History’s too old

Date: 13/12/24
𝕽uth took in the welcoming scent of books, sighing contentedly as she walked into the library. Its sights were all too familiar, now that she frequented the place ever since winter came, brushing the grounds clean of her favourite leaves and replacing them with wet grass or piles of snow, hindering her walks.
It wasn’t that Ruth didn’t like winter or anything like that, it was just…less comfortable, less lush. Ruth loved the sights of autumn, when there was the clash of orange and amber and the confetti of raining yellow leaves drifting down every tree. When there were leaf piles, even, for students to jump into, making leaf(?) angels as they let their laughters rise up to the sky. It just felt different. The only upside to winter might as well be Christmas, a long holiday and hot chocolate.
But no, those were just excuses. Today, though, Ruth did have a reason of coming to the library. Just earlier today, Ruth had run into Maisie and realised that she might have a subtle interest in the art of sewing. The intricate fragility of it all, and how graceful sewing techniques were, made Ruth wonder if she could have a try and tackle it herself. Besides that, perhaps coming to the library to scrounge for topics on sewing would allow her to get closer to Maisie. She was a nice girl, from what Ruth could see, and it’d definitely be lovely to spend more time with her.
And so Ruth Fairchild set off through the library, glancing through shelves. Was there even a sewing section? Sewing itself was a muggle thing, wasn’t it? Maybe magical sewing, then she mused to herself, popping her head around the corner. Hm?
Another girl was there, posture slightly hunched as she flipped through pages of a well worn book, filled with squares and moving pictures. The cascading golden curls the girl had let lose covered her face, hindering Ruth from seeing who it was. Of course, though, Ruth could recognise the bundle of hair anywhere. She grinned, walking forward to greet Pam.

The moving pictures had sure ran their course on Pam. It interested her way too much and she was definitely gonna learn to do it. Pam browsed through the books on the shelves, searching for something which may teach her something about wizarding photography. She really liked to read about the topics she was interested in and the books, somehow, always smelled so nice.
Pam had been outside earlier, wanting to feel the winter breeze on her like always. Others found the wind freezing and honestly, so did Pam, but god she loved the feeling of it. She was probably weird that way. Well, it wasn't like she would freeze anyway because she made it a point to wrap herself up entirely before going out. And by entirely, only her eyes would be exposed. She sure loved feeling like a penguin too. It had become a common activity for her now, going outside in the early evening to the grounds to watch the sun set and be a generally lovesick girl for the thing called snow. She was often glad for all the scarves she had brought from home.
Pam fingered though the lines of books, gradually forgetting what exactly she was looking for and taking some time to admire the feel of the books on her fingers. Finally, her fingers rested on a thick well worn-out book, much different from the others near it, and curiously, Pam drew it out and carried it over to a nearby table. A yearbook? Cool, maybe I can find some known families. She flipped through the pages slowly, dedicating herself to studying the pages in the book.

𝕽uth walked closer to Pamela, a grin on her face at the sight of the familiar girl. I wonder if she comes often?Ruth pondered to herself. She could ask. Perhaps they could do study sessions together.
“Pam, hey! Fancy seeing you here.” Ruth offered the girl a wave, peeking over her shoulder. A yearbook? Well, what was Ruth expecting when she caught sight of the pictures? Ruth traced the edges of the pages with her eyes, marveling at its yellow. A worn book. Who knew how long it was? Probably on the cover, but Ruth could ask that later. What caught Ruth’s gaze was the scenes in the pictures.
They all seemed as ancient as the book. The way they were taken, their uniform, the places. Hogwarts was simply so old, and the book was proof of that. Imagine all the yearbooks in the library waiting to be opened again. “A yearbook? What are you looking for?” she inquired at her friend, curious of the girl’s intentions. Perhaps if they were nothing serious, she could take a look at the book herself. Something about it pulled her towards reading it, as if some sort of spell. Knowing the world she was in, that was a possibility.

Pam was so engrossed in the book, that she hadn't noticed the familiar Hufflepuff approaching her. She started, the book dropping out of her hands and landing on the table with a thud, "Oh my god, Ruth you scared me!" She dramatically placed a hand on her chest, "If I die my dad will kill you." She flashed the girl a grin, "Hi yourself. It's good to see you."
She moved the thick book a little towards her so she could see. "Not looking for anything specific, just wanted to see if I could find some familiar names, you know." She pointed to the chair next to her, "Come sit. Wanna join me?"
She smiled up at the girl, rather happily. Her interactions with Ruth had been quite a bit. They seemed to randomly bump into each other wherever they went. She had come to like the girl a lot. She knew the fact that Ruth liked to come to the library about as frequently as Pam herself did. She had heard of it from.....her mind drew to a blank as she tried to remember where she had got that piece of information. She shrugged it off, "Anyway, what are you here for? Studies or hanging out?"

