Avery couldn’t believe how far she had come without getting hit by a spell. She watched and winced as her team fell around her, but she refused to avert her attention away from her job. Getting as far ahead as she could.
Then there was the trees. Of course it had to be trees. Avery winced as they hit her. Her pain tolerance was decent, but that didn’t mean that trees slapping against you didn’t hurt. Was it as bad as what had happened to her in the past such as when she crashed her broom and broke her leg? No, but it was part of the list of things that did hurt her in a sport.
Avery sighed as she continued going. Deciding what her next move would be. She wasn’t completely sure as to what she was to do next as she wasn’t completely unaware of all the rules of the sport, but she knew enough to know what she had to do. She had to get past the finish line and help her team work their hardest.
They were going to do it. The would make it past the other team and lead themselves to victory. That would be better than losing everyone like the last rigged Quidditch match she’d played in.

Forced by the wind, she wanted to shut her eyes, yet she let them remain open for the game. Suddenly, a sound as if someone were casting a spell came from beside her. She reached for her wand at her hip and became more alert. But the spell seemed to have failed; she could relax a little now.
Rosaline leaned forward to accelerate. In front of her was a narrow passageway. Clutching her Comet 180, she carefully directed the broom so as not to hit the hard wall. She made it! Yet another obstacle came. Three trees lined up beside their flying track. The branches in front of her struck Rosaline ruthlessly. She winced. Her brows furrowed. Luckily, she passed through them, though she suffered some damage. Glancing at her clothes, Rosaline knew she definitely should use the Mending Charm on them afterward. It was quite humorous that she got hit by all three of the trees. The corner of her lips curled up. Not the best day to be close to nature, she thought.
After a while, she passed unit 5 uneventfully. But a narrower passageway was coming her way. She hadn’t prepared for it in time. Her side collided heavily with the wall. She grimaced and sucked in a sharp breath. By angling her broom correctly, she didn’t hit the wall again.
The cold wind was still blowing. Verity and Mamori from Team 1 were ahead of her teammates. She clutched her broom tighter, ready to face the next challenges.

morning
Vera nodded. At the very least, her teammate was not concussed. She wasn't so sure about his claims of being 'sturdy', but Vera shrugged. Some people just had thicker skin than others, and Mamori seemed to be one of them. Whether that was true or not, Vera would just have to find out.
Being called 'captain' outside of her own sport, however, threw Verity off slightly. She was a Duelling Captain, yes, but this was the first time she'd ever ridden on a broom for competition. The last time she did ride a broom, she nearly became a tomato splatter on the castle's brick and stone walls. You could even ask Percival about it, if you wanted to; he was there. Either way, Vera wasn't exactly sure what made her qualified for this position, but she paid it no mind. There was no time to panic in the middle of a game. Panic later, game now.
Vera leaned forward, ready to continue flying. "Haven't thought of one, sorry!"
Only, she probably would've flown better if one of the older kids hadn't snatched her wand from right under her nose. One second, it was in her hand. The next? Gone. Gone with the wind. Vera grumbled. Well, that was one of her methods of attack gone. But with the speed she was going, she simply breathed out. I don't really need it, anyway. She looked up and forward, settling on continuing her pace, and put two hands on the handle of her broom. Before she was a duellist, she was a Muggle(-born), and one of her hobbies before coming to Hogwarts was horse riding. Wands and magic were just an added bonus to her favourite sport. It would've been nice, of course, to still have it. But she could make do without it.
All that reasoning over losing her wand led her to going blind from pigeon poop in her eyes and getting wrapped up in vines. Vera yelped, trying to push herself up and out of the vines grasp.
"Shit." She shook her head. There damn pigeons really had nowhere else to poop but on her eyes. What impeccable timing. Getting out of the vines was going to be a difficult task.

