Magical Masquerade: the actual ball
Speech: #DB7093Talking with @Quinn Brook and @Ophelia Northwell, and missing @Matthew CampbellViva looked up at her friends, slightly more shy then before. She had a strange, bitter feeling in her mouth and she didn't seem to be able to formulate thoughts into words at the moment. Above all, she felt saddened and weary. She wasn't sure why, as the ball had just barely begun. "Um," she tried to answer Ophelia's kind offer in a way that wouldn't hurt her feelings. It wasn't that she didn't like her friends or didn't want to be with them, and the last thing she wanted to do was hurt their feelings, but right now Viva just needed some space. She didn't feel like having a great time and enjoying herself when she was feeling so melancholy at the moment.
"I suddenly have a headache," she murmured. It was a white lie. Her head did indeed hurt, but not from a simple headache. All the thoughts and worries swirling around did nothing to help her feel better. She felt a pang again as she surveyed the crowd, looking for one person in particular but not finding him amidst the sea of people. Another pang of sorrow overwhelmed her, and more of the same thoughts crowded into her brain. Of course he had a date. Of course. How could I have been so silly. Everything that happened, all of those moments, they must have meant nothing to him."I'm sorry, but I think I'm going to go sit in the shade of that tree for a little while," she pointed feebly at a lovely blossoming tree about fifteen meters away from them. There were no people by it.
"I'm sorry," Viva felt she was repeating herself, but suddenly felt dizzy. She curtsied, barely aware of her actions, and slowly made her way over to the tree. Her brows furrowed at the strange sort of commotion that seemed to be happening nearby, she squinted. Were those... nifflers? What in Merlin's name where they doing here? Viva loved nifflers, they were one of her favourite magical creatures, in fact. She was confused and a little worried about all the mess they were making, however.Action: Interacting with Quinn and Ophelia, then being confused by the nifflers.Sta 5 | Eva 6 | Str 4 | Wis 7 | Arc 7 | Acc 6 | Lovely Creature

Frankly, she shocked when Sara not only accepted her ridiculous idea, but insisted on it and acted immediately to grant her request. She giggled inwardly at the absurd scenario they had found themselves in: from falling in front of this "scary" older student, to riding his back to save her friends and classmates from wild nifflers. What would Hogwarts bring to her next? Real live Heffalumps?
"Thank you, Sara." EmmaLee said with a wide smile as she gingerly stood up on her good foot, without putting her bandaged foot back on the ground, and climbed up onto his back. As he stood up, hooking his arms under her knees as you do when giving one a ride on your back, EmmaLee put her left arm around his shoulder. While holding her wand in her right hand, she pointed Sara towards the brown haired girl (Brookline), as she needed to see if her spell had done anything in that situation, and then they would see how Kaya was doing.
Kaya, at least, had someone to help her, while the other girl did not. As Sara had stood up, EmmaLee had seen that the boy who was with Kaya was attempting to use a tablecloth like a net for the thing. The other girl was on her own and, from what EmmaLee could tell, had walked over to a table and given her jewelry up for lost as the black animal has taken off with it. Hopefully, EmmaLee's spell had stopped the niffler and Brookline's night would be brighter at getting whatever the little troublemaker had stolen. Otherwise, EmmaLee could try to do more to stop it, or maybe she could convince Sara to cast a higher level spell, at least get the jewelry back. No way to get better at magic than to practice, right? Though she knew she wouldn't push him if he said he didn't think he could do it.
"Let's go that way first, Kaya seems to have some 'elp and that girl does not." She said, pointing with her finger in the direction of the brown haired first year. Never point with your wand unless you are going to use it, her mother's advice weirdly rang in her ear as she pointed.
As Sara moved to comply with her request and EmmaLee looked across the way ahead of them, she saw a peculiar sight. A boy in a brown jacket and top hat, with a mask covered in gears, was rooted to the spot next to the dance floor. He was looking around in a confused manner, as if he hadn't seen where the spell had come from. As the taller pair came closer, EmmaLee's eyes grew wide in recognition with quite a bit of worry.
STEPHEN! Like she wouldn't recognize him the moment she had a good look at him, but why was he rooted to the ground? Her free-ish right hand flew to her mouth at a thought: had it been her second wide-flying spell that had caught him instead of the about-to-be-netted niffler? Oh no! EmmaLee's face grew red with embarrassment. Of all the people it could have hit. Granted, she was embarrassed that it had hit anyone, if it was truly her miss-aimed spell, but of all the people.
"Sara! Please, stop! Right 'ere!" She urged, pulling his shoulder a bit in urgency to get him to stop in front of Stephen. He complied almost immediately, stopping just in front of Stephen and looking down with EmmaLee at her rooted friend.
"Stephen! There you are! Are you alright? What 'appened?" She said, gulping down the panic rising in her chest. What if he found out it was her spell? Would he be mad? She mentally shook her head. No time for that. There were nifflers running amok and now Stephen was a half a tree in the ground. Her mind worked quickly to resolve the situation. Reparifarge would work here, since taking root is a transfiguration spell. She would do that in just a moment if Stephen didn't beat her to it.
Heffalumps, indeed. Hogwarts only seemed to bring EmmaLee constant embarrassment and random injuries, never fun, fanciful elephant creatures.