𝕽uth let out a chuckle at Pam’s attempted joke, though deep down wondered if her statement had some truth to it. Now that she thought about it, she never got to talk to Pamela well enough to know stuff about her besides what she showed outside, which was just sunshine, sunshine, and more sunshine. Ruth definitely wouldn’t get enough of it.
Maybe next time. For now, Ruth nodded vigorously to Pamela’s offer, sitting down next to her and craning her neck to admire the picture even more closely. So fascinating and intricate. “You know I’d join you any day, Pam,” she replied, eyes still glued on the book, though she returned the dazzling smile Pamela was throwing in her direction. Ruth could feel it on her cheek and through the corner of her eye. It was also that she could sense someone staring at her. The itch that came from that was subtle but still noticeable.
"Anyway, what are you here for? Studies or hanging out?"Ruth turned to look at her friend, cocking an eyebrow. “Pam, I wouldn’t want to hang out with friends at the library. We would simply make too much noise, I believe. I just…” she flailed her arms, gesturing to the snowy outside. “…see each other here often, too much. But well, I suppose yes, studying.” Ruth made a mental note to go back to searching for some sewing books later.
Spending time with Pam felt to be a great way to unwind first, after all.
A sudden thought came to her mind as Ruth recalled what Pam had said previously. “Familiar names? You mean, family names of people you know from this school or something else? Hey, either way, I could help. I’m pretty sure I have a good eye for things like this.”she winked.

Lol she has a good point.
Pam snickered, "I dunno, Ruth. Sounds like a pretty good reason to bring friends into the library to me, don't you think?" She grinned at the thought, mentally saving it for future reference. Pam had developed a weird kind of interest in breaking the school rules, maybe because some of them just seemed so breakable. Besides, it wasn't like she was going to sneak into the Forbidden Forest. Yet.
She hummed softly, turning her attention back to the book in her hands, "Yes basically family names of my friends here. Maybe some teachers? Just anything similar." She tilted her head as she realised something, "Hey, are you a half-blood too Ruth? Maybe we can find someone from your family too!"
Or my mother.
Pam froze as the thought occurred to her in a flash, totally forgetting what she had been doing. She didn't voice out that thought though, choosing to keep it in. Her mother was a sensitive topic for her. Although, that didn't stop her from thinking a little further. Which year would my mother have graduated in? She would make it a point to ask her father once she went home during the holidays. Since I'm born in 2013, would it have been around...2005?
She cleared her throat, snapping herself out of it. She turned to Ruth. "So....we can starting looking I guess?"

𝕽uth cast a long look at Pamela as she slotted in a rather rhetorical question. The way she seemed to phrase it and the snicker she gave Ruth was cheeky, and Ruth knew it meant something much more than being sunshine and rainbows. She felt her grin widen at the sight. Perhaps it would be very fun to get closer to Pamela after all.
However, when asked about her status, Ruth bit her lip, shaking her head solemnly. "No, unfortunately. I'm a muggleborn." Ruth's happy deamour shifted to glum.
It was just so disappointing that neither if her parents or her siblings had ever been to such a wonderful school. It left a bitter taste in her mouth when she couldn't experience the school along with Rita or Aaron, let alone ask advice from her parents. She felt isolated in this mission, though there was still Ace. But...
Plastering a small smile on her face, Ruth began to flip the pages mindlessly, trying to push away her sorrow. "I can still help you find some people! Do you perhaps know who are the half-bloods and purebloods in our year?" Ruth herself was recalling everyone that she had met before, wondering if she ever categorised one within the two groups.
It felt somewhat easy to identify purebloods. The air around them, and the rather sophisticated, felt trained to make others feel bad about themselves. Of course, that was just a stereotype. But most came from families that were revered and respected, and as such the elegance they carry throughout the school is prominently seen.
Halfbloods, though, that's another manner. They felt to be an in between of the purebloods and muggleborns, where they could have been raised to know magic or lived without knowing of its existence. That made half-blood students incredibly hard to decipher between the other two groups available.
As a Muggle-born, Ruth could tell they were the lost lot. The ones who probably struggled far more, or coped surprisingly well enough to be mistaken for another group. Despite being in that group, Ruth couldn't say much about it. She wasn't very sure she had associated herself with another muggle-born yet. Everyone seemed too unique to be considered otherwise.
But muggle-borns...how did they get magic? It was an uncomfortable question. Ruth blinked it away, throwing in a other brutal joke, "Well, I doubt any of your family members are as old as this book. You might have to find another one, unless you're attempting to scrounge through family trees--" Ruth stopped, then stood up suddenly.
Stalking around the table Pamela had chosen, she paced back and forth, murmuring to herself at rapid speed. "“Okaybutwaitthismakesnosenseunless–unlesssomewherealongthelinesomeoneinmyfamilyhadasmallmagicaltrait–likemagiccan’tjustpoofright?Or–orcanit?Imeanithappenstomugglebornsbutit’sallgeneticsright?Somekindofallelething?Recessivetraitsmaybe–yesthatmakesense-recessivegenestravelthroughthefamilylinewithoutshowingbecauseitneedstobepaired–sowhatifmyparentswerecarriers?CarriersthathadtohaveachanceandthenboomI’mtheluckyonethatgotthematchingalleles!Butthenwhendiditstart?Where?Whowasintheyearbooklast?Ormaybe–maybeI’mthefirstlikeever?ThefirstFairchildtobemagical–statisticallyunlikelyright?Butit’spossiblebecausemagic’sanaturalforceanditdoesn’tfollowrulesofcommoninheritance–sometimesitjustchooses–choosespeople,randomly,becauseofcourseitdoesbecausewhywoulditbeconsistent?Butstillifthere’sanymagicinthereatall–inmypast–howwouldIevenknow?Noonekeptrecords,there’snofamilytree,it’sjustgone–butwhatifit’sbeenlatentforgenerationsandI’mjustthefirstoneinforevertopickitupagain?ButthenagainIcouldalsobe–like–groundzero,thefirstoneeverbornwithit–butthat’ssounlikelybutstillnotimpossiblebecausemagicdoeswhatitwantsit’smagic–whataretheodds?”
Her breath caught, and she blinked rapidly, eyes darting back to the yearbook. “What. Are. The. Odds?"
Ruth stopped, then groaned.