The Deep End
Zephyr was not sure which part of broom racing he expected to be the hardest, is it balancing on a broom? Or casting spell while zooming through the air? Or maybe trying not to slam into something or someone? Turned out the answer was all of it. Everything was happening so fast, there were shouts, crashes, spells flashing past him and for a moment he almost he forgot he was even holding a broom. He pushed forward quickly and in doing so, his heart was beating so loud and so fast in his chest, he was afraid it will burst any moment from adrenaline rush. He kept reminding himself to calm himself down, steady his breathing and focus on the task at hand. Right now, he was taking whatever comfort he could get.
He shot into the narrow passageway and immediately, cold air whipped past his face. He somehow expected to slam straight into the wall, but by miracle or luck, he squeezed through without hurting half his shoulder. He actually made it through cleanly. Thank Merlin! He didn’t slow down, not wanting to lose the momentum he built for himself, time is of essence here. His view opened into the path going to the forest and caught sight of the mess that was happening ahead of him. He barely got enough time to register everything before the trees attacked him next. The first branch he avoided by pure luck or so he would like to believe. The second, he was not so lucky.
WHACK.
“OW!!!” He almost bit his tongue, or maybe he did as he tasted something metallic, must be blood, he unconsciously gripped his broom handle so hard his knuckles went white. There was pain he felt down his arm too, but that didn’t deter his focus. He just blink rapidly until his eyes refocused. Two more sets of branches came at him, and he dodged them, but the pain stayed in his arm. He may not be the fastest or the strongest and he didn’t have a fancy broom but he was still in air and for a newbie like him, there was something incredible about that. It didn’t even matter to him whether he was bruised, behind compared to the rest of his teammates, and slightly overwhelmed. All he could was took deep short breathes and pushed forward out of the forest path.

This was both exciting and intimidating all at once.
After a rather unsuccessful first attempt at joining an unofficial Quidditch game that ended with him staring at Hospital walls for a few days, Percival hadn't expected to be back on his broom so quickly again. In the back of his mind, the fear of getting knocked off his broom still lingered somewhere. The last thing he wanted was to ever spend time in the hospital again, and between advanced spells, obstacles, and difficult terrain, broom racing offered a serious risk of ending up there.
But this time would be different.
He had a new broom.
Percival adjusted his grip and looked down at the more polished wood of his Comet 180 with a little smile. Compared to the school broom he had used during his Quidditch game, his new broom felt like a huge leap forward. It was much faster, and it hadn't even been too expensive either. It was the perfect upgrade to start being more competitive.
Especially in a game where @Maisie Gemmell was on the opposite team. She had quite the competitive spirit as well, between this and her duelling adventures, so he wondered how she'd feel about competing against him. Perhaps, in the future, they could even be on the same team for unofficial games. An exciting thought he paused for now, as he readied himself for his first sprint.
The strategies were made, and he knew what his team expected from him. So, as soon as the signal was given, he accelerated without looking back. He counted on and trusted his team to perform their tasks, and he knew what his was.
He was going to do everything he could to finish first.

The fact that their opponents had some fancy botanical-zoological amalgamation while they couldn't even manage basic branding was tragically on-brand for their ragtag operation. "We've hit rock bottom in terms of team aesthetics and somehow we're still digging," Mamori shook his head as he watched Vera accelerate into the distance, the remark slipped out before he could stop himself.
Not that team names mattered much in the grand scheme of things, a fancy label wouldn't block a blatch or propel anyone forward on the track. And Mamori happens to have some more pressing matters to attend to since the first year in the unit ahead had helpfully decided to slow down just enough to present a perfect target.
The timing couldn't have been better. With no teammates around to support the poor girl and a clear angle of approach Mamori simply went for it. After spending countless hours studying and copying Atlas's move — Hogwarts' undisputed queen of blatching whose techniques were basically scripture at this point — failing to take down a mere firstie would be grounds for immediate retirement.
The collision went exactly as expected; eleven-year-olds with barely enough flight hours to stay airborne were laughably predictable in their trajectories, much like lemmings marching toward the same cliff every single time. Now sharing the same unit as his recently blatched victim, Mamori adjusted his goggles and treated @Lucille Rosenhart an infuriating grin. If he had to hold back the trash talk, the least he could do was display some visible smugness, as keeping such a clear advantage to himself would be downright unhealthy.xx ─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────

