Transfiguration!
Backdate: Thursday, September 2nd, 2021 | Time: 1PM
It was a few minutes before 1:00PM and Kim strode up to one of the empty rectangular tables to take a seat at one of them. There was room for up to three students to sit at one table but it was obviously meant for only two. The tables were pretty close together though, so it would be easy enough to talk to someone at a neighboring table should the need arise. Transfiguration was a class that he'd been looking forward to learning more about for awhile.
It was supposed to be one of the most complex and dangerous magic that a person could learn. After all, there was so much that could potentially go wrong, even if you were an experienced witch or wizard. There were partial transformations that could be harmful if cast upon a living creature. Kim knew of quite a few people who had accidentally done this and he wondered if it would also happen to him. For a child of Sato, Kim had a lot of determination.
He wouldn't fail.
Instead he would be successful and prove he belonged to the Sato family.
So far, the first two classes he'd been in seemed pretty interesting, and he couldn't wait to see what the rest of them would be like. Well, other than a certain class that was swiftly approaching, even though he didn't want it to. Could he perhaps report to the hospital wing and pretend he was sick to avoid participating in it? Kim was definitely considering the option. In fact, he was becoming a bit ill just thinking about it. He seriously couldn't attend.
How long could one avoid going to a class without getting into trouble?
Maybe just once.
If he didn't go the first day, maybe they'd let the other students practice on their own. Which in turn meant he'd be alone with the teacher and the others wouldn't get to see him freak out.
Kim wished Transfiguration class would never end, because not only was the subject matter interesting but he could work on it all day and never get bored. Or so he thought. Maybe it was just because he knew what happened AFTER the class was over and didn't want to face it. A sigh escaped his lips and he reached up to rub his forehead, trying to figure out how he was going to do this next class. He knew he should go. But at the same time, he didn't want to go.
He idly wondered if he'd see any of the people he'd met yesterday on the train. There had been a lot of them, mostly girls, and he'd seen them all get sorted into their Houses at the ceremony in the Great Hall. A lot of them had been sorted into Hufflepuff and Ravenclaw, which surprised him. Back in the old days his parents had told him that Gryffindor and Slytherin had been the top dogs. But it didn't seem that way anymore. Honestly, Kim didn't really care much about Houses, as long as the events at Hogwarts didn't discriminate between Houses.
But even then, he was sure he could probably sneak into wherever or whatever it was.
Ah, hopefully this class would never start.
Because if it never started, it would never end and the next class wouldn't start. Damn, what was he going to do... be a good student and face his fear, or be a bad student and avoid it?

Transfiguration!
Sophia was panting heavily as she roughly pushed the door to what she hoped was the Transfiguration classroom open with her shoulder. It was heavier than a door should be, but that seemed to be the standard in this place.
Heavy doors. Suits of armor. Statues. Magical moving portraits of people that should have been dead. It was a crazy experience, but the sensory overload was numbing her to it all.
She had a stack of books, including Book of Spells, Hogwarts, A History, and her herbology and potions textbooks, balanced in her arms, but they were dangerously close to tumbling.
As if that wasn’t bad enough, on top of all the books was a bit of parchment - Sophia really missed paper - and a quill and inkwell set - she also missed pens. The inkwell was on the very edge of the stack, but it was miraculously stable so far.
Appearance-wise, Sophia was no better off. The dress shirt and skirt weren’t too terribly bad. Years of dressing up and attending mass as a kid helped her to grow accustomed to skirts and formal shirts.
The cloak, however was a totally different story. She kept stepping on the edge of it and, being as clumsy as she was, stumbling around, nearly losing her supplies as she explored the castle in search of her classrooms.
And the tie. Oh Lord, the tie. It was lazily draped on her shoulders and she couldn’t for the life of her figure out how to tie it. Growing up in the United States, where uniforms weren’t the norm, she never learned the skills needed. She tried guessing at how to tie it at first, but all she’d managed to do was to choke herself briefly in the dorm.
As a finishing touch, her face was framed by messy hair falling out of a sloppy ponytail and bags drooped under her bloodshot eyes.
All in all, Sophia was a mess.
She scanned the classroom, hoping for a familiar face because, in spite of her exhaustion and flustered appearance, she was so very excited and she was bursting with the desire to share some of her joy.
Spotting a familiar figure seated alone at a table, Sophia called out loudly and bouncingly ran over to him.
“KIM! KIM” she shouted as she approached the table. Upon arrival, she dropped her stack of supplies onto the table and wiped the sweat from her forehead. They weren’t that heavy, but she was exhausted from lack of sleep, so that didn’t help.
“You’re not gonna believe this,” she rambled, speaking far louder and more quickly than she should have been, “I was reading ahead in the textbooks and there are wizards that can turn into animals! Like, they actually become dogs and cats and rabbits and owls! I wonder if we’re gonna get to learn to-“
Oh. Wait. She hadn’t even said ‘hello’ just yet. She noticed a few students’ eyes on her and lowered her voice with a blush.
“Sorry, Kim! Hello!” she said before getting a good look at his pensive appearance, “Are you okay?”

