"Cheers, Raizel!" Astra greeted her cousin as she went slinging along the path only to graze another wall, earning her more scrapes and bruises. The lion racer who (subtle foreshadowing) Astra would knock off her broom later threw Raizel, sending her cousin soaring ahead.

Last race, she'd run into some pretty nasty stuff. Vampyr mosps, as she'd learned, were horrifying creatures. But nothing was as disgusting as getting a whole wad of bird dung right on her goggles. Oh God it was in her hair-

Well, speak and so it shall happen. Foreshadowing at its finest, and of course Murphey's Law making itself known to the fullest. Even as he tried to tame the broom beneath him for just long enough to make good to attempt to throw and be thrown, his hand reaching out for the first racer, Raizel his fellow unfortunate flier, a good kick from the gilded beauty sent him flying over the front of his broom, clinging on only by one hand but of course dragging the both of them across the permafrosted ground. Skidding to a stop, the boy felt the frozen earth on his cheek and the sheer, overwhelming sense of apathy running thick through him. Half-heartedly he called up to the remaining fliers. "I'm no good. Linda, get Rai!"

Alas, there was a lot more emotion behind that simple statement than one would likely be able to appreciate. A part of him didn't even feel like trying to peel himself off of the ground at this point. He was probably better off on the ground considering he was never going to be in the air long enough to actually go anywhere of particular worth. He hated that awful, familiar depressive feeling, but really... would it kill the universe to at least once let him feel like he was good at doing something other than being the brunt of its frustrations for the sake of its amusements?

It wasn't like he was even bad at flying, per say. He flew all the time, and he didn't even need a silly broom for it. He wasn't bad at casting spells, he wasn't bad at doing the drills that they did at practices repetition after repetition after repetition on end. In fact, he was quite good at them, especially since he just happened to be older and had an affinity for such hybrid practices.

He ground his own face into the dirt, hearing the other racers fly by overhead. After a beat, he proceeded to scream into the ground for about three seconds before shutting himself up and raising his head again. Was it really worth it to try to get on his broom again? Was it really worth it to be a bunch of deadwood for his own team? Taking off his goggles, he wiped red eyes with a gloved hand, smearing mud across his face as he tried to choke down the rising ball of a second scream in his chest. Gosh was it worth it to even be at this school anymore? Was it really worth it to try to put in any level of effort anymore considering that regardless of what he did nothing good seemed to come of it?

He would have to figure out his options at a later time, though. During a race was not the time for it. Did he love racing more than his intrusive thoughts liked to sink their teeth into him? Or was everything really just all for naught when it came to finally finding a place where he belonged in this infernal school-life thing?

Description: Marvelous Spatuletails are medium sized hummingbirds, averaging between the lengths of 10-15 cm (if including the male's spatules) and weighing 5 grams (because even for hummingbirds that 'bulk up' for the purpose of migration no hummingbird exceeds 30 grams due to their necessity to be lightweight for flight and high metabolism). Its body is described as being 'about the size of a fluffy ping-pong ball'. Its plumage is usually white and green on its underbelly, and bronzy on top. Males possess blue crest feathers, a turquoise throat patch, and a black line cutting down a white chest and abdomen, whose side feathers are green. Its call is of a high melodic frequency described as "a repeated high-pitched buzzy metallic note...'tzzz...tzzz...' during its aerial display". Its calls include "an upslurred high-pitched sweet note 'tswee'" and "a more strident 'tsik'".

The most distinguishing feature of the male marvellous spatuletails are of course his spatules; two outermost tail feathers which are long, raquet-shaped, and possess indigo or violet-blue discs (spatules) capable of being flicked about independently. These feathers are not fully developed in juveniles, but they can grow up to three or four times the length of the bird's own body.

In this currently aged Animagus form (16 years old as of 2024), Piérre would be a petite 5 cm long (not including his juvenile tail feathers--as he is a male--which adds only an additional 9 cm), and a near weightless 4g.

Distinctive Markings:

Unlike the typical blue crest and violet spatules of a mundane Marvellous Spatuletail, the spatules and crest color of Mr. Marchonné's animagus form instead carry a structural coloration that varies all over the spectrum; resulting in his color being of all chromatic hues dependent on the way the light hits his feathers (in such a way that while he possesses the Marvellous Spatuletail body, he also expresses the Fiery Throated Hummingbird's various iridescent colorations).

