It was not the first racing for Linda, but it was first where she was co-captain. As she looked at her teammates and Della, she smiled. Let's do it team!

She glanced at Hufflepuff team, finding some friends there, but now wasn't time to think about them. Linda didn't know if she was expecting more fun or something like previous game. Friends were friends, but not during racing against each other. And with this thought she made her way closer to the start.

The first few weeks of school were one massive blur to Marty. She hardly had time to process her own sorting ceremony, let alone her sudden appointment as prefect and speedy placement on the Gryffindor racing team. The positions were better suited for someone- anyone- else, and yet she still found her punk ass sitting in a highchair. Maybe whoever was in charge of all the shuffling had made a mistake.

And if that were the case, well, it sucked to be whoever was supposed to have Martyr's jobs. Because she wasn't going to give them up willingly. You snooze you lose, as the saying goes, and Marty was not going to do any losing.

Especially not today. The first broom race of the year (and the first of the dhampir's early racing career) was met with fiery excitement from the Gryffindor youth. She had done her due diligence in securing a stylish broom: a candy apple red Silver Arrow that had been pimped out to perfection with stickers and questionable decals. It wasn't for everyone, but she sure thought it was cool.

Lining up next to her other pridemates, Martyr gave her knuckles a quick crack before slinging herself over her broom in a heavy, graceless motion. Never a stranger to talking shit, she'd state her intentions with the rival team. "Let's bust some badger ass!" She was so ready for this.

Right out of the gate, the Gryffindor team had a tall order ahead of them: defeat Hufflepuff (always easier said than done) and get to the ball tonight in one piece (surviving that would be another matter). Hopefully another year wiser, at least another faster, Della was up to the challenge. But she couldn't help but feel a bit solemn as she joined her team: This was the first race she would have ever done with Xailah on her team. The older girl had graduated, and she was probably doing much cooler, much gothier things elsewhere—well beyond the realm of Gryffindor broom racing—but Della hoped her spirit was with them on this course. (It was a coincidence how spooky the course was—maybe there was some influence from the retired racer?)

Looking over her team, there were some new faces: Noah (a pleasant boy just a year older), Raizel (who seemed a bit jumpy), and Martyr (making quite the impression for a first-year). Piérre only had one race under his belt, but Della was happy with the exuberance he brought. And Linda, her trusted co-captain and new friend, who, come to think of it, had only joined the team last year. Della hoped this course wouldn't scare any of them away—longevity and good team dynamics go hand-in-hand.

"I don't think there's a dragon on the course, but if there is, we can take it. The thing we really have to worry about is the other players."

Maybe not the most inspiring words, but she knew the badgers usually brought trouble, and it wasn't worth sugarcoating it. Della was out for blood and revenge for last year's broom racing final.

Once Lavinia shouted go, the race was immediately underway. Both teams started out aggressively with spells and blatches against their competitors. Dorion was able to launch Della off her broom, while Matilde evaded Raziel's blindfold spell. It was chaos and Gryffindor seemed to focus their attacks on the experienced Hufflepuff, Dorion. Pierre was able to hit them with the impedimental spell which would be detrimental to Dorion's race in the future. However, they were able to easily evade a full body-bind attempt from Noah. While casting the illegal spot, Noah got significantly lucky by not being spotted and forced to take a penalty.

“It is chaos at the start! Della is already falling to ground as Dorion gets hit by Pierre's spell! AngelFrye casting a spell on herself, hopefully we'll see the impact of it quite soon.” Watching the racers fly forward, Lavinia spotted Simon getting closer and closer to Raziel. Then in a quick moment, Simon swiftly knocked Raziel off their broom! “And there goes Raziel! Falling down to the ground after being blatched by Simon! We've just started and two racers are already off their brooms.”

The fall afternoon happened to have a bit of dense fog of the track that many flyers moved through. Every single one the racers expect for Reyna would be effected by the fog as they continued along the track.

The pack at the front was starting to form with two from both Hufflepuff and Gryffindor accounted for. These four flyers ahd a lot of options ahead of themselves for how they moved forward. Could a team attempt a last minute alley-oop or would it just be a race to avoid the upcoming obstacles?

