Broom Racing Interschool vs Mahoutokoro Summer 2025

BROOM RACING - CASTELOBRUXO | BEAUXBÂTONS | UAGADOU vs MAHOUTOKORO - SUMMER 2025
Date: August 23rd | Time: Morning | Weather: Windy, humid | Moderator: @Alyss Gilmour

ROUND ZERO
The air around the track itself sat heavy, like a blanket of expected moisture. As bad as the humidity was, there was thankfully a breeze that cut through the atmosphere, allowing Alyss some relief as she took a moment to gather herself. Her very first race— at least, very first race that she wasn’t racing in. It was a big day for her, but also for the competitors. She didn’t need to worry about slipping from the broomstick, over and over. Alyss wasn’t here for that, today. No, today she was here to be the link between the racers and the crowd.

“Hello, hello, everyone! Welcome to the first race of the summer games!” Alyss paused, smiling. She had been looking forward to this moment for quite some time. “Please join me in applause for the racers this morning. Today we have the Interschool team, made up of racers from Castelobruxo, Beauxbâtons, and Uagadou.” Alyss ceased her words for a moment, allowing for the racers to greet the crowd and vice versa. “Competing against them is the team from Mahoutokoro!” Once again, the Slytherin gave them all the moment they deserved. The track today was full of surprises, and you could bet Alyss was looking forward to the fun they would all experience.

“Racers… On your marks, get set… GO.” She spoke the words that every racer prepared for, the words that began the most exhilarating and memorable moments. The race was on.

A note to all players: The word count minimum is 50 words. The next deadline to post and submit strategy is 120 hours from the time this is posted. You must include in your first post (and preferably all posts) any active abilities, your character's stats (without broom, you can also include the stats with broom but they must be clearly separated), and your character's chosen broom and its effects. Failure to include your chosen broom (that is also in your locked inventory) will have you automatically defaulted to a school broom. In your first post of the game, please include your trunk post quoted from your encyclopedia. Do not simply link it, it must be quoted completely for archive purposes.

Broom Racing Interschool vs Mahoutokoro Summer 2025
[quote]
iNPC Summer Races: Brooms

It has been brought to our attention that many participants in the Summer Races did not believe that our locking of inventories would effect their choice in broom. Brooms were locked along with spells and potions during our inventory locking that took place on July 9th.

After deliberation, the Broom Racing Captains have voted to allow players to purchase and use brooms that were not present in their inventory at the time of inventory locking. This is under a few circumstances:

1. This broom must be in your inventory and declared in your first post of the race. These brooms must match.
2. If you do not declare a broom or do not post before the first deadline, you forfeit this opportunity and will default to riding a school broom.
3. This will not be a reoccurring event. During inventory locks, it is expected that you have already taken care of the items in your possession, including your broom.
4. This does not effect the deadline for either broom race. You still have 120 hours from the time the match was posted to post and declare the proper broom.

This was the first time that Chiaki had had the opportunity to race with a team of her own. Whilst meeting people internationally and seeing their strategies and tactics, or at least the way they approached a race, was most definitely interesting, Chiaki was grateful she could approach this game with some sort of a plan. Well, at least, she had some sort of a plan.

Whilst she wasn't much of a talkative person, she was the oldest and she presumed most experienced on her team, so she did feel some sense of leadership over the group. "We can do this, guys," she addressed the team with a smile. "Just remember the training, and we'll certainly win."

With that, Chiaki readied herself for the race, waiting for the countdown for the game to begin.

With such a turbulent home life, Chiaki always longed for a sense of calm in her life, away from the shouts and yells of her seemingly always infuriated parents. Upon arriving at Mahoutokoro, she took it upon herself to never make anyone feel the way she did at home. Ever since she stepped foot in the school, knowing that she wouldn't be hearing her parents shouting and yelling, she felt instantly at ease.
When Chiaki started to make friends at Mahoutokoro, she portrayed a happy and bubbly, yet somewhat soothing or calming exterior so her brain would not stray to her parents' fighting. Each of Chiaki's friends reported that they instantly felt calmer when they were around her. Any anger or built up pressure beneath the surface of them was relieved when they would even be simply near her. This attracted many new friends to her. As she quickly befriended two Quidditch players and followed them around like a puppy to their practices, she would be reported to put the team at ease, epecially before a big match.
However, playing Quidditch was never much of Chiaki's interest. There was too much chaos, too many things happening at once. Broom racing was much more her style. There was only one clear objective, and that was to win. Even if that required a little bending of the rules. But before a race, they would never be so nervous as all the fliers that came before her would warn her about. Many would always around her before a race, trying to absorb some of the calm energy she released unknowingly. As soon as she would fly ahead, however, the calm they felt instantly begin to disappear.
However, it was only truly noticeable when Mahoutokoro was the host of a spectularly large fight between several students. Chiaki wasn't aware of the violence occuring in the grounds, so she observed through a window what all the fuss and bother was about. Instead, she was horrified by the brutal punches and kicks that were being thrown. However, as soon as she appeared in person, the fighting died down. Rage could still be seen in the fighters' eyes, but they were no longer fighting. And Chiaki had managed to stop it.
Everybody knew then that Chiaki's presence was... special. Something about the chaos and turbulence from her past meant that she was able to bring the sense of calm that was much needed by many students, and even some of the teachers on occasion.

Cat's Grace:
Reducio
Chiaki's ability to be stealthy came even before she was born. Her mother wasn't even aware she was pregnant with Chiaki until the second trimester, when she started showing symptoms. And then, even after birth, Chiaki had an innate ability to sneak around. She would regularly manage to escape the house when her parents were arguing, and arrive at her grandparents' via bus (that she had managed to sneak aboard). If her parents began to shout when she was in the room, she was easily able to sneak out (though due to the loud yelling it wasn't the most difficult).
After her grandparents' tragic passing in a car accident, Chiaki found that she was no longer able to escape to theirs when things became loud and violent at home. As a result, every time her parents fought for three weeks, she would climb from her bedroom window and run around her small seaside town, looking for a place to hide. And she managed to get pretty far several times. She could easily slip ino buildings or sites that she didn't realise she couldn't be in, and then be gone just as quickly before anybody noticed. Some of her favourite hiding spots were tucked away in overgrown corners of old or run down buildings that she had no business being in, but was also never caught in. There had been one occassion that she thought that she needed to run, but when the guards appraoched, somehow she managed to get away undetected. That was the closest she'd been to serious trouble, but it didn't stop her from returning to that spot.
This habit of sneaking about was just something that she couldn't shake when she arrived at Mahoutokoro. If noticed, people would comment how she skulked around like a cat in the background of almost every situation. Howeverhen she wasn't actively being her bubbly and cheerful self, she very easily blended into the background. Maybe it was because she was surprisingly short, or just wasn't the most noticeable when she wasn't speaking. This allowed her to get away with several midnight scrapes, especially when she would have her private midnight flying sessions with Hiro and Ayako and try to beat her own time of the fastest lap around the school on a broom. There was something soothing about the cold night air, and something thrilling about barely escaping serious trouble, whether it be at school or at the chaos which ought to be known as home.

