Broom Racing HUFFLEPUFF vs GRYFFINDOR - FALL 2024

It was, perhaps, the fault of Martyr's narrator, that would cause her chances on the track to be jinxed. There were grotesque monsters awaiting beyond they fog, they were simply very cleverly hidden. Whoever was responsible for stringing together such obstacles of torment for the race must have been a sadist. And a very brilliant one at that. They were certainly good at their job, whoever this malevolent entity was.

Martyr was trying her best to keep up with her teammate Linda, but a weird sensation she couldn't quite understand made her slow down and start scanning her surroundings. The dhampir had never been the most situationally aware, so she even knew it was a strange thing for her to do. Eventually she paused her flight altogether, forgetting about Linda, as an unusual shape caught her eye. "Huh?" She squinted, as it scurried across the ground, but whatever it was, it was indiscernible. It made her uneasy though.

It wasn't until she heard the announcer, she'd piece together that it was a boggart. Great. Out of all the age ranges assembled for this race, what were the chances of a first year running into it? Realistically speaking, probably high, considering their smaller arsenal of defense. "Yeah, no... fuck that." At a loss for what to do- seeing as she hadn't yet learned the boggart banishing spell- Martyr began looking for a way around the... thing. Maybe she could wait it out. Or hoped it latched onto another racer flying by.

And, she’s still behind, still needs a lot of catching up to do despite her declaration earlier. Does this piss her off, oh, absolutely but that rage is something she needs to keep in check or else, she’ll just fall further behind. So far so good at least. No spells coming her way, probably because she’s not that much of a threat when she’s at the back. Good, then they won’t see what’s coming their way.

While her spell earlier did miss its target, it’s not enough to stop her from trying it again. Casting and flying at the same time is hard for her to do, this race being an opener on what she should be working on next she practices. But if she trusts herself enough, has confidence, then eventually, she might hit her mark. It would be crazy to go for someone more experienced than her since she already missed someone that’s close on her year level but hey, she had duelled tons of older years before, so doing something crazy isn’t that new.

There was only one person that she could reach at this moment so she locked in on them. She calmed her mind, steady her grip on both her wand and broom and she waited. She’s a lion on a hunt. Her prey? Dorion Anderson. A third year against a sixth year? A huge gap like that in year level never went well for her but, you’ll never know. When the right moment came, Raizel wasted no time to make her move. “Dori, I’m sorry.” Okay, maybe just a bit sorry. Dori is her opponent but is still her friend so of course she feels bad for what she’s about to do. “But this is a battlefield! Expelliarmus!”

Dori’s wand went flying.

Whether that was because of luck or just her countless duels finally paying off, she doesn’t know but she’ll take it. It was a nice feeling to finally do something for the team. But of course, that’s not the end of it all. There are still things she needs to do and that’s to keep moving forward as much as she can. Raizel leaned forward, her hold on her broom tightening as she went zooming after that successful attack on the enemy. “Graaah!” She yelled as she got through that thick fog, giving it a quick glance back with a grin on her face. There are many more obstacles ahead so she can’t keep on celebrating those small things.

“Greetings, Mr. Marchonné, how’s the weather?” She said to Piérre just to try and lighten up the mood. As far as she knows, he didn't have a great time much like her after getting blatched and then getting hit by a spell. That ‘s gotta sucks. “Let’s keep at it, shall we?” She was bad at encouragement to tell the truth so that’s the best she could do.

He felt as if he were finally victorious as he finally cast a spell and had it hit someone. This was awesome. Maybe next time, preying on the weak would be a tad bit smarter. Noah succeeded on his travel through a passageway, cool! Perhaps. He didn't find it as big a deal.

"Depulso!" Dori sent a clean spell, even within the fog, at Pierre and saw him disappear back into the fog behind where they had come from. Thank Goddess. But, they didn't have time to celebrate as they heard a familiar voice say sorry before their wand flew out of their hand. Their face twisted up in anger and whipped to see who cast the spell, before seeing it was the dear young girl they had bonded with over summer. "Agh! Oh- Rai!" They gave the young girl a thumbs up, probably against their better judgement. "Nicely done!" They couldn't help but encourage her, but at least they were still ahead of her and Pierre.

"Broom, broom... broom vroom... vroom... broom..." He muttered as he splashed about in the shallows, trying to get to his broom so that he could eventually mount it. He was now thoroughly soaked to the bone. It was going to take a bit of a shower and a good drying before he would be ready at last for the ball that would happen that night. And unfortunately the boy had made a bit of an outfit for himself that required him to somewhat be in relatively good shape in order to wear it right. "Come on now... aha! Gotcha!"

He snatched the broom and then was about to mount... "WHUF! AEIII!" He was suddenly flying backwards, back under the waterfall (getting doused again, oh joy), through the passageway, though admittedly he was able to get one leg back on the broom to twist his body this way and that to avoid the walls yet again, and then into the open field, his feet skidding lightly on the ground as he finally slowed his momentum entirely and regained control of his broom and inertia. He was ahead of the fog... which was good.

"I'm so far behind, WHAT?!" He exclaimed, voicing his thought aloud. "All that for only this far?! Are you kidding me?!" Despite himself a laugh bubbled to his lips, a wild and slightly exhausted one that spoke to disbelief and frustration. "I'M NOT THE ONLY PERSON ON THE TRACK, YOU KNOW! Ugh..."

He urged Orabella forward, starting once again to traverse the obstacles that were ahead. If he could pass them once, he could surely pass them again.