Transfiguration!
Transfiguration, one of the subjects that she's looking forward to. Head full of thoughts. Hoping that she'll like her transformation.
I want to be a cat
I want to be a raven too if that's possible
If not, then I'll stick on being a cat
Ariella was busy sketching on her sketchbook, jotting down notes and to do lists so she'll keep herself busy inside the library for the vacant schedules, not minding the sound of buzzing and mumbling students inside the transfiguration room. She was fully concentrated in drawing her cat, Solar, until a panting red head girl who looks like a first year student like her.
"KIM! KIM!" The latter shouted making Ariella turn around to look for the source of the noise.
Hey, I think I saw these students yesterday in the Hogwarts Express. Ariella knows them but didn't initiate to socialize due to the fact that her shyness got the best of her.
If I only know how to socialize properly, then I wouldn't be alone right now. She said to herself frustratingly as she went back to focusing on her sketchbook. In her grade school days, she's always alone, scared to talk and to socialize. This became an issue to her teachers and parents. But she believes that one day she'll overcome this anxiety she's experiencing.

Transfiguration!
Sage trickled in with the last of the students, rosy-cheeked and slightly out of breath, wisps of ash-brown hair plastered across her forehead.
She had known they would have to shuffle from one class to another, but wasn’t this a bit of a stretch for a typical homeschooler? Barely a day since they arrived and it was already off to the races. Certainly, the scrawny brunette felt quite out of her depth, but she managed somehow - it’ll just take time getting used to. Better stamina, too, apparently.
Now, a place to hunker down and catch a moment’s respite.
“KIM! KIM”
Sage recognized the voice instantly, relieved that she didn’t have to go through the mental gymnastics called ‘seating arrangements’. A sharp-looking Kim sat at a table with a somewhat-disheveled Sophia next to him. She chuckled to herself, feeling more at ease now with the presence of her travelling companions from the day before - Sophia’s excitable, awkward nature and Kim’s self-possessed demeanor. Thank Merlin for those two.
“Afternoon, Sophia. Kim.” The semblance of familiarity brought her some much needed encouragement to get through the day.
Sage sat across from the pair, setting her books on the table next to a girl with delicate features.
“Oh, hello. Don’t mind me.”
Leaning back in her chair, Sage pulled at her collar to loosen it slightly. She let herself take in her surroundings and amidst the sheaves of parchment, tomes and quills, she kind of understood why her parents liked learning so much. There was just something satisfying about stuffing your head with facts, gaining skills and applying them to everyday life.
“Are you not feeling well, Kim?”