Evasive Maneuvers:
Reducio
As Chiaki's third year at Mahoutokoro quickly approached, she had already gotten more involved with the school and its activities. Firstly, she'd managed to make her mark on the school's broom racing team, pushing her way forwards and making sure to further her abilities, especially when it came to ducking, weaving and dodging around objects as she pushed to fly at faster and faster speeds. Furthermore, she'd been working on bettering herself and abilities after the Hexwizard Tournament, realising just how out of her depth she had been when she had competed. Facing all of those older students had been absolutely terrifying, and she didn't enjoy feeling so unprepared.
Naturally stealthy and gifted with a feline-like ability to dodge and duck, it only took motivation and dedication for Chiaki to be able to improve her skills. On New Year, she made a promise to herself that by the end of the year, she would have worked on improving her abilities, especially when it came to dodging things, and that included people.
She'd use different exercises, employing her friends' help, such as having them throw pillows at her and have her dodge them, or tennis balls if she was on her broom. But that could only do so much. It wouldn't be the same as ducking branches or weaving through trees. So she made a schedule for herself, and pushed herself to stick to it. Every day, working on the smaller exercises, and twice a week, she would do a lap around the track. The repetition would help her, at least for now, with familiarising herself and allowing her prepare dodges and move out of the way, increasing her times as she shot around the racecourse.
At home during the holidays, she would also continue to work on this newfound talent that she was leaning into and continuously working to perfect. Slipping in and out, moving around things, she would work these exercises into her everyday routine, especially when she was just doing her standard chores. It allowed her to feel more accomplished as she worked on the menial tasks whilst her parents were out of the house.
Finally, she decided to test herself, to see if she was any closer to achieving her goal. She had her friends set up a course she could run through, setting a time in her head she wanted to complete it in. It began on the ground, to test her abilities normally, and then she would complete another on her broom, to make sure the abilities were evenly matched. Whilst her time wasn't as fast as she would've hoped, she had definitely improved, and her newly developed evasive skills were definitely something for her to be proud of.

Muggle Condition:
Reducio
Chiaki had always known her parents were both the sportier type of people, and they had often encouraged a healthy yet competitive spirit within her, which had led to quickly find sports at Mahoutokoro that she loved. However, it wasn't until they separated and she had begun going back and forth between their homes that she would truly realise the extent of this.

Her father had always been a bit of a sports fiend, and he had always encouraged Chiaki to play a sport, often regaling her with tales of his time as a competitive tennis player during his high school years. Whilst, as a muggle, he didn't fully understand the concept of wizarding world sports like broom racing or quidditch, he understood that she was competing, and that was enough for him to insist on keeping her skills sharp.

Every other day on the weeks she would stay with her father, he would drag her out to the public tennis courts at 8am sharp and make her play tennis with him. They'd always start out with simple exercises to test her accuracy, like trying to hit a tennis ball at a target, before moving on to playing an actual game. As much as she'd always grumble about the early morning starts, especially during her school holidays, she grew to enjoy the matches and treasured the time before it was over. The first time she had to switch to her mother's, her dad had only one request of her - to ensure she kept up her training, and she promised to do her very best to uphold that ask.

At her mother's house, Chiaki wasn't exactly sure how she was going to be able to keep up her promise to her father, but her problem luckily found a fairly easy solution through her mother, who had, after the divorce, seemingly taken an interest in the sport of archery. Whilst her mother would visit the local archery range, she would use the time to sneak out to local tennis courts and set up her own drills to keep up her abilities that she had carefully honed. It wasn't long before Chiaki's mother caught wind of this, however, and thus decided to bring her along to the range to pass along her newfound love of archery. Initially, archery was not one her strong suits, however after a year of practise when staying with her mother, Chiaki found that she had only gotten better with her aim, and, even more helpfully, these accuracy skills were transferable to her tennis matches with her father and for her sport at school.

The past year, when not at Mahoutokoro, Chiaki only found her fondness for muggle sports growing and growing as she spent more time at the tennis courts and the archery range, honing these newfound skills she had developed. Whilst they were not perfect just yet, she was confident in her abilities, and knew that this would all prove worth it in the end.

Fearless:
Reducio
From the scared, timid kid she had used to be in her earlier years at Mahoutokoro, Chiaki had grown and matured a lot more in that time. The slight tremble in her voice whenever she spoke up had long since vanished, and she could confidently stand her ground against others that argued back. It may have been the small things, but anyone that had known Chiaki long enough couldn't deny the change in her demeanour from her childhood.

She'd spent so long feeling worried or scared of upsetting others, overthinking the consequences of what could have happened, that she had gotten lost in her own head too many times, and in all honesty, it was something she disliked strongly. This feeling, the anxiety, it kept her docile and quiet, and if she had learnt anything during her time at Mahoutokoro, it was that staying quiet often didn't help produce the same results as when you spoke up against any wrongs or injustice that you witnessed.

Of course, this want for some newfound bravery was much easier said than done. But Chiaki had always heard the saying 'fake it until you make it', and she had to internalise this. It had not been quick progress by any means - she had known this was a quality of hers that she had to keep working on, even if it would take her years to reach the end goal.

And it had taken years. Years of small yet momentous efforts, of not taking the easy decision to back away, run and hide, or lie to pacify a situation; these may have seemed insignificant to others, but to Chiaki, they had been a very big deal when she had made those choices. It marked a point of conscious change for her - she was not about to roll over and be docile once again. Wanting peace didn't mean she had to simply be walked over.

By her fifth year, Chiaki finally felt as if she could see the results of years of trying to put herself out there. The nerves were practically no longer an issue, and she felt no more anxiety towards anything or anyone - however formidable they seemed, she knew that she didn't have to be scared of them. There would still be times where the doubt would creep into her mind, but she had trained herself to ignore it, and persevere regardless. After all, overcoming any initial fear was the most difficult step, and even though it had taken some time, she had finally managed to do that, and her life was better for it.

Kiyoshi had a frown marring his expression. It was a windy day, and for a big boy like him who was already a little bit much for a normal broomstick, it was a challenge.

Oh well, if the winds threw him off his broom, he'd have one hell of a rollercoaster ride.

A gruff not at the moderator, and then at Hiroi-senpai's advice. Training. Yes. That was important.
It would not do to snap and beat someone to the verge of hospitalization again.
...Especially not with so many witnesses.

