xxxGod, this was a stupid idea. Perhaps the worst idea she'd ever had. Not only did Lucille post a flyer for help with astronomy, she'd made it anonymous, too. With her luck, everyone had thought it was some sort of prank and ignored it. Part of her hoped that was true. At least then she could tell herself that she had tried asking for help, but no one had wanted to.
Lucille sat right in the center of the room on the floor, surrounded by her notes spread out all around her, and feeling incredibly tiny in this large tower, where every rustle of parchment seemed to echo. She picked up the notes from her most recent class, but they referenced something she'd studied earlier, and she didn't quite understand what that was either.
With a sigh, she dropped the parchment in her hand, collapsing onto the floor and staring up at the ceiling. She wondered if it would help to go up the tower and stare at the stars, but it seemed like too much effort for something that might work.
She didn't know why this was so difficult. Astronomy itself was fine; it didn't seem too difficult. It was just that the classes took place at night, when Lucille desperately wanted to go back to her dorm, change into her pajamas, and rest. And so, in every Astronomy class, while the professor talked of planets and stars and the moon, Lucille would fight to prevent her eyes from drifting shut. Her notes didn't miss a thing, but it seemed she wrote with her mind switched off. Lucille's notes were a bit messy, but they undoubtedly contained all she needed to know. The desire for academic excellence meant her hand worked of its own accord, writing things down while her brain struggled to grasp it.
She turned her head to face the door, eyes beginning to close, even though it wasn't even that late yet. She didn't know if she believed someone would come to her aid, but it had always been a habit for her to watch the doors wherever she was. She had always been an excitable, sociable child, and her family said that Lucille would always stare at the entrances, not wanting to miss someone entering or exiting. Now, although she didn't do it for the same purpose, muscle memory would often kick in and find the nearest entrance.
Her eyes were slowly beginning to drift shut, and she wondered if a little nap on the floor might help her tackle this annoying subject. Right as she began to fall asleep, having completely given up on her dreaded astronomy, she heard the door open, and with it, her eyes opened, too.

xxxThe door opened, and Lucille scrambled to sit upright. She didn't want the newcomer to see her like this, in what she could only describe as the depths of despair. Lucille's hair had been tied up in a high ponytail before, but from the time spent on the floor, countless strands had come loose, giving her a frazzled look, rather than framing her face.
She looked away from the girl who entered, her embarrassment growing at her current state. Her hands immediately went to the hair tie that had come loose in her hair, and she attempted to redo it, frantic, but her hair refused to be tamed currently. With a defeated look, Lucille left the hair tie on her wrist, and smoothed down her hair a little, trying to look just a little bit more presentable and organized in front of the girl.
Speaking of which, the girl seemed kind, both from the expression on her face and the comforting tone in her voice. When she had entered, her pale blonde hair had seemed to glow, illuminated by moonlight. Lucille knew it was silly, but it seemed the night sky was a better friend of this girl than hers.
A fight with the moon and stars. What an odd thing to say, Lucille thought to herself, finally meeting the girl's eyes once more. "I suppose you could call it that," Lucille said with a hesitant laugh, looking at all her notes now. "Although it seems the stars call me to sleep, when I should be studying."
Lucille brought her knees up to her chest, wrapping her arms around them, and then resting her head, sideways so she could still look at the girl. Her eyes dropped to the flyer the girl was handing to her, but she didn't take it. She didn't want to see that thing in her life again, and certainly didn't want to hold it. "And there lies the proof of our quarrel."
She wanted to acknowledge the kind girl who was here helping her, but Lucille couldn't bring herself to be as bright and cheerful as she always was. Not when she was letting down her siblings' expectations of her in the first month of school, and certainly not when she'd had to turn to a stranger for help. And with that thought, guilt began to rise up in her. Guilt at being cold to someone offering her kindness. She wasn't rude, by any means, but in Lucille's warped vision of the world, the hesitance she felt, coupled with the failure to ask the new girl any questions about herself felt like a grievance, a method to shun someone. Ordinarily, Lucille would stop looking at her at such an interaction, her eyes travelling every which way, finding the walls more interesting than her companion. But, right now, she felt she owed the girl this much, at least, so there was a pleading, hopeless look in her eyes as she looked up.

