at the ball. Worry not, though, as I have devised a new plan of coming across each other. If I do not see you at the ball, I shall send you a letter and follow the owl on a broom, and it shall eventually lead to you. This plan is indeed foolproof, don't you think?
As for what you say of Mayah, I suppose we can not always expect people to understand us, no matter who they may be to us. I, personally, find that it is those who love us and have their own established opinions of us who find it most difficult to change those opinions. For me, it manifests in the way my family constantly treats me as if I am 5 years old. I can not blame them, for I know I will always be the baby of the family, but it does make me wonder if they will ever be able to let go of the image of a toddler when they look at me? I suppose time will tell; perhaps eventually I shall enjoy their view of me rather than greet it with mild annoyance. It does have its perks, and rarely do I have to do something tedious without them jumping in to help.
Is it strange that the notion of meeting you for the first time sounds more exciting than it normally would? The ball is beginning to sound like a treasure hunt for you, which I suppose fits with the pirate theme they have going on. Apparently, there shall be an event called "The Drowned Palace," but I shall keep your warning in mind and try my best not to actually drown! The idea of drowning is by far the most uncomfortable thought I have had in my short life, and it further makes me think that whatever belongs in the sea should stay there, and we should not disturb it. If the very water is telling us to keep out, who are we to explore further? But, that is simply my thoughts tinged with a bit of unease, so I am certainly biased against it.
It is funny that you bring up finding light; not because that is something I am unable to do, but because that is exactly what my name means. It can be 'light' or 'light in the grove,' depending on how fancy you'd want it to be. It is my personal goal to live up to my name, so I am glad that you are getting that impression of me. I agree that mindless hate is simply wasting time. I find hate requires so much energy that would be quite productive elsewhere. And, if you truly dislike someone, why give them the power to affect you so?
I find most people get stuck in the trap of only having sympathy for themselves and no one else. Understandable in a way, I suppose, as you will never know another person's feelings as well as your own, but with a bit of conscious effort, I believe we could all get past that. One must come to the realization that everyone else's lives are as rich and full as their own is, and they are not simply background characters or passing moments. They are lives and souls. I am beginning to feel like I am not making much sense, so I shall move on, but if you understand even a fraction of what I am trying to say, I will be happy at my communicating skills.
You are correct in saying that our basic definition of love is the same: to simply care about someone. I, too, am enjoying our conversations, and have not had such thought-provoking letters before. Depending on how you see yourself, that could either be a compliment for you or a judgment upon me, although it is intended to be the former. I think one must always listen to different perspectives, as those are, in the end, what form your opinion. If your opinion is based solely on one perspective, can you really claim it to be a thought out, unbiased view? I do not think so.
Big gestures do, of course, have their time and place, but I could live my entire life without a big gesture, but I could not live without little things. That is, of course, an exaggeration, as I think I would quickly have a heart attack if my friends and family forgot my birthday, for example, but I think one or two big gestures per year shall suffice, while little things need to be more consistent. At least for me.
Your assumption about Potions is spot on! I find the precision required is a bit too difficult for me to attain, but I am quite good at the theoretical portion. The professor must hate me for all the mistakes I do, but I do tend to get it right in the end. I am nothing if not dedicated. As for adventure, I do not think I went to Summer Camp specifically looking for adventure. The entire journey to Hogwarts felt so adventurous, that even something as mundane as baking felt exciting and magical.
As always, these are the first draft of my observations. I have changed the phrasing like you advised, and I do find this gives off an intriguing impression, like a manuscript. And perhaps that is quite fitting for our odd friendship.
