broom racing SLYTHERIN vs. RAVENCLAW fall 2024

The boy knew he was in trouble the moment he mounted his wily and sometimes recalcitrant Valerama. Smack talk was just part of the sport, but Colin knew well that the Ravens were no clowns when it came to racing. Both teams shot from the starting line fighting! He gave Vale a satisfied smirk as they plucked the elder eagle's feathers for her. Prince was disarmed, debroomed and disallowed from her maiden flight!

Colin watched as Dealla plummeted towards the earth while her wand and broom scattered in every direction. "See you at the finish line, Prince --- if you can walk that far!" he called down to the opposing racer. A beautiful day to beat Slytherin indeed!

Well, that of course remained to be seen. There was still the matter of the Curse of the Basilisks. What remained to be seen: would it actually be Ravenclaw that beat the crafty serpents, or would it be the curse!

Colin turned his attention back to the race, only to find one --- no, two --- no wait! Three of his mates were down! Starkey was in the lead, as he should be with Ginger Snaps right behind! But Ava, June and Vale had been knocked to the ground! Vale Ashwood's voice floated up to him: "The birds are afraid! As they should! Your fates are sealed! No survivors!"

Colin grinned. Until the girls got back on their brooms, it would be up to him to protect Astra and Wyatt. He sang back down: "Aye aye cap! No survivors!"

Most of her team mates did not seem inclined to participate in the friendly trash talking - all except one. Brookline, who was almost as new to racing as Dee was, followed up with a chirpy, albeit a bit uncertain, comment aimed at the Slytherin team. Grinning, Dee shot her a wink and a sneaky thumbs up. They could work on the creativity of her retorts during their next training.

Humming happily, Dee mounted her shiny new Starsweeper, prepared to follow their strategy and kick off as soon as the start of the race was signalled, to secure an early lead for Ravenclaw - but something else caught her attention first.

"DEE!"

Her head swiveled around like it was being pulled on a string, glancing towards the stands where the holler had come from. She placed the voice with a half-second of delay - she hadn't known Mad had been planning to come. They'd talked about the race, but only made plans to meet up this evening. But then, no warning could have prepared her for the spectacle that followed.

Her hand, half raised for a cheerful wave, froze mid-air as Madhup quite literally tore off his clothing, seemingly unperturbed by the cool October air. The breath she'd been taking reversed and came out as an ugly snort, followed by a full on guffaw as she burst out laughing at the gigantic sparkling D that covered his upper body. Self-consciousness was not usually in Dee's vocabulary, but Madhup clearly had her beat when it came to full and utter shamelessness. Where had he gotten that Ravenclaw banner from?

Distracted as she was, she almost missed the signal, and took off with a split-second of delay - but she wasn't fated to get very far, anyway. Whether it was in reaction to her earlier ribbing, or because she was an unknown face and potential threat, the Slytherin team zeroed in on her immediately. Dee was still giggling at Mad's display, her shoulders shaking slightly, when suddenly her broom was ripped from between her fingers and she was falling. Her stomach lurched, panic shooting through her, and she had to fight the urge to flail uselessly through the air - this, this feeling was exactly why she'd avoided broom sports for so long.

But then, she'd spent a decent amount of the summer on her broom, and practicing how to fall had been part of her slightly excessive training regimen. Instead of lashing about, she spread out her arms and legs to slow her fall, then twisted and curled up to break impact when she was about to hit. Even so, the force of it knocked the breath from her lungs and she groaned, letting her arms and legs flop to the ground as she stared at the sky, eyes watering.

She sat up after a moment, and gave the white-haired Slytherin kid a mocking salute as he flew past. "Just giving you a little head start!" she called after him. "My team has me covered until I catch up." Or so she hoped. Pushing herself to her feet, she caught another glance of Mad and Aly in the stands, and the corner of her mouth twitched up despite herself. Not the start to her first race that she had envisioned, certainly, and not the impression she would have wanted to make on Madhup, but there was no changing that now.

She blew them a kiss for good measure - despite that suboptimal kickoff, she did appreciate their presence - then fished in her pocket for her wand to retrieve her broom... only to find it missing. "Fuck," she muttered emphatically, her eyes immediately searching the ground around her. Had she lost it in the fall, or had she been targeted by more than one spell? Losing her wand felt a lot worse than losing her broom - the latter was a tool for the sake of the sport, the former was a part of her, like an arm or a leg.

No matter. There was no time to lose, and she was useless here on the ground. It was time to get back on her broom.

"Mallory sends Quinn high above the track as several of the fallen snakes return to the air. The eagles have more birds in play, and they seem to be trying to bench more opponents while they have the time. Ranvier aims for Starkey (looks like the knee-reversal hex?) and Gwild goes for Norrick (unclear what he's sending), but neither hits their mark. Norrick and Starkey are able to evade and perform a flawless alley-oop.

"A large group of racers heads through the fog, and only Fernandez comes out of it bright-eyed—I guess snoozing through the first round served her right here. These begining-of-the-race nap strategies have less detriment on the outcome than you'd think! However, McCroire speeds ahead, despite his foggy disposition, and passes Quinn, the Ravenclaw lead, who is currently traveling upward not forward. McCroire follows Starkey through the waterfall. A little water pressure is nothing for these season broom racers. And thanks to Norrick's boost, Starkey is barreling for a very decisive lead. He takes a quick knock from a branch, but that's not going to slow him down in the slightest.
