Sorting Ceremony

1st September 2024 - 30th June 2025
September 1st 2024 would mark the arrival of a fresh generation of wizards. This is also the day older students return to an oh so familiar scene. This story is of course not for the older students. They had already been here... done that. The Sorting Ceremony is a tradition that has remained unchanged for generations. There was still excitement too be found in ceremony and routine. who among the throng of fresh-faced, wide-eyed children would share their dormitory, their house, their tables?
These first years were about to embark on a novel journey. For those with a magical family; older brothers, parents or even friends, they might know what this gathering was all about. For others, specifically the muggle-borns, this might be a more stressful day as their 'normal' muggle life is finally truly over and the world that they are now a part of is entirely unlike their own. At this sorting ceremony each new student with the help of the sorting hat would be placed in one of four Houses -- Hufflepuff, Slytherin, Ravenclaw or Gryffindor.
Hufflepuff for the loyal and the hard-working.
Slytherin for the cunning and ambitious.
Ravenclaw for the studious and the clever.
Gryffindor the the prideful and the brave.
Slytherin for the cunning and ambitious.
Ravenclaw for the studious and the clever.
Gryffindor the the prideful and the brave.
As they say, the Sorting Hat is never wrong and while for some the Sorting Hat may pick a House that is unwanted or unexpected, it simply means that the House saw something in you that you failed to see within yourself. In the years that would surely follow, you will learn about yourself, make friends, enemies, and rivals. You might have seen yourself as bookish, ambitious, brave or kind, but became so much more given time and opportunity.
The room itself was grand. Four long dining tables stretched the length of the room with benches on either side. As it always was on the first day -- it was standing room only. A feast was laid out family-style down the center of each of the four tables, the children would gorge themselves on every sort of food one could think of in the shared space. Goblets full of cheery, fruity drinks and large, full plates of hearty dishes sat in front of each student. The walls were lined with massive living portraits that chatted among themselves and with some of the more curious students. Overhead lit candles hovered, illuminating the great space and the high vaulted ceiling above. It was loud, the roar of conversation as well as the excitement and anticipation of many of the students as they waited and they wondered where they were going to be sorted. Many had a preference, one that the hat often, but not always, honored. Many came back exuberant, but there were a few that would slink back to the crowd after they were sorted astonished or even dismayed that they were placed in the house that they were.Out of Character Note: The sorting ceremony that you enjoyed is a weight-based algorithm that chose your house based on the answers you have chosen. This is not randomly assigned. We hope you took care in picking your answers because this is the House that you will be in for the next several years while you attend this school!
To reiterate, despite it being mentioned in the welcoming letter I feel it is important to say once again: we do not allow players to re-attempt the sorting ceremony, nor do we forcibly sort players into their desired houses. An unexpected house can serve as a great tool for character development. Please utilize the unexpected outcome to your fullest ability.
Solomon Lear, the Headmaster was there. He was a curious, unexpected figure for most. He met most of the students at the door as they entered the Great Hall although there was always a wily one that would slip past. Somewhat imposing, standing a bit over six foot, six foot - two inches to be exact and wearing armor. The armor was a strange characteristic of the grey haired wizard with a full beard and dark, stormy eyes - heavy metal plate wrapped in an embossed leather that while definitely worn with evidence of repair and appeared to be well cared for. He was more pleasant than he would appear on first impression, his expression certainly not stern, his words for the most part the common platitudes one would expect from a Headmaster laced with the occasional dad-joke. However there was something about his features that suggested illness or disability. While he appeared fuller about his cheeks and his armor appeared to fit him snugly, he had this sickly pallor that would remain unexplained. He was alert, interactive and friendly but he was not animated or vibrant, his blue eyes appeared dead and his gaze distant. This was for the most part pomp and circumstance, a ritual to start the school year as it always had, one could not waver from what was tradition. At his side or at least nearby, always a Head of House but they appeared to rotate their presence near the Headmaster. Those with a keen eye might notice that the older man had a slight limp.
Once the students were all inside, the doors would close behind the last student as if on its own. Solomon would quietly make his way to the front of the room, this awkward period of time as he traversed the length of the hall. His movement for the most part demanding without requesting silence. With the assistance of the Amplifying Charm his voice boomed. "Welcome first year students. I am Solomon Lear, Headmaster of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. As it is our tradition here we are going to engage in our first ceremony known as the sorting ceremony. The sorting hat has been a part of our school's tradition since the time of Godric Gryffindor, one of this institution's founding wizards. This hat is very much sentient."