Speech -- Thoughts
Silence.
Pam gaped at the girl as she stopped her monologue. We should put her in a band as a rapper. She felt her lips twitching and quickly cleared her throat, turning her head away from her as she said, "Well, I guess we know where to start then. Besides, this book is pretty thick, so it will probably have a number of years in it. We'll see." She looked up at the girl and smiled gently, "Come and sit down will you? And calm down."
She turned her attention back to the yearbook, "You're right. It's possible that you're the first with magic, but it's more likely that it's been dormant in your bloodline. On that note, we can start with how long we know it's been, you know? Like till how far behind do you know that your family definitely doesn't have magic? Grandparents? Great-grandparents? If we know that, then we can find out an approximate time from which we can search for a magical family member." She stopped, fingering the book thoughtfully, before turning to her friend sharply, "But...did you say there's no family tree? Like, does your family not have one at all, or do you not know about it? Having a family tree would be pretty necessary. Because, since you're a muggle-born, we don't know which side of your family would be magical and well, I suppose your mother's side isn't a Fairchild, is it?" She leaned back in her chair, "I suppose we can start with your father's side though. Your grandparents should be Fairchilds after all."
Pam had always felt bad for the muggle-borns. It was probably very hard for them, surviving in such a world. And Pam knew the fact that muggle-borns weren't always welcome either. She had heard of those kinds of magical people, specifically some purebloods, who were less than accepting of muggle-borns. They probably thought kids with no magical backgrounds didn't belong here. It was sometimes disgusting honestly. Pam was lucky, both because of the fact that she was a Half-blood and because she hadn't met such a pureblood like that yet. Most of the people she'd met were nice. She just hoped Ruth hadn't met any yet too.
She pushed her thoughts away, and asked Ruth with a grin, "Did I get all that right?"

𝕽uth slowly began to nod, then sat back down just as Pamela had asked her to. The reassuring smile her friend had given her was lovely, but the girl was still breathless after the analysation. Who knew reading genetics would make things easier?
But Pam was right. Without a family tree, she wasn't going to be able to do what she needed to do, which was find her magical ancestors(if she had any). And what if she didn't? Her gaze lingered back at the book, with its moundful of pages waiting to be read. To scoure through that on her own time was something Ruth was willing to do...it'll just cause a disappointment to her if she couldn't find what she was looking for, even though that opened up to further possibilities that would also take ages to find.
What would be the fastest way? Ruth leaned down, gazing all around her. There was bound to be a book about inheritance of Magic somewhere in the library. Perhaps she could take a look. Then she went back to Pam, who was innocent and bright. Ruth didn't want to bother her with all the finnigans. She had to do this on her own....first. She stood up, suddenly not in the mood for faking enthusiasm.
"Hey Pam, you know what, it's alright. Look, I'm just gonna go search for the books I came here for, then go to the dorm to read. I...ah, see you around," she offered a tiny wave and a broken smile, before wandering away to get a book on sewing.
And a book that will start her journey.

What? What happened?
Pam frowned, watching her friend walk away. Did I say something wrong? Maybe I shouldn't have brought up the family tree thing? She fidgeted uncomfortably, carefully closing the book and pushing it away from her.
"Maybe I should see if I can find my mother? Since I'm alone now..." She muttered to herself. She pulled the book close to herself and then hesitated. It had been a long day. "Perhaps I should take a leaf out of her book and do what I had come here for too."
She made up her mind and stood up, swiftly putting the book back into the place she had taken it from. She bit her lip, giving it one last look and turning away. She felt a little sad, the abrupt end to the conversation left her feeling uncertain. I do hope Ruth's not mad at me or something.
She sighed, there was no point worrying about it right now. Perhaps she would ask her when she saw her again. She wandered away from the section where she had found the yearbook, aiming to find the photography books she had meant to at first.
"Then I'm gonna go have some hot chocolate in my dorm." She murmured, feeling slightly better at the thought. Well, time to find some books first.
