The thick London air filled Pax's lungs as they exited from their father's car. Glancing at Gingersnaps and the stowaway, they grinned.

"Come on, guys! I can't wait for you to meet my the rest of my family!"

The house Pax's parents and siblings lived was tall, with three storeys and an attic (converted to a bedroom). Helping their dad by grabbing their bags, Pax walked over to the door and prepared to kick-

"Pax! Keys!"

Pax smiled sheepishly. "Oops. Sorry Dad!"

Their dad looked back and forth for any potential muggles, before using his wand to shoot the keys into the keyhole and turning the lock. The door opened on its own, revealing a small dingy corridor, with almost ominous staircases on either side.

But Pax knew better.

They grabbed their bags and headed on in. "Mummmm! We're home!"

"Through here!"

Light burst out from the other end of the corridor to reveal the place Pax loved to call home.

The room itself was about 8ft wide and 10 ft long. Walls were bare brick, though the entire back wall was comprised of three large window panels that had been enchanted to show the treetops and the sky. Given that it was early evening, the sky was just starting to tint orangey-pink. On the left was a small yet open kitchen. The countertops were a warm coral colour that matched well with the bricks. A long large wooden dining table surrounded by roughly ten mismatched chairs was decorated with a yellow and white striped tablecloth and two vases of semi-wilting flowers. To the right was a living space of a well-worn leather sofa decorated with more mismatched cushions, a scuffed coffee table adorned with various books, toys, quills and other stationery and other knick-knacks. In front of the sofa was an old television from the early 2000s, propped on top of a set of drawers that were filled with random muggle objects, such as torches, cables and old alarm clocks. At the back corner of the room was a metal staircase leading to the floor above.

The familiar sight made Pax smile contently. They loved home. "And this is the place I call home."

"Pax!"

"Mum!"

Bags were dropped as Pax charged at their mother who had emerged from the metal staircase.

"Gah, it's been ages!"

"I missed you too, Paxie."

"Do I not get a hug?"

A shorter boy emerged on the staircase, a book in hand and glasses perched on his nose. His tone wasn't sad, but more playful, seen by the smirk that snuck onto his face.

"Jason! If you want a hug, then come here! God, you were always stubborn."

The boy broke into a grin, and ran down the stairs into Pax's arms.

"....Missed this."

"Missed you too, Jase."

Pax suddenly remembered the guests hopefully waiting in the corridor. "Oops."

They quickly hurried back over to them, pulling them forwards into the light and sitting them on the sofa. "Guys, this is my mum and younger brother Jason. Mum, Jase, this is my friend Sophia." they gestured towards the ginger-haired girl. "And this is Sophia's friend, and my kinda-friend, Hiro."

They looked around. Their dad was coming with the other bags, but the last member of the family was nowhere to be seen. "You might wanna cover your ears," they warned the two guests.

"NICO ZHANG, GET YOUR BUTT DOWN HERE RIGHT NOW BEFORE I HEX YOUR HAIR OFF!"

"Technically, you can't use magic outside of Hogwarts until you surpass the age of 18-"

"Oh shut up, Jason, my point still stands-"

"Without a proper argument, your point cannot stand so therefore your threat holds no real, well, threat."

"Oh my god, Jason!"

"Right, that's enough." Pax's dad walked forwards. "Nico, come downstairs. Now."

The thud of stairs indicated an older boy of 13 stomp down the stairs. His black hair was messy and he had a pair of headphones round his neck.

"What?"

"Purely decorational, the headphones," Pax whispered. "But this is my older brother, Nico. He's a badger. And of course, you've met my dad. So that's everyone!"

"Pax, be a good host and show them to your room."

"Oh, right! Come on!"

They pulled up their friends once again and pulled them up the staircase. "Ignore some of the mess and bags," they said sheepishly. "After we go to Ireland to visit you, Soph, we're going back to China to see family. It's a tradition, we go every year."

Leading the pair up the staircase, they barely stopped on the second floor. "The bathroom's on this floor, as are my brothers' room. But you'll be staying in my room on the next floor."

On cue, they emerged at the third floor. "The floor above is just my parents' room, we don't need to go up there. But... here is my room."