Sentient, I am intelligent
A voice chimed in from... It did not come from the Headmaster nor did it come from any of the other Professors that elected to participate in this year's sorting ceremony. None of the Professors seemed even remotely surprised although one rolled their eyes a bit, they made the same joke every year it seemed. In the hands of one of the Professors, a pointed witches hat that was tattered and worn moved about on its own accord. Yes, the voice came from the hat itself.
Solomon let out a bit of a cough, as if he was making sure that the hat was going to let him continue to speak. "Ah yes, the intelligent" he eyed the hat. They had done this exchange before, it was nice having a sense of normalcy once again. A shame that the hat had not come up with a new joke in the past year but he had not come up with a new speech either. The hat was in a lot of ways similar to Headmaster Lear, making things appear as normal as possible which was never easy, a farce in the best of circumstances. Headmaster Lear gave a slight smile to the sorting hat and said in a low voice that the study body could not overhear. Neither of us are terribly funny anymore I say. Which is fine, they will pretend to laugh anyways. During the school year, the Sorting Hat spent the rest of the year in the Headmaster's Office. Renovated the summer of 2019 with better security than before, there had been a restless peace the past year as they both kept to themselves.
"Sorting Hat will be placed upon your head. It won't hurt one bit. The Sorting Hat will look into your heart and mind and determine the best place for you: Gryffindor, Slytherin, Ravenclaw, and Hufflepuff. As most of you must know, each of those houses possesses their own characteristic, their own values and their own Head of House." He would gesture towards the present four Heads of House and the Deputy Headmistress and announce each of their names in order before continuing his instruction. "The house that will be chosen for you shall represent qualities that are truly present within each of you. Your future house shall be like a second family. You will also be able to gather points and once we reach the end of the year, the house with the most house points shall win the House Championship Cup. What you need to know is the Sorting Hat is never wrong, once you are sorted your House will not change for the duration of your time in Hogwarts."
Solomon would pull a scroll from his waist and open the tightly bound parchment. The list was long this year, even longer than last year. There was a bit of nervousness within him as the long scroll hit the floor, one end still in his hand and rolled several feet away. There were names, so many names. This was going to take awhile he thought to himself. It was as if the list got longer and longer every single year, the wizard baby boom was not over yet.Out of Character Note: You should have a letter from your Head of House upon completing the sorting ceremony that gives you some basic information regarding where to go and where to start. If you have any questions or concerns, they are a great resource, please use them.
As if on queue, the Sorting Hat would be placed on a small stool and would start moving and singing:
The Sorting Hat then sang his song :
" A thousand years or more ago
When I was newly sewn,
There lived four wizards of
Whose names are still well known:
Bold Gryffindor, from wild moor,
Fair Ravenclaw, from glen,
Sweet Hufflepuff, from valley broad,
Shrewd Slytherin, from fen.
When I was newly sewn,
There lived four wizards of
Whose names are still well known:
Bold Gryffindor, from wild moor,
Fair Ravenclaw, from glen,
Sweet Hufflepuff, from valley broad,
Shrewd Slytherin, from fen.
For were their such friends anywhere
As Slytherin and Gryffindor.
Unless it was the second pair
Of Hufflepuff and Ravenclaw.
As Slytherin and Gryffindor.
Unless it was the second pair
Of Hufflepuff and Ravenclaw.
United by a common goal,
They had the selfsame yearning
To make the world's best magic school
And pass along their learning.
They had the selfsame yearning
To make the world's best magic school
And pass along their learning.
Now each of these four founders
Formed their own house, for each
Did value different virtues
In the ones, they had to teach.
Formed their own house, for each
Did value different virtues
In the ones, they had to teach.
While still alive they did divide
Their favorites from the throng,
Yet how to pick the worthy ones
When were they dead and gone?
Twas Gryffindor who found the way,
He whipped me off his head
The founders put some brains in me
So I could choose instead!
Now slip me snug about your ears,
I've never yet been wrong,
I'll have a look inside your mind
And tell where you belong!
Their favorites from the throng,
Yet how to pick the worthy ones
When were they dead and gone?
Twas Gryffindor who found the way,
He whipped me off his head
The founders put some brains in me
So I could choose instead!
Now slip me snug about your ears,
I've never yet been wrong,
I'll have a look inside your mind
And tell where you belong!