The girl seemed to be greatly affected by Lucille's despair. She was empathetic, compassionate, and Lucille wondered if she might have faced something similar. Her words were encouraging, but simultaneously made Lucille feel inadequate for ignoring the most basic needs one has. She talked of sleep, but how could Lucille admit to her that she simply could not go to bed with unfinished work? And if she tried, her hands would itch as if calling her to pick up some parchment, work until her fingers were stiff, and only then would her mind allow her to succumb to rest.
Lucille began to speak, to tell her that whether she could meet those expectations or not, they were set. She did not want to be a disappointment, her ache for her family's approval far outweighing any concerns for her health, until the girl talked of how she had ended up in the hospital. Lucille silenced herself, realizing that may very well be a possibility in her future. She had been skipping meals already, rushing in the opposite direction when students headed to the Great Hall, taking every moment she could to revise or work on her assignments. Already she had managed to crash into someone in the hallways in her haste, a reminder to slow down a little. But Lucille had never given the idea a second thought. Now, she certainly couldn't protest, after what the girl told her. It would seem too much like minimizing her own experience with this problem.
As the girl spoke, she began to rub circles in Lucille's back. For a second, Lucille tensed, shoulders tightening, uncertain about the gesture from a stranger. But, slowly, she relaxed, deciding to accept the comfort. It felt like home, as if someone was finally looking out for her after so long on her own. School had only been in session for a month, but Lucille had been away from her family for what felt like an eternity already. Summer camp, although a wonderful experience, had only served to prevent her from seeing her family. Sometimes, she would sit and think of how, if only she had missed it, perhaps she wouldn't be feeling so lost right now. But, then again, this was bound to happen at any rate.
The girl introduced herself as Elena, and asked for her name. Lucille was quiet for a second, as if reorienting herself. It looked as if her thoughts were stitching themselves back together after the intense spiral she had just navigated. "Lucille," she said finally. Her voice came out a little hoarse, as if she'd been quiet for a long time, although it had only been a minute. She cleared her throat, before beginning to speak. "Asking for help takes no courage. It's just a little embarrassing sometimes," she said with a slight wince. The idea irked her even now. "The expectations are there for a reason. Only because I can meet them. I have to. I just need a bit more time, and it'll all be fine. Everything will be fine." Her words quickened as she spoke, as if she was speaking more to herself than to Elena. Lucille straightened, with a little bit of feigned bravery, and surveyed the scattered parchment. "It's not a lot, really. It's manageable." Again, she was trying to comfort herself, her voice cracking a little as the pages seemed to blur together before doubling, then tripling in quantity.
"Just some more time," she repeated, her voice a whisper now, closing her eyes and taking a deep breath. She was trying to prepare herself, but was hesitant to begin. Opening her eyes felt like an enormous task, for she would have to face her 'neglected' work when she did. So Lucille kept her eyes closed, trying to will herself to open them, to begin reading, to ask Elena to teach her, to do anything, but it just seemed so much easier to sit here and avoid it all.

oh no! feel better soon!
and sorry for the shorter reply
She was sitting quietly now, eyes wandering over the pages with a certain degree of acceptance. Not a lot, by any means, but enough. Her watery eyes shone, the darkness of them contrasting with the moonlight, allowing specks of white to appear in them. The moonlight seemed to be embracing the two girls, and Lucille had the impression that, were it not for the girl beside her, the light would have felt cold and unattached.
The words on her parchment appeared clearer now, almost highlighted by the light. Lucille looked away from them, finally meeting Elena's eyes. Her words seemed to echo in the quiet classroom. Everything else within her? What else was there? Lucille's mind wandered, searching for any other accomplishment she could use to describe herself. The little black kitten who was currently asleep in her dorm would thank her for taking it in. Some students she had met might credit her with making their day a little better. But what was all that worth, really, if she could not help herself?
