Scent of hot cocoa, followed by the smell of hot paper freshly run through a printer. Lastly, a blend of wet-dog smell, petrichor, and sweat. Finally, just a hint of vanilla, and an afterscent of peppermint.

Polyjuice Potion:

The drinker may first notice the blue sloshiness of the liquid within, with stripes of purple throughout the phial. Bright pink sparks seem to emanate from the top of the phial.

A scent of owl feathers and fresh hay might be followed by an after-scent of coconut and grapes.

At the first sip, they would be overwhelmed with a strong taste of chocolate and caramel, with a peanut butter aftertaste. The liquid is thick, with the consistency of a milkshake, despite its distinctly non-milky appearance.

History:

Sophia Maria Nelson was actually born - and mostly raised - in the United States. She comes from a small town in the state of Georgia. She went to a small muggle school and lived an ordinary muggle life with her parents.

Then, when she was nine years old, her parents were in a fatal car crash. With nowhere else to go, Sophia was sent to Ireland to live with her maternal grandma. She loved her grandma very much, but she never really felt like she belonged. After all, all of her friends were still in the United States. She told herself they were only a call or text away, but that never helped when they didn't call or text.

Since then, Sophia mostly stuck to herself. She spent a lot of time with her grandma, watching television, reading books, and attending Mass every week. The two were very close, but still Sophia felt so, so lonely.

Everything changed just before her tenth birthday, when her grandmother decided to throw Sophia a birthday party to cheer her up. She invited all of her friends' children and grandchildren to the party, yet no one came. As Sophia cried alone in the backyard of their home, the decorations and cake were destroyed, as if by magic.

Her grandma never brought the incident up again, but there was always a bit of pity and sadness in those old eyes from that moment forward.

Jennifer Ann Nelson[1985 - 2020] (Maiden name Collins) was a teacher. She loved kids more than anything since she was a teenager. She was closer to her students than most people were with their actual kids. She would often regale her husband and daughter with stories from her third grade class, never forgetting a name or face of a single student of hers.

She was immensely close to Sophia. Both girls told each other everything, within reason. She was always there to talk with her daughter, yet she knew when to leave the girl alone. Such understanding was always present.

She was the source of Sophia's fervent - yet progressive - Catholicism.

She actually met her husband in college, but they weren't all that similar. For instance, she loved painting, and babysitting, and camping, while Todd did not. She was a more 'outdoorsy' person, while her husband preferred to stay inside. Yet still they loved each other very much. After all, they gave each other the gift most precious to either of them: Sophia.

☆ Penelope Collins ☆

Penelope Christine Collins [1970 - Present] is Jennifer's mother and Sophia's grandmother. She is the only family Sophia has left in the world - except for a few distant aunts and uncles she's never even met - and she certainly acts like it. She's kind beyond belief, despite only having met Sophia a handful of times before her parents died.

Having lost a daughter and son-in-law at the same time that Sophia lost her parents, Penelope and Sophia came together to grieve as a family, which helped Sophia to accept the situation far more easily. Penelope continued to be strong for her grandbaby.

She is a very Catholic woman, yet, despite her age, she is open to her granddaughter's progressive views, even adopting a few of them herself. She cares about people, even directly contradicting her own faith's Bible if it means helping another person.

She suffered from a small crisis of faith when Sophia was delivered a letter from the prestigious wizarding school Hogwarts, but she quickly accepted that it was simply meant to be that Sophia could become a witch.

☆ Todd Nelson ☆

Theodore 'Todd" Alan Nelson [1983-2020] was a very boring man, in his younger years. He spent all of his time inside, exploring traditionally 'nerdy' hobbies, such as video games, comics, and programming languages.

This changed slightly as he entered university. He wasn't eager to explore new things at first, but then he met Jennifer, the woman who would one day be his wife. The two got along famously, with her coaxing him out of his shell, and him keeping her grounded when she overextended herself. They were made for one another, despite their differences. He was a programming guru, while she could barely understand Excel. He was a Marvel aficionado, while she liked M. Night Shyamalan's movies. But the one thing they both had in common was their love for Sophia.

His relationship with Sophia was different than that of his wife. His wife liked to openly discuss everything, sure, and she was often there to coddle Sophia as a baby, but Todd was a bit different. He was less 'parental' with Sophia compared to his wife. He treated her like a tiny adult, explaining things to her despite their complexity, never once using 'baby talk,' and even using foul language in front of her on occasion. (Though never when angry!)

Sophia loved being treated like an actual grown-up, so she was very much a Daddy's girl, yet despite his assertion that he didn't coddle her, it wasn't uncommon to find a small Sophia curled up in her dad's lap after a particularly nasty head bump, as the older man pet away her tears.

