Avery hadn’t played her saxophone in a long time. If anything she had missed it. Playing her saxophone always gave her a sense of freedom. That she could be free without worrying about judgement. Though she was still nervous to play around others. Something about playing around others made her feel that she wasn’t good enough for their attention.

She walked into the rehearsal room. The case of her alto saxophone bumping her leg gently. The room was empty for now. Good. She hoped it would stay that way. At least while she warmed up. She knew she would be rusty after not playing for the past few months, so she felt sympathy for whoever listened nearby.

Avery chose an empty seat near the piano and sat down. Taking special care to set her saxophone down slowly so as to not make too much noise.

Then she was finally ready to unpack her saxophone and play. She had managed to grab some old music of hers before she’d left the common room, but nothing too special. A good start after not playing for awhile.

She opened the case of the instrument. The light making the brass finish gleam. She smiled. Glad to see the beautiful instrument again.

Avery put it together. First placing the neck strap around her neck and clipping it to the body of her saxophone. Then she began sucking on the reed. Wincing at the taste of the new reed. The taste of sour milk was never pleasant.

As she sucked on the reed, Avery then connected the gooseneck to the body of her saxophone. Making sure that the octave key was lined up correctly. Then she placed the reed on the mouthpiece before connecting it to the saxophone. Then everything was ready to play.

She started out simple with a few scales. Just as a warmup and test to see how far she could push herself.

As she was playing, she saw something out of the corner of her eye. Someone was in the room with her. “Hello?” Avery asked.
