The lizard isn't listening and the lizard doesn't care. (Seth)

It was weekend and the day was still early, and first year Marius Brown could not wait to start his Saturday. He had worked hard last night, finishing all his homework assignments which was due the following week just so he could have two full days to relax and unwind. It paid, the boy felt highly energised this morning.

Getting dressed, he headed to the Great Hall for breakfast. He took a glass of warm cocoa, mixed it with some fresh milk, and grabbed some buttered toast. Bite, sip, bite again: not so fast though, he wanted to enjoy his meal, not rush through it as if having breakfast was some kind of obligation.

As he took a few bites of his toast, Marius' brain organised a plan. He could go out and have fun on the grounds, or he could head to Professor Proulx's area in hopes he would be allowed to pet a couple of the kept animals. There was actually a third option he considered - heading to the library to get some story books - but Marius was more of an outdoor person and spending his Saturday reading seemed like a waste of day, no matter how interesting the stuff he read was.

With his head still in the clouds, the Chinese-English boy continued his breakfast, the toast surely was getting cold and his cocoa only half-drunk. He would not even glance at the cocoa had it not because of a sticky something that landed on his cheek - the Hufflepuff stopped drinking and lowered his goblet - a lizard was struggling to get out of the cocoa.

Shocked, Marius screamed and automatically threw the goblet away. It landed on the floor, cocoa spilling all over. He did not even want to see where the lizard was now or what it was doing.

It was a rare occasion that Nicholas brought George down from the Gryffindor common room. For the most part, the little lizard was more than content to sleep his day away in his terrarium, having gorged himself on crickets and basking in the heat provided by the enchantments that lay on his enclosure. But, it was a Saturday, and a Saturday on which Nicholas had for once not forced his teammates to endure cold and wind racing lap after lap around the outdoor club area. Under those circumstances, and feeling the need to give the reptile some semblance of adventure, he’d brought George with him to breakfast.

He’d been overly protective of the critter since it had been attacked within mere moments of having been adopted, and he barely ever allowed for the bearded dragon to wander from his sight. Still, when there was food involved, Nicholas was more than wont to get distracted. He’d wandered into the great hall with all the ceremony of a dead man, crumpled at one of the tables, not bothering to ascertain which house it normally belonged to, and began chowing down on pieces of bacon and hash brown within seconds of sitting. Once he’d eaten his share of greasy food, bits of scrambled egg were heaped onto his plate, and George was awarded a few pieces of that as a treat.

The lizard, who had been placed upon the table itself, ate the egg with as much vigour as his owner did. Both boy and reptile all but attacked the food, gorging themselves on protein. Yet, when the eggs were finished, Nicholas turned his attention away from his pet and to getting a drink.

Tea was poured, a dash of milk added, and then a more than generous heaping of sugar. With the warm beverage in hand, he relaxed into his chair, content to let the food settle. For a moment or so, he actually found his head empty, not in the way that it normally was, empty of anything but his fixations, but an actual moment of peace. Perhaps, he could use the day to relax. Perhaps, he could see about wandering the castle grounds like he had during his first year, that would be nice.

The shriek of another boy took Nicholas out of those pleasant thoughts. Instinctively, he pushed his chair back, and had to fight to keep his tea from spilling. Bits of burning liquid splashed against his hands, and he all but slammed the drink down on the table, his attention turning to where the sound had come from. A goblet had been thrown, liquid strewn across the floor around it, cocoa Nicholas thought absently.

But, it was the orange shape in the pool of cocoa that caught his attention. Nicholas’s head whipped from observing the spill to where George had sat upon his table. The lizard was gone. Eyes returned to the orange shape, the orange creature, on the floor, its movements unmistakable. George.

“What in the bloody hell!?” The yell was leaving Nicholas’s thoughts before he could think straight.

Then he was running to the lizard, scooping him up and holding him gently in his hands. He wasn’t injured, thank God, but he was rather sticky and evidently surprised. As surprised as a lizard, particularly one as unintelligent as George, could be.

“What did you just do to George!?” He demanded of the boy, a first year who he did not know.

All he knew was that he’d obviously done something, George was on the ground, he’d screamed, there was cocoa. It was a peculiar puzzle, but he didn’t need to piece it together to be furious.

All Nicholas could see was red.

Marius was still in a shocked state when a black-haired boy came striding toward him - no, toward the goblet he had just thrown away to the floor, and gently picked up the lizard. The older boy was furious and demanded Marius to tell him what he Hufflepuff had just done to George, which drove the first year to conclude that George was the name of this lizard and he belonged to the furious boy.

His brain, however, was clouded by his emotion; seeing the boy angry only made Marius angry as well. Why, he had been a victim and here came someone who accused him guilty.

