A brisk wind passed through the grounds of Hogwarts, aiding the falling snow as it continued its mission to cover the Scottish countryside. Avery bounced on the balls of her feet as she stood upon her podium, bundled up and half frozen as she watched the spectators who were willing to brave the cold make their way to the cleared off stands. The Hufflepuff captain blew warm air into her hands, continuing her small movements to try and generate some warmth while they waited.

Shifting to look over towards the starting line, she does a quick count of the racers who were already starting to get settled into their places. As the last of the stragglers take up their positions, Avery steps up fully onto the podium to address crowd and racer alike. "Welcome everyone to our 2nd Winter broom race of the day! If you were at the match earlier, I hope you enjoyed yourselves and managed to get warm in between! We've got another thrilling match up lined up!"

Turning back towards the racers, she addresses them directly. "Alright, racers. You all know the rules! Keep it respectful, but don't be afraid to get physical. First team to cross the finish line takes the match." Shifting in place, the Hufflepuff raises a gloved hand into the air as the tension rises. "Best of luck to all of you! On your mark...GO!"

"OWOOOOOOOOOO!!!!"

Colin ran full speed through the falling snow and the brisk and invigorating Scottish wind down to the starting lines! He'd spent the morning cheering on AngelFyre as her team fought valiantly against the recently defeated Ravenclaw team. Colin smiled excitedly! Recently defeated by Slytherin! he amended proudly. Surely he was drunk on his team's singular win in all Hogwarts broom racing history, but that was just part of the game! He knew all the Basilisks had tasted victory, and they liked the savour of it!

"Oi! Colin!" A voice from up in the stands floated down softly on the wind. It was surely more of a shout high up! Colin scanned the stands for friendly faces. Liam was there naturally, and AngelFyre. Quite a few Slytherins turned out as well. They would do their best to give their House a second victory --- or die trying! He caught sight of a couple familiar first years. Would be quidditch player @Avery Gray and fellow snake @Claire Lewis. Colin jumped up and down and waved enthusiastically. Clearly, the latter came prepared for an Antarctic expedition. Claire looked more like black snowball all bundled up in her cloaks and scarfs! He scanned the crowd again. He found himself looking for Emily's face among the spectators. Colin blinked and shook his head to clear his mind.

But now was time for some serious talk!

As the racers were lining up, Colin walked over close to the Gryffindor team. It was now tradition for Colin to greet the Gryffindork captain. It used to be Xailah who he greeted in this fashion, but now the lions' captain was the beautiful and fierce Della Barfield! Colin stopped before her and gave her a smile, showing off all his fangs, then presented her with a graceful bow with a sweep of his racing cloak.

"You're going down, Barfield! All of you!" Colin narrowed his bright green eyes. "I'll visit you lot in hospital wing later!"

"Rai!" he nodded. He'd raced with her before! She was good!

"Piérre! Morituros vos saluto! ^{1} " Colin made a flourish with his bow, giving Piérre a bright smile. Colin loved the trouble making Gryffindor, and just knew this was going to be a fun race, regardless of who won!

It was cold. However, the lack of warmth was made up for with an excess of optimism from a particularly excitable redhead. She was ready to get more than two points, and better than last place, this time! Maybe, Astra thought as she tugged on gloves and goggles, they would have another party once they won, and this time there would be no exploding toilets or whatever the hell happened at this past rager.

Friend @Píerre Marchonné and cousin @Raizel Voltrouz were among her opponents this race. Astra scampered over before the race started, Albany in tow. "I'll catch up with you two at the hospital once we win," she assured, patting them each on the shoulder. "Have fun, don't die!" And then it was time so she hopped up on Albany and glided over to her starting position, drawing up her neck gaiter to cover her nose and mouth. It was going to be cold, but spectacular.

Calming Presence in Effect
Team Gryffindor, Figaro, & Avery Affected

Defeat and lime wasn't an unfamiliar taste in his mouth by now, but after a while one certainly started to wish they had a margarita or something just to balance out the sting and pucker of the lime overall. No matter where he seemed to go, the boy's rotten luck just seemed to follow and infect every sport that he ever dared to put his hand to. First there had been Quidditch with most of his original and most beloved teammates having disbanded and therefore no longer held much of an interest to himself thereafter, then it was dueling in which he found out the very hard way that he simply was not cut out for the sport at higher levels due to his own... ahm... insecurities and intensities concerning real life combative scenarios, and now here at Broom Racing where it seemed that his very presence had become like a jinx to that of his other teammates at least when it came to facing off against Hufflepuff in both instances.

Well they were now up against the Basilisks who were probably feeling all warm and fuzzy after their most recent--and for that matter their first--win against another house team, that of Ravenclaw (which itself, mind you, was undergoing a great deal of new racers so perhaps there was a bit of an explanation in that to be found somewhere). Chances were that Slytherin was going to try to run with the momentum they had found in the fall and carry it forward here and now into the wintertime races in an attempt to snowplow Gryffindor into the gorgeous powdery piles that were grooved and shaped by the whims of the wild winds.