It was a bit smaller than most of the other rooms in the house, however there was a little space for any potential friends to stay over. The bed itself was covered in various items-clothes, quills, books, stuffed animals, etc-and pushed to one side, with two roll mats laid out on the floor next to the bed. The walls were a pale gray, but you could barely see anything over the amount tacked onto the walls. Pax's school trunk was lying, pushed to the end of their bed, and the wardrobe doors were wide open. Little storage was actually used, and if it was, it was overflowing the contents.

"Room opposite is the library. Feel free to go in, but no food or drink, Dad's pretty strict on that. Just let us know if you take out a book so Dad can keep track of it. He'd hate for any of them to get lost. But, that's pretty much it, so make yourselves at home!"

They opened their trunk and pushed everything that was on their bed into it, before flopping onto the bed.

"It's good to be home."

At first, Sophia'd felt a bit guilty about not going straight home to Ireland to see her grandma. She'd certainly missed the woman, but she couldn't resist the chance to see an actual wizard family's house. And, admittedly, part of her already missed Hogwarts quite terribly, so being around Pax and Hiro just made it feel like she was still there, in some small way.

She'd been surprised that Pax's father owned a car. She'd imagined a family broomstick or something. She didn't know which would have been more terrifying, to be honest. She hated heights, sure, but being in a car as a passenger after the accident with her parents always made her feel on edge. She'd spent the whole ride in silence, hoping she'd seemed like a tourist peeking out the windows, with her fists holding fistfuls of her t-shirt.

Sophia was relieved as they finally arrived, and, to her surprise, it looked just like a normal muggle street. She'd expected a tower or something, but Pax wasn't fully wizard, apparently, so maybe there was some muggle influence too?

Pax had a little back-and-forth with their dad as they planned to - apparently - kick the door open? The man's experience with his demi-daughter proved powerful, though, because he stopped them with only two words. It was impressive. He did some magic with his keys - Sophia still hardly knew anything about magic, so she certainly didn't understand what he'd done, or why he even needed keys instead of just using Alohomora.

The first sight filled Sophia with just a bit of fear. The staircases looked like they were straight out of a horror movie. All she was missing was a pair of ghost children slowly walking down them. Sophia looked pointedly at Hiro and gave him a nudge, hoping he'd take the lead in following Pax.

When they reached the actual room at the end of the corridor, Sophia's fears were quickly forgotten. It was a room full of color, excitement, and various knick-knacks, and if she were a ruder girl, she'd have touched everything, but she wasn't, and so she didn't. Instead she just stood shyly in the doorway as Pax approached their family, filling the room with hugs and banter.

Sophia was a bit jealous as Pax hugged their mom especially, but she was happy to see her friend so happy.

As Pax introduced her to her mom and Jason, Sophia attempted a smile and muttered a nervous, "H-hi, I'm Sophia. It's nice to meet you."

Then Pax called their other brother down in a very, well, Pax-like way. By shouting. Very loudly. And threatening to hex him.

Sophia's eyes crinkled in amusement at Pax and Jason's little debate about the validity of their threats, but then Pax's dad came into the room with the bags, his presence very, very commanding. Sophia watched him nervously as he called the other sibling down for - she assumed - introductions.

The surprisingly handsome boy stomped downstairs loudly, and Sophia giggled at Pax's comment about his headphones. She'd known a few muggles like that before moving to Ireland.

"Hi, Nico. I'm Sophia. I'm in Ravenclaw, so I haven't seen you around much, but it's nice to meet you."

She shot a quick glance at Hiro, wondering if he was as nervous as she was. She'd never actually visited another friend's house before.

Sophia smiled as Pax's mom spoke again, telling them to show their room to Sophia and Hiro. Pax's mother seemed so kind.

She followed Pax, hoping she wouldn't forget the directions they were giving. At the very least, she hoped she could remember where the bathroom was. She certainly didn't want to wake them up in the middle of the night just to ask where she could go to pee. That'd be embarrassing.

As they finally settled into Pax's room, Sophia was relieved to see that it wasn't immaculately neat as she'd expected it to be. Things were strewn about here and there, and her wall - which she assumed was the same shade as the demi-girl pride flag, but she was bad with color theory - was absolutely covered, as was her bed. Maybe when they saw Soph's bedroom, they wouldn't judge her too harshly for the state of it.

