Something he was learning quickly was that history never repeated, but it surely always rhymed. It not only rhymed, but rhymed in a way that always seemed to resolve in the same way. Even as he was making ready to brace, knowing full well that there was no way that he would be allowed to run rampant this far ahead of the rest of the Ravenclaw crowd, a pair of spells struck him. By effects of both, he had a good idea of what they were and whom they were from: the seniors in the rear with an Indomitus and a Depulso.

As if hooked by a curved cane like one would be in one of those cheesy Vaudeville cartoons when an act was too terrible to let continue on the stage, the boy felt a force yank him backwards, past the Ravenclaw youngers who quickly took his place in bulk. The familiar and exhausting feeling of success and potential self-confidence once again slipped from his fingers, another sensation of being ripped away from something he had hungrily sought after for literal years.

Back into the open field he went, but the spellwork's effects were not done yet: in a cruel irony that called back to the race just before this one, Orabella began to kick and buck. "Oh come on, not again!" He pleaded to the dominated broom, willing himself to hold on as he recalled the backfire that had subjected him to this same situation and had rendered him as the most useless component of his team.

It only took a slip of his fingers on the lacquer, and he was freefalling again. Combined with the backwards momentum that had already come from the Depulso, he scattered new grass backwards as he rolled and tried to tuck to protect his head, which had banged on the ground on contact. It took a second for him to realize he wasn't moving anymore and that the world wasn't spinning. His breath was in his ears as he quickly uncurled and then regretted the act as the light caused his head to split. Blinking quickly again, he watched Pericles' and Dealla's shadows flutter across the ground as the material casually soared overhead. Not a single Gryffindor was among the blue anymore.

'Sei geloso. You're jealous.' The insidious whisper slithered in the back of his mind, the familiar feeling of black leather dancing on his cheeks. He grit his teeth, willing the blue eye from his mind even as he felt it searing his back with its conceit. "I can do this." He bit back. "It's not about win or lose, it's about fun. Entertainment."

Alas, he did not have to remember any particular moment to know how it was that Gitano would have responded to such a flimsy excuse. He was dashing for Orabella. Noé's gift. "We've still got a horse in the race. It might not be me, and I might break my legs someday... but there's always a chance. There's a chance, and we've got it. Something you'll never understand." He muttered mostly to himself, squeezing his eyes shut as nausea started to ripple through him. Head, stomach. Concussion...

Just a little more, everything that he could give.

Description: Marvelous Spatuletails are medium sized hummingbirds, averaging between the lengths of 10-15 cm (if including the male's spatules) and weighing 5 grams (because even for hummingbirds that 'bulk up' for the purpose of migration no hummingbird exceeds 30 grams due to their necessity to be lightweight for flight and high metabolism). Its body is described as being 'about the size of a fluffy ping-pong ball'. Its plumage is usually white and green on its underbelly, and bronzy on top. Males possess blue crest feathers, a turquoise throat patch, and a black line cutting down a white chest and abdomen, whose side feathers are green. Its call is of a high melodic frequency described as "a repeated high-pitched buzzy metallic note...'tzzz...tzzz...' during its aerial display". Its calls include "an upslurred high-pitched sweet note 'tswee'" and "a more strident 'tsik'".

The most distinguishing feature of the male marvellous spatuletails are of course his spatules; two outermost tail feathers which are long, raquet-shaped, and possess indigo or violet-blue discs (spatules) capable of being flicked about independently. These feathers are not fully developed in juveniles, but they can grow up to three or four times the length of the bird's own body.

In this currently aged Animagus form (16 years old as of 2024), Piérre would be a petite 5 cm long (not including his juvenile tail feathers--as he is a male--which adds only an additional 9 cm), and a near weightless 4g.

Distinctive Markings:

Unlike the typical blue crest and violet spatules of a mundane Marvellous Spatuletail, the spatules and crest color of Mr. Marchonné's animagus form instead carry a structural coloration that varies all over the spectrum; resulting in his color being of all chromatic hues dependent on the way the light hits his feathers (in such a way that while he possesses the Marvellous Spatuletail body, he also expresses the Fiery Throated Hummingbird's various iridescent colorations).

The head crest feathers of Mr. Marchonné's animagus form are slightly longer than an average Marvellous Spatuletail's and they seem to possess a slight curl like his human hair. This results in the formation of what can only be described as an ahoge of feathers that curls forwards over its head as if aiming towards the bill.

"AAAAAAAAA!!" Zach screamed out his lungs through units. Besides flying, screaming was all he did in this race. I'm gonna die, I'm gonna die! His heart beat so fast. Poor boy. Even though he was considered lucky to reach this unit, he still couldn't help but feel scared, no matter how much he tried to be positive. He wondered when the game would finish.

After the light came the heat. And it was not a typical cozy fireplace on a winter night kind of heat. This was the inside of an oven while someone bakes a cookie kind of heat. Sweat was dripping on her face. Maybe she should've spent more time on cardio instead of obsessively practicing speed and accuracy.

But who in their right mind installed that many heat traps in a broom racing event? This was borderline criminal. Was this still a school event or a creative way to get rid of underperforming students? Frying students mid air for character development is ridiculous.

