Blood Prejudice
Regina leisurely strolled into the Great Hall with her head held high, robes straightened to perfection and not a single hair out of place. As always, the noble witch headed towards her usual spot at the Gryffindor table--at the far end and away from the other rowdy occupants of the House of the Brave. Regina had never, and would never, tolerate the loud and unruly way some of the Lions behaved at the table. What with all the shouting, pushing, shoving, sometimes even full blown arguments...how very ill-disciplined, she sneered to herself. Was this truly the way they should honour Godric Gryffindor, by acting like a group of hooligans? The young noble took an envious glance over at the other House tables where it was much more calm and secretly wished that some of her more 'ruffian' Housemates could at least learn poise and self-control. She silently shook her head and sat down, reaching out to pile some food onto her plate.Gryffindor table, 2nd February 2022, breakfast.
Regina hid her disappointment behind a stoic mask when she realized that her family's owl would not be delivering any letter for her today. Her Mother wrote to her often, asking about classes and whatnot, and it was the only mail that the raven-haired witch ever looked forward to receiving. Merlin knew her Father wasn't affectionate enough to bother with such trivial other than a word or two whenever she received her grades, or to ask if she was behaving well among her older siblings.
Banishing the underlying fear that her Mother was unpleased with her in some way, Regina idly scanned through the pages of The Daily Prophet as she bit into a piece of bread. Her orchid eyes were immediately caught on the bolded lines of PUREBLOODS, and her brows furrowed as she read about the half-blood who so audaciously claimed that 'a half-breed could best any pureblood given a fair battlefield'. As she reached towards the end of the article, Regina scoffed with disdain at the banality of it all. She was never the one to blindly worship blood purity--despite being raised in a family who came from a long line of Purebloods, Regina had been taught to only judge a wizard or a witch by their magic potential, and she firmly believed in the ideology that blood did not define a person's competence. No matter. I should not be distraught over a silly thing such as letters.
However, it was because she was a Pureblood that Regina found it most offensive how a Half-blood was claiming how he could best any Pureblooded wizard on a battlefield. It was nearly impossible that someone who did not possess half the magic potential would be powerful enough to triumph. Most Half-breed weren't even aware of their magic until they have reached eight or nine, compared to Purebloods who could manifest and control it as soon as the age of six. It was simply unthinkable.
"What a farce," Regina muttered to herself, placing the offending newspaper down in favor of finishing her breakfast instead. That was enough nonsense for one morning.

Open to any interaction! Perhaps your character could enter in a serious debate of whether or not they agree with Regina's views on blood purity and magic potential? Or simply to express their own opinion on the article and impress the usually reserved young witch? You decide!

Despite the recent dip in the standards that Hui Ming held for himself, he was still a well-put-together individual. Quiet, well-dressed, and proper; with neither hair nor hide out of place. With his general aloof nature, and his mannerisms, many of the people who knew the Slytherin first-year in passing assumed he was an immigrant pureblood, heir to some family of wizarding accountants perhaps. The impression was wrong, of course, but Ming never felt the need to go out of his way to correct people.
On this day, the Slytherin boy had just been passing through the Gryffindor table on his way to have a last-minute conversation with Miss Evelynn – or, more properly, Prefect Decipio – about some changes he had made to the plans of the Wargames going forward. The proposed changes were sizable, and he felt that the experience of someone older whom he trusted would have been to his benefit. Even in a rush as we was now, the boy possessed an air of calm, a quiet determination to him that was almost palpable.
It was in this state of mind that Ming just happened to walk past a certain upper year.
"What a farce"
The Slytherin first year paused on his way; distracted, perhaps by the enunciation. Or perhaps it was the girl in question, who seemed to hold herself in the correct posture. Or perhaps it was just the general disappointment in her voice that got to him.
Regardless of what it was that actually drew him in, the Slytherin had his interest piqued. The girl in question seemed like suitable company from her dressing and mannerisms, unlikely to fly into an emotion-filled tirade or draw her wand in front of others. So Ming did one of the things he hardly ever did at Hogwarts: he initiated a conversation.
“I beg your pardon, Miss.” The Chinese-British wizard said hesitantly, every word pronounced in proper Queen’s English. “What is vexing you so on this day?”
The bespectacled first-year had done little to follow the wizarding newspaper after his first couple of months in the wizarding world, having long since concluded that this world was not for him. Yes, he would need to know of the culture and societal norms of these odd people to get by, but more and more he fell back upon the habits of his upbringing over the traditions of these spell-happy, loud, and hormone-addled teenagers that made up the bulk of the Hogwarts system and (to his mind) the magical world at large.
Of course, his general disdain for the magical populace was not an opinion he could display freely; and here, in the face of what appeared to be a cultured individual, genuine concern won out over his general caution and dislike.
“Has something unsavoury made its way into the papers again?” Hardly a subtle deduction, given the paper she had put down.
The curtains fell. And the silence was deafening