She sat shyly on the edge of Pax's bed, her mind finally catching up to the rest of the night so far.

"Your mom's Canadian, isn't she?" Sophia asked out of the blue. "I thought I heard a bit of an accent."

She didn't mention that she'd noticed the accent because her friends had always teased the girl in their class who was from Michigan and had a slight Canadian accent. She'd just wanted to learn more about the demi-girl's mom. She missed her own so terribly much. Hearing about her friend's mom was as close as she'd get to seeing her again before she died.

It was the start of summer.

Even though he and Red were heading over to Pax's house directly from Hogwarts, Hiro didn't mind at all.

It wasn't as if his parents wanted him back home. Sure, they'd accept him, but only because the school had rules in place. When he'd sent a letter telling them that he'd be spending the summer with friends and then head off to summer camp, they'd quickly responded giving him permission to do so. Of course, they'd send quick replies when it came to things like this but took forever when it was something unrelated to him not coming back home. A sigh escaped him at the thought and he tried to distract himself by focusing on what Red and Pax were doing right now.

The three of them had gotten into a car, a very interesting contraption. Hiro knew what they were but had never been inside one before. After all, they had the Floo Network, apparition and trains for transportation. Why would they ever need to use muggle devices like cars? Despite his initial reluctance to spend a lot of time with Pax of all people, it was better than the alternative. Which was being alone. Sure, Pax wasn't a bad person but the two of them had history together. When it came to things that prevented him from getting closer to Akira, Hiro was a bit savage.

It hadn't escaped his notice that Red had felt rather nervous.

Perhaps she had a phobia of cars? Hiro made a mental note that Red didn't like them and preferred to avoid them.

Who knew when it would come in handy later on. Hiro followed after Red as she followed after Pax, who seemed quite energetic and excited to introduce them to their family members. It was a tall building but relatively simple from the outside. He watched as Pax's father opened the door with his wand, revealing that he was a wizard, perhaps Pax was a pureblood or wizard-born? Then again, he could also be a half-blood too. Hiro hadn't really brought any suitcases. He didn't have many possessions. All he had was an enchanted satchel that he carried himself, on his own.

It had all the things he considered to be valuable inside. A few outfits, makeup kit, a comb of vanity, a variety of hair dyes and equipment related to it, a journal, self-inking quill, a normal quill with an inkwell and parchment paper. He'd also put a divider inside the satchel and had stored all his school supplies and materials on the other side. It was pretty much his entire life inside one enchanted satchel. Hiro followed after Sophia and closed the door behind them. The initial darkness didn't bother him much. Mostly because he was with someone else. If he'd been alone...

Well, that was another story completely.

Not that anyone needed to know this. Hiro wouldn't give away a weakness of his just like that!

Plus, this particular case wasn't bad because it wasn't pure darkness. He could still see and there was nothing scary around them. Hiro only hoped no one tried to hide in the shadows and jump out at them. Because THAT would scare him. Thankfully, nothing happened, and he emerged with Red out into the light of the inner areas. Hiro let his eyes flicker over to Pax as they were welcomed by their mother and other family members. The relationship Pax had with their mother and father was so good it made him jealous. But Hiro tried not to let it show on his expression.

Since he'd had countless years to practice schooling his expressions, it was highly likely no one would notice. As Pax finally remembered them, Hiro placed a bright smile on his face and grinned at Pax's family members. He moved forward to greet them. "Nice to meet you all." And then they were warned to cover their ears and Hiro tilted his head to the side. Before he could ask why, a yell came down from above. But it wasn't too bad, well not to Hiro at least. However, he was used to people yelling at him all the time. And then, they were sent off to Pax's room upstairs.

Pax's words made Hiro raise a brow.

For the first time, he addressed him. "You have family in China?" That was interesting and unexpected.

