Akinyi takes steps to ensure that she always looks put together. This is especially prevalent in the fashion choices that she chooses. Oftentimes, this is shown through the colors and textures that Akinyi decides on, and the addition of jewelry and a bag, somehow getting everything seeming to fit together seamlessly. Her hair is usually styled curly, naturally slightly messy, ending at around her shoulders. When Akinyi takes the time to straighten her hair, she wears it down, falling a good bit past her shoulders. She has a smooth, beautifully dark complexion with warm undertones. Her eyes are a dark brown, and often piercing. She has sharp features and seems to usually wear a contemplating look upon her face.

Akinyi is what many people would call a smart-ass. She knows her stuff, and makes sure that she cannot be talked down to. If anyone dares to speak to her as if she is lesser, her instincts kick in and she confronts them in a heartbeat, standing up for herself and what she believes in immediately. This is something that she was taught as she grew up, and something that she quickly adopted of her own accord. Akinyi is hard working and honest, just much a person who values reality rather than sugared words or empty promises. She is thoughtful and patient, with high expectations for others and herself. Akinyi does not raise her voice, simply because she doesn’t need to. Her presence commands respect and full attention. Perhaps it is her body language, perhaps her immediate responses to disrespect and distress— but she has a way about her, and Akinyi makes sure to back it up.

The first aett, often associated with Freyr, the Norse god of fertility, prosperity, and abundance, also honors Freyja, goddess of love, beauty, and magic. Together, these deities embody the primal energies of creation, the cycles of life, and the connections between humanity and the natural world.

Akinyi Odera was born in Kisii, Kenya, from muggle parents. The hilly terrain that surrounded her for her entire childhood encompassed her carefree and flexible attitude. As the middle child of three, Akinyi wasn’t always the most noticeable of her siblings. Her older brother was smart— so smart, in fact, that he had dreams of pursuing law school. Her younger brother was by far the most likeable person that Akinyi knew. He would smile and wink, play dumb when it benefited him, and never get in trouble with their single mother.

Akinyi, by comparison, was boring. She was hard working and methodical, gifted in mathematics and memorization. However, she never stood out on the same level as either of her brothers. Her passion was never truly discovered until a girl in their class began bragging about her fluency in three languages: Ekegusii, Swahili, and English. Akinyi didn’t like that someone else was better than her in any way whatsoever, so she gave her all into learning Swahili, simply because she wanted to be able to match her classmate. Akinyi saved up her money and purchased books, spoke to anyone who would listen, and would change her TV shows to Swahili subtitles so that she was immersed. It worked, and within the next year and a half, Akinyi could read, write, listen, and interpret Swahili, just needing to work on her speaking. She had already been fluent in English and Ekegusii, as well as conversational in Dholuo due to her cultural background and the local language, however Swahili was a language she had not yet touched until this interaction. Her mother had seen firsthand how much effort her daughter had put into learning Swahili, and told her she was proud.

This skill never really grew much more than that until she was accepted into Uagadou. Suddenly, Akinyi was just as interesting, if not more so, than her siblings. After all, she was magical. Her dream message came on January 1st just like all the other magical children. Except she had no clue that it had been coming.

Her acceptance and the explanation was a whirlwind, with Akinyi struggling to wrap her mind around such a concept. Once in Uagadou, she was delighted to hear of supplementary language classes regarding Swahili— all of her hard work was paying off, seeing as she didn’t actually need too much help at all! While at Uagadou, Akinyi latched onto various subjects, but mainly Kuchanganya Viungo (Potions & Alchemy) and Kusngalia Nyota (Astronomy). The act of making potions was a comforting and methodical process and involved more than simply magic. It involved resourcefulness and a sharp mind. Akinyi quickly found herself excelling, and during her free periods would study other languages with fellow students, often offering trades of completed homework for a language lesson.

Perhaps this was an odd exchange, but it worked for Akinyi.

She soon graduated Uagadou as a general student, very much aware of her interest in Potions and Languages. She accepted an apprenticeship as a Potions Assistant, expecting to establish her career as a Potioneer and leave whatever hobby she had developed with languages behind.

However, this pair of particular mentors was far more interested in having her translate potion recipes, the majority of which tied into Ancient Runes and The Elder Futhark. They simply had many tomes lying around, and didn’t have the time to translate them, thus their hiring of an assistant. Akinyi expected to fail, but worked at it anyways. She translated letter by letter, over and over again. Soon, she found herself translating word by word, and eventually she knew The Elder Futhark Script as well as she knew Ekegusii, simply because of her repetitive translations, over and over again.

During her apprenticeship, she came to the startling realization that one of her former classmates from Uagadou was their daughter. While at school they’d had their own run-ins, performing Akinyi’s language exchanges on a multitude of occasions. However, this daughter was now sticking around her parents’ potion shop, the very place Akinyi was apprenticing.