The head crest feathers of Mr. Marchonné's animagus form are slightly longer than an average Marvellous Spatuletail's and they seem to possess a slight curl like his human hair. This results in the formation of what can only be described as an ahoge of feathers that curls forwards over its head as if aiming towards the bill.

There was something about missing a blatch that was truly disappointing beyond tangible explanation. Hitting a moving target was tricky, but when that target was a stones throw away? Come on now, that is just downright embarrassing. Only failure awaited when Martyr swerved her broom to nick Slytherin's ferocious co-captain. She swung a hair short of her target; the only thing she'd be knocking off-kilter was her own flying. The dhampir's cheeks puffed out in an exasperated expression, gradually flaring red as they were emptied and refilled of air. Fine. It was fine. This was fine. She'd get the girl- maybe not this race, or the next one- but she'd make sure to make up for that missed blatch. One day.

In the meantime, Marty needed to keep her head in the game, especially since things were taking a sour turn for Gryffindor all of a sudden. A quick glance back an Martyr could see Piérre was off his broom with Linda on the ground too, a little further up. Raizel had the worst of this recent helping of bad luck, however. Ahead on the track was the vile picture of poor Raizel getting shotgunned in the face by a flock of pigeons. Martyr didn't think things could possibly get worse- until she felt her knees pop! in the wrong direction.

She'll get the lions, one way or another. She was an Ashwood for a reason. All enemies are guaranteed to perish under their gaze, one way or another.

There was something in the air during the race, something that’s probably causing Gryffindor to just have a streak of bad luck. Raizel can’t say for sure if they were lucky this time, maybe not due to how two of their racers were knocked off of their broom, Piérre, especially, catching her attention as someone whom she knows suffers from the same misfortunes as hers from what she knows at least. When he told Linda to do the Alley-oop instead as he was knocked off by his own spell, she can’t help but feel bad for him, hoping that things could get better for him soon, just as much as she wishes things could get better for her as well.

That must’ve been frustrating. She knows that feeling. Working hard yet when bad luck strikes, you have no choice but to succumb to it. The distant frustrated yell from the older boy reached her ears as she took Linda’s hand. “Oi! Get back in the race! It’s not over yet!” She shouted just before she was flung forward. Words of encouragement? Perhaps. She wasn’t good at that but she tried. She too was sick and tired of losing, of all these misfortunes so she understood if Piérre would be feeling so down about all of these but giving up? No! Just no. They can still struggle against their cruel fate, break free from their misfortunes. At least, that’s what she’s planning to do, continuing to fight against it. Piérre should do the same or that is what she believes in.

So when her own misfortune struck when those birds decided to do their business and with it covering her eyes, she shook that off. Blinded, disgusted, but still, she’s moving forward.

Not only that, but she was surrounded by friends on the course, who were well prepared and above all else, determined to prove the last race wasn’t a fluke.

She soared over the course, grinning as she resisted the urge to shout over the noise at their opponents.

Colin made the most of zooming through the various treacherous passageways at the beginning of the course. He tried some wiggles and some barrel rolls. He went for flat out speed! He risked a quick look back. With a slight shrug at the poor Gryffindorque lass who seemed to have been hexed into immobility, Colin bounced off the barriers that marked the narrower parts of the passageways.

"UFF!"

Only slightly out of control but maintaining speed, he bounced off the other side next!

"OOF!"

Colin zoomed by Piérre, calling out to the older Gryff as the lad stood on the ground, sorting out his own broom issues and leaving him in the proverbial dust! "WOOO!" Colin cheered. Once Vailerama decided to fly, he really tore through the air! Colin's sole goal now was to fly as fast he possibly could! If he survived, well, that would be so much the better! And if he didn't ... they could bury him under the Whomping Willow!

He could scarcely make out where his team mates were! Captain June was dead ahead, shedding pigeon poop and in desperate need of a good scourgify! "Smelling good, Jooooon!" he called out as he caught up and flew level with Linda, one of the Gryffs.