You might belong in Gryffindor,
Where dwell the brave at heart,
Their daring, nerve, and chivalry
Set Gryffindors apart;
You might belong in Hufflepuff,
Where they are just and loyal,
Those patient Hufflepuffs are true
And unafraid of toil;
Or yet in wise old Ravenclaw,
If you've got a ready mind,
Where those of wit and learning,
Will always find their kind;
Or perhaps in Slytherin
You'll make your real friends,
Those cunning folks use any means
To achieve their ends. "

Once the Sorting Hat was done, most of the students applauded the sorting hat. It was technically the Deputy Headmistress' duty to grow hoarse listing off all of the names. He had tried to pawn the role of Deputy Headmaster off on one of his Heads of House in 2018, all of them ridiculously competent and smart enough to say "no." Eventually @Hjørdis Jensen, better known as "Nora" would be conned convinced (typos are truly a terrible thing) to accept the mantle. Solomon sometimes wondered if he was even needed as Headmaster. They had managed the school admirably in his absence during 2019. Never the less, the old armored man would start to recite each name on the list and one by one the students would be summoned to the front of the room where the Sorting Hat would be placed on their head. It was time to start their journey.
This is a RPG topic where all new first year students are welcome to post.
All RPG rules apply. Word count per post is 200 words of your own work, not including quotes, ooc chat or other people's words. Any flood type (posts under 200 words) of message will be deleted after a warning owl is sent. If you are having a hard time meeting the 200 word count expectation try to be descriptive: How was the trip here? How are you feeling? Are you hoping for a certain house, if so why?
Very minor god-modding is allowed here because there are hundreds of you and only one of me. Please be respectful of this fact and keep most of your post about you. You know that my character called your name, they might give you a kind smile and a word of encouragement but in character he is also seeing hundreds of students in a single day. He would not be spending a lot of time on a single student, this ceremony goes on for hours. As for the sorting hat, again please respect the cannon. The sorting hat would see something in you, they would not decide because you are someone they 'especially hate' for instance that they would place you in the 'wrong house.' Think about what traits you do have that make you a suitable fit for the house you got and have the hat give that as a delivery for instance. Or if you cannot think of anything, the hat never tells you their reasoning as they declare your house.
We have a Prefect Staff that moderates this forum and this thread in particular. If you have any questions, feel free to reach out to a Prefect or other staff member.
There is something about ambition, how it not only propels you but also defines you.

Sorting Ceremony
Hogwarts had already impressed him, but he knew it would because of the stories his big brother Patrick and his big sister Tess had told him about the castle and the world surrounding it. Ronan had a weird feeling in his stomach after the magical boat ride up to Hogwarts; the ship, propelled by unseen forces, glided smoothly through the water, the moonlight reflecting off its surface in a mesmerising dance. He had experienced seasickness before, but not in this way; maybe his excitement and nervousness had gotten the better of him. The first-years were now standing in front of the door leading into the Great Hall; Ronan tried to remain focused, as he tended to get quite nervous around big gatherings, but he knew that he had to be brave for both himself and his family's honour, besides he didn't want to embarrass his big brother and sister who were already sitting inside the great hall.Date - 1th of September 2024
Suddenly, the door opened, and the first years entered, glowing candles flying high above the ground, below the Enchanted Ceiling, a perfect replica of the night sky, complete with twinkling stars and the night sky. Even the weather, which Ronan didn't quite believe when his big sister Tess told him about it, but then again, Tess was indeed a Ravenclaw with wit. She had even told him where she knew about the magical ceiling inside the great hall, the nerve; he thought to himself as he remembered her telling him about it. Ronan hated it when she came back to Hogwarts during the holiday breaks because she would always brag on and on about all that she learned at Hogwarts in the spring, summer, autumn, and even winter around Christmas.
As the first year was walking through the tables, the sorting hat, a magical artefact that would determine which house each student would belong to, he looked in front of him, towards the teacher's table, as he wanted to be sure that they didn't look like trolls or goblins. A few days before his departure to Hogwarts, Ronan had dreamed about walking into the great hall with the other first years. Still, instead of getting sorted, they all got captured by trolls and goblins, creatures that were often depicted as fearsome and dangerous in magical stories. And they even sorted him into Ravenclaw all of all houses, a house known for its wit and intelligence, but not for its bravery, which Ronan felt he had. He yearned to be in Gryffindor, like his big brother Patrick, a house known for its courage and loyalty, traits Ronan admired and aspired to.