I remember the mountains and forests of Iida growing up as if they were a part of me. In many ways, maybe they were more my friends than those around me. Growing up, I felt like I was meant to be among those towering peaks, not confined to the small spaces of our village. After all, I knew was that I was different—stronger, taller, and more resilient than everyone around me.

As a child, I was a wild, uncontrollable thing, all instinct and no thought. I would climb trees until the branches snapped under my weight, and I'd dare other kids to sneak into the mountains with me. I loved the fear in their eyes when they looked at me, I think. Mother would scold me often, telling me to be kind and gentle, but it was hard to listen when my blood was pumping and screaming for me to be as fierce as was my due.

I recall one time when I fell from a tree. I must have been around seven. The branch broke, and I landed badly and it hurt terribly to even try and stand. Instead of crying, I felt a burning anger consume me. How dare my body betray me? I dragged myself back home, determined not to show weakness. By the time I arrived, the pain had vanished, and my mother found no injury. It was as if my body had healed itself. She looked at me with a mix of worry and wonder, but she never said a word about it again.

Mother was something else. For all the trouble I gave her, she was patient with me and taught me to control myself, to be respectful and humble. She'd remind me time and time again that strength wasn't just about physical power but about kindness and compassion. It wasn't easy; my instincts often got the better of me many times before I started to understand properly.

People in the village whisper about my father, even now. Some said he was a bandit, others a giant from the mountains, and a few even claimed he was an Oni. My mother never confirmed or denied any of it. She just smiled and told me that I was loved, no matter what.

As I grew older, I began to realize that I wasn't fully human. My size and strength were just the beginning. There was something deeper inside of me that set me apart. My blood and my instincts -- it is difficult to put into words, language is not quite enough to describe it well -- sing to me, I suppose would be the closest thing I can get to. It demands action, and respect, and entertainment, in ways that would shame me to put into words.

But I know now that I am more than my blood. I am strong, and not just a slave to my feelings; I know how to be strong, and how to think. Mother taught me. But even still, sometimes I cannot help but feel like an outsider looking in. The world seems so small, and people so alien in how they think and act. But people are people are people, and should be respected, no matter how much you disagree with them.

Maybe Mahoutokoro will be better, and people there will seem less alien than those from my home? Here's to hoping.

Appearance:
Towering over his peers and even some adults at 5'7", Kiyoshi stands out among the students. Something about him exudes an air of intensity- perhaps his short-cropped, military-style hair; his muscular build; or his deep-set appearance. Or perhaps it was just his face -- even at the tender age of 11 he had had a slightly heavier brow, a more defined jawlone that made him look almost an adult.

He has the typical warm complexion of the Japanese people, though many natives might notice a slightly darker shade to his coloring. Kiyoshi has disproportionately large, calloused hands, which have seen rough use in climbing trees and roughhousing, capable of surprising feats of strength. However, for all their ability, his hands are also incredibly clumsy when handling the myriad of common everyday items that are designed for human proportions.

His clothing is simple and practical and, outside of the school uniform, nothing that would ever catch the eye. Keen observers may notice that he has a preference for loose-fitting clothes that are repurposed adult clothes rather than ones specifically tailored for him. He also often wore simple bracelets made of rope on his wrists; simple and unassuming to many, but a deeply cherished personal gift to Kiyoshi.

Rules are, like so much else in the world, not static.

Sure, they are important. Vital, even. Without some guidelines, how would you know what is good and what isn't, after all? But for someone like Kiyoshi, who often has his blood singing to him of sweet glorious violence in one ear, and the words and teachings of his beloved mother ringing in the other, that doesn't quite work. Traditional rules and guidelines, like much of the everyday things in his life, seem to be ill-fitting to Kiyoshi. The right size but the wrong fit, with the wrong proportions and the wrong texture.

And like so much else in his life, that meant that Kiyoshi needed something just a little bit more....custom to suit his needs.

It wasn't cheating. Not really. Just a 'creative' interpretation of the rules, to allow him more freedom of expression and to be himself. If they were really serious about not wanting him to do the things he wanted to do, then surely the adults would have made it harder to get away with it after all.

Many would say that his expression of freedom was much too violent, the few times that he truly let himself loose from the tight chains of discipline that he held himself beholden to. And to them he would say -- well. Nothing, actually. For he would only have to explain himself if he got caught. And why deal with the whole song and dance of getting into trouble when he could simply choose to... Not.

Not because he cared overly much. He was hardly afraid to stand behind his choices. and would not lose a wink of sleep over taking actions that others believed were outside the rules, foul, or even under-handed.

But being caught meant a lot of paperwork and a lot of whining from people who would be better served at the business end of his fist. And it was hardly worth the grinding it would take on his patience to have him control himself while some self-important, unimaginative weakling told him how he should be living his life.

After all, there are no rules to keep people from cheating in real life, and what rules there were could be bent easily enough from what he had seen. So, why should he live bound by such rules during school where he should be preparing for real life?

Hikari wasn't quite sure how he had ended up out in the open air, clutching a broom in his hand like his life depended on it. He should've been at home, sketching, surrounded by paper and silence, not by people and violence, by voices rising like the wind, by chaos veiled as competition.

Well, no.. that wouldn't be quite true. He knew exactly what he was doing here.

It had started with Hayato. His younger brother had hounded after him for days to get him into some game, some sort of physical activity. And then Tomoe came along, wide eyes and innocent smiles, and had suggested racing. Well, Hikari had never been particularly good at denying them. It was much easier to turn down strangers than the people he had spent his whole life with.

Which brought him to today. And people he was barely getting to know. And then the girl- who he had learnt, hadn't always been one. Hikari had to admit he tolerated her better than the others. She was confident. Steady. Spoke with a kind of confidence Hikari wondered he;d ever have. Training, indeed, he thought, listening attentively to her words. All his hard work had culminated to this day.

Still, he would give it his all. Hikari didn't do things halfway- not sketches, or schoolwork, and definitely not flying games he did not ask to be a part of.

When growing up with a younger brother who seemed to have trouble following him around everywhere, one often learnt to avoid potential catastrophes in the nick of time. A flower pot about to fall, a dirt mark on the floor that hadn't been there the previous day, Hayato stealing his food.

Besides Hikari had been an observer since he was a child. Less talking, more listening, looking, watching; all of these had been ingrained in him as the oldest son of the Fujimoto family.

And he noticed things.

And it was not in the "he has good instincts" kind of manner. No, he really noticed, and often, he found himself studying it all. His father's crooked tie after returning from work, the quill on the professor's desk, angled a few degrees off the remaining, a book which had been placed with the wrong series. He had an eye trained like a lens, sharp, precise and observing.

Then, of course, came his art.