Naw, there was no way dorion saw him coming. Regardless, she dodged and he was left to zoom ahead a few with his wand in his hand. He had a dumbfounded look on his face and he was wondering if maybe he wasn't fast enough. He decided to just soften his look of confusion and smile.

Clear your mind, this is like duelling but with extra steps, which means she needs all the focus she can get. Whatever happened in Hogsmeade, she’ll have to set that aside for now. If she keeps getting distracted, she doubts she’ll do well in this race. She’ll let everyone down like how she did with her duelling team. The race had started and it felt no different from the unofficial race she had joined last year. She can do this… maybe. No, there is no time to keep doubting or she’ll fall behind.

As Raizel expected, it was chaos right off the bat. Spells were flinged and she’s included among them to try and hinder the other team, to slow them down. But as always, luck wasn’t on her side. To think that it followed her here in broom racing. Then again, it’s not something that she’s able to escape that easily just by switching sports. “Obscuro!” Okay, maybe it’s because she hasn’t practiced enough when it comes to casting spells while riding a broom and not like she has a ton of experience when it comes to it. Casting them while on the ground, yeah, sure, but on brooms? She had only participated in two unofficial races and her practice is mostly just her casting and flying separately.

When she misses, she can’t help but curse in her mind, gritting her teeth out of annoyance. To make things worse, she didn’t even notice how one of their opponents was closing in on her and before she knew it, they had collided. It was no accident, not with how he put in his strength when he made contact with her. If knocking her off of her broom was his plan then congratulations, he had succeeded. “Owowow…” The Gryffindor uttered as she recovered from that fall. She will surely feel these aches later on. Well, it wasn’t just her that got knocked off of their broom from what she can see. “I’ll get them for this.” Oh she sure wishes she will eventually. The race is just starting after all.

At the last second before lifting off, Dori saw Raizel on the other team and gave the younger girl a small wave. They knew that on the course neither of them would hesitate in attacking, but right before felt fine to show amicability.

Dori wasn't sure if they were seen as a threat now or something- but at least their relashio went off without a hitch before having to try and dodge two spells. As soon as the race started, the boy ran his first few feet, flicking the yew wood wand in a quick sigil and pointing it at the eldest Hufflepuff broom racer (@Dorion Anderson) with a whisper of "Impedimenta!" before leaping onto Orabella and beginning to zip off as fast as he could. Taking flight on the gilded broom was like riding on the back of a strong but dangerously tamed stallion--there was an edge of uncertainty that it would remain under the boy's control, but a certain and intangible sensation that beneath the turning tides of command and action that there was a sense of deep-seated trust. Orabella would do as Piérre commanded, even if Piérre didn't fully trust that she would.

Out of the clear skies and then into the fog, Piérre felt as if his very breath had been totally sucked out of his lungs from the sudden chill and mist that enveloped like a frigid blanket. A chill ran down and deep from his head to his toes, and in a matter of seconds his green-lensed goggles had fogged over and reduced his sights to blurry and blobby detailings even with the ability to delineate dynamic movement from stationary being at best a vague sensation of distinguishability and nothing more.

Was this how people with glasses felt? Did they have to deal with this kind of thing all the time?

He hated it. And yet also had now suddenly found a newfound respect for their patience with such a blight.

Well at least he had brought his compass... right?

"Agh! Merda! Crap!" He ejaculated as he realized that the all-important instrument was now burning a hole in the satchel he had brought to the pitch but had forgotten to actually attach to the empty compass holder that was now staring at him glaringly. He had spent so long with a broom that had never had the ability to sport such a nicety that he had completely glossed over and forgotten that this more flamboyant model could host it.

And now he was paying for it, obviously. As he always seemed to do whenever even the slightest thing happened to slip his mind. Miss out on an inch, miss out on a mile seemed to be the common thread when it came to the researchable scientifically improbable odds that the Marchonné had somehow made his modus operandi.

He glanced side to side, trying to find someone in the foggy soup. "Gryffindor?!" He called tentatively. "Anyone able to see anything in this mess?"