☆ Amelia Nelson ☆

Amelia 'Rory' Nelson (born July 18th, 2021) is Sophia's best friend in the whole world - not counting Kim and Sage. They met on the Spring Break of Sophia's first year, and they've been inseparable ever since. Sophia brings Amelia with her everywhere except class - yet she has been known to attempt sneaking her into class. The owl is really well behaved.

In fact, Amelia is often the 'angel' on Sophia's shoulder when she's attempting any kind of mischief, offering a disapproving tilt of the head and a light peck on Sophia's neck. Despite her objections, she still always goes along with Sophia's plans and schemes, albeit reluctantly. It helps that Sophia always has a pocket full of owl treats.

Her name comes from 'Amelia' - after the famous pilot - and 'Rory' - due to her Irish heritage.

Sophia is fresh faced and innocent, with neat red hair and modest dress. Her Catholicism impacts her style heavily. She only wears skirts and dresses, and modest ones at that. She's always wearing a steel cross necklace. She occasionally wears glasses in class.

Sophia has been teased for her red hair, so she decided to try something drastic: She colored her hair blue. However, a mishap in the haircut stage of the styling led to her having it cut quite a bit shorter. She still dresses very modestly and wears her usual cross necklace. She doesn't wear her glasses at all anymore.

Sophia is continuing her new tradition of dyeing her hair annually. This time, she settled on a teal color, liking the way it clashes with her eyes. She's now more adventurous with her clothing, wearing pants and hoodies from time to time, and she only rarely wears her cross necklace due to a crisis of faith. She doesn't smile nearly as often as she did in her first two years of education.

Sophia's hair is longer than ever before, almost reaching her backside. She's dyed it blonde this time, not eager to be the center of attention, and keeps it in a long braid to keep it tame. Yes, it seems this year she's more intent on fading into the background. Her lack of glasses isn't a problem anymore, since she now wears colored contact lenses, going for a deep blue for her eyes. She wears whatever clothing she finds comfortable. Plain tees, jeans, you name it. Her cross necklace is long gone, having been discarded for good.

This year, Sophia isn't recognizable at all compared to the eager, innocent young lady she was in her first year. Her hair is snowy white, completing the arctic look granted by her icy blue contact lenses. She's almost always wearing a smirk, a twisted abomination compared to her younger smile. Her smirk is typically directed at students suffering from embarrassment or some other misfortune. Sophia is quite bitter in her 5th year of study. Her clothing is far more stylish than before, but she isn't adverse to wearing skulls or any anti-religious imagery upon her clothes.

If Sophia from year 5 was a complete departure from who she was as a first year, then year 6's Sophia pushes the limit of that departure. She has black hair, now, buzzed on one side and long on the other. Her clothes are typically either more revealing or pushing for a 'punk' aesthetic. She is now the total antithesis stylistically from where she stood in her first year. Her cross necklace is still long gone, but she has new piercings to replace it. Not only does she have piercings going all the way up her earlobes, but she also has an eyebrow piercing and a tongue piercing. The only piercings she has yet to get are a nose piercing and a navel piercing, but she knows she has plenty of time. She smiles a bit more now, but sometimes it looks forced. She occasionally likes to wear a black collar, though she never gives an answer when questioned about why.

Sophia has finally found her own sense of style, moving on from the influences of her former religion and the influences of the troublemakers she'd associated with in years prior. Now she no longer dyes her hair, having accepted herself as a person. She smiles far more genuinely than she has in a long time. She only occasionally wears her various body piercings, but she does wear an old familiar pair of green earrings quite often. She kept the blue contact lenses, deciding that the color had seen her through some good and bad times, so she may as well keep it. She dresses modestly, on occasion, but she doesn't allow any limitations on her style because of it. For instance, if she feels like wearing a tank top and short shorts, she doesn't feel even a little guilty. In other words, her new style is based entirely around freedom.

Appearance:

Sophia’s light Auburn, verging on red, hair reaches her lower back, though it is rare that she will wear it completely down. She prefers neat updos, especially ponytails.

She rarely ever wears her glasses, despite her awful nearsightedness. She only wears them when she’s reading or doing homework. Quite often she even forgoes them when flying or in class. She thinks that they make her eyes look too big, even with smaller oval frames. She also doesn’t like the way they frame her face, so she often leaves two strands of hair along the sides of her face to offset this, but only when wearing glasses. Otherwise, her bangs are always neatly pulled back.

Having grown up in a Catholic household, Sophia usually wears very conservative clothes. Cute, simple dresses are her staple when she isn’t in her school uniform. A good way of describing the dresses is ‘prim and proper’ with skirts past the knee and flowery patterns, but they look as if they belong on someone far more elegant and less clumsy than her. When she’s feeling more casual, a comfortable skirt and a t-shirt are also not out of place on Sophia. The only time she’s normally in pants is when she’s sleeping. She’s not a fan of nightgowns.