Ronan had thought about which house he would belong in long and hard for a while. Still, he knew he wanted to be like his big brother Patrick, a Gryffindor, brave and never afraid to stand up for his little brother against their mother, Angelina, when she was angry with him for not paying enough attention to what she was saying. ''Ronan Ward,'' a loud voice suddenly said which was the Deputy Headmistress standing beside the stool, still holding the sorting hat in their hand. Straight away, Ronan fixed his posture as he looked straight up at the hat, trying to imagine the sorting hat saying Gryffindor before it had even gotten on his head. Ronan tried to remain calm and relaxed; it didn't last long before he looked down. There were only two steps, but he did not want to fall in front of everyone at Hogwarts.
He glanced at the teacher as he sat down and looked straight ahead, waiting for the moment to come; maybe this wasn't so...'' AHHHH! Another Ward, hmm...Where should I put you, brave at heart but talented and witted? But where should I put you? Maybe Ravenclaw?'' Ronan shook his head immediately; luckily, the sorting hat stayed on his head, and Ronan answered the sorting hat immediately, quite confident ''Anything else but Ravenclaw.'' It took a second before the sorting hat found a reply to his remark ''Hmm..but you're also loyal towards a friend, perhaps Hufflepuff?'' Ronan thought that he would rather eat troll bogeys than get sorted into either of those houses, as he wanted to get sorted into the brave-at-heart house like his big brother, the sorting hat, saw those thoughts straight away. Ronan almost gasped when the sorting hat opened its mouth once again. ''Ahh...I see. Well, then, better be...GRYFFINDOR!'' The sorting had loudly proclaimed in front of everyone in the great hall, and Ronan's heart soared with relief and joy; as the hat got removed from his head, he made his way towards the Gryffindor table with a smile that radiated happiness and contentment.

Sorting Ceremony
September 1st, 2024 — The Sorting
When the Sorting Hat dropped over the dark girl's silver-gray eyes and she sat there for several minutes, it was likely quite boring for the onlookers. It didn't go on quite long enough to qualify for the infrequently-assigned label of Hatstall, but it came pretty close. Of course, like the spectators gathered at the finish line to the bicycle marathon — or audience to the average Triwizard Tournament event, perhaps — those viewing the Sorting Ceremony could only ever speculate about what those who participate might be experiencing at any given moment. The only thing they would ever see is the end.
For Jenna Graves, that selfsame dark and silver-eyed girl, those few minutes were considerably more engaging.
"Well, well..." the hat said thoughtfully in her ear. "I do love a good head-scratcher from time to time, if you don't mind my saying."
Jenna, who had learned everything she could about Hogwarts before arriving and knew full well what the Sorting Hat was and that it could speak, simply smiled wryly under the hat. Am I really so complicated? she asked, amused. I had myself pegged as a Slytherin, honestly.
"Did you?" the hat chuckled. "Yes, I can see why. You are quite the ambitious one for your age. But those specific ambitions speak of other qualities as well, don't they? Loyalty to family and country, for instance... a healthy thirst for knowledge and learning, too, that's always nice to see..."
Is it even possible to have lofty aspirations without such qualities? Jenna wondered. I can hardly imagine wanting to work for the government without having a reason to do so.
The hat interrupted its own muttered musings to snort at this. "Well, plenty of others can imagine it! For many, ambition is an end, rather than the means. ...Yes, and you are quite brave, at that." This last statement came out as a distracted addendum in contrast to the hat's brisk response to her thoughts.
That seems, Jenna thought, like a kind of sad way to live.
"Philosophically-minded," the hat remarked a little snarkily. "Perhaps Ravenclaw would suit."
Did Rowena Ravenclaw value philosophy? I would have thought that was quite separate to academic learning. The hat's comment surprised Jenna a little, though. She knew what philosophy was, of course, but mostly just by definition. She hardly considered herself a philosopher by any measure.
"Ravenclaw valued wisdom, of which philosophy is a component," the hat noted. "But then, for you, wisdom and learning are but means to an end as well, aren't they. Hm. This is difficult."
The hat seemed delighted about that, Jenna thought. It fell silent for a while, occasionally muttering to itself such things as, "A reasonable measure of cunning and caution..." or "Courageous to be sure, but measured..."
After a while, the hat huffed.
"Well!" it said. "I think there can be only one place that fits for you."
Really? From the way you were going in circles, it sounds as if I would fit in just about anywhere, she replied. The thought was a bit dry; by this point she was feeling a bit exasperated by the hat's directionless analysis of whatever the jumble inside her mind looked like. Until she'd sat on this stool, she'd never thought she was halfway so complicated as a person.
"Oh, you certainly could," the hat said. "But that doesn't mean anywhere would fit with you. This is a school, you know. You might do well in any House, but not every House will do as well with you."
