━━━━ BACKGROUND ━━━━

PRE-HOGWARTS Ming (Given name Ming, Family name Hui) is the only child of rather successful Muggles, both Chinese-British - his father is a financial consultant, and mother a senior lecturer at a college. Because of this, Ming has never quite lacked for anything in his life in terms of material needs. He has, however, always been expected to live up to the expectations set by the rather successful careers of both his parents. A mostly calm and dutiful child, Ming strives to live up to the lofty expectations of his parents. Ming has had little oversight growing up, but the importance of manners and decorum and duty are deeply instilled in him. He is studious and serious, and engages in education, self-development and competition with zeal, as he is expected to succeed in his every endeavor. It is fortunate that Ming enjoys books and reading, as this has minimized the possible conflicts between the bookish boy and his parents. Naturally curious, he spends significant time exploring his reality, either physically or through books. As expected of an only child of his stature, he is also trained in languages (Mandarin and English, he has only just started French), philosophy, & etiquette. It was a pretty big surprise to everyone in his family when we got the letter: Ming seems such a calm, reliable boy and very little that is 'odd' happens around him, or so the adults believe in his life believe.

FIRST MAGIC When he was young, circumstances conspired to have him at his home without his parents. With both his parents working long hours in pursuit of career success, Ming was left alone with the caretaker of the house. The caretaker, while diligent, was only a servant, and did nothing to alleviate his feelings of loneliness or meet his desire for companionship. This was a reality for Ming day and day, month after month. At the age of seven, driven to desperation, Ming's magic manifested in the form of 'friends': balls of light that would float around the room. It didn't last long, he was never quite able to recreate this situation, but the lights made him feel safe; and the experience left a mark on him. Gone was the lonely and scared little boy needing companionship and protection. He had friends, these 'light men', who would be there for him if he ever really needed them. He was not alone. When he excitedly told his parents and the adults about the 'pretty light men' stayed with him, his words were shrugged off as the vivid imaginations of a child. That was fine. He didn't need them to believe him. He had his friends, and he knew the truth.

PERSONALITY If asked to describe himself, Hui Ming would probably say that he is organized and dutiful. He gives a great degree of importance to things such as manners, etiquette and word choice. People who like him might point out that he is studious, well-mannered, intellectually curious and dedicated to the goals he has set for himself. Others may find him to be arrogant, dismissive and generally difficult to interact with.