── The wind seemed harsher now, or perhaps Cecilia had simply slowed down enough to notice now. Loose auburn strands lashed against her face. Still, the thrill of her flight plastered a wide grin on her face as she pressed on. Up ahead was a narrow passageway. Instinct told her to not play it safe, especially after her last risk failed to bear fruit. Her right fingers wrapped tighter around her broom before she whipped out her wand. As Cecilia neared the gap, she traced a loop in the air.
“Lumos,” she spoke with conviction. As though it obeyed her command, the tip of her wand began to emit a white glow. The sight made her grin stretch wider, though she could not relax yet. Her breath hitched as she steadied herself for the passageway. The wall was a little too close for comfort, but she managed to steer clear of it. A soft sigh of relief escaped her lips once she was out, but her worries were far from over.
There were hardly any other players nearby, so she began to grow concerned about her pace. However, she appeared to have had bigger problems to deal with — the trees. With a steady exhale, she braced herself. No matter what happened next, she was determined to give it her all.
"LET'S GO RAMS!" she yelled, hoping her words of encouragement would reach whoever was nearby.

XX𝕿he race was turning to be more and more chaotic with each second. As she saw Verity fly ahead, the girl was caught up in the vines. What the point of being so far ahead if you were stuck, and with poop on your face. Violence winced, that was gross. She felt bad for the girl but what could she even do? Vera was too far ahead. She was also sure she had seen Vera's wand fly out of her hand and now she couldn't scourgify her eyes either.
A little ahead of her, up in the air, Zephyr, who she was sure had sent her flying forward, had gotten out of the trees. It was quite impressive to see somebody with a school broom still be up in the air and dodge the attack of the branches. She felt her heart drop, this was a bad idea. She couldn't even hold on to her broom and was already on the ground. Maybe something's just weren't meant for her. Thank god Sébastien wasn't here to see this. He would have been so disappointed to see Violence failing like this. She just wanted to walk out of the ground while she was still on it and go back to her potions homework. Unfortunately, she knew she couldn't do that.
As she saw a young Gryffindor girl fly up ahead of her, she decided the best she could do from the ground was cast a spell at the girl. That was something she was good at, she could cast the spell and could have atleast done something. So she raised her wand and cast a Verdimillious, and it failed. God, she needed to concentrate if she wanted her spell to hit, but the chaos around her had made her brain go haywire.
She sighed, she would need to cast again with much more focus and concentration if she wanted to succeed. Was that the right thing to do? She wasn't sure but she didn't know what to do either. She stood, thinking what could help her team in the race at this point.

The Deep End

The wind slammed into Althea's face and hair as she steered herself deeper down the track. The broom flew steadily despite the instability that had settled into her from the earlier blatch, a true mark of the broom marker’s excellent craftsmanship. Her eyes stung slightly with every blink, and she tightly kept her mouth shut as she approached the dark passage ahead. The darkness enveloped her at once, swallowing her vision. TWACK. Althea hissed as her left shoulder collided into a jagged rock, sending electrifying pain deep into the flesh of her shoulder. The pain pulsed, but there was surely only more to come if she did not pull forward. She forced her form straight and leaned forward, guiding herself towards the end of the passageway. In her vicinity, Althea heard the whizz of Avery and Rosaline flying alongside her.
As soon as she exited the passageway, sudden light burned her eyes, blinding her momentarily. Althea winced as the feeling of rough bark scraped against her right cheek and arm, eyes peeling open to dodge the trees ahead. She kept her grip steady and body centered, maneuvering herself to avoid the remainder of the trees. She bit down on her lip to suppress the flinch at the loud crashes of her teammates in the background, with Rosaline taking the worst of all the trees standing in their way. Althea glanced around to ensure Avery and Rosaline were still on their broom, but when she swivelled back–
CRASH
The Hufflepuff gasped as her torso crashed into a wall of stone in yet another passageway, more treacherous than the last, with its jagged edges and winding passage. She gritted her teeth, willing herself to recover and focus on the passageway.