Hiro filed away all the information he'd gotten since stepping into Pax's house. Later on, he'd review it inside his head in case he needed it in the future. As they entered Pax's room, he glanced around the area. "I claim the bed." He said, using a deadpan expression. It was hard to tell whether he was joking or not, but he was. This was all designed to see how Pax would react to his words. Hiro went over to the bed, while Pax was busy sweeping the stuff off it into his trunk, and plopped himself down onto the mattress. How would Pax respond to his challenging words?

Red had also decided to take a seat on Pax's bed, but on the edge of it. Unfortunately, either Pax didn't realize where Hiro had taken a seat, or he couldn't stop his muscles. Regardless of the reason, the demi-girl ended up flopping directly on top of Hiro's current position. "Ah! Ah! You're on top of me! On top!" Hiro exclaimed, batting at Pax's back. Despite the way Pax looked, they definitely were heavier than he'd expected! But maybe that was true for everyone. You never knew how heavy someone was until they were sitting directly on top of you! "Ahhhhhhh!!!"

"Your mom's Canadian, isn't she?" Sophia asked. "I thought I heard a bit of an accent."

Pax nodded. "Born and raised. The rest of her family still live there, we've been a few times. It's cool there- literally."

"You have family in China?" Hiro asked next.

"Yep. Well, all over the world really, but the elders in China. We visit every summer, we'll be going at the end of the month." They looked closer at Hiro. "Don't you live in Japan?"

A scream as they sat on the aforementioned boy made them yelp and move aside. "Jesus Christ, dude. Fine, you can take the bed."

After they grabbed their trunk from their dad and had dragged it back up the stairs, they let the other two talk amongst themselves as they unpacked, throwing out all their clothes from the trunk in a messy pile. Every so often, they'd sniff a piece of clothing, and wrinkle their nose if it wasn't clean, before balling it up and throwing it into a laundry basket on the other side of the room.

"So do you have any, like, summer traditions? Like, do you go anywhere? I hope I'll be seeing you both at summer camp, I helped to plan it."

Sophia watched with a playful grin as Hiro and Pax had a short struggle for the bed, though she was surprised at how easily Pax had relinquished the furniture to Hiro. She'd expected at least a bit more roughhousing on their part, but that was certainly part of Pax's charm.

She sat gently on the bed beside Hiro, leaning in a bit closer to whisper.

"Are you nervous?" she asked. "I'm so nervous! I've never stayed at someone else's house before, even in America. I don't know what to do with my hands!"

Pax seemed content to unpack their trunk, but unpack was a very loose term relative to what the demigirl was actually doing. They were mostly throwing their clothes here and there into piles, but at least they were throwing the dirty ones into a basket properly.

...though the way they sniffed the clothes as an indication was a bit off-putting.

Still, Sophia couldn't claim to be any better when it came to neatness. Her own room was a messy kerfuffle of collectibles, with comic books strewn about in relatively neat piles and posters of Marvel heroines - and Charlie Cox - plastered haphazardly all over her wall. Yeah, her own organization styles weren't much better.

Pax returned to their conversation, leading the conversation to summer.

"I, uh, my Dad used to take me up to Lake Winnepesaukah every summer, and he would always try to get me to ride the Cannonball - er, that's a roller coaster - but I always chickened out. Since I came to Ireland, though, I mostly just stay inside and play video games, to be honest..." she trailed off, feeling pretty lame about her own traditions.

"Whatcha got planned for Summer, by the way? Any cool games?" she asked with a tilt of the head.

He was learning more about Pax.

Whether he wanted to or not was beside the point. But she was an interesting girl to say the least.

If Pax hadn't ruined his moment with Akira up in the sky during the Blossom Ball earlier that year, there would have been a high chance the two could have become good friends. Still, Hiro put up with her for Red's sake. And even though he wouldn't say the two were friends, Pax wasn't that bad, although he would never admit this to them. Canadian and Chinese. An interesting combination! Hiro had always been interested in mixed races, he found them really cool and learning about new cultures was addicting and had become an obsession. Pax was a little cooler now.

"Mm. My immediate family lives in Japan and we're all Japanese. But we have some relatives in China too." Hiro told her. When Pax sat down on them and then gave in to let him have the bed, the pink haired boy grinned a little. Success! A nice soft bed was his! Well, it wasn't really that soft but it was better than the floor. And since it was Pax, Hiro didn't mind taking their host's bed from them. If it had been anyone else, he wouldn't have dared to even suggest doing so. Not that Pax would know any of this. They continued to converse for a little bit.