Hikari saw the world in brushstrokes. People looked and moved on, but Hikari stayed, lingered, because in painting, everything was details. Six years of painting had trained him, sharpened him to look, to study, to remember. To paint well, one had to look closely. The soft colors, the hidden shadows, to spot the pink behind the clouds or the various shades of orange and red of the sun.

Now, it had become a habit.

His eyes were always moving, analyzing, every perfection, every imperfection, shapes, lines, colors, textures. The world was a canvas, full of flaws and beauty. And there was always something worth recording. Hidden details which were often overlooked by an untrained eye but Hikari never missed them: The slight asymmetry in a person's eyes or smile, fabric folds around knees, elbows or collars, different shades of shadows besides black and grey, purples, pinks, blues and even reds.

This little developed skill helped Hikari quite often. One of the best things about it was that he rarely misplaced his things. Even in the rare occasions where he did not feel like cleaning after himself, his room was more of an organised mess compared to his brother who could never find anything in his room when he needed to.

There was a kind of safety in that, he thought. The world was forever shifting, living. But as long as he kept watching, really watching, nothing could catch him by surprise.

Maria stared at herself in the mirror with absolute disgust. Her naturally flawless skin, pretty and clear as ever taunted her. She picked up her make and set it down again. A low growl gurgling in her throat. For the last month she never dared to let this face see the light of day, preferring to cover it in her now familiar tones of white and black. It reminded her of everything. She looked at her wardrobe placed carefully on a rack beside her hammock. She would leave behind her black dress, platform shoes, and chokers that looked like they were more torture for her to wear than anything else. All of it could be a hazard on the track and well, as far as the makeup, she didn’t hate her face enough to experience what winds at high speeds does to lipstick.

Dressed in her Mahoutokoro racing outfit, she took one more look at the girl in the mirror, those soft features, that obnoxiously beautiful and winsome visage and spat at it. She said a curse, grabbed her wand and broom and stormed out of the tent.

By the time she made it to the track she was pleasantly surprised that she wasn’t the last on her team to arrive. She didn’t need to guess who was bringing up the rear. She made it just in time for Chiaki to give what might be a passable pep talk and mounted her broom with a nod and a small smile to her teammates, trying to keep the sudden nerves at bay.

One of the most important things in as Chinese culture is appearance. Even if you are poor, you are under constant pressure to go into debt just so you can look like you have money. Cars, clothes, jewelry, hair, makeup, bags, shoes. Anything that makes you look like a million bucks even if you have nothing. Now if you actually have money, this means to differentiate yourself you must go above and beyond to show people what real wealth looks like. Designer bags? No. You buy the designer. Top make up brands? No, you own a cosmetic juggernaut.

This is the social pressure and standard Maria Leung, the daughter of a wealthy Portuguese/Macanese family, is born into. From the moment she entered the world she was made an accessory to her mom like a handbag. As she grew up, she learned a person’s worth is in the fear and envy of others. When she reached adolescence she bonded with her mother over a shared love of shopping and getting the best at maximum price, not at a bargain like poor people.

Maria carries all of this with her in her time in Mahoutokoro. If she doesn’t feel like the prettiest girl in the room, the next day she is. If she has a bad hair day -which is never- she turns it into the “next big thing.” It doesn’t matter what she is wearing it always must look the best on her. She wakes up early in the mornings to enjoy her tea and to admire her own youthful complexion in the mirror, an effect aided by her western and Chinese heritage.

From looks to attitude, Maria is groomed to give the best impression or face the overwhelming ire of her mother. Though this facade slips when she feels insulted or slighted, she is always dutiful to give the most polite, well educated and pretty responses. This effect has given her an often other-worldly and distracting air about her that she takes pride in that separates her from the normal people.

Maria knows she’s pretty and uses it to full advantage whenever she has the opportunity. Whether to try to charm her way out of conflict, intimidate others who are more self conscious or simply enjoy the attention of others. When there is a way to curry favor or influence through her presence, she does her ancestors proud and her mother prouder.

(403 words)

The Muggle Condition
Reducio
A majority of Maria’s life has been magic less. With a father who is a squib and a mother who is a muggle. Her life was far from difficult as she always got everything she ever wanted but it also comes with a rather unconventional problem solving skills at least from the perspective of the magic world. An understanding that you can put two things together and make something useful without the need for magic or potions.

Maria didn’t always think this was a strength when she first entered Mahoutokoro a year ago. In fact, living life as a muggle put her at a severe disadvantage in the education system. However, it did force her to approach problems in different ways. Overcoming obstacles that would stump her classmates. A locked door, for example, if it wasn’t enchanted, could always be jimmied. Not that she was ever known to force open a door before! She would of course “never” do that.

Another habit she had was always to carry around a pencil and a solid ruler. Not for doing homework, that part sucked. But one could accomplish many tasks with a little leverage or by carefully, ever so carefully move objects without creating evidence. Not that she was ever known to move a classmates books so she could see even just the corner of an answer. She would “never” cheat.

While Macgyvering cheating implements and brute forcing doors isn’t necessarily exclusive to muggles, it is the habits brought by a life of not having magic.

Some more examples of muggle think is her clever use of makeup to hide unsightly scars and blemishes. He rescue one of her classmates from embarrassment when the student was pranked and she got covered in a nasty looking rash. The girl was too embarrassed to go to the hospital wing, so Maria got to work with a clever use of makeup to hide the rash well enough that the girl felt comfortable making her way to the nurse to get it remedied. She also would “never” use her makeup abilities to impersonate other people well enough to trick others in place of a polyjuice potion. That definitely never came up.

When faced with difficult circumstances and situations, Maria uses her muggle upbringing to find ways to overcome and not as a means to feel lesser than or to be stifled in any way. The muggle condition is her aid not her hindrance.

If there was one thing Katsuro knew about himself and his life, is that Broom Racing was in his blood and it was part of his family legacy to be good at it. This acknowledgment brought him both, a sense of pride for being part of the team and having a chance to prove himself, and a pressure that was threatening to crash him into the ground before the race even start.

He had been training to become a racer since the first time he had been allowed to fly a broom. Now was the moment for him to show what he was really worthy for, and he could only hope to not have to face the consequences of a bad performance.

He arrived the starting line, dressed in the Mahoutoko racing colours and with his loyal broom by his side. He nodded politely to all his teammates before getting into position to start flying, "There's no other option but winning." He calmly replied to Chiaki, his eyes already focused on the path ahead.

Year 1: Cat's Grace
Reducio
Born into an old pure-blood family with aristocratic customs, Katsuro was raised and educated to become a graceful, gentle, and polite boy. His parents and relatives had high expectations of him and his siblings, so his upbringing was full of strict demands that he always had to meet in order to obtain his rewards and gratifications. As long as he played by the book, he would have everything he wanted, those were the rules.

