𝕽uth has a medium, slender build, with a ‘disappointingly’ short stature that hinders her from a lot of things. However, she is light on her feet, and with the use of her height and build she is quick to slip through unnoticed, complementing her piercing forest-green eyes that are constantly on the watch. Her button nose and downturned lips might seem unremarkable at first, but neither of these are considered her distinguishing feature, with her glossy black hair outshining it all. Unfortunately, it is usually tied back in a messy braid— practical and out of the way —but when let loose, it cascades down her shoulders, revealing hazelnut-coloured tips from an unsuccessful dye experiment. When out of her school robes, Ruth opts for vintage clothing in autumn tones— such as knitted cardigans, corduroy skirts and worn leather boots. She claims them to give her an ‘understated confidence’, but it’s simply because her parents are just into the style.

Ruth’s keen eye and figure allowed for her to blend into the background, a skill that honed her ability to observe and develop a sharp eye for detail. This knack for reading people allowed her to avoid difficult social situations with caution, navigating her through unnecessary drama and possibly potential danger. However, when teased or ridiculed, Ruth isn’t afraid to stand up for herself and fight back, wielding her quick wit with ease. If the situation demands it, she won’t hesitate to use her fists, rewarding her with the nickname “Ruthless”, an ironic contrast to her last name, “Fairchild”.

Despite playing tough, Ruth prefers to stay under the radar, quietly working harder than her peers to ensure she doesn’t fall behind. Often, she does find herself lonely, which puts her humor and brutal honesty to good use. The two traits can either win her friends or leave her with none, depending on the day.

Sometimes, being invisible feels safer. Other times, it feels like I don’t exist at all.
🀨 𝑯𝒊𝒔𝒕𝒐𝒓𝒚 🀨
𝕽uth was born to a family with both parents as “muggles”. Little was said about her family tree and Ruth never did question it. Her life, at first, seemed ordinary. As the youngest in a family of three, she was constantly doted on by her parents’ affection and attention. But everything changed when, at the age of seven, her youngest brother was born. With a new baby in the house, the Fairchilds found themselves focused on caring for four children instead of just three, and Ruth’s place in the family subtly shifted, with the attention she had once owned now passed on to her baby brother. Her older siblings, who had gone through similar transitions and therefore related to her, became her primary companions. Together, they showed her how to navigate this new dynamic—whether it was sneaking out to the library with her eldest sister or bird watching with her older brother. As a result, Ruth grew into a quiet, somewhat reserved child who kept her emotions hidden. She learned early on to stay in the background, becoming adept at observing and adapting to her surroundings. Still, despite the new change, Ruth was happy with her life. She had siblings who kept her busy, and parents who took care of her better than some ever could. She was grateful for her life.

Eleanor Fairchild (1983)
Eleanor Fairchild is the mother of Ruth and the heart of the Fairchild family. With a warm inviting presence and natural elegance, she is able to draw people in, winning the heart of Elias Fairchild nineteen years back. Her shoulder-length black hair is styled in soft waves, framing her face and complementing her serene brown eyes inherited by her youngest son, Ace. She is everything a man would want her to be back in the 1900s, with a smile that radiates love and quiet wisdom.

Elias Fairchild (1983)
Elias Fairchild is the father of Ruth and the backbone of the family, exuding an air of quiet strength and warmth. Tall and broad-shouldered, he carries himself with calm authority. Like Eleanor, his forest-green eyes (which most of his children inherited, much to his amusement) are sharp when he needs to be stern and hint at his wisdom. Forever loving his dear wife and four children, he carries an antique pocket watch in his coat, a gift from Eleanor when they had Rita.

Aaron Fairchild (2010)
Aaron Fairchild is the second oldest child in the Fairchild family and is an older brother of Ruth’s. Lanky but almost as tall as their father, his build hints at someone who hasn’t fully grown into himself yet. Still, that doesn’t stop him from being a professional at bird-watching, a hobby that he shares with Ruth. This often results in his black hair tousled and unkempt, constantly earning chides and chuckles from his parents.

Rita Fairchild (2008)
Rita is the eldest sibling of the family and Ruth’s favourite (but only) older sister. Standing taller than Ruth, her elegant posture passed down from her mother reflects her natural leadership within the family. Just like the rest of her loved ones, her forest-green eyes gleam of wisdom, a result of spending countless days sneaking out to the library with Ruth, earning her the title of role model as she teaches Ruth how to blend into the surroundings and sneak around.

Ace Fairchild is the youngest of the Fairchild Family and Ruth’s little brother. The smallest and most energetic, he’s often seen with a cheeky smile, constantly exploring everything with his big curious brown eyes. Despite being the baby of the family, Ace is bold, adventurous, and an almost-exact copy of his older brother, Aaron. He spends most of the time following Ruth around and Ruth lets him, giving way to the irresistibly adorable look.

𝓗er first instance of magic had been when she was nine, on a lovely Saturday afternoon. Her parents were out, and so were the two older siblings. Thus, Ruth was left to look after her younger brother, who was just four at that time. Unsure of what to do, since Ruth had little to no knowledge of babysitting, she decided to let him play with her old ‘girl toys’— dolls and plastic jewelry that Ruth hadn’t brought herself to discard. She watched as her little brother picked up a comb, probably admiring the rhinestones decorating the shell, and started combing his short, unruly locks. Finding it ridiculously funny, Ruth couldn’t help but giggle at the sight. In an instance, she watched as his hair started growing, no longer short. Afraid to be caught in this situation, Ruth panicked and swiftly cut his hair (somewhat) back to how it was, getting rid of the locks as quickly as possible. When the rest of the family came back home, they found the two siblings unscathed and fine. Ruth managed to escape suspicion that day, but while the magic was harmless, she was left with a feeling of unease. The discovery of her mana felt more like a burden than a blessing. So, when the letter from Hogwarts arrived, Ruth felt an overwhelming sense of relief. For the first time, she could look forward to learning how to control her magic—and perhaps, for the first time in her life, to feel like she belonged somewhere.

Life has been called many things—dreams, stories, even a person handing out lemons. Everyone has their own metaphor for its meaning, and Ruth Fairchild is no exception. For her, life is “the art of creating autumn.” Each year, she says, could be “raking the leaves”—a season of hard work—or “jumping into the pile”—the celebration of a milestone reached.

Ruth’s seven years at Hogwarts mark a turning point in her life, a journey that will shape her forever. For this chapter, she calls it “the seven ingredients to crafting the perfect hot cocoa—her way.”

𝑯𝒆𝒂𝒕 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝑴𝒊𝒍𝒌

Milk in hot cocoa is like comfort and nostalgia— it’s the heart of the drink, creating a creamy rich base that would balance the boldness of the dark chocolates and warmth of spices. The milk must be warmed to create the foundation for a comforting drink, just as Ruth is thrust into a new, unfamiliar environment and adapting to it. The process of this is gentle yet essential, allowing Ruth prepare and awaken her potential.

Ruth and Ira have two similar facts. One, they both love the Great Lake and the solitude it provides. Two, they’re both friends with Pamela Graham. Disappointingly, these similarities cause misunderstandings and tension that are…currently being worked on. Overall, Ruth believes that Ira’s just misunderstood. Or is she really mean?