They finally had their first true meeting with the sound of a rather noticeable explosion. Akinyi had nothing to do with it; no, she was doing her translations, as per usual. It was Malaika, the daughter. She had somehow failed at a potion so badly that it exploded, forming a cloud of grey gas and sending residue flying throughout the entire brewing space. Akinyi had coughed, the entire room beginning to shake until she finally drew in a deep breath above the cloud, met with a soft “Are you okay?” Akinyi was fine. That was, until she realized that the residue had landed squarely on her notebook, ruining a week’s worth of translations.

From then on, Akinyi tried her best to stay away from Malaika whilst there. They always seemed to find ways to bump into each other, though. No matter how much Akinyi made her despise clear, Malaika seemed undeterred. Finally, they went on a date. It was nice. Akinyi… didn’t know what to make of it. Their dating continued during her entire apprenticeship and constant translations, full of sweet gifts and laughter once Akinyi got over the potion incident.

Following the two year long apprenticeship, Akinyi went back to school. This time, to the Magical Institution for Ancient Scripture. Malaika had followed, allowing for their relationship to continue and grow. This school, though? It was where Akinyi truly flourished. Researching, learning, and translating many tomes, she was involved in a project that decoded and translated Djenné manuscripts from Mali, all the while doting on her girlfriend. She’d found her home amongst her fellow students, and with her love.

However, Akinyi did eventually graduate, and she ended up moving back home to Kisii, with a loving Malaika following quickly behind her. Around the same time of her move, the classification of various Rune systems, primarily those found in East Africa, were reclassified as endangered. This is due to many not finding opportunities to exercise knowledge of Ancient Runes when growing up in communities that simply do not always have the time to sit down and run through possible translations and solutions. But perhaps… Akinyi did. Employed by one of the local governments, she spent about a year learning the Ge'ez Script. Reading through the scriptures took much time, and the endurance of headaches that pounded away at her forehead, but it was worth it.

She would sit at her desk for hours, with only the light of the sun and her candle to read by. It was at these moments that Akinyi truly loved Malaika. She would sit behind her and run her fingers through her hair, or trace circles on her back. She would deliver chocolates and trade side hugs for forehead kisses. Akinyi truly grew to understand their love. Although it wasn’t perfect, and they’d had their fair share of misunderstandings and miscommunications, they had remained so in love.

Eventually, Akinyi did end up learning and translating many verses and poems written in Ge’ez Script into modern languages, primarily Swahili. Malaika insisted that Akinyi take a break and travel with her. So they did, taking a relaxing and peaceful trip to around the world. It was truly gorgeous. Their last stop was Brazil, the tropical paradise. They dined at restaurants, gifted flowers to each other, the whole shebang. Finally, Akinyi took Malaika hiking to a waterfall. It was a short walk, and Malaika looked stunning. Akinyi dropped to one knee to reveal a ring, a smile stretched across her face as she asked the question, only to get shocked laughter and tears in reply, before Malaika, too, dropped down to one knee. They had accidentally double proposed, with both of them carrying rings to ask the other for eternal love. The two exchanged a tearful embrace, the rings now signs of their adoration.

Following this, Akinyi went to the north, set to explore the Celtic and Nordic runes, the history deep and rich within the region, culture, and writing. Of course, she took her new fiancé with her. It was here when Akinyi heard of the opening at Hogwarts, and she was satisfied with this opportunity. She would have the opportunity to pass on all of her knowledge to the next generation, and take a break from mindless speculation about what heavy books may be trying to communicate, and instead teaching from separate heavy books about the very things she had been studying for years. Akinyi was set to give Hogwarts a shot.

First Instance of Magic: Akinyi just wanted the noise to stop. Was it so difficult to click your pen more softly? She was trying to focus, and her brother’s pen was a thorn in her side. Plugging her ears, Akinyi read the words on the page again… and again. It just wasn’t sinking in. And the damn clicking just kept going. Finally, unplugged her ears and her anger showed itself, a rare occurrence. The rage painted all over her features, her brother paused for a moment, eyes wide with surprise and dismay. It took a moment for Akinyi to register everything that had just happened. Why was their dining room table covered in ink?

It turns out, the pen had snapped in half. Randomly. Eight year old Akinyi was confused, but it wasn’t anything too out of the ordinary. At the very least, the constant clicking had finally ceased.

The second aett, traditionally connected to Heimdall, the vigilant watchman of the gods, also aligns with Mordgud, the guardian of the bridge to the underworld. Together, they reflect the balance of awareness and the trials we must face to navigate the human experience.

The final aett, named after Tyr, the god of justice and sacrifice, also honors the Germanic goddess Zisa (or Cisa), an autumn goddess of harvest and sovereignty. Together, they represent the pursuit of higher truths, the legacies we leave behind, and the spiritual journey that defines our existence.