Sophia and Pax unpacked and settled into the room.

Hiro merely set his enchanted satchel aside and only unpacked his outfits and school supplies and materials.

Everything else, he kept inside the only piece of belonging he'd brought with him. As Pax spoke again, bringing up summer camp and asking about their summer traditions, Hiro let his eyes flicker over the two of them. Summer traditions. He wished he had them but as it was, his family... well, they wanted to pretend he didn't even exist and therefore there had been no traditions he knew of. Not that he'd reveal this to them. Hiro had only ever briefly touched on this subject with one person. Someone he'd never thought to ever get close to before in such a manner.

A faint smile came to his lips at the thought of Akira. Or Aki as he affectionately called him inside his mind, although Hiro would never dare to call him that out loud anytime soon. He wasn't sure what it was about him that made him special, it was a feeling he couldn't explain. Only time would give him the answers he sought and nothing could rush it but that was what Hiro preferred. He wouldn't trust a relationship that was built hastily, trust came over time. Returning to the present time, Hiro glanced over at Sophia as she whispered to him while Pax threw about laundry.

A grin came to his lips.

"Mm. I felt that way when I first came to your place during spring break." Hiro reminded her.

"It's not that bad now. I'm used to it." He teased and nudged the girl with his elbow. When she spoke about her own summer traditions, Hiro listened quietly and daydreamed about what his own could have been like if he'd been born a girl. Or if his parents had wanted a son. As Sophia spoke about summer camp and games, Hiro looked over at Pax, curious. Right, they'd said they were planning some of the camp. "Games are always fun. What are you in charge of there?" He asked, wondering what Pax had come up with. Summer camp was bound to be fun.

"I'm running a capture-the-flag styled game," Pax would announce proudly in response to Hiro's question. It had taken a fair amount of planning and organisational skills (not all of which Pax had), but they had managed to find a way to make it work.

"But it's going to be pirate-themed, and on water. I hope people will enjoy it, it took a heck of a long time to plan."

The conversation quietened for a brief moment as nobody spoke, before Pax took it upon themselves to talk to Hiro. After all, they hadn't known each other for too long, only meeting once at the Blossom Ball.

"So, why'd you ask to come? I didn't have you down as particularly fond of me, at least not to the extent to wanting to come and stay over at my house," they admitted bluntly.

It wasn't a well-hidden secret that Pax and Hiro were not the closest of friends. It seemed Pax had done something (or maybe a variety of things, they weren't too sure) that had annoyed Hiro in the past to make them dislike Pax, which they had no clue what it was. But they just got a vibe Hiro wasn't the most keen to spend time with them, so it remained a question to them as to why he had chosen to come.

A call from downstairs diverted Pax's attention. "Oh, looks like dinner's ready. Come on, let's go eat."
OOC note- this is where I plan to leave the thread. You're welcome to do one more post with Hiro or just leave it, I don't mind. Sorry it took me so long to get back round to it.

Hiro nodded at Pax's words.

It seemed as if they had put a lot of work into this particular game and seemed to take pride in the event.

"I'm looking forward to it. You seem to have put a lot of thought and detail into creating the game. Have you done it before, or will this be your first time?" Hiro asked, curious. When Pax bluntly asked him why he'd come, although getting part of it wrong in the process, Hiro shrugged his shoulders. "Red wanted me to." It was a simple response. But it was the truth. It wasn't so much that he'd wanted to come, it was just that he hadn't wanted to turn down Red's plea for him to come with her to Pax's.

A sigh escaped his lips. "...I don't hate you. But I don't particularly like you either..." Hiro added. "However, you're one of Red's closest friends. So I thought maybe we might try and get a little closer over the summer. For Red's sake." Hiro regarded Pax, wondering how they would respond to his words. But before that could happen, a call was heard from downstairs, calling them down for dinner. "Ooo food. One of my favorite things!" Hiro said with a grin, as he followed Pax out of their bedroom.

Time to eat.

Those were words he always loved to hear as one of the best things in life was eating delicious food!