He was the second son of Diogo Souto and Mizuna Goto. Osamu Souto was his older brother, a fifteen-year-old boy, and Ryota Souto was the youngest, at seven. With two other brothers, the competition was always evident and manifested itself in his relationships with the family and among the three of them.

At times, for the young Katsuro, his family and siblings were too overwhelming, and he found himself, more than once, wishing he could remain invisible or unnoticed for a while. And over time, this became a skill that actually began to come more naturally to him. He learned how to become more quiet, be more observant and learn how to subtly extract himself from the conversations and how to slowly walk away from the room.

It didn’t take long for him to discover that this newfound ability to remain silent and imperceptible would also come in handy whenever he felt the need to sneak around the house. On several occasions, he would use it to sneak into the kitchen and find delicious treats and snacks right under the chefs’ noses, without being noticed. Sometimes, it was useful to stay hidden while playing hide-and-seek and eventually outsmarting his brothers and cousins. It was fun to watch them search for him until they finally had to give up and deal with all his pretensions. He always made sure to show them his best and smuggest face, of course!

This was a skill that was born out of necessity, but it soon became a very welcome and effective tool. Blending into the background became a way to stay safe and find a place of reprieve, to maintain control. Over time, it became more than just a way to find peace, it became a quiet power. This also helped him to begin to notice things that others didn't, like whispered conversations, being able to listen and observe when others thought to be alone, the subtle looks, the silent messages…

Year 2: Foulplay
Reducio
At the age of 12, Katsuro has already developed a natural ability to be exceptionally good at breaking rules and creating his own on his own terms. His talent for deception and deceit is not just a random event of fate, it didn’t happen by mere chance. It stems from a combination of personality, acquired skills, and the natural need to survive in the environment in which he was forced to grow up.
Katsuro Souto was born in a highly competitive family, his brothers and cousins were always elements of comparison and everyone was expected to have high expectations of doing their best and honoring the family name. Approval and praise from adults often came only with results, no matter the efforts taken to achieve it. Cheating was not seen as a moral failure, but as a tool to stay ahead and win the prize. Over time, he learned that being clever and winning mattered more than how he played the game, because the winner was always the one bringing the victory home not the one that played nicely. From a young age, he watched others stretch the truth or manipulate situations to their advantage, and instead of being taught to value fairness, he was told to admire their success instead.
It was also luck or destiny that endowed the second son of Diogo and Mizuna Souto with a sharp mind and made him an observant learner. These qualities helped him pay close attention to his surroundings, and the people around, allowing him to be able to think one, or several steps ahead. He observed and learned how the rules worked and were enforced, how to better find loopholes in them and adapt to the situations, how to notice when people stopped to pay the necessary attention and take the right opportunities for his benefit.
Another no less important characteristic that helps him pass unnoticed with his mischief and less noble plans, is his charisma and ability to act and pretend innocence. He understands how to deflect suspicion by acting confident, being friendly, and presenting himself as being helpful to others. He is a good and convincing liar and has no problem doing so, especially when it earns him more praise and gives him the opportunity to prove that he is better than his brothers or cousins.
It is extremely rewarding and exciting for young Katsuro to be able to outwit the system and his opponents, always finding the best ways to manipulate things in his favor, being able to shift the blame onto others and using his charm to avoid the bad consequences of his actions. A game doesn't necessarily have to be about winning, but it is definitely about not losing.

Maxi sniffed as he walked into the open air, wrinkling his nose when he sensed the humidity. Today would be his final international race during his school years, and very likely the last in his life, since he hadn’t made plans to go professional. Clutching his dear Starsweeper XXI in his hand, Maxi made up his mind to make the most of it.

Not having Cassie, Raphael, and Celine by his side felt strange, as they had been on the team and raced together in games like this for as long as he could remember. Yet stepping onto the track still felt being back home, and meeting fellow racers was always exciting. Maxi gave a cheerful nod to Javier, Jason, and Alemayehu, then turned to @Claire Ducasse, who reminded him of the first time he entered a race. “Good luck.” He said to her in their mother tongue, giving his junior an encouraging smile.

Maxi mounted his broom and took a deep breath. Time to enjoy the game. His final game.

WOOD EFFECTS
• Flavor: Will lose power if their owner lies to themselves. Will gain power when they are finally honest with themselves. A great anime-like moment for those that enjoy the genre.

CORE EFFECTS
• Flavor: Known to vibrate when Parseltongue is being spoken within hearing distance.
• 50% chance that this wand will vibrate if there is an unknown (stealth) individual in a thread. They are not revealed but the wand would serve as a warning that they are not alone.
• 5% chance to auto-dodge attacks (the wand makes a musical tone in instances of impending danger that serve as a warning). This does not break the 20% caps on auto-dodge.

At the time Maximilien was born, he was considered handsome. It was not really a surprise, though, since his parents were all extremely good looking. Mélanie Janvaque was one of the most gorgeous girls in class in her school days, and Vincent de Fostoncy was secretly had a crush on by many students. Honestly speaking, no one in the family wasn’t good looking — from Louis to Maximilien.

Successfully inherited his mother’s eye color and hair color, the boy was fairly good looking. He had good the straight nose of the de Fostoncy family, and thin, pink lips. His eyelashes were long, and were of brown color. His mother regarded him as a doll when he was sleeping. Actually, even if the boy’s awake, he was like a gorgeous statue.

When walking on the streets in Lyon, Maximilien was looked attentively by many strangers. They stopped when he and his father passed by, and pointed at them secretly. Sometimes the boy’s ears would catch a few words like “handsome” “good looking” “lovely”. He was young at that time, and did not really take these things seriously. However his father was glad. Glad that someone had praised his son.

Attending fancy balls played a large part in the family. Louis de Fostoncy, the current count, especially loved these kinds of activities. Taking the beautiful Madame de Fostoncy, the handsome Chevalier de Fostoncy, and the young de Fostoncy heir was just extremely agreeable, since whenever and wherever the family of four showed up, they would earn applause and praises. People admired the wealthy family, but especially, envied their beauty. They dragged the young heir near them, and examined him carefully, hoping to point some flaws on his face out. However, they failed. Maximilien was too lovely to find out a flaw. If you had to point something out, you might say that he’s a bit chubby — but he was still a good looking child. The old ladies especially loved this pretty boy. They talked with him for hours, even if the boy got bored.

By the time he was eleven, Maximilien had became even more handsome. He had mostly grew his chubby cheeks out, became taller, athletic built, and was always dressed in elegant dark colored clothes. The boy was still admired and envied by many others, and the future count of the de Fostoncy family was highly estimated.

Without a doubt, Maximilien de Fostoncy was always a lovely creature.