But before Jenna could ask what in blazes that was even supposed to mean, the hat spoke more firmly:
"Brave and loyal, ambitious and cunning, wise and witty, and yet..." the hat said, "...all of those are a means to an end, after all. And to that end, you would do best in the House that encourages one to put their talents to their best use, whatever those talents be. I know that you will work hard to accomplish that," it added slyly, "and to help others along with the same, as you begin your first year in HUFFLEPUFF!"
The hat shouted this last word for all the Great Hall to hear, and the hat was tugged from Jenna's head. She sat there blinking for a bit, stunned. Of all the four Houses, this was the last she would have expected — not because she disliked the notion, but because she hadn't thought herself to be all that strongly-aligned with the qualities Helga Hufflepuff allegedly prized.
Well, she thought ruefully as the Hufflepuff table applauded and welcomed her, and she slid into a seat. I suppose it was a bit silly to think an eleven-year-old witch could... what's the No-Maj word for it? Right. I suppose it was a bit silly to think an eleven-year-old could 'psycho-analyze' herself.
She was still unsure whether or not the Hufflepuff colors of yellow-and-black suited her at all by the time she went to bed.

Sorting Ceremony
As I walked into the Great hall I stared up at the ceiling covered in stars with fascination and awe. I followed the other first years down the row of tables until we reached the front of the impressive room. At the front stood a stool on which a dusty worn down hat sat, I was confused before realizing it was the infamous sorting hat. Once the sorting started I noticed how the people around me were just as nervous and excited as I was. After about half the group had been sorted I heard my name called. I walked up to the stool and sat down looking out at the sea of faces, some were watching me while others talked with their friends and caught up. I felt the hat be placed on my head and heard a voice. It sounded like an older man’s voice but it was in my head, “I see you are very keen to learn, you know much about the things you love and are passionate about them. You may not see it yet but you have the abilities to be very brave and cunning. I see that you are a vigorous learner as well, hmm this is a tough one, better be GRYFFINDOR!” I smiled as the hall clapped loudly especially the table with red and gold uniforms, I quickly hopped off the stool and walked over to sit at the Gryffindor table. This is going to be a great year I thought to myself as I sat beside my new housemates once the feast began

Xiomara rocked on her heels as she tugged on the hem of her slightly oversized robes that her mother was convinced she would 'grow into'. To say she was excited was an understatement, she was ecstatic! It was almost impossible for her to stay still when she knew that in a matter of moments, her name would be called up and she would find out what house she was in.
She had been briefed a little on each of them and the overall process by her grandfather, who had attended the school many years ago (he was old, okay?). Plus, listening to the song confirmed what she already knew as it mentioned some of the traits. In fact, the song was likely more detailed than her abuelo's version! All of the houses sounded great in their own right, though and she had no problem with any of them. Really, she just wanted to know what traits the hat saw in her. She would like to think she was a bit of everything, really!
The eleven year old was loyal - to her friends, at the very least. She was also somewhat brave, always up to try new things or go on fun adventures. She enjoyed learning new things with her curious nature and she also had some cool ambitions, if she did say so herself. Of course, she had not put in a ton of work behind those goals and ambitions but she had time. For now, she was allowing herself to dream.
As far as she was concerned, she would be a great fit in any house! Though, she had no idea which she was most suited towards. These were qualities she had been told about the houses, in a brief summary, and they all seemed rather suitable but there were other traits and more to it than that. Maybe she was braver than she thought or wiser than she realised! Who knew? Not her.
When she heard the Headmaster call out her name, she could not help but grin widely at him. The Headmaster looked so cool, like some sort of famous knight. She had had pictured someone in Merlin style robes but instead, she was getting a King Arthur type! This school was not what she expected at all but she was very happy with that! It seemed cool! She grinned at the old man, before turning her attention towards the stool that others had sat on before her. It took almost all her self-restraint to not run onto the stage and sit down. She walked, rather briskly, trying not to trip over in front of the entire class - and school - because that would be embarrassing.
Sitting down on the stool, she swallowed her spit as she waited impatiently for the hat to rest on her head. This was it, this was the moment that would define who her classmates were, who she shared a dorm with, what colours she proudly wore and mostly, how the world saw her - though she had only started to learn that lesson.
Twiddling her thumbs together, she nervously waited for judgement. It was one thing to be happy with any house but the impatience was killing her. She wanted to know. Her curiosity was getting the better of her. The hat murmured something about being adventurous and how it would require courage. It also mentioned something about being stubborn.