Despite all that, she flew her broom like her life depended on it.

Raizel had hoped that they were going to do well this time, but that was starting to fade as their team continued to face countless misfortunes in one go. Spells were casted, including her own and things didn't exactly go well for them. She couldn't see exactly what was going on with her other team because she was focused on doing what she had to do for Gryffindor but she got a glimpse of their captain still on the ground below and something flying off of her hand. Was that her wand? Oh great.

“This is not good, this is not good at all…” She uttered with annoyance in her voice. No, she can't bear to lose one more time but it was starting to look like that’ll be the outcome with how things are going. While it is still too early to draw conclusions… this was already starting to look like the race against Slytherin with them falling behind. Against Hufflepuff, they did great but that victory was robbed from them still. She is starting to question the point of their training and hard work if losing is the only outcome now.

Frustrating, sickening, annoying.

In that moment of silent rage, she tried casting her own but it failed. She wanted for that to work, especially when the one that she was aiming for was Dee. In a way, it was more like she wanted to show her that she had at least grown or maybe, she still wanted that single hit on her. “Damn it!” She didn't get to linger on that thought for too long, knowing that it is foolish to get herself distracted but that was already too late for her to realize now that she had found herself under the spell that she despised the most: The Dancing-Feet Spell. “Oh come on!” She can't take a break, can she? Not just her, but everyone in their team.

Was a single win too much to ask?

As much as she wanted to stop, to save herself from the misery that she knows will come, Raizel instead held onto her broom tight and leaned forward. Despite the anger and disappointment, there was no way she's giving up. She hates herself for that, for that pride of hers. If only that didn't exist then she would probably be by the stands as an audience instead of a racer, avoiding the embarrassment of having a poor performance and losing streak.

Della should know better. When broom racing, one must always think about the racing part—and not get caught up in the barbarities of the sport.

Instead, in a flustered, angry, rash moment, she aimed her wand toward the racers in the sky, narrowing in on one Pericles Dralt. She was going to rip his broom out from under him. She didn't remember her professors drilling "concentration" into her head as she attempted to cast relashio, her frustration seething out of her in great huffs. And then poof! her wand sprang out of her hand with great force, bouncing away through the waterfall.

Okay maybe it was time to call it quits. The Gryffindor captain took a deep breath and tried to center herself before thinking of what to do next.

A pleasant smile spread on Ari's face as he watched his spell hit his marks. Learning to hit two targets at once was proving to be incredibly useful. Unfortunately, that smile didn't last long as he flew through the Chizpurfles and they latched into his wand. His spell-casting abilities would be rendered useless until he could find a way to get them to let go and leave him be. Hopefully the rest of the team could carry the duration of the race if he was unable to find other ways to contribute.

ABILITIES:
Perfectionist - reduced critical failure chance range by 1. In addition, can counter up to 1 point of additional critical failure chances caused by abilities or spells.

Charmer - -1 accuracy to all of your opponents (as defined at the start of the instance regardless of later betrayal). This ability does not stack.

Unfettered Flight - This would allow a player to avoid the debuffs of moving at a faster speed than their broom is actually going when taking extra actions. To explain -- when a racer is taking another action while flying, their move speed is reduced by 50% rounded down; however, they still suffer all of the side effects of moving at the faster speed. This ability makes it so the racer is only suffering the debuffs of the halved speed. So if a user is casting a spell and flying speed 6, they will only suffer the debuffs of speed 3 since that is their actual speed that round.

Spell Spread- You can elect to reduce the accuracy of your spell by -2, increase the DC by 2 and the critical failure range by +1 to target a second user with your spell. If you roll a critical failure, the attack still goes off but the spell backfires on you, causing you to take the full brunt of the attack (you cannot avoid this) and the attack would automatically miss your intended targets.

If messing up a spell to set someone's clothes on fire wasn't enough, he also now had to do an entire penalty lap while on fire. Luckily it didn't hurt, or his ego was bruised so badly enough that he couldn't feel the pain. What a horrible first game to be in, all he could hope for was that he wouldn't also get knocked out.

At the very least, Harlan knew that this was quite the first showing, that was for sure.

Piérre and Della were back on their brooms, but the rest had basically fallen from the scuffle with Ravenclaw. The Revulsion Jinx Pericles and Dealla had tried to use in the first round had finally manifested into something real, taking down three of the lions without breaking a sweat. Harlan, despite being on his penalty lap, had fallen from his dancing feet, unable to keep himself on his broom from kicking around so much. Yikes.

With the Chizpurfles out of the way for all of Ravenclaw now, they only had to contend with the last set of obstacles. Most importantly, a maze.

Alyssea hummed. "Ravenclaw's top three are zooming right ahead! And—wait... Where did the girls go?"

The blonde one... Her name was Aurora, right? Normally, she'd zoom through all the tracks with her scarily-precise accuracy. But where was she now? The only person to come out of the maze was Zach, who was almost a surprise considering the age gap. You'd think the older students would have less of a hard time in the maze.

Alyssea shrugged. "Stuck in the maze, I'm gonna guess. Well! Ravenclaw still has a front-runner, and it's looking pretty strong!"
