2023, Stage 3 Gryffindor vs Ravenclaw: Match 10

She couldn’t climb to her feet in this condition, so she began her escape with the forceful twitch of a finger to stimulate her nervous system. With her brows furrowing in a deep struggle—which seemingly inspired the rest of her facial muscles to liven too—full control of her body returned, albeit sluggish. Phaedra stood; things weren’t looking great at all, but perhaps she could still maintain her dignity through consciousness and being able to walk herself off of the piste.

Time was running thin, and everyone knew it. The Gryffindors wisely chose to play it safe, shy away from grand spells that could explode in their faces and just work on patching over the bumps Pierre had taken. It was calm, and their opponent had returned to her feet, but she was still blindfolded, not much of a threat.

Phaedra knew this, too. And with so little time to untie the knot to try to throw together some last-minute offensive, she likewise retreated to healing spells and maintaining what dignity she could in the face of looming defeat.

Hanging low above them, dark clouds continued to rumble ominously, pressing in like a curtain falling over a stage. A quick glance proved that the time was trickling down. Any final displays of offensive strategy to attempt to tilt the scale in favour of one house or the other would have to be done swiftly with brutal efficiency. But there seemed to be little fight left. Between those yet standing, Phaedra remained blinded by the cloth about her face, and Pierre had seen better days. Once again, Evelynn, alone, remained unmarried, but even she could feel the tension slowly draining from the white-knuckled hold upon her wand. By the skin of their teeth and a healthy dose of luck and lack thereof, the cubs had managed to hold their own.

"What do you say we conclude the match here?" Evelynn inquired tentatively when all three of them elected to patch up injury and lick wounds. By all appearances, it looked as though there was a general acceptance of the outcome. She figured the offer was worth a shot, at the very least. If she didn't have to inflict more pain upon her peers, that would be her preference; and had this been a game of chess, the feathered king would have been tipped over. But this wasn't chess. Not even wizard's chess, and she would be foolish to let down her guard. She might have hoped for one answer, but she readied herself for quite another.

A trio of healing charms, though one was different, were incanted at the same moment. Two of them, thankfully enough, was for Piérre himself; the one that he had cast and the one that Eevee had cast on him. "Reparifors!" Though he was by no means at the top of his game again, he was feeling pretty good again; the worst of the electrical burn was beginning to fade away, and even the bumps and bruises from the breathtaking Flipendo he had suffered earlier was curbing away. He was still a little bit itchy around the eyes, but at least that was easier to remedy in both magical and mundane means. He could handle that part of the nursing himself if he had to.

Yet, the Ravenclaw girl was still blindfolded; for what reason Piérre could not divine even if he had studied Divination for many many years... Was this an acceptance of fate or an attempt to maintain dignity and walk away from the duel metaphorically without a scratch?

Well, Piérre could respect that, he guessed. But there was still one round left with which to do work in, and he couldn't slack now if he could help it. "I'd be cool with that." Piérre smiled at Eevee with only a little uncertainty. "But only if she's okay with it too. If she wants to go down fighting, then let's give her a fight, hey?" He nodded to the Ravenclaw (obviously forgetting that she could not see him through her blindfold) and then unconsciously fumbled his wand before snatching it again before it could hit the ground.

Ready to cast, ready to do whatever it was that this last round held for them, Piérre waited and watched for his chance to act.

The healing spell hadn't been nearly as strong as Phaedra had intended, almost as if some greater influence responsible for her actions had grown forgetful. And on her end, all those blows to the head from Petrificus Totalus hadn't been much help either. Ah, well. Win some, lose some; and next time, she wouldn't let a little friendly fire throw her team's prospects all away.

And with a nearly equally calm bout of healing spells--Evelynn's did spark wrong, leaving Pierre with the brief sensation of stinging before his own spell washed over it--the time clicked to a close. One eye on the falling action, one on the timer, Bridget was quick to call, "Stop!" as soon as it ended.

Her job of determination was pretty easy today. Phaedra admittedly looked at nearly full strength, minus the strip of fabric that stuck to her face through the end, but so was Evelynn, and Gryffindor's careful efforts had nursed Pierre back to reasonable vitality. Thus, a rather clear decision: "Gryffindor takes the victory!"

"Well fought, all of you," she added in a less-projected voice. "Remember to stop by the healers if you need it, and congratulations on another season of duelling completed." It may not have ended as all of them would have liked it to--after all, there had to be a loser for every winner--but at the very least they could look back and see how much they'd improved.
A WIN FOR GRYFFINDOR!

There was a short little sting that was quickly overshadowed by the familiar cast of the healing spell of "Reparifors!" that Piérre had quite literally cast 3 times in a row in short order. Well, at least he was getting consistency out of it, if nothing else but boredom and likely somewhat letting down those in the audience who had been anticipating shed blood from the two sides.

A peaceful ending to a tumultuous fight. Perhaps that was the most poetic justice of them all. After the storm comes a silence, and in that silence there was nothing left to say.

Even as their moderator stepped forward to announce the winners, Piérre was already crossing the stage to the upperclassman Ravenclaw with intrigue in his green eyes as he went. A little taller than himself was she (a three inch difference, to be exact), but it wasn't that difficult for the careful fingertips of the boy to hover a few inches around her crown; not touching, but simply waiting and letting her know of his presence before her before he quietly informed of something in a voice no louder than a murmur. "I am going to help you take the blindfold off. I will try not to touch you, but I will undo the knot."

After a beat to let the girl take in the facts of the situation, the hands of the soon-to-be graduate of the fourth year class began to gently ply the knot at the back of her head until it started to easily unravel. It would have been so simple for her to simply take it off, and yet she hadn't for some reason. It was as if she had simply stopped fighting, had simply accepted that there would be no reason for her to see and to instead mitigate her losses... and her pride. Why had she stopped? Wasn't it so much more fun to keep holding on for dear life? To embrace every bump and bash as they reminded you that you were alive? To keep standing up after every petrification, especially if you knew that you were a worthy adversary. Piérre had not been a worthy adversary by far, he had been quite an unsatisfying one, and perhaps the girl knew it. But why not try to put him in his place for it, then? Wasn't that the point of dueling? Or, if not, then why did she duel?

As the blindfold fell away, Phaedra would likely see Piérre, shorter than her he was, curiously smiling up at her with seeming wonder in his green eyes. He had never seen this student before, had never interacted with her, knew nothing of her life... and she likely knew little if any of his own. Perhaps he was simply odd to her, perhaps he was simply another passing face... and that was all well and fine with the boy himself. Indeed, he totally expected that to be the case. "See? Much better." Nose crinkling a bit at the pun of his own design, Piérre noticed how people were starting to shift about and began thinking that now would be an excellent time for his own exit before everything got too crowded to handle. After all, his Figaro was still in the audience and was likely waiting to be reunited with his master.

Smile faltering, Piérre gingerly withdrew and glanced once more around him nervously. "I think you could have had us on the ropes more if you had taken the blindfold off..." He confessed, playing with the leafy yew wand rolling in both his hands. "Sometimes I don't know why I'm a duellist because I'm really bad at magic and don't really have the same oomph." His brows creased. "I wish... I wish I could do half the things that you're able to do."

Face paling suddenly, Piérre suddenly spun and then quickly dashed off into the crowd, ignoring any yelps or cries of surprise from those that had the misfortune of being in his and his familiar's way as they made a mad dash of an exit. If any dared to follow after, Piérre had seemingly vanished into thin air not to be seen again in the duelling club for the rest of the day.