The raven-haired second-year hadn't planned to linger in the Great Hall any longer than necessary, since she'd much prefer to work on some assignments due next week in the tranquility of the Library or the Study Room. However, Regina's purple eyes snapped up and narrowed at the sight of the boy who had attempted to initiate a conversation with her, standing at the other side of the table with a curious, albeit uncertain, expression on his face.Interacting with @Hui Ming
Instead of giving him an immediate answer, Regina opted to give the bespectacled male a critical once-over to determine whether or not she should indulge in his curiosity. Putting aside the strange fact that he was a Snake--judging by the green of his uniform tie--and yet still chose to openly interact with a Lion, she noted with a pleased quirk of her brow at the confident way he held himself and how proper he was from head to toe. He looked for all purposes a diligent Slytherin, and Regina was even mildly impressed at his perfect pronunciation. The young heiress kept her face carefully blank, of course, as her sharp gaze finally met with his inquisitive one when he made a mention of The Daily Prophet.“I beg your pardon, Miss. What is vexing you so on this day?”
Keen eye and straight to the matter. How very Slytherin.“Has something unsavoury made its way into the papers again?”
"Unsavoury? Perhaps it is, perhaps not," Regina drawled. "It depends on how one chooses to interpret it."
Even though she was naturally headstrong as a Gryffindor, Regina wasn't foolish enough to tackle the subject head-on. The Daily Prophet wasn't immune to attention-grabbing journalists who liked to stir up drama and storm for profit, after all, so it would be smart to look at the problem with a critical eye and not be too hasty with opinions and statements. She still had no knowledge of this Snake's blood origin, so it would be best to not incite any argument until she was certain that the outcome wouldn't end up in pointless theatrics.
Tread carefully with the unknown, as her Father always said.
"Miller. Regina Miller," She introduced herself, her orchid eyes never leaving the boy's face. "You are not aware of the rising controversy caused by Claude Avery then, I presume? About how Half-breeds could overpower any Pureblood in a battle?"
Regina needed to find out on which side he was.

His eyes shot up at the introduction. Now this was a girl who expected her last name to be recognized. That was problematic, since the name rang no bells for him.
“Hui Ming, a pleasure to make your acquaintance Miss Miller.” His response was automatic, drilled into him over years of social gatherings and other events. A bit bland as an introduction perhaps, but the introduction allowed him a simple evaluation of his peers – would they mistake his given name for his family name?
“An interesting claim, and one that – you are correct – I was not aware of.” The Slytherin boy said slowly, playing for time as his eyes found the newspaper across the table. There was but a moment of silence before he continued. “But not really all that contentious, if you really think about it.”
The words were deliberately slow, keeping pace with his mind as it worked through the issue. The Slytherin tilted his head ever so slightly, his eyes focused back on the Gryffindor upper-year. “Maybe I am misunderstanding the facts, but this Mr. Avery made no mention of magic. So what is a fair battlefield, really? I can admit freely that I would not want to find myself in a close-quarter brawl with a half-giant or even a goblin with enchanted arms.” To be frank, Ming would not want to be in spell range of most people with a wand either, given the trigger-happy nature of several of his year mates. But frankness is hardly something to be said amongst polite company.
Another small pause.
“Regardless,” Ming continued with just the slightest hint of contempt in his voice, his distaste for the issue made clear. “There will always be rabble-rousers keen to steal the spotlight. And right or wrong, giving them the time of day would only just help their quest of self-aggrandizement.”