You don't have to pretend with me. The words struck her, startled her a little. Was she pretending? She hadn't noticed. The act was just as much for Elena as it was for herself. Feigning confidence, bravery, determination, and all those other daring emotions was often how Lucille accomplished them. Even now, when she had been lying about the manageable workload, it was an attempt to tell herself it was alright, that she could do it, even if it was too much to cover in one night. "My pace feels so incredibly slow compared to the rest. And it is far too slow to learn everything before exam season." Her words were slow, forced out. Lucille was not accustomed to admitting her defeats to anyone, much less herself. She took a deep breath, gathering up her thoughts before speaking. "Please help me," she said in a soft voice, wincing at how hopeless she sounded. Asking for help was one thing, seeming so pathetic while she did so was another.
Still, there was something about Elena that made Lucille feel she could trust her. Perhaps it was the way she had insisted on calming her, getting through to her, instead of diving straight into work. Perhaps it was the soft tone in her voice, or the concern that she almost seemed to emit like light, or maybe her lack of sleep and desperation had simply made her vulnerable. Whatever it was, Lucille was slowly letting go of her expectation of an O in astronomy. Instead, her criteria for happiness was drastically falling until she felt that simply passing would be enough. Ironic, since just two seconds ago, Lucille had been worrying about her grade. Now, the worry remained, but she was beginning to let go and, along with it, her will to work left her.
Only a few minutes ago, she had been unwilling to face her workload out of fear. Now, it was slowly morphing to unwillingness to face it out of defeat. Was there a point in trying when the whole world had already surpassed her? She had been so excited to learn about magic in Hogwarts, it had never once struck her that she wouldn't be able to understand it.

ahhh sorry i took so long
The gentleness in Elena's voice calmed her, urging her to relax. It felt as if they had all the time in the world right now, although truthfully, morning would come much, much sooner than she would like it to, and Lucille knew this. In no time at all, the sun would be rising, a welcome sight, but it would mean that any hope she had of studying the stars would be lost. Perhaps an exaggeration, considering the night had barely begun, but Lucille felt as if one hundred nights would not be enough time.
Nonetheless, she pushed all thoughts away from her mind, latching on to Elena's words instead. The second year was right; it was her pace, whether she liked it or not. Currently, she didn't feel as if she did, but the only way to improve her pace would be to start. Or something along those lines. Lucille tried to recall some proverb or cliche that might help her think; it was funny how old sayings that might seem so typical and obvious were often times exactly what one needed to hear. Perhaps that was why they had lasted the test of time. As of right now, all she could think of was practice makes perfect and if you fail, try, try again, both equally condescending and unhelpful.
Elena's words, however, contained the simplistic understanding of her situation that she wished to have right now. She could not compare herself to someone else, since she would not truly know the other person's journey; one can not completely imagine themselves in another person's position, no matter how much they try. Perhaps that was why empathy was such a difficult concept for some people.
Then, she did something unexpected. Elena pulled her in for an embrace, a sudden movement. At first, Lucille's shoulders tensed; she was typically quite an affectionate being, but perhaps it was her vulnerability that had caught her off guard. But, after half a moment of her processing what was happening, she relaxed. Her shoulders dropped and she closed her eyes, threatening to spill their tears once more. But, perhaps a bit too quickly for comfort, Elena let go, and Lucille blinked away the newfound tears in her eyes. It had felt like home, like letting her family hold her when she was upset, and unlike Hogwarts. Lucille had not hugged Elena back, but she had almost collapsed completely, and now there was an expression of trust in her eyes, like a stray dog fed once and now devoted for life. The simple gesture had meant far too much for her and, had her mind not been so scattered, she would have been embarrassed. Instead, she looked straight at Elena, awaiting her next words of wisdom or advice, and, sure enough, she refocused to their work.
The overwhelming feeling of having too much to relearn and revise threatened to return, but she stayed resolute, refusing to let the pages blur together again. Sheepishly, Lucille reached for a page in the messy assortment. Despite the haphazard arrangement of the parchment, it seemed as if she was well aware of where everything was, her movements showing no hesitation. As she cleared a space in front of her and placed the paper down, she glanced at Elena, trying to gauge her reaction, to make sure she wasn't thinking her stupid or undisciplined. It contained the most basic notes on the moon and planets, clearly from one of the earliest Astronomy lessons. The girl had lagged behind since day one, or at least, near it.
"From the beginning," she said finally, a determined tone in her voice. She tried not to think of how much time it would take. After all, Elena was right. Her path was her own, and it was not slow, simply different.