Sophia was so happy that she could cry. Not only was she sharing this class - which seemed really difficult based on the textbook - with Kim, but Sage was there too.
Sophia had been so worried that she wouldn’t really see her new friends when they were sorted as Gryffindors and she was to be a Ravenclaw, but she was, thankfully, wrong. Now she was sharing a class with both of her friends!
As the reddened Sage walked toward them - Sophia was glad she wasn’t the only one affected by the castle’s size and the sheer amount of distance they needed to cover just to get to class - Sophia realized that she hadn’t even noticed the third presence at their table.
It was another Gryffindor! Maybe it was Kim’s friend? Sage didn’t seem to know her. Sophia felt awful for not even noticing her, but her fixation on Kim was admittedly strong when she walked in.
She muttered a ‘hey’ and a ‘hi, I’m Sophia,’ to Sage and the new girl respectively, but maintained her attention to Kim.
He was a bit standoffish at their first meeting, but he was confident, so for anything to rattle him, it had to be bad. Even Sage had noticed something was wrong, and she just got here.
She watched the, in her opinion, adorable Gryffindor with an attentive stare.

Kim was so caught up in his thoughts that he didn't take notice of the people currently streaming into the room. Not until he heard a familiar voice call out his name. And a flustered looking, disheveled and excitable girl rushed over and plopped down beside him at his table. It only took him a few seconds to realize he'd met her back on the train. What had her name been? It had started with an S. Ah, right. Sophia Nelson.
She dropped her supplies and books on top of the desk and instantly started going on a rampage about wizards being able to turn into animals. Kim smirked. Sophia really didn't know anything about this world, did she? "There's a specific term for that actually, they are called Animagus." He told her and raised a brow when she abruptly stopped talking mid-sentence. That surprised him and he tilted his head a bit.
What was wrong?
Ah, she was worried about her manners, how cute.
Kim didn't care if other people were staring at them, it was a classroom so naturally people would do so, but it seemed Sophia felt self-conscious.
He understood the feeling, he tended to feel that way if there were too many people around him. As long as they kept their distance from him, he usually was fine. But if they got too close, or made physical contact, that was when he freaked out. Kim nodded at her greeting and gave one of his own by merely raising his hand into the air and nodding at her. But he blinked when Sophia asked if he was alright. Did it show?
Before he had time to respond, Sage burst into the room with the last of the students. It looked as if she'd made it just in time. As she came up to them and took a seat at the table next to them, Kim looked over at her. Ah, the other girl he'd met before on the train! The boy's eyes flickered over to the other girl at the table Sage had chosen to sit at. She had brown eyes & black hair and was a Gryffindor, probably a 1st year too.
He nodded when Sage greeted them.
But he made a face when she asked the same question Sophia had asked earlier.
Okay, he'd made up his mind.
He wasn't going to attend the first day of flying class.
The last thing he needed was for the entire class to bear witness to his meltdown.
And yes, Kim was 100% sure he would have a meltdown the first time he tried to ride a broom. It just wasn't possible to not have one, unless they weren't going to fly farther than a foot off the ground. But that was highly unlikely, considering where they were. "Mm. I don't feel that well, so I'll probably take a trip to the hospital wing after this class is over." He told them, not about to tell them the real reason.
He cleared his throat, trying to divert some attention off himself and looked back over at the three girls. They had some time before the teacher started the class and although he didn't like small talk, he didn't want them to focus on his obvious nervousness. If they realized it was nerves and not an actual sickness, would they become even more curious? Well, he had to make sure that didn't happen at any cost.
If they simply thought it was a stomach bug or headache, that would be better.
"So what do you guys think about the place?" Kim asked, actually kind of curious about their impressions. One was a muggle-born and the other was a half-blood.
Their impressions must be different from purebloods.