Regina's face remained impassive, only giving the slightest of nods as an acknowledgement. If she was surprised by the Slytherin's foreign name despite his perfect accent, she did not show. Her private tutor's prior-to-Hogwarts lessons about the various continents beyond Europe immediately came to mind, and Regina remembered how the naming system were supposed to be quite different in Asia--their given name came second instead of the family name. As someone who respected proper etiquette, she wouldn't make a fool out herself like so many others and address the boy wrongly.Interacting with @Hui Ming
"Interesting. You have an excellent articulation for someone who is not entirely British...Hui," The young aristocrat praised, her head titled slightly to the side.
Orchid eyes shone with curiosity--Hui Ming seemed like an ordinary wizard at first glance, but she was smart enough to not allow the appearance to deceive. He was definitely polite and well-mannered--which made him pleasant to interact with, at the very least--but he made no recognition of Regina's family name nor did he seem to be familiar with wizarding newspaper. Hui Ming was most likely a first year then, Regina presumed. She noticed how he did not jump at the chance to defend either side of the story, and this could also mean he was neither a Pureblood nor a Half-blood, despite being at ease on the outside with the magic environment around him. Regina's lips twitched into an almost-smirk as she came to a silent conclusion, leaning forward to showcase her interest.
A Muggleborn in the House of Snakes. How quaint.
Normally, she would never bother to conversate with anyone--and certainly not over something as trivial as controversy stirred up in the news article--but the contempted tone in Hui's voice and the way his eyes were hardened had her wanting to incite a passionate reaction out of him. Emotions were so easy to manipulate if you hit just the right nerve. How easy would it be to break down that indifference?
"You've also raised a very good point. Indeed, what is considered a fair battle?" Regina spoke with a little lilt even though she kept her tone neutral. "Indeed, why should we entertain these simple-minded fools with the attention they so desperately want? Yet, even you cannot deny that blood purity is an ongoing problem that has been present in the Wizarding World for many years."
While the House of Miller didn't engage in acts of discrimination like so many other purists, they did believe in the idea that wizard with Muggle blood simply had less potential than Purebloods, and it was with this mindset that Regina had been raised with since she was little. The raven-haired Gryffindor found it amusing, borderline ridiculous, that anyone would so boldly claim otherwise.
"What exactly has driven Half-bloods and Muggleborns, even Half-breeds, to retaliate so strongly against common sense?" Regina raised her arms, gesturing to the air around them as if what she spoke was the most natural thing in the world. It should be. "Many would say insecurities, others would say jealousy, or perhaps the desire to feel worthy of the gift of magic. But do you know what I believe, Hui?"
She propped her elbows on the table, lacing her fingers together and resting her chin on her hands, regarding the Snake in front of her with a disdainful glint in her orchid hues. It was time to poke the dragon and confirm her theory.
"I believe that they are afraid. They are afraid of things they cannot understand, afraid of things unknown...afraid of what Purebloods can do that they cannot. Wouldn't you agree?"

Extressia has mixed feelings about breakfast in the big hall. For one thing, the rowdiness of the hall made her really nervous, and she was shy about her fellow Gryffindor, she haven't talked much to them since she was nervous about chaotic they could respond. Though, it was nice to eat with people who were full of energy, as it was funny seeing the argument and laughter around. She liked the social atmosphere, somehow it was comforting to hear a bunch of people shouting at their throats. So she was questioning getting breakfast and eating at her dorm or eating there. Finally, the more extroverted side of her won the argument and she headed toward the big hall.
As she come to get her breakfast, she found herself walking past two individuals, one of them was a purple-eyes girl and a boy with glasses when the girl said:
"Pureblood? I'm not sure what they talking about, but why did I just butted in!? Why Extressia." she thought.
"Hey, can you tell me what you are talking about?" If she leaves, it will be really awkward so might try to understand whatever they talking about.