While he had dressed warm, he had also dressed slick, and he was slightly shivering in his racing suit. It was only going to get worse from here, he knew, so he had been trying to keep himself moving while the rest of the final preparations for racetime were being made. Among the Slytherin competitors were a couple familiar faces--famous wolf-man Colin and of course firebranded Tyche. As he shivered to himself, holding Orabella in the crook of his arm as he rubbed and rubbed his shoulders to invoke friction heat (Figaro wasn't allowed in this sort of weather, he would be watching from the Gryffindor tower in the nice and cozy warmth of the Niffler Nook), his ears--nipped by cold--piqued as Colin invoked a Latin phrase that his linguistic attunement towards Italian easily translated.

A cheeky smile began to spread, albeit uncertainly. Haha... yeah... were it not for the fact that he had been getting more than a few uncomfortable omens in his Divination classes and historically over the past year he may have chuckled aloud. As it was, he waggled a finger at the Scotsboy, as if to impishly chide him. "Il sentim-mento è reciproc-c-co!" He chattered back, flashing a thumbs up. "The sentiment is mutual! Let's see who dies better then, shall we?" The brightness of one of his eyes was for a minute snuffed out as he offered a wink with it. Snow was beginning to frost his hair, leaving it pale on the places where light usually touched so as to render it winter-touched instead. Only the pinkness in his cheeks whipped by wind and the red percolating in his ears gave testament to the fact that he was still alive--that, and the puffs of white vapour from laboured breathing in the lung-freezing weather.

Astra hurried over, and Piérre gave her a jerky nod in note. She would pat him on the shoulder whilst offering a few sporting words belaying her confidence in her team, to which Piérre snorted and shook his head. "Hey look... o-once is an accident. You'll have to do it tw-wice in order to prove anything might be going o-on." He gave her a cheeky side-eye. "And w-we're not going to let ourselves inherit your little jinx... We're busy with our own right n-now." Grimacing, he subtly indicated to himself with a lazy loop of his hand around his face. "I sw-wear I'm c-cursed. And I am surely not going to that Death Wing if I can help it--you know that."

Another grimace.

Cordialities had to be cut short as the race was about to begin. As always, Piérre felt that he was more than prepared to fly... but there was always that little nagging seed of doubt that liked to rest itself deeply in his stomach. Perhaps it would have been better if he simply had never gotten out of bed. It would have been warmer, anyhow.

Green and brassy gold goggles were pulled over his eyes--snow began to fall on the lenses. He was going to turn into a Piérrecicle by end of this race, and if he didn't... then surely that meant he had done something wrong along the way in not racing as hard as he could so that those mach 10 winds would freeze the very liquid in his blood.

Description: Marvelous Spatuletails are medium sized hummingbirds, averaging between the lengths of 10-15 cm (if including the male's spatules) and weighing 5 grams (because even for hummingbirds that 'bulk up' for the purpose of migration no hummingbird exceeds 30 grams due to their necessity to be lightweight for flight and high metabolism). Its body is described as being 'about the size of a fluffy ping-pong ball'. Its plumage is usually white and green on its underbelly, and bronzy on top. Males possess blue crest feathers, a turquoise throat patch, and a black line cutting down a white chest and abdomen, whose side feathers are green. Its call is of a high melodic frequency described as "a repeated high-pitched buzzy metallic note...'tzzz...tzzz...' during its aerial display". Its calls include "an upslurred high-pitched sweet note 'tswee'" and "a more strident 'tsik'".

The most distinguishing feature of the male marvellous spatuletails are of course his spatules; two outermost tail feathers which are long, raquet-shaped, and possess indigo or violet-blue discs (spatules) capable of being flicked about independently. These feathers are not fully developed in juveniles, but they can grow up to three or four times the length of the bird's own body.

In this currently aged Animagus form (16 years old as of 2024), Piérre would be a petite 5 cm long (not including his juvenile tail feathers--as he is a male--which adds only an additional 9 cm), and a near weightless 4g.

Distinctive Markings:

Unlike the typical blue crest and violet spatules of a mundane Marvellous Spatuletail, the spatules and crest color of Mr. Marchonné's animagus form instead carry a structural coloration that varies all over the spectrum; resulting in his color being of all chromatic hues dependent on the way the light hits his feathers (in such a way that while he possesses the Marvellous Spatuletail body, he also expresses the Fiery Throated Hummingbird's various iridescent colorations).

The head crest feathers of Mr. Marchonné's animagus form are slightly longer than an average Marvellous Spatuletail's and they seem to possess a slight curl like his human hair. This results in the formation of what can only be described as an ahoge of feathers that curls forwards over its head as if aiming towards the bill.