"Come on, tell me," She whispered softly as the hat started to "hmmmm' and 'ahhhh" on her head. It was infuriating her not getting the answer immediately. For some people, the hat had made decision before it barely touched their head! For others, it seemed to be pondering for a while.
She heard a little chuckle, followed by "patience isn't your forte, is it young one? But you're a curious one, aren't you?"
"Yeah so, you're gonna tell me right?" Xiomara asked the hat, rocking back and forth on the stool impatiently. She wanted to know! She needed to know. Okay, she was definitely a curious person by nature. Another chuckle escaped from the top of her head, followed by a loud "RAVENCLAW!"
Xiomara grinned, grabbing her robes in her hands as she practically ran off the stage and joined the Ravenclaw table to find her new friends.

Sorting Ceremony
Rose Wemberly stood in the grand entrance hall of Hogwarts, her heart pounding with a mix of excitement and nerves. The high, vaulted ceilings and the flickering torches on the walls created a magical ambiance that made her feel both small and incredibly fortunate. Clutching her robes tightly, she followed the stream of first-year students as they made their way into the Great Hall.
The vast room took her breath away. Thousands of candles floated in mid-air, casting a warm glow over the four long house tables filled with other students. The enchanted ceiling reflected the night sky outside, a blanket of stars twinkling down at her. Rose's hazel eyes widened in awe as she took in the sight, her anxiety momentarily forgotten.
A stern-looking witch guided the first-years to the front of the hall, where a shabby, ancient hat sat on a stool Rose had read about the Sorting Hat in "Hogwarts: A History", but seeing it in person was entirely different. The hat seemed to hum with magic and history.
As names were called alphabetically, Rose's anticipation grew. One by one, students took their seats on the stool, the hat placed on their heads, and after a brief moment, their house was announced. Cheers erupted from the respective tables, and the newly sorted student would join their new housemates.
"Rose Wemberly", the stern witch finally called.
Rose's heart leaped into her throat. Taking a deep breath, she walked forward, her legs feeling like jelly. She sat on the stool, and the hat was placed on her head, covering her eyes. The world went dark, and she held her breath.
"Hmmm", a voice whispered in her ear. "Curious. Very curious. I see kindness, a gentle heart, and a strong sense of loyalty. An eagerness to learn and resilience despite your anxieties. Yes, I know just where to put you."
Rose's heart raced. She silently wished to be placed where she would feel at home.
"Hufflepuff!" the hat declared loudly.
The Hufflepuff table erupted in cheers and applause. The stern witch lifted the hat from Rose's head, and with a wide smile, she made her way to the cheering table. Her new housemates welcomed her warmly, patting her on the back and offering words of encouragement.
As she took her seat among them, she felt a deep sense of belonging and relief. The warmth and camaraderie of Hufflepuff House immediately put her at ease. She glanced around the Great Hall, taking in the sights and sounds, feeling more excited than ever for the adventures that awaited her at Hogwarts.
The Sorting Ceremony continued, but Rose's mind was already racing with thoughts of her new house. She remembered the stories her adoptive parents and brother had told her, the traditions, and the values of Hufflepuff. She felt a surge of pride knowing she was now part of that legacy.
As the ceremony concluded and the feast began, Rose looked up at the enchanted ceiling stars twinkling down at her. She knew that Hogwarts was going to be a place of growth, discovery, and friendship. Surrounded by her new Hufflepuff family, Rose felt ready to embrace the magic of her new life.

As the heavy doors of the Great Hall swung open, Elena Clark felt her heart racing. Hogwarts was immense, even more grand and majestic than anything she had ever imagined. She had replayed this moment in her mind, exploring all the possibilities and meticulously planning every detail of this grand event. She took a few steps around, watching the other first years who were calling out to each other, laughing, and making new friends. Her heart tightened, the anxiety that had accompanied her all her life clutching her stomach. She stood by the staircase, looking around, praying no one would notice her. Or rather, praying that someone would notice her. She quickly dismissed these thoughts, refusing to let her fear ruin what was going to be one of the most important days of her life. She took deep breaths, one hand on the railing, and recited passages from the History of Hogwarts, a book she had read and reread over the summer.