Ming raised a questioning eyebrow at her comment about his articulation. Was that meant to be a backhanded compliment? Or simply just a well-intentioned comment?
As the upper-year continued with her thoughts it became evident that she had spent most of her life in the magical world. Or rather, perhaps it would be more accurate to say that she spent her time exclusively in the wizarding community. Perhaps, if he felt charitable, he could explain to this magical that the world did not revolve around magic: that there were many non-wizards and children on mundanes, Hogwarts students even, who would prefer not to engage with magicals and the mess that magic brought into the world.
But he did not. Her last words had irked him severely. Not that he would ever admit it.
Yes, Ming could agree that nurture played a significant role in how a person turned out. That the right parents and the right environment shaped a person, determining if they were doomed to a life of mediocrity or if they had a chance at a good life. Ming could even agree that Purebloods, with their connections and experience, had an edge.....in wizarding society,
As Ming was about to set out a scathing response - perhaps bringing up trigger-happy @Hildegard Schneider - as an example of all that was wrong with the magical world, he was interrupted.
A pause, as Ming turned his head slowly over to the new voice. Another Gryffindor, it seemed. Well, at least they had managed several full sentences before being interrupted, and this interruption was not as bad as ....some he could name."Agree to what about Pureblood?"
"A believe," Ming said slowly and with exaggerated cool, his eyes trained on the newcomer. "That Miss Miller here was just expressing how the purebloods terrify lesser bloodlines with their impeccable magic."
It was perhaps an exaggeration of her stance. But then, her argument was absurd: was it not the purebloods who rallied against the werewolves for the dangers they pose, or against the giants for their magic resistance and brute strength? For the ability to do that which the Purebloods cannot?

OOC disclaimer: I, of course, do not agree completely with every aspect of Regina's views concerning blood purity. However, as her writer, I am compelled to portray her as characteristically as possible. Please do not associate her ideals with my irl ideals.
Irritation surged like a vicious serpent inside the young aristocrat's chest when her eyes snapped to the girl who had integrated herself into the conversation--another Gryffindor, standing there with an apprehensive smile like a bumbling fool, making a vein twitch with annoyance under Regina's eye even though she carefully kept her expression blank. She had been waiting for Hui's inevitable retort, enjoying the way he seemed to be glaring at her with distaste because of her taunt. Regina had been so close to drawing out a reaction out of the first-year Slytherin, when the stranger had so blatantly interrupted and ruined all of her effort. She had half a mind to throw a snarky response to chase the other Lion away.Interacting with @Hui Ming | @Exstressia Garren Leo
Typical Gryffindor. How infuriating. Why was I sorted into this House again?
Purple eyes shifted back towards the Snake sitting across from her, an immense feeling of amusement mixed with triumph replacing the initial irritation at once. So she had managed to strike a nerve, after all."A believe, that Miss Miller here was just expressing how the purebloods terrify lesser bloodlines with their impeccable magic."
This was going to be quite a debate, indeed.
"Why, I appreciate the compliment, Hui. Truly, you did not need to point out the obvious," The raven-haired Gryffindor said with the slightest smirk on her lips, one hand nonchalantly brushing off an invisible speck of dust off her shoulder in a display of deliberate arrogance. She wasn't a fool, she knew perfectly well that Hui had meant it as a scorn. But she had learnt from an early age--that was what having an older sister who would constantly antagonise you would do--that the best way to answer to mockery was with mockery itself.
Regina's barely there smirk disappeared as quickly as it came when she focused her attention back to the reluctant Lion and the bespectacled Snake, not bothering to humour them with anything else than a cold sneer.
"Muggleborns have diluted our blood for hundreds of years. While I cannot care less about the caste system, I do however resent them for including their own cultural views and watering down old Pureblood traditions in the process. Those who are not born into purist families do not understand the severity of this, and if we retaliate, we are simply regarded as the disdainful Pureblood supremacists with...evil ideals."
But Regina didn't expect these two to fully comprehend this fact. Muggleborn and Half-blood elitists had never truly taken any argument of the opposing side into consideration, and if any Pureblood had voiced their opinion as strongly and publicly as the wizard in The Daily Prophet had, then they would be seen as a potential dangerous supporter of the Dark. How very demeaning. Regina respected those who were powerful enough to stand at the same level as a Pureblood wizard, but she would never see any lesser bloodline in anything but a negative light if they did not give Pureblood traditions and prestige the same amount of deference. They do not understand what it feels like to question their own stance in the world, knowing that one day, their blood would die out along with their heritage.
"Furthermore, you cannot expect me, who have been conceived from a long line of blood purists, to simply believe that wizards with Muggle or Giant blood know more about the true extent of magic than us."
The notion was simply ridiculous. Regina's ancestors would be rolling in their graves if one of their descendant would entertain such views. She could forgive the Slytherin boy for being ignorant of purist ideals and honour as he had not been raised in the wizarding world and had not been extensively taught about wizarding history, but the young aristocrat would not hesitate to shut down his less than savourable opinions of her in a matter of seconds.

