| ── | Broom Racing was a thing Graci had put a lot of thought into, but much less practice. So, naturally, when she actually decides to just go over there and scope it out, of course it starts raining. Not that she particularly minded the rain in and of itself, just the sheer bad timing of said natural phenomena. "Seriously? By the sake of all things good... ugh, Pluvia Velo." In most cases, Graci would just rush back into the castle, but this was one of the rare moments in which she remembered she was a witch. She clearly hadn't remembered early when she used her wand like a pencil to hold her hair up. Now, her fringe was somewhat plastered to her face from the little time it took to utter the incantation. Wonderful. She pivoted on her left foot, turning to go right back to the castle as if nothing had happened. The rain was really sudden, and would probably be over relatively quick, but all the productivity seemed to leech from her bones on the spot. Is someone... sitting out there? It seemed as though someone was sitting out there in the rain. And either they didn't know the umbrella charm, or didn't have their wand on them. Eesh, how horrible. Seems cold. "Hey, uh, are you purposely sitting out here, or did you get stranded in the rain?" A genuine question, as she occasionally found herself sitting in the rain. It was comforting, if slightly saddening with the lack of sun. Rain feels cleansing, too, and it didn't judge your tears, it was doing the same thing. | xxx | ![]() |

In Between the Raindrops

Percival had come out to the courtyard for some fresh air after a long study session in the common room. The dungeon always felt a little too still after a while, and even if the sky looked a little heavy with clouds, it didn’t seem like the rain would come down just yet. So, he’d taken his Defense Against the Dark Arts book with him and sat down, legs folded, eyes scanning over the same paragraph he must have read four times already.
With the goal to become an auror like his Dad one day, he'd have to know this stuff really well. However, luck was not on his side today.
“Awe... come on,” he muttered as he looked up at the dark sky when a light drizzle turned into a sudden downpour. He scrambled to close his book and tucked it under his robes, trying to shield it with his arms. It didn’t help much because the rain came down too fast, and within seconds, his hair clung to his forehead and his robes grew heavy against his skin.
Percival sighed, “Great,” he grumbled to himself. “Perfect timing.”
He thought about making a run for the castle, but at this point, he was already soaked, so there didn’t seem much point in hurrying just to drip all over the floors. Instead, he just did his best to protect his book as best as he could. That's when he heard a voice nearby.
He blinked and turned his head to the girl with her wand drawn. She looked dry, which made him instantly wish he could use that spell as well. The corners of his mouth then pulled into an awkward smile as he held up the book still tucked under his robe. “Uh, yeah, I was caught by the sudden rain."
His cheeks were a little pink, though whether from the cold or this girl approaching him, it was hard to tell. “You’re, uh, better prepared than I am,” he added after a moment, “That charm looks handy.”

| ── | Graci shivered slightly, now that the air was slowly starting to get colder, rain no longer just meant soaked, but cold and soaked. She tilted her wand a little so that the magic umbrella would keep them both dry. Now that she was sure he wasn't being purposely miserable it was easier to sympathize, though she had occasionally found herself being dramatic out in the rain, too. "Yeah, it is pretty handy," Graci laughed. "I'm pretty sure it was taught in Charms, first year. I'm Graci, by the way." She had assumed that now that she was more familiar with the school, that would automatically transfer over to the people, but alas, the introductions seemed they would continue for all the years to come. Ugh, maybe I should start counting. How many times I say 'I'm Graci' in this next year. Graci dragged her toe against the ground, not particularly caring that she was getting even more of her shoe wet, and pulling a stray strand of hair back behind her ear. She couldn't gauge if the boy next to her was her age, or a first year. It made it a little harder realizing that she hardly knew anyone. And everyone seemed so very sophisticated and mature here that some first years behaved as if they were in fourth year and vice versa. As her eyes went to the sky once more Graci reminded herself that she had only written to her parents that morning and Kou-Kou would not be back with their reply any time soon. Her father would have chuckled at her impatience and her mum would have just squeezed her shoulders, assuring her they missed her just as much. With her gaze back on the scene before her, she realized just how beautiful the imposing castle could be in the darkness of the clouds. Her thumb traced over the slight patterns on the hilt of her wand as she stood there, still in the wind, with her hair still deciding it wanted to be free. The price of long hair, I suppose. Mutiny. | xxx | ![]() |