Transfiguration!
It didn’t seem like class would start anytime soon; no professorial flourish of the cape could be glimpsed just yet and the hushed chatter of expectant first-years had grown into a din.
The girl surreptitiously watched her classmates, trying to put names to faces and only getting them right half the time - it was somewhat easier to recognise them through their house colors if they happened to wear them. Naturally, those striking in appearance or whose peculiarities stood out from the mob of black robes that milled about the Castle - it made remembering them less of a headache.
Perhaps, it was why she’d bee-lined straight towards Kim and Sophia; like night and day, the pair couldn’t be more different from each other.
Speaking of contrasts, Sage was honestly surprised to see the boy sorted in Gryffindor. Someone of his bearing always seemed to end up in Slytherin - at least from what she’d seen at the Sort, and what her folks had told her about the four houses. Still, any Lion was a comrade of hers, regardless of their background. Sophie, despite her shyness, was a shoo-in for Ravenclaw; and even now, her inquisitive nature burst forth like a spring.
And what of herself? It was both disappointing and reassuring to have been sorted in a different house from her older brother, Gus, a seventh-year Ravenclaw. Where the burden of expectation used to sit on her shoulders, somewhat displaced now, there also existed a desire to set herself apart. She couldn’t deny the warmth her fellow housemates had shown her. Mum had been right about it feeling like a second family; if communal living didn't make you closer in the seven years together, Sage didn't know what would.
“Animagus?” The term was familiar, like she’d heard it somewhere but hadn’t bothered looking it up. From Sophia’s description, they were wizards who could change into animal forms. It sounded like it would require a deep understanding of the complex rules that governed Transfiguration.
“Did you have any of the pumpkin pie yesterday? It's a bit too runny for my liking; good thing I’ve only had a bite.” said Sage in reply to Kim, though he’d fired off a question of his own.
“It’s grand… and old, like, in a good way. And sentient to some degree. Makes you wonder what ancient magic is at work, yeah?" Sage scrunched up her nose, unable to fully explain her fascination.
"Oh, and the staircases, I reckon they'll take some getting used to."

Sophia animatedly leaned forward onto the desk.
“OH MY GOD, the staircases!” she agreed loudly, pausing when she realized her verbal blunder. She blushed and crossed herself fervently. Father Lamb would tease her relentlessly over that slip up if he were here. Then again, if he were here, he’d probably be unhappy about the actual witches. Sophia inwardly laughed at the thought.
She continued in conspiratorial whisper, “I’m uncomfortable with heights, and did you know that Ravenclaw students have to live in a tower? You know, the ones we saw on the boat ride last night? With the battlements and pointed roofs? Those towers!”
Her face was a mix of embarrassment of the previous night and dread for tonight. With a nervous chuckle, she asked, “Do Gryffindors sleep in a tower, too? Bet it wouldn’t bother you guys. Gryffindor: home of the courageous and all that, right?”
She didn’t mind being a ‘muggle-born’, as everyone seemed to call her, but she wouldn’t mind some of the familiarity that came with growing up around magic and castles and things like that.
Sage seemed so calm and dignified, and Kim seemed confident and cunning. Sophia would love to be more like them.