"Hey thats..that...uh" Extressia didn't know how to call it. But she knew this opinion was wrong, it was like the black and white divide her old school would talk about except with blood purity, and so she knew it was wrong. But she wanted to please or at least be neutral with her, she felt so indecisive and nervous. To be neutral or to fight, it was clear a hard choice in Extressia's character would have to be made. She tried to think of the most neutral she could be.
She point toward at Regina, and as confidently as she could, which turn out was a lot, she talk:
"I don't think none of us know what magic capable of. Sure pure-blood have more experience than half-blood or muggle-born, but many thing can be learned from magic still even today. And pure-blood may have the talent, but if they don't work with that talent, it goes to waste and maybe a hard-working muggle-born who work and learn with their sweat and tear can beat them. Talent can only can get you so far, and you look like you have a lot of talent. And besides, wasn't Harry Potter from what I heard was a half-blood, and he became a great maybe the best wizard?"
She questioned, hoping for not an entirely mean response. She wanted to be cool with both of her new acquittances as they seem so elegant and royal, like they knew what they were doing in the world.

Ming had braced for an acid reply, but Miller's retort was.... appropriate, overall. Reasonably graceful handling of what was a rather pointed comment. Despite her obvious shortcomings, he would give her credit where credit was due.
The Slytherin blinked at the mention of losing traditions and cultural identity. it was a different asinine argument of the superiority of blood based on an arbitrary metric like magical fluency, or of the idea of wizard-kin being stronger than halfbreeds while halfbreeds were somehow more dangerous. No, the idea of British wizards being a separate identity from British mundanes, with this own roots and culture and history made a scary amount of sense, and something that Ming could not dismiss out of hand. It would give some rationale to why blood purity sentiment sustained despite the obvious attempts to stamp it out.
"Hmm." A thoughtful hum. he would need to process this later, and read up on it, if literature existed. Still, he let Miller blather on about the importance of blood to magical casting, and more of her ill-formed ideas. They were not worth engaging with, not like this one.
And then the other girl, who had yet to introduce herself - the rudeness of some poeple! - went and completely missed the argument. Instead, she mentioned a Harry Potter, and something about practising overcoming natural talent. It w2as an odd argument, ill-crafted, and one Ming did not fully understand.
Was she saying that this Harry Potter fellow tirelessly trained his magic day and night, and overcame every pureblood scholar? Surely not, for then Ming would have heard of him, and he had not. Instead, he directed his own question at Miller.
"And what, pray tell, are these traditions and cultures that you're losing out on? Is it not accurate to say that Dark Lords and wizard wars do more damage to wizard populations and culture than the dilution of your heritage?"
The curtains fell. And the silence was deafening