Growing up, Maximilien had always been a perfectionist. Being stubborn, he wanted everything to be the best — which he would not regret afterwards.

From the age of four, his grandfather forced him to stay inside the house and study spells and potions for the whole morning. His father was his mentor — and to his surprise, Maximilien did everything extremely well. One day Monsieur le Chevalier taught him a difficult potion, and within hours, Maximilien could revise the recipe correctly. Vincent was surprised. But what he did not know is, after he had gave the book to the young Maximilien and left, the boy copied the recipe for seven times. It was really long, but he still did it.

Upon the time he was accepted into Beauxbatons, Maximilien was hard working student. He loved Charms and Potions, as well as Defense Against the Dark Arts. Most of his classmates had seen this boy working alone late at night in his dormitory, and many of them had seen him practicing spells in an empty classroom. The library was nearly Maximilien’s second home — he did not have many friends, so he visited there a lot during weekends.

The boy wanted everything to be perfect. He studied hard, did physical exercises everyday, and kept a healthy diet. He was proud and stubborn, so it helped him to be perfect. Day by day, he continued to study in the library and his dorm. And as a result, he improved day by day.

He received seven Os in his examination. His grandfather and father was really glad, but they still lacked knowledge of how hard Maximilien had worked. Most things were perfect — and that’s exactly what Maximilien wanted to see. He was overjoyed to see his academic results, and the boy decided that he would even study harder afterwards. He wanted himself to be the best, though he had never spoken it out loud.

When it’s the summer before his second year, Maximilien spent tons of time reading in the library in the de Fodtoncy Estate. While his grandfather was busy showing off at friends’ houses, his father busy running the wine estate, and his mother busy visiting her own maiden family, Maximilien read, and learnt. He had briefly met his cousins for two days, and all they saw was the boy was reading whenever and wherever. Maximilien loved it, and decided to do everything well.

His knowledge of spells and potions were extending every moment. It’s no surprise that he had already became a perfectionist — because, Maximilien de Fostoncy was just born as one.

Summer. Summer was always agreeable for Maxi, and especially this one. Monsieur le Comte had accepted the Duke Springhall’s invitation for him staying over for July, and thus Maximilien arrived at the Springhall Heights as soon as his schoolyear ended in Beauxbatons. The Duke welcomed him warmly, and he soon won the old wizard’s favour - who agreed to give him some lessons on duelling.

We would skip the part of how Maxi won this special favour, as even the boy himself was quite ignorant of the reason. Maybe it was because of his fine etiquette, compared to Edmund and Lindsey - or it was simply because that the Duke desperately wished to teach some young wizards the art of combating magic. Maxi knew that Edmund was nowhere near the title of a duellist, and Lindsey was on her house Quidditch team, and the Duke wasn’t very into that - somehow he regarded duelling as “the only sport that’s worth participating”.

But anyways, everything started within a week he arrived. Maximilien began to visit the Duke’s personal studio daily at 10 o’clock in the morning, and showed up as the very last one for tea. Finding his interests in the ancient English books about duelling, Maxi was more than happy to expand his knowledge. He was a perfectionist and wished perfection in everything, after all. Practicing always came after simple reading. It would be countless times every day, when Maxi raised up his wand and uttered the incantation out. The Duke would watch over every single spell he casted at the dummies (the Duke Springhall did have one or two in his studio), and offered him some help. And then he would teach the young Frenchman some strategies and tactics, the latter found everything fascinating, including the stern looking old wizard himself.

But no. None of these were as fascinating - as grand as what happened the other day, when he was about to leave in a few days. It was just like every other morning in York, cloudy and a little bit rainy. Facing two dummies and having the old wizard closely watching, Maxi raised his wand up. “Flipendo!” he uttered in perfect English, which made the Duke’s knitted brows smoothed. As what both the old and the young had expected, one line of blue light flashed out directly from the point of Maximilien’s wand. It was perfect. Not the strongest version nor the most powerful one, but already ideal enough for a thirteen-year-old. Seeing the would almost certainly hit the dummy on the left, the Duke was about to say something, when -

It was all of a sudden, and it was unbelievable. But it was true. As true as he was named Maximilien René Pascal Jacques Vincent Louis de Fostoncy. The spell split in two and targeted both of the dummies. Both were knocked over, and Maximilien stood there with surprise, wand still raised up in the air. The Duke was just as silent as the boy was, sitting there motionlessly.

“Nice work, young man.” the old wizard finally started, nodding approvingly. “Few wizards can achieve that…only those who are truly talented…” Lowering his wand and stepping forward to right the knocked-over dummies, Maxi smiled at the old wizard. “Thank you, Monsieur le Duc.” he said softly, while slowly raising his wand up again at the dummies.

He utilized his left days in the Springhall Heights to practice and get tutorials from the Duke - who helped him to learn to control his split spell. Maximilien knew that a grander spell meant a higher chance of failure. So he had to practice hard, like what a true perfectionist would do. Day by day his skills improved. And although backfiring still happened occasionally, he was far more better than what he had done the very first day he when discovered his skill.

When he packed his things to leave for the Hogwarts Summer Camp on July 31st, it was raining outside. James Kingsleigh, the Duke’s clerk, offered to take him to the York train station, where he could set off for London. Maxi accepted this gratefully, and the two walked together silently in the rain, luggage in hand. James regretted not taking his wand with him, as they would only be able to conjure one umbrella using Maxi’s wand - instead of two, and Maxi shook his head. “I believe it’s alright, Mister Kingsleigh.” he smiled, while reaching for his wand. “Pluvia Velo.”

James watched the the young French boy conjuring two umbrellas and passing one to him in surprise. However, he remarked nothing. Just a simple, grateful nod, and the two continued their walk in the rain with two umbrellas. No one was going to get wet. The skill was useful - thought Maxi. Indeed.

What was exactly obsession? Maxi was longing to know the answer. He’d looked for it in his grandfather’s library, polled a few classmates for their opinions, and pondered it while wandering through his family’s wine estate. That was, until someone told him that he was prone to obsessions. It was certainly a helpful clue, now all he had to do was look through his hobbies and things that piqued his interest to figure out the answer.

Lovely ladies? No, that wasn’t supposed to be an obsession. Flowers? Erm, he didn’t do much gardening to be honest. Spellcasting? Perhaps, he’d been practicing diligently and eager to know more about the art of combating magic, but he had already left the duelling team. In terms of extracurricular activities, earlier that year, he had switched from the Beauxbatons duelling team to broom racing. At the beginning he thought it was nothing than a mere impulse, only because racing sounded like the perfect combination of broom and spells, both of which he didn't want to miss. His grandfather was entirely supportive (how honourable for his grandson to be recognised on the track, and just think of the renown and scholarship!), as was his father, though the latter was slightly concerned that his son wouldn't be as dedicated to spellcasting as he had been previously. Maxi reassured Vincent that this would not happen, and he devoted himself into training without wasting any time. He started small, riding and avoiding obstacles and attacks. Day by day he got better, learning from experienced teammates and actively engaging in team practices. And he was certainly achieving things - he could target opponents moving fast on brooms as if they were on their feet, and he could as well ride through the wind and remain unmoved. Maybe that’s just what obsession was.