Gryffindor, Slytherin, Hufflepuff, and Ravenclaw. Of course, Elena already had her preferences. She had even sorted everyone she knew, starting with her parents, into one of the four houses. Mom is definitely a Hufflepuff. Dad is somewhere between Gryffindor and Hufflepuff. Can animals be sorted ? Storm would definately be...Lost in her thoughts, she jumped when a young girl bumped into her. After exchanging a few smiling words, the girl joined her friends. Elena, interrupted in her train of thought, looked around again. To her surprise, the painting she had been staring at blankly for several minutes was now empty, the lady who had occupied it gone to play cards with the neighbors. Suppressing a smile, she refocused on the large double doors. Her thoughts raced again. How do they paint the portraits if the person already exists? Do they just make the canvas and let the person come to it? Because there would be duplicates if they repainted it. And the chocolate frog cards, why are there duplicates? Do the photos sense when they're about to be opened and go into their packaging? Or are there really duplicates? And if there are duplicates, can you converse with yourself? If a painting is made while the person is still alive, is it- Elena's continuous flow of thoughts was interrupted again by the opening of the doors.
In awe, Elena stepped into the Great Hall. Her thoughts quieted before the magnificence of the place. The hall was vast, its ceiling enchanted to reflect the night sky, complete with sparkling stars. Floating candles cast a warm glow, illuminating the long house tables that stretched out before her. After the headmaster's speech, a voice resonated through the hall. She turned her gaze and smiled when she saw the Sorting Hat. She listened to the words of its song, confirming what she had read. She waited her turn, the stress making her head spin. She tried to spot people she might potentially approach when her name rang out across the hall. "CLARK, ELENA !"
Her mind went blank, her ears buzzed, and she felt like everyone could hear the pounding of her heart. She walked forward, praying she wouldn’t trip. She sat awkwardly on the stool and shivered as the hat was placed on her head. The following silence let the explosion of questions, thoughts, and anxieties she had been holding back run free. A slight chuckle echoed in her ears. "So much activity under this calm exterior." It shifted slightly. "I sense... I sense great determination, an insatiable curiosity..." Elena's heart swelled. Ravenclaw. I know that's where I belong. The hat hummed softly. "Is that so? I also see a pure heart and unwavering loyalty, along with a fierce desire to be appreciated by all. Wouldn’t you be better in Hufflepuff ?" Elena tilted her head. I think everyone has a bit of each house in them. In truth, Elena had been torn between Hufflepuff and Ravenclaw. She felt she had a Ravenclaw mind but a Hufflepuff heart. The hat shifted again. "Every human is a complex being. But I sense a desire to understand the world that will only blossom in one house." Elena held her breath. "RAVENCLAW !"
Applause erupted. Her head spinning, Elena rose clumsily from her seat and nearly ran to join her table. Her house. Her cheeks hurt from smiling so much. She felt like she was living a dream and prayed not to wake up. She sat down with the strange feeling that her interaction with the hat had lasted both a few seconds and an eternity. The people around her greeted her and immediately resumed their heated debate on the different interpretations of a book Elena had read several times. Shy at first but increasingly passionate, she joined the discussion, overwhelmed by the feeling that she had finally found her place.

Sorting Ceremony
Patti had an unforgettable day when she finally arrived at Hogwarts. Her eyes were almost filled with tears, not because of anxiety but because of her curiosity. As the Great Hall’s doors opened, the hall was surrounded by many little wizards and witches. She had heard so much about Hogwarts from her parents and siblings, but seeing it in person was a totally new experience for her. She was mesmerised by all the magic flying around her.
She wiped a tear as she walked among the newcomers. It was so crowded, and all these long tables were filled with students, laughter, chatter, and joy. “My heart is going to explode soon,” Patti thought. Before long, Professor Solomon Lear welcomed the new students and called them to the Sorting Hat. Patti was waiting to be sorted by the Sorting Hat with the newcomers. Her heart raced, and her hands were sweaty as she followed what was happening around her. She tried to stay calm but failed.
When it was her turn, the professor called out, “Patti Clements!” Patti’s vision was blurry; she was so excited. Patti walked to the stage with racing emotions in her blood. As the hat was placed on her head, she heard the voice of the hat. “Hmm, very brave and adventurous. You struggle with your emotions, but there’s great potential in you. I think you belong in… GRYFFINDOR!”
The Gryffindor table exploded with cheers and applause. The professor took off the hat, and Patti walked over, feeling like a winner. Sitting down among her new friends, she knew she was in for an adventure. Her observant nature would help her learn a lot, and her adventurous spirit would lead her to many exciting experiences.

wc: 355Rachel's heart pounded as she stood among the sea of first years. While she had flipped through some of her books for this school at year home, none prepared her for the sight she was met with in the Great Hall. She would have to write to her brothers and tell them that the ceiling looks like the night sky. She was still taking in her surroundings when a booming voice snapped her attention back to the front of the room.