Wyatt knew that the Basilisks' winning one game changed everything. Maybe not for the best. The first omen was that flood during their celebration, but the next was more of an idea. Wyatt knew the expectations of them were greater now. Now that they proved they could win, they had to prove they could do it again. He cracked his neck as he mounted his broom. Colin's pregame tactic was trash talking the other team, but Wyatt didn't want to test his luck. He pulled his goggles on and sighed, determined yet weary.

The time since her last race had been, in short, amazing. The broom racing team was no longer the mockery of the house, of the school. The rager had been epic (until Aamon came along and ruined things) and the connection between her teammates and her had only strengthened.

She arrived on the course, trusted broom in hand and eyes peeled toward the stands, where she quickly spotted the Hufflepuff. It was no shock that badger had come to support the team, after her time with Colin and Ava. She offered a wave to the spectators, although she really meant it for Emily.

Coming to her team, Ava offered a smile to all of them. To Colin she leaned over to whisper to him. "Em’s watching, gotta show her the good things in racing."

How this will go, that she doesn't know but hopefully, it won't be a repeat of the last race. They almost won, but that wasn't on their side and to make things worse, there was a time when she could've helped in grabbing that sweet victory for them yet she failed. Raizel had been feeling bad about it for days, and couldn't let go of the time her magic failed her when it mattered the most. It took a while before she began to accept it, before she stopped beating herself up because of it and there are still times when she just remembers it and would ponder about it for hours. Defeats, one after another, she was starting to feel so sick of the bitter taste lingering in her mouth for too long. Her duels, unofficial and official ones and now, broom racing.

“Do better.” She uttered with a tone of frustration, her brows furrowed, hands clenched tightly. That's right, do better, her performance last time was pathetic. That was all she could see, her failures, not even taking a glance at the small victories that she had managed to do like being able to survive in the track and disarming Dorion Anderson who was in a higher year than her. When she felt a tap on her shoulder, she turned to face them, seeing her cousin there. She mustered all the energy she had to show her a smile, a forced one as always. “Yeah, I’ll see you after but it'll be our victory.” Big words coming from someone who couldn't even get one win. Then again, she can keep hoping to have a sweet taste of it and to finally replace the bitterness. Maybe then that’ll prove that she could break her fate of being a failure.

Raizel also gave Colin a small wave when he addressed her before joining the rest of the other Gryffindor racers. “Don't be such a disappointment this time.” Those words were only meant for her, a way to push herself forward although it might seem a bit harsh. She had always been hard on herself and that won't ever change until she gets the results that she seeks. She fixed up her goggles before taking her place at the starting line.

Rockin' new paint job? Fuck yeaaaaah!

The fall broom race had done a number on ol' DB, marring the Silver Arrow with chips a scratches from the Devil's Snare it had gotten tangled in. While it's racer had little to show for the struggle Gryffindor Team endured during the last quarter of the race prior, DB's cherry red frame had plenty a story to tell in it's split paint. It wasn't anything a new coat of lacquer couldn't fix. Shame the same couldn't be said for some of the Gryffindor egos.

Martyr's broom hadn't been the only thing to make it out of the race with a couple scars, and some went more than surface deep. Hufflepuff's win by- reportedly- a literal hair had left a bitter taste in a few Gryffindor mouths. Maybe some of that residual resentment would help fuel their success this race.

The punkish lioness couldn't say she ever cared much for winter, but at least the snow was fun. Crouching at the starting line Martyr swept her hands together to gather a pile of snow that she packed firm, forming an icy ball enmeshed with twigs and small pebbles, roughly the size of a fist. Raizel caught her eye as she straightened, noting the older girl looked slightly more miserable than usual. Martyr watched her exchange with one of the Slytherin members before hopping closer to the brunette, her thick boots meeting the snow-crusted earth with dull thuds. "Yo Raizenator!" Marty beamed. "What's shakin'? Ready to squash some snakes?" The snowball she had made jumped from hand to hand; it's dance put to a stop only when her right hand reeled behind her head, preparing for a throw. "Whaddya think, think I can nail the Slytherin captain in the head?"

A yawn escaped Vale's mouth as she floated along to the starting line. She can't seem to grow used to being awake during day light hours, instead enjoying the darkness midnight would always bring. It was something she was used to handling when she was younger during her father's 'meeting hours' and nightly parties to sell his potions.

Now she was here, forced to be wide awake as a 'responsible witch.' At least it was to watch her very enemies suffer.

She moved forward, getting comfortable on her broom as she rolled up to the start.

"Basilisks! Our next mortal enemies are the lions! Allow them to know the same horrors the birds have experienced themselves! No survivors! Today is the day the lions go extinct!" Vale twisted a smile, her sharp nails tightly gripping the wood of her broom.

That's right. No survivors.