Oh, and there’s writing. Maxi did not forget about his little interest of writing, whether it was a poem, a fantasy, or a novella. People could dismiss this pastime as whimsical, especially when they come across the nymphs and nightingales written on the parchment, but Maxi adored them. It played a significant part in his life, and he made sure that he could write at least two poems and a short fable every week, no matter how busy he was. When he returned home for summer, Maxi secretly presented his mother his latest work as a gift without letting his grandfather or father know (they wouldn't approve of him writing this because it's “useless”, he knew it). A story about a well-educated young lady who overcame all hurdles with tenacity and pursued her dream career as an artist, despite her family’s opposition. When Mélanie read it, she couldn’t help but shed tears because the protagonist resembled her a lot but ended up realising her drea, unlike her. Impressive, she told her son tenderly, you really have a knack for this, my dearest little Maximilien, and I love it so much. Maxi smiled upon his mother’s comment, feeling that everything was worth it. Nobody knew how hard he had worked on the novella - how many times had he revised it? Seven? Eight? And at least two times were thorough amendments. When he was finally satisfied with his work, he transcribed the whole story in neat handwriting on fresh parchments, which took another three days to finalise. Indeed, he sure had some talent in this and writing the story did offer him much joy, but the effort paid also played a big part in making the whole thing perfect. Maxi never regretted it taking up his free time though, he knew perfecting the present for his mother was all he really wanted. Was that, by any chance, some kind of obsession?

He thought about many things, things that had, no matter briefly or chronically, once occupied his mind. After days meditating on the subject, Maxi thought he could now answer it. To strive for perfection. Maybe that’s what obsession really meant.

Maxi had always been a swot.

From the time he could remember things he was into stories, or to be exact, fairytales and legends. First were the wizard novels and adventures found in his father’s studio — there weren’t many of them, but Maxi found great pleasure in reading them before he ever started his study in Beauxbatons. As soon as he enrolled he’d secretly borrow those muggle fairytales from his muggleborn classmates, and managed to read them when his grandfather was not around. Years passed, and Maxi was finally able to come to a conclusion out of this somehow fanatic passion — that, no matter who the main character was, be them wizard or muggle, a prince, princess, knight or a mere normal person, there was always something — or rather someone — that was never absent in such books.

Creatures.

Be it dragons or phoenixes, be it vampires or werewolves. They might be the ones that unfortunately fell in love with the princess at the same time as the prince, or might be some evil forces that tried to eat the knight in distress. Anyway, it seemed that they were inseparable from such stories, let it be muggle-ish or wizarding (only their forces in the wizarding stories might even be stronger to match the abilities of a wizard). Maxi’s interest in these beings was provoked.

He started to do research on these creatures. Being a wizard who was even able to meet these creatures in person if he was lucky enough (though it seemed now that he wasn’t that lucky, after all), it wasn’t difficult for him to gather relevant books and literature, and not before long he was able to absorb himself in the creatures’ world. Their characteristics were the first thing he paid attention to, and then their special abilities, their breeding, and their languages. Maxi thought he had known them better through such researches, and indeed he did. He soon became the introducer of magical creatures among the boys in his dorm, and, with his ability of story telling, he was quite welcomed.

Maxi had always been a storyteller.

The first time he’d compose a poem, he decided to write about a young Dhampir. He put his knowledge about the vampires and dhampirs into practice, but disappointedly found that he was still far from writing them well. The knowledge he got about them were basic, and he was far from an expert to use the information at his will. And so, he set out for the library again after class, and spent a week’s evenings reading the books he borrowed from the library in his dormitory. He took notes and drew graphs, and finally he thought he had gained a much deeper understanding of this certain breed. Maxi was excited and soon threw himself into writing. The poem was successful according to his friends, and was commented as “authentically vampirish”, even though none of them had ever seen a real vampire. Maxi was exceptionally glad about this first small but firm step — he had grasped the key of learning more about these non-humans. And so, he ventured his way further and looked up more information about them.

Hogwarts was known for its diversity, which Maxi respected a lot. The more times he visited Hogwarts, the more interested he got in it. If possible, he would really love to meet one or two not-perfectly-full-human students and get to know them and their special race eldership. Even though this wish had not been completed so far, Maxi was still running fast on his non-human research track. He continued to read and to take notes, and to compose poems and write novellas featuring non-human characters. And if there was one word to describe him, that would be…

Enthusiast.

Easter break, 2024.

Maxi dragged his feet across the grand Château towards his favourite hiding spot in the massive vineyard, pondering how he might hint to his grandfather about the possibility of getting a new wand. Ever since he got lost in that damned maze and bumped himself into the hedge during the last broom racing practice, everything wasn’t quite the same again. He left the track with scratches on his forehead, aches in his chest, and much distress over his heart. Physical pain and mental strain were discouraging enough for a stressful fifth-year student near the end-of-term exam, but the dysfunction of his wand was the final straw. Not that it was broken or such; he had managed to pocket it properly when he crashed into the bushes. It simply…didn't click anymore.

He contemplated. No, it’s not that the de Fostoncys couldn’t afford a new custom-made wand for their only son; Maxi just found it embarrassing and awkward to ask. It’s difficult to describe it when you felt you had lost the connection you used to have with your wand, and his grandfather would probably remark that it was a temporary thing. Though he was pretty sure that eventually Louis would take him to an established Wandmaker and get him a new wand that matched him well, deep in his heart, strangely enough, Maxi wasn’t really keen on this idea.

But if a new wand wouldn’t work, what would?

It suddenly struck him that the de Fostoncys owned a storeroom in one of the attics, managed by his father. He had been there a couple of times, admiring the delicate artefacts and patterned fabrics that belonged to his ancestors, such as his great-grandfather. Last year, Vincent spent a whole month sorting out the stuff into organised groups, and a wand - they probably had several in stock, actually - shouldn’t be too hard to find.

Maybe he would discover a wand of an ancestor that felt just right, and secretly swap them without telling anybody. That would be a win-win, to fetch himself a handy wand and connect with a distant, glorious family member at the same time. What a wonderful, wonderful idea.

And so he quickly got out of his hiding place and jogged towards the main mansion. Sneaking into the doorway and stealthily tiptoeing upstairs, Maxi soon made his way to the dim attic. He cast Lumos with his current wand - his remark would be that while his current wand didn’t feel that right, it was sufficient for basic casting - and carefully opened the cracking old door.