"I didn't do anything!" he said, or perhaps half-shouted, trying to remain calm so as not to snap at the other boy. The Hufflepuff might have sounded like crooks in films, who almost always denied their guilt when they were caught by police officers or heroes, but what else could he say? "I was sitting quietly, drinking my cocoa, and George was the one who decided to turn my drink into his swimming pool."

Just then, it began to dawn on Marius that he had gulped something contaminated - not that he wanted to say lizards were disgusting, but surely they did not take shower daily and they put on no shoes on their feet as they crawled wherever they pleased. That thought alone was enough to churn his stomach, and Marius felt he may be sick.

Due to her very nature, Sophia hated conflict of any kind. If there was ever an argument, a fight, or any kind of social friction, she had a strong tendency to pray hard that it didn't involve her, even a little.

On this particular Saturday, she was relaxing and enjoying her breakfast as she enjoyed being lost in a book she had borrowed from the library. She wasn't much of a reader before coming to Hogwarts, but after seeing the library, she could hardly resist at least dipping her toes in the massive amounts of literature. Unfortunately, today she was out of luck. A few shouts pulled her from her little escape into the world of mystery within the book she was reading.

Normally she would just completely ignore any shenanigans that took place in the Great Hall, but today the participants of said shenanigans were being particularly loud, and she was struggling to even hear herself think due to a threatening headache. She shut her eyes tightly, closed the book she was reading and stood, walking to the two bickering students, a Hufflepuff and a Gryffindor.

She knelt and picked up the goblet, placing it gently on the table. Holding up her hands placatingly, she suggested meekly, "Come on, you guys, can't we all get along? This seems like a misunderstanding."

She looked between the two boys and hoped for some sort of understanding between them.

What was Nicholas supposed to do? Be reasonable? That absolutely would not do, not in the slightest. His lizard had been sent sprawling, and although George certainly seemed unhurt, it was a transgression he could not easily allow to pass. So his posture became one of two natures, the protective way in which he cradled the animal juxtaposed against the ferocity of his stance. One hand held the bearded dragon to his chest, cradling it like a babe, whilst the other clenched into a fist, the pressure of his grip turning his knuckles to white.

“Why would he go swimming in a cup of cocoa?” Incredulity coloured Nicholas’s voice as he answered the younger boy’s lame excuse.

Not that it was lame in truth, had Nicholas taken even a moment to process what was going on, he’d likely comprehend the scene before him. The lizard laying in a puddle of cocoa demonstrated that he’d likely been thrown with the liquid, and it wasn’t as if the average person was wont to place an animal in their drink. Yet, he did not take that moment.

And his frustration only deepened further when another student butted in. Nicholas turned his attention toward the newcomer, a redheaded girl, another nameless face that he did not recognise. Still, even with that lack of recognition, Nicholas did not hesitate to turn his frustration away from the boy and toward her.

“Stay out of it,” He spat, “He threw my bloody lizard, I’m not here to get along.”

An unfair diatribe for both the first years, how absolutely charming.

Sophia's eyes widened at the harsh response of the - how had she not noticed before? - older wizard. With a slight sqeak, she shifted slightly to stand behind the boy with whom she was now sharing a tongue lashing from the other boy with the lizard.

She certainly wasn't scared of the second year. No, definitely not. She was a witch in her own right. She couldn't afford to be afraid of something as harmless as a fellow student, right? There were rules against attacking each other anyway.

No, she was simply standing meekly behind the other student - who seemed to be a first year - in order to help facilitate communications. If she stood behind him, it gave her a better chance to minimalize conflict and to help ensure a peaceful resolution to the whole situation.

Well, that and she was a tiny bit scared, but she would never admit it.

She stood still, trying to look as small as possible behind the offender in the Great Lizard Tossing Kerfuffle and hoped that the older boy's anger could be redirected toward the other target if she remained well hidden.

Not risking a word out of her own mouth, Sophia watched the brown-haired boy expectantly, hoping for some kind of defense and began to regret butting in. She really should have minded her own business. What had gotten into her?

A pretty redhead came over, trying to break the two boys' argument, but the lizard's owner did not take this advice. And neither did Marius. He really did not like having his mistake pointed out, or in this case, it was not even his wrongdoing. The lizard volunteered to approach him; or his cocoa (whichever one preferred to say).

Unlike the second year, though, Marius did not snap at the girl. He did not even pay sufficient attention to her; he merely turned his head a little when she approached them, noticed that she suggested the two to put their argument aside, and focused his attention back to the kid he was arguing with.

This black-haired student demanded an explanation why his lizard George would swim in a cup of cocoa, still in a tone of accusing the Hufflepuff, and Marius decided to be cheeky at him. "Oh, I dunno," the first year replied, definitely not politely, "but maybe George has heard about spa trends. You know, bathing in not only flowers but sometimes also chocolate, or wine, or sake. Or does he even know this thing better than you?"