Hopefully someone was able to see even a whit in this mess. Enough, at least, to help him be able to discern his own way through to the other side. He hated this. Made him feel like a sitting duck--vulnerable, and as if thousands of eyes were now focused on an exposed back ripe for the stabbing.

Description: Marvelous Spatuletails are medium sized hummingbirds, averaging between the lengths of 10-15 cm (if including the male's spatules) and weighing 5 grams (because even for hummingbirds that 'bulk up' for the purpose of migration no hummingbird exceeds 30 grams due to their necessity to be lightweight for flight and high metabolism). Its body is described as being 'about the size of a fluffy ping-pong ball'. Its plumage is usually white and green on its underbelly, and bronzy on top. Males possess blue crest feathers, a turquoise throat patch, and a black line cutting down a white chest and abdomen, whose side feathers are green. Its call is of a high melodic frequency described as "a repeated high-pitched buzzy metallic note...'tzzz...tzzz...' during its aerial display". Its calls include "an upslurred high-pitched sweet note 'tswee'" and "a more strident 'tsik'".

The most distinguishing feature of the male marvellous spatuletails are of course his spatules; two outermost tail feathers which are long, raquet-shaped, and possess indigo or violet-blue discs (spatules) capable of being flicked about independently. These feathers are not fully developed in juveniles, but they can grow up to three or four times the length of the bird's own body.

In this currently aged Animagus form (16 years old as of 2024), Piérre would be a petite 5 cm long (not including his juvenile tail feathers--as he is a male--which adds only an additional 9 cm), and a near weightless 4g.

Distinctive Markings:

Unlike the typical blue crest and violet spatules of a mundane Marvellous Spatuletail, the spatules and crest color of Mr. Marchonné's animagus form instead carry a structural coloration that varies all over the spectrum; resulting in his color being of all chromatic hues dependent on the way the light hits his feathers (in such a way that while he possesses the Marvellous Spatuletail body, he also expresses the Fiery Throated Hummingbird's various iridescent colorations).

The head crest feathers of Mr. Marchonné's animagus form are slightly longer than an average Marvellous Spatuletail's and they seem to possess a slight curl like his human hair. This results in the formation of what can only be described as an ahoge of feathers that curls forwards over its head as if aiming towards the bill.

"We'll just let the dragon have 'em." Marty quipped, having heard Della's back-and-forth with the other racers. "Or we can beat them real good right here, ain't nuthin' in the rules that states we can't." She offered, far too plainly given context, as she worked on widening a new hole she had made in the sleeve of her uniform.

Not the greatest first impression, that's for sure, but it was an impression.

Martyr was determined to keep up with her lions once the announcer signaled the start of the race. She kicked off into the sky with a jolt, violently sending herself into the sky. It was smooth sailing for the first few miles- for Marty at least, the same could not be said for some of her other pridemates- until she approached a wall of fog. There hadn't been a way around it, at least none that she could see, so through it seemed the only logical solution. She pierced it without further thought.

The fog was far thicker than it initially appeared to be. "What the fuck?" The dhampir spat, squinting through the haze as if doing so would help at all. It didn't. Somewhere ahead (or was it behind?) a voice came through the thick curtain of grey. "Yeah?" Martyr called back. "Over he-" no, they wouldn't know where here was, "er- somewhere!" She looked around on instinct, despite knowing any attempts to discern some kind of direction would be futile. "Nah man! I can't see jack shit!" Were any of the racers caught in the fog even going the right way? If they weren't, it was way too late to do anything about it. All they could do was hope this fog had an end, and didn't lead to some confusing Silent Hill-esque hellscape.

Linda was prepared for chaos to start so she wasn't surprised. It was however sad that two of her teammates were down from the beginning, but she believed that even they can still get as close as possible to the finishing line.

Hearing someone chatting in fog, she sighed. It's hard to see anything, so just try to locate our voices and move there. This was the only advice she could offer him. It was really hard to see anything so all she did was just relying on not changing direction. And soon enough it helped her as she found herself passing fog.