──────KIM─SATO──────────────────────────────────────────
──────────────────────────────────── HOGWARTS ──────────
| ── | The class wasn't scheduled to begin for another five minutes, so they had a few more minutes to talk amongst themselves. All over the room, students dressed in black robes with their House colors could be seen. But that was to be expected, as it was against the rules to wear anything other than your school robes during class time. Kim hadn't been that surprised to find himself sorted into Gryffindor House.
But he had to admit, he'd wanted the Hat to place him in Slytherin. Mainly because he'd known he belonged to either Slytherin or Gryffindor, due to the fact that his parents came from both Houses. But he wanted to be placed in Slytherin for a particular reason. Kim's desire was to follow in his father's footsteps as much as he could and that included the older wizard's House. Honestly, Kim felt kind of guilty. Guilty that he wouldn't be able to do the things his father had done back in his days at Hogwarts. The worst part was that he never knew why Kim couldn't do this. Kim couldn't bring himself to tell him. Being placed in Gryffindor was a bit crushing but at the same time, it was his mother's old House, so at least she would be happy about it. Kim hadn't really told them what House he'd been sorted into as of yet. He wondered if they had found out already. A sigh escaped his lips. Sage brought him out of his depression and Kim thought about what she'd said. "Mm. It's when a witch or wizard can transform themselves from human to animal form at will. But they can only do it with one animal and there's some sort of condition I think. From what I remember, it's a learned skill you're taught during your third year of Transfiguration." Kim told the girl. "Other than that, I'd have to do some research to find out more." Kim had definitely prepared for his first year at Hogwarts. With his boundless curiosity and thirst for learning and knowledge, he'd asked his parents, the caretaker and servants, his friends and acquaintances back at home and had done some research on his own as well. No wonder he knew a lot about Hogwarts and what to expect. But some things he could never prepare himself for. Even if he knew beforehand, it was one thing to know about it in theory. It was another to actually experience it in person. Such as the moving and ever-changing staircases. Kim really didn't want to be caught on one of those, especially if it ended up dropping him into a deep chaos. He shuddered at the mere thought of being high up and falling into who knows where. Sage seemed to also be thinking about this, as the girl mentioned the staircases being something different. In other words, something she'd have to get used to. Well, it wasn't just her. Sophia suddenly complained about the staircases too, albeit a lot louder than them. She appeared to realize her mistake as a few students glanced over in her direction, wondering what the outburst had been about. But they looked away, once it was obvious it had nothing to do with the class. As Sophia lowered her voice and spoke about being uncomfortable with heights, Kim blinked looking over at her. That was too close to home for him. When she asked about Gryffindor, he abruptly nodded. "Gryffindor is not in a tower, it's located on the 5th floor of the Castle. But it's called Gryffindor Tower, even though it isn't really a tower." Kim explained. He strategically left out the part about whether or not heights bothered him. And now it was time to turn the conversation away from heights and towers!!! Right. "I only had the custard tart, I'm kind of partial to custard tarts. I only try pumpkin pie during Halloween." Kim told Sage, turning back to her. "If you're looking for a good dessert, I highly recommend that one. But the chocolate desserts are to die for of course. You can't go wrong with chocolate." It was the truth. Chocolate desserts, chocolate candy, chocolate treats, anything having to do with chocolate was delicious. Although milk and dark were much better than white in his opinion. They tasted so rich and bitter to him!! The perfect combination. Still, those chocolate skeletons, which in his mind should have been called chocolate skulls, had been hard to resist. He'd given in at the end and gotten one. |

Transfiguration!
When Sophia agreed vehemently, Sage let out a chortle. Glad she wasn’t the only one exasperated with the stairs.
“It’s rather moody, don’t you think? I never know which floor it’ll connect to.” While aware of its existence beforehand, Sage had never thought she’d have a battle of wills with a flight of stairs. It would move at whim, not going where she wanted it to, or pull away from a landing just as she was getting off. Great, she’ll just have to live with the fact that a staircase was trying to kill her!
“Most days I try not to look down, or just have a firm hand on the banister.” Most days. Sage wasn’t as bothered about heights, but the possibility of falling to her death was a notion she’d rather not entertain.
“Ravenclaws definitely have the best view of all houses.” Sage nodded, making a note to explore that part of the Castle. A short tour earlier in the day had informed her that the Owlery was within vicinity, as well; she’ll have to write home one of these days.
The brunette quirked a smile.
“Right. We’re not as high up as you guys are.” Their tower-that-isn’t-a-tower didn’t have as stunning a view as Ravenclaw’s but it sure beats being stuck in the Dungeons any day.
“I’m weak against chocolate, it’s too irresistible.” Sage had to remember the time she almost dozed off in the train yesterday. The instantaneous crash after the sugar spike might’ve just been due to the lull of the train, though. She also recalled Sophia’s piteous expression as she contemplated devouring the wriggly chocolate frog; what a funny and cute reaction.
“Anyway,” the girl turned to Kim, cocking her head to the side. “You never did say what you thought of the place. Was it everything you expected?”
A light bulb switched on in Sage’s brain, not quite registering the subtle change in topic.
“You seem to know much about Hogwarts, Kim. Surely, you have some tips on how to get around on those stairs?”