Percival blinked when she shifted her wand so that the charm covered them both. The sudden stop of raindrops against his head made him sigh in relief. He then brushed some wet hair from his forehead and smiled at her. “Thanks. I really should have learned that spell by now.” He rubbed the back of his neck and laughed a bit awkwardly, “Hopefully we’ll get to it soon in class.”
When she introduced herself, he nodded. “I’m Percival,” he said, still smiling. “Nice to meet you, Graci.” He shifted the book under his arm to keep it from slipping and glanced up toward the gray sky. The rain hadn’t slowed down one bit. Sheets of water rolled down from the stone ledges of the courtyard and splashed into small puddles that were spreading across the cobblestones. “You know,” he added, “I thought the rain might stop if I just waited it out. Turns out I’m not that lucky.”
He laughed again and glanced over at her. She looked comfortable enough under the charm, though her long hair still caught bits of the wind that slipped through. He tilted his head a little, watching a few strands sway past her face before he spoke again. “I think your hair’s still getting wet,” he pointed out with a chuckle.
After a moment, he adjusted his stance a little to keep the water from dripping onto his shoes and looked back toward her. “You’ve got good wandwork,” He smiled again, and this time the nerves in his voice had started to fade. Being under the charm beside her, shielded from the storm, didn’t feel nearly as awkward as it had a few moments ago. “So,” he asked, looking toward the castle doors, “Were you heading back inside before I interrupted you? Or were you planning to stay out here a bit?”

| ── | Graci simply shrugged at his thanks, who was she to leave someone out in the rain. Well, that, and the fact she still didn't know how to accept gratitude. It could make her sound rude or arrogant most of the time, or they would simply never give it a second thought and she was just overthinking. Anxiously, she looked towards the ever darkening sky. "Hopefully," she said noncommittally, repeating what he said in agreement, though her mind was up in the clouds, falling like the rain back into the present with a slight shake of her head. Hm, Percival. Sounds very... midevial. I'll have to remember that. Graci had never been too good with names. Faces, she could remember like the letters of the alphabet, with ease and no problem at all, which was virtually useless without their name. When she had first met Makayli and Lindin back in London, she'd had to ask Makayli 'what's your name again' for the first seven days. Not her best moment, but at least now she would never be able to forget it, even if she tried to. Names were much like the rain gathering in puddles at their feet, for Graci, moving out of her mind of their own accord, going who knows where. "It's nice to meet you, too, Percival," Graci said, as most people did. Custom, she supposed, though a boring one. "Rain has a mind of it's own, and really it's too spontaneous for luck to catch onto and turn it's favour one way or another." Graci didn't believe in luck, but she understood the sentiment, everyone needed something to blame or thank when things went a different way than expected. A drop of water plopped against the ground near her foot, trailing a path over the slightly uneven ground, disappearing somewhere behind her. Graci batted her hair with her free hand at his mention, the soaked ends clinging together like the water was glue, or something of the sort. "It has a bad habit of that, I suppose. Always getting in my face and going every which way. Rather annoying, if you ask me." Her face flushed slightly, but she blamed it on the cold, taking an elastic from her wrist and putting it in a loose ponytail so it could no longer stage a rebellion. Well, that solves the problem I guess. She smiled at his compliment of her wandwork, "Thank you! Charms is my favourite class, so I usually practice my charms the most. Which is prooooobably why I'm slowly dragging my Transfiguration grades down the gutter." Her seeming adeptness at Charms was a point of pride for the young Gryffindor girl, who really craved academic validation of any sort, as most considered her the least intelligent of all her family. "Yeah, I was going in too, not much use checking out the broom racing tracks in a downpour. And, technically, I was the one doing the interrupting," Graci pointed out with another glance towards the sky, watching the rain come off of the castle's roof in rivulets of quicksilver. | xxx | ![]() |