She fidgeted with the sleeve of her robe as she listened to the headmaster. Tad he spoke, his voice faded as her thoughts began to wander. Would she indeed end up in the house her heart desired? She still didn't fully understand how magic worked. When she fell into a dark hole of doubt and fear, the room was filled with the sorting hat song. She was mesmerized by its history, and she loved the qualities of each house.
At the song's end, she realized she would make a home wherever she ended up. She was determined to find her new family for the next several years. She watched as student after student was called forward. Some students looked nervous, while others were impatient to discover their place.
"Rachel Greenford,” her name bounced off the walls.
Her legs felt like jelly as she commanded them to move. Her wild hair bounced with each step towards the stool. She slowly lowered herself onto the seat and gently placed the hat on her head.
"Ah, a muggle-born," the hat mused, its voice a whisper in her ear. "Curious and optimistic... fiercely loyal and full of heart."
Rachel held her breath, her eyes wide with anticipation.
"There's no doubt about it," the hat was speaking loud enough for everyone to hear, "You belong in Hufflepuff!"
A wave of relief washed over Rachel as she hat made its declaration. The Hufflepuff table erupted in cheers, and she beamed as she ran to her new housemates. As she found an empty seat, she couldn't contain the smile on her face. She had seen her home away from home. This year would be the best of her life, and it was only the beginning.

Sorting Ceremony
Forward Dated: 1 Sep 2024

The Sorting Ceremony was one of the most anticipated events for the new students at Hogwarts. Marcus stood in line with the other first-years, his heart pounding with excitement and a touch of anxiety. The Great Hall was filled with the curious eyes of older students, watching as Headmaster Lear called each name in turn.
He watched as student after student walked up to the stool and had the hat placed on their heads. Sometimes, the result would be instantaneous—one time the hat had barely made it onto the young girl's head before it was shouting out "RAVENCLAW!", but sometimes it would take a couple of minutes. On these occasions, you could feel the tension growing the longer it went on.
After the first couple of names, Marcus' attention began to drift. He continued his visual exploration that he'd begun when he first walked through the doors to the Great Hall. His eyes wandered over the stonework—the walls, the columns that framed the door on which the braziers were lit, as well as the animal representations for each house that held more braziers, lining the side walls.
He blinked and brought himself back to the present as he caught the Headmaster loudly calling for "Gabriel, Marcus."
Marcus took a deep breath and stepped forward, feeling the weight of countless eyes on him. He climbed the steps to the dais where, he felt, his future awaited him. Headmaster Lear gave a quick, one-handed wave towards the stool in encouragement, and as soon as he took his seat, the old man placed the well-worn fabric on his head.
"Hmm," said a small voice in his ear, the hat's tone contemplative. "Interesting. Very interesting. A strong mind, filled with curiosity and courage. A deep desire to prove yourself, I see."
Marcus swallowed hard, his thoughts racing. He remembered his father's words about the importance of bravery and standing up for what was right. He also thought about the tales of Gryffindor, the house his father had proudly belonged to during his time at Hogwarts.
"Ah, yes," the hat continued, picking up on Marcus's thoughts. "Your father was a Gryffindor, wasn't he? Michael Gabriel was a notable student in his time. And you wish to follow in his footsteps, do you?"
"I do," Marcus thought firmly. "I want to be brave and strong, like him. I want to protect others and make a difference."
The hat chuckled softly. "A noble desire indeed. But remember, true courage comes from within, not just from family legacy. Talking of legacies, why not follow after your mother and go into Ravenclaw? You may have the heart of a lion, but you also have the brains of a bird. Either way, I see potential for you to be a great wizard."
Marcus felt confused for a moment, unsure if having 'the brains of a bird' was a compliment or an insult, but then a surge of pride and determination as he took in the rest of the hat's statement. Whichever house the ancient artefact chose for him, this was his moment—the beginning of his own journey.
"Hmm, happy enough for either, I see. That in itself is brave. So," the hat declared loudly, "it better be... GRYFFINDOR!"
The Gryffindor table erupted in cheers and applause as Marcus removed the Sorting Hat, his face glowing with happiness. He handed the hat back to the Headmaster and made his way to the cheering table, where he was greeted with pats on the back and warm smiles.
Marcus found a seat among his new housemates, the initial nerves fading away to be replaced with a sense of belonging and excitement. As he looked around at the sea of friendly faces, he knew he was exactly where he was meant to be.