Eagerly awaiting our meeting,
Your friend,

| ── | Dear Lucille, Your ideas of finding me besides the ball seem to be getting increasingly more hilarious. First the posters, now owl following... what is next? Animal communication? If so, some tree skinks might be best, as they often know my whereabouts. Alas, there are none here, so it would hardly work at all! And even if it was foolproof, you are hardly a fool, so it is bound to produce some sort of result. Though maybe not the intended one, I suppose. Unfortunately enough, I was not expecting Mayah to share my thoughts regardless of however I tried to explain it to her. And yes! Perception is quite the odd, though intriguing, thing. It must be hard, to be treated as though you are less mature than you really are. The constant struggle of maturity being expected and being thought of as adolescent all the while. I am also the youngest, but the gaps of age between me and my siblings is not near so evident in our mindsets yet. It also helps, I suppose, that Mayah has enough assertiveness for the both of us to be seen as the same age as any of them, though perhaps not Tallinn. On a more contemplative note, I wonder at what point overbearance can become a hinderance to growth. But anyways, I sincerely hope time will tell the answer you most want in regards towards your siblings' view of you. I do not think it is necessarily strange, though I may be biased, for I feel much the same amount of excitement. (I think, at least. Emotion is quite difficult to gauge over parchment.) Making it sound akin to a treasure hunt certainly makes it sound more whimsical, and, yes, fitting indeed. The Drowned Palace... I wonder what a palace might do in order to be drowned. All hypothetical, of course, as these things are usually just metaphor to intrigue. As for things in the sea staying there, I agree wholeheartedly. While most small critters are fascinating, ocean ones cause me to be more... wary. My father used to caution that 'just because you can get in there does not mean you should', which I feel is much the same for the ocean on the whole. Humans certainly have a habit of going places not meant for us, and your unease is certainly warranted. It never occurred to me that Lucille meant light (or 'light in the grove', either), but then again, etymology has never been of particular interest to me as it is more something my brother Sebastian would be well versed in. As for hate, it is truly is so puzzling, and quite interesting pondering the effect others' hate has on our lives. A quote somewhere said that our lives are ten percent what happens to us, and nintey percent how we react to it. The math might be a little off, but it is pretty on point as far as I can tell. Though, it is at times like these I start wondering how other peoples' brains work, or how they process what they see and hear. Perhaps, most are more impulsive than myself and rarely stop to think before spitting out vile words, but is there not a point at which they do stop to consider how they have impacted themselves? Then again, I have said my fair share of vile words, so it is not my place to cast shame upon others. And (again) I agree with your thoughts on the self-sympathy aspect of it. Some would call it narcissism, but there has to be a point when it is as you say, only seeing your own side of the story and not knowing what others feel. In my own life, at least, there are certainly moments when I feel like the main character, in a sense, then I remember my family and few friends. Assuredly they know good and hard just as much as I do, if not more. More than a fraction of what you say makes sense, and if anyone's, it is my communication skills who put thoughts to shame. So be joyful, for your words are not so nonsensical as you would believe them to be. I probably would never tell you if they were dreadful, but I promise this is truthful. Far be it from me to agree with your demeaning talk, as neither have I came across such in depth letters of my own. Arguably, though, it is your letters that provoke thought, I simply reply. Then again, you had not intended it to be rude to yourself, so I hardly know why I remarked upon it. And I suppose I ought to thank you for the compliment, so; thank you. So rarely can you find a completely thought out view, and unbiased ones are virtually nonexistant... at the very least I have been unable to find one. Yet another reason why connection is important and being a hermit would get me nowhere; I could not form unbiased opinions. While Hermitry does sound rather pleasing, I would hardly have need of the opinions I seem to like talking about so much. Potions is hardly for everyone, some wondering of the ethics behind some of the ingredients, heedless of being burned or messing up catastrophically. And I like it because of the precision, something that makes it a bit more interesting. Then again, that is just me trying to figure out just how potions work just so to get a specific result. I can scarecely imagine a professor hating a student just because they mess up... that is why you are there, after all. Dedication also usually helps for some grace to be given in the hating department, as it is a rather admirable trait. Well, I had not expected anyone else to arrive at summer camp seeking adventure but myself, as I go nearly everywhere seeking to find something new and exciting. Everything can feel magical if you think about it in a different lense, baking especially, like you said. Even writing till it feels like your hand will fall off can be fun when it will help you communicate with someone across the globe. I hope to meet you in person very near in the future and that posters nor owl following broomriders will be necessary. If we somehow do manage to just so miss each other, I am quite sure there will be other opportunities in the following year. Maybe, if we are lucky, Tenusa might even be hosting an event. Your friend, | x | ![]() |