Raizel pulled alongside, and she would be met with the sixth year being completely soaked like a wet cat, goggles slightly lopsided and currently being fixed as well as cleaned with one hand. A broad grin would be returned to her as the boy felt another laugh bubbling. It was all just so absurd. "Please, just Piérre." He chuckled. "I'm in no condition to be called a Mister--I forgot my galoshes and got soaked through, then got hit by a careless driver and then... well I suppose the wind must have taken me back here." He punched his thigh lightly--surely there was some better way to vent his frustrations. "Yeah... keeping at is is the only thing I can really do, I guess. Who knows, maybe they're having more luck up front."

Description: Marvelous Spatuletails are medium sized hummingbirds, averaging between the lengths of 10-15 cm (if including the male's spatules) and weighing 5 grams (because even for hummingbirds that 'bulk up' for the purpose of migration no hummingbird exceeds 30 grams due to their necessity to be lightweight for flight and high metabolism). Its body is described as being 'about the size of a fluffy ping-pong ball'. Its plumage is usually white and green on its underbelly, and bronzy on top. Males possess blue crest feathers, a turquoise throat patch, and a black line cutting down a white chest and abdomen, whose side feathers are green. Its call is of a high melodic frequency described as "a repeated high-pitched buzzy metallic note...'tzzz...tzzz...' during its aerial display". Its calls include "an upslurred high-pitched sweet note 'tswee'" and "a more strident 'tsik'".

The most distinguishing feature of the male marvellous spatuletails are of course his spatules; two outermost tail feathers which are long, raquet-shaped, and possess indigo or violet-blue discs (spatules) capable of being flicked about independently. These feathers are not fully developed in juveniles, but they can grow up to three or four times the length of the bird's own body.

In this currently aged Animagus form (16 years old as of 2024), Piérre would be a petite 5 cm long (not including his juvenile tail feathers--as he is a male--which adds only an additional 9 cm), and a near weightless 4g.

Distinctive Markings:

1. Unlike the typical blue crest and violet spatules of a mundane Marvellous Spatuletail, the spatules and crest color of Mr. Marchonné's animagus form instead carry a structural coloration that varies all over the spectrum; resulting in his color being of all chromatic hues dependent on the way the light hits his feathers (in such a way that while he possesses the Marvellous Spatuletail body, he also expresses the Fiery Throated Hummingbird's various iridescent colorations).
2. The head crest feathers of Mr. Marchonné's animagus form are slightly longer than an average Marvellous Spatuletail's and they seem to possess a slight curl like his human hair. This results in the formation of what can only be described as an ahoge of feathers that curls forwards over its head as if aiming towards the bill.

As Linda was speeding ahead of ALL of them, AngelFyre looked over at Simon who was turning his head to look over at her. He said nothing, but his eyes were twinkling with that come hither look she knew oh so well. It was even expertly punctuated with one of his rakish winks. Under normal circumstances, that swoon-worthy combination would have had her melt, but these were not normal circumstances. What else could the girl do but go forth and hither his way? So hither she did.

They had practiced this and practiced it, and then they had practiced it some more outside of their normally scheduled practices. It was inevitable that he would one day Alley Oop her in a race, so they had sought to be as prepared for it as they could be. And it was a good thing they had because her flying, when she first started learning the maneuver at such an accelerated speed, was not even done with any amount of what could be considered her normal, albeit flawed, AngelFyre-level of precision in flight. Yeah, those first practices were brutal, but they both knew it was necessary. So they persisted.

Now it was time to see if it had paid off or not.

He smiled widely as she flew next to him. “Okay. Just like we’ve practiced. You totally have this.” He slowed a little then swept in right behind her, grabbing the brush of her broom. “Get ready. Here we go!” and as he spoke, she leaned down low over her broom’s handle, placing her hands in the position he had shown her for the greatest stability. As he spun her around and around, she kept her eyes open just liked he had taught her to do, focusing how he had said to do.It all had something to do with her inner ear, the rotation of her head, and where her eyes focused. He had some fancy Healer name for it, optokinetic something or another, but whatever t it was, it worked.

As he let loose, AngelFyre zigged and zagged down the track faster than she ever had in a broom race. And most surprisingly, she probably flew one of the cleanest rounds she had ever flown as well. She had fully anticipated still getting more road rash and maybe some head knocks along the way, but nothing. She even managed to evade a swarm of mosps! At one point, she thought she saw one of her opponents had turned tail and was literally flying back the way she had come.

WTHe…..? Oh.

She was being chased by a Boggart. AngelFyre did have it in her to feel badly for the first year Gryffindor. It was a great break for the Huffles, but even so, some things were just harder than others for novice duelists, racers, or … or… Quidditchers? Was that even a word? What are they called anyway?

When she slowed to her normal speed, she was delighted to find that she could easily see Linda up ahead. She could not tell what was happening with her, but no matter. There was hope. AngelFyre took a moment to take a breath and collect herself. She hoped Simon had seen at least part of her fantastic journey. She knew, no matter how this race ended, he would be so proud of her, but she knew she had only done as well as she had because of his patience and insistence that she pay attention to every detail.

She smiled as she felt in that moment that there was really nothing the two could not accomplish if they did it together. Lucky for them, their “together” was going to be a long time, but time was running short in this race as the FINISH line approached.

Scanning the skies around her for any dangers wearing the red and the gold, she saw none. So far so good. She hoped that those wearing the gold and the black behind her were faring as well. The lions were going to claw for this win.

But badgers yielded to no one.

So much was happening on this race against Gryffindor - and win or lose, the badgers were putting up good determination. Simon was proud of all of his fellow broom racing puffs. From the distance, from the crowd, he could hear chanting grow and it sounded as if they were saying his girlfriend’s name. That made him smile. He had flown with her momentarily and alley ooped her and it must have been a success. He too was cheering for her.