Carpet, clock, cup… He went through the labels his father had stuck to each drawer and halted when the label read WAND. Heart racing, Maxi bent over and slowly drew it out, discovering nine boxes in total in the drawer. He seized four of the boxes on top, sitting on the floor and crossing his legs, and started a quiet, monologic trial.

He went through all of them, randomly casting Charms he liked. But none of them felt right; they weren’t even as good as his current one. He gave another two a try and was almost defeated in his attempt after accidentally knocking an antique vase on the windowsill over into pieces.

But when he leaned over and grabbed the seventh wand, warmth tickled from the tip of his finger to the end of his arm. And the room seemed to be lighter and fresher.

Gosh. That…was it.

He examined the wand box, from which dust had probably been cleaned by his father. Initials were signed on the back of the box, possibly by its owner. V. D. The D had been playfully crossed out and replaced by an F in cursive script.

It was probably because of the sound made by the broken vase, and his grandfather and father made their appearances. Maxi put the wand into the box and looked up. While he used to be scared and compelled to face his grandfather and father, confidence seemed to have slowly been built over the years. Maybe it was the friends he had made along the way, maybe it was due to the various broom races he had completed, where he had to race in front of hundreds of people; or maybe it was simply because he had turned sixteen. Every grown-up was different from their child version of themselves in some way, he supposed. “My wand isn’t feeling as handy as it used to be. So yeah.” He said, rather casually. Maxi cast his eyes down to the box in his hands, then to Louis and Vincent. They were silent, standing by the door and looking sober. Maxi felt a little bit hesitant to be this ad lib, glancing at their countenances.

“Er…this wand feels just right, actually. Whose wand is this?” He probably couldn’t just run off and pretend that nothing had happened, so he’d better just confront his fate. Even if he was scolded for taking his liberty into the attic, it might be worth it. He raised the box. V. D. - or V. F.?”

Louis took the box containing the wand from his hands, only casting a single glance at it. The elderly and the middle-aged wizards still said nothing. Maxi eyed them inquisitively. Instead of just acting out strict grandfather and aloof father, both were looking…sorrowful.

And all of a sudden, everything was clear. There was only one thing in the world that could cause a breakdown in both Louis and Vincent, besides the extermination of the de Fostoncy clan.

“Is it…hers?”

He admitted that he really hadn’t cared much about his late grandmother, who passed away ages ago after giving birth to his father. He had probably inquired about her when he was very young, but all he could remember was that Louis abruptly switched the topic, and Vincent remained silent. In the de Fostoncy household, she seemed to not exist.

And yet she was (probably) the only one that really softened the de Fostoncy patriarchs’ hearts.

Before Maxi realised it, Louis had already walked out of the room with the wand, and Vincent was following. “Father.” Maxi called out hastily, ignoring all those tedious and useless titles. “…what’s her name?” He whispered.

Vincent turned, and Maxi could see that his eyes were, surprisingly, emotional. Maxi lowered his head. Vincent’s face twisted, as if answering this simple question meant causing him great pain.

“Veerle.” He finally said, sounding as if he was trying hard to hold back tears. “Her name is Veerle. Veerle Delcroix.”

And then Vincent hastened his steps, disappearing into the hallways.

***

Summer holiday, 2024

The last two months of his fifth year had turned out to be okay. He had done a little (unsuccessful) inquiry into his grandmother’s maiden family, and finished his exams pretty uneventfully with his old wand. The only thing was that Louis had taken his grandmother’s wand away, and probably Maxi wouldn’t have the chance to see it again. Both his grandfather and father had treasured everything his grandmother had left behind, and her wand must be on top of that list. He would be compensated with a custom-made wand, possibly. That was…a little disappointing, really.

Upon his arrival at the Château, Maxi dragged his luggage upstairs and walked light-heartedly into his own bedroom, like every other start of holiday. He was shocked to find a familiar-looking box placed on his desk, as if it had appeared from nowhere. He threw his suitcase and carefully placed his hands on it. Inside was a wand, polished, shiny as new.

It was her wand. Veerle Delcroix’s wand. Veerle de Fostoncy’s wand. His grandmother’s wand. His wand.

wood | black walnut

Ever since he joined broom racing, Maxi had been trained to trust his instincts. As a part-time writer and dreamer, he spent a lot of time contemplating, contributing to deeper insights into a variety of topics. It was said that black walnut wood valued sincerity and self-awareness in its owner - well, maybe he’d lie here and there to meet his grandfather’s standards. However, Maxi was mostly honest with himself. If he ever wanted something, he wouldn’t hesitate to go for it in some applicable way. This also honed his skills at being discreet and careful. What’s more, his passion and knowledge of Charms made the pair an even more decent one. (112/50)

core | horned serpent horn

While Maxi could get annoyed as everyone else did, he would, under most circumstances, rather sort things out in a more peaceful way. He was an intellectual wizard, and despite the fact that he was usually deceitful towards his pushy grandfather about what he really thought, Maxi remained honest towards himself and wouldn’t think twice if he had made up his mind. Maxi also had a great passion for writing, especially poetry and fairytales, and it was natural that he was sensitive to emotions and feelings, no matter if they were his own or others’. He wrote, and he created. Those who were aware of this hobby were always encouraged by his work. (113/50)

length | 12.5 inches/31.75 cm

Who said that an introvert couldn’t have a dramatic sense? Maxi had always been a daydreamer, and all sorts of things went on in his head. From knights who capture dragons to valkyries defeating opponents, from fairies dancing hand in hand to thrushes chanting in groups, Maxi was definitely a fan of grander scenes and wouldn’t mind creating one himself - charming ones, of course, like fireworks - if he ever had the chance. The case was simple enough; it’s just go big or go home. (86/50)

flexibility | inflexible

Even though Maxi was a huge fan of inventing stories, sometimes even unrealistic ones, he was someone who firmly stuck to his own beliefs. While his grandfather might have expected him to do one thing through all these years (such as that he shouldn’t make friends with people from certain families), Maxi, while pretending to be obeying the orders, actually followed his own will time after time. Maxi had lots going on in his own mind; there’s not really space left for Louis’ ideas. (84/50)

Last year's racing clearly left a negative impression on Jason Aguilar. He had been practicing for umpteenth times since that embarrassing lost and finally, today, one year later, he returned to the London Quidditch Stadium with a burning spirit. He mounted onto his new broom, the Silver Arrow, and prepared to start the race alongside the Uagadou student who had been his teammate last year, two Beauxbatons students, and... you-know-who.

Jason only gave his brother Javier a quick glance before focusing on himself. It's time to win a competition.