He said all of these knowing very well this might heat the other boy's anger even higher, but he did not care. Would the second year hit him, slap him, or push him to the floor? Would he throw something at the Hufflepuff, or start a physical fight with him? Whatever he was about to do, Marius could not care less about it; the lizard owner would always be in the wrong as long as the first year did not physically attack him back.

Nicholas’s glare could cut through steel, the frustration fueled in no small part by the idea that the younger boy was probably right. Why would the first year put the lizard into his own cup of cocoa? It was a rather foolish notion. But Nicholas had taken to arguing, and the other boy had answered in turn. The interjection of the redheaded girl had, of course, not helped him with his temper. He felt as if under siege, and that meant that he had to take steps as if to fight to defend himself. Whether those steps were unnecessary or too much was beside the point, Nicholas’s intention was to argue, even if he was becoming increasingly aware that the foundation of his arguments was shaky at best.

“Why would a lizard want a spa?” He retorted, the point of the question deliberately avoided, “What would he bloody well want with a day of pampering?”

Speaking of pampering, the second year raised the rather sticky lizard up, examining the reptile to ensure he wasn’t injured. Fortunately, he wasn’t, the throw barely seemed to have phased him. For once, Nicholas was glad that his pet was about as intelligent as a bag of rocks. At least he was cute.

“Just stay away from my pet, yeah?” He shot the rhetorical question hiding the insult at the other boy, “Both of you.” His gaze and venom returned to encompass the girl as well.

Perhaps if he wasn’t cradling the bearded dragon, he'd want to start a physical altercation. But as it was, his desire rested solely on ensuring that he wouldn’t endanger the creature further. That meant raised voices and poorly-considered threats.

Juni was used to drama and arguing around her. For one, she was in the chaos most of the time. Another thing? This was Hogwarts. A school full of emotionally damaged teens and preteens. She didn't bat an eye even when she heard the high pitch scream that emitted from the other side of the hall. Instead she casually reached across Sophia Nelson for the biscuits. "long time no see, Sophia. How's life?" She had met the Ravenclaw while assisting a fellow firstie with a fallen bookshelf in the common room. The girl wasn't remotely close to being as outgoing as Juniper, but her presence was still enjoyable and so Juniper striked up a conversation. With bare hands, she ripped open her biscuit before searching for her knife. "pass the jam, if you don't mind." She held her hand out as a boy passed her what she had asked for and she smiled in thanks. With her knife, she scooped a giant glob of grape jam and smoothed it onto her now crumbling biscuit. "what do you reckon that was all about?" She asked, waving her hand in the direction of the scream.

She turned her head to where the sound was coming from and eventually got up to walk to the scene. From the looks of it, some kid had injured another's lizard. At the sound of the screeching, her ferret popped her head out from Juniper s pocket to survey the scene. When she saw nothing of interest she closed her eyes and pulled her head back in to Juni's pocket. Juniper shoved a couple of students over and sat cross legged on the bench so she could have a front row view of the drama.

The more heated it got, the more excited she became. Soon, she had her hand in a fist as she saw the two get close."Fight! Fight! Fight!" She shifted her legs so she was sitting on her feet, crouched. Her face fell as the older one began to turn and she threw her hands up. "c'mon! He just tried to drown your lizard! You're just gonna let him get away with it?!!" then she directed her finger to the other boy. "and you! You can't just let an older student bully you around like that!" She was trying to fuel the fire, she wanted some action.

Sophia gasped sharply at Juniper's encouragement. All hope of a peaceful confrontation was quickly slipping away, and maybe it was because she was an only child and didn't get to grow accustomed to roughhousing, or maybe it was because she was a bit shorter than others her age, but she wanted no part of it. Being caught in the middle of a fight was dangerous, and it could get her in trouble.

She shifted from behind the Hufflepuff first year and made her way closer to Juniper. At least this was someone she knew and someone - she hoped - could at least keep the escalating situation away from her.

If she assessed the situation logically, she would have put more stock in the fact that Juniper was the one to encourage the fight, but as it was she just wanted to get some distance from the storm before it began.

"Uh oh," she whispered to Juniper," that boy really seems to take his lizard seriously."

She watched the second year holding his lizard comfortingly. Honestly, if it wasn't a lizard, Sophia might even consider it to be an act of primping. Was primping something lizards could do or was it a term specifically reserved for birds or people? No matter. The fact of the matter was that this boy really loved his lizard, and she began to fear for the fellow first year who was caught in the older boy's sights.

"It's gonna be a bloodbath," she mused fearfully.