Magical Masquerade: the actual ball

Twirling Rowan around the dancefloor it was hard to bite back the bittersweet pain of the moment that clung tightly to his chest. How could this be both his first and last ball with his best friend. Rowan and Matthew had been practically inseparable their first year and now he knew that every second was just a fleeting moment closer to her eventual departure. She wasn't just a part of his heart here but she made Hogwarts seem like home when it felt nothing but alien to him. She understood him when no one else could and wouldn't sleep until she saw him smile whenever his head was clouded. Rowan was Hogwarts to Matthew and with her gone he had no idea who he would become.
As the soft sweet melody marked the end of their dance he held her for a moment with his eyes threatening to break under the strain of his emotions. Pulling her deep into his embrace so her head lay against his chest he hugged her tight and warmth wrapped them together. Rowan would always be connected to him and in this moment he wanted to never let go desperate to cling to the memory. "I'm going to miss you so much Row." Pulling her back slightly so he could stare into her beautiful sunny face and glinting eyes he spoke softly to her, "I know you're going to love your new school and how could they not love you. You'll always be important to me Row I hope you know that but I know I need to let you go. Thank you for being the best friend I could have ever asked and showing me what true friendship means."
The moment was a peaceful silence in the swirling blur of chaos that was the ball and turning to the drinks table he smiled that contagious smile of his brushing away the beginnings of tears that dotted his rosy cheeks. "I think I'll get us a drink, what do you say." Without waiting for an answer he hurriedly rushed over to the drinks table desperate for a breath of air. He wouldn't show Rowan the pain he felt for losing her, he couldn't it wouldn't be fair. So he clung to the delicate coverings of the table and reaching out for a glass began to survey the options that all seemed to be bubbling concoctions of magic that made his stomach swirl.
Throwing a glance back towards where he had left panic welled in his throat. She was gone. Just like that Rowan had disappeared from the ball without even a word of goodbye. Perhaps it was just as painful for her the thought ringing in his head but as he searched desperately discarding the glasses on the table he sought her out everywhere he could think. She was really gone. Would he ever see her again the storm of thoughts that Rowan so often soothed with her sunshine was beginning to surface and now alone Matthew was utterly defenceless to prevent it.
So there he stood surrounded by hundreds of students from both his own school and the wider wizarding world and yet he felt more alone than he had in years. Lost in a sea of cheerful faces and fun he found no joy. His first ball was destined to be the disaster he envisioned it to be. Reaching up to yank his mask off determined to be done with the whole affair he pulled with all his strength and yet it refused to move stuck to his face. Could this day possibly get any worse.

Aurélie sensed that Emily was still uneasy, just like herself. Though she still moved on the dance floor, she was concerned for the other girl. Her own poisoned drink seemed to only heighten her senses and give her thoughts of lurking danger, but what if Emily's poisoned drink had something worse. What was the other girl feeling right now?
As Emily spoke, Aurélie noticed that she kept eyeing the attacking nifflers warily. With good reason, the French girl thought as the drink's forced paranoia settled back in. What if they start attacking with lots of force and hurt me and Emily while trying to grab our things? A thousand terrible scenarios and thoughts darted through her mind and she tried to shake it all off as she danced.
"Read and write? Interesting. My mother jokes that I can't sit still long enough to do something academic like that." Aurélie cracked a smile, though her mind was still coming up with deathly scenarios. "As I told you, I'm a dancer." She gave a little twirl as if to show her talent. "Believe it or not, I like outdoors too. I'm more of a photographer though. In fact..."
Aurélie trailed off as she realised that her enchanted camera was in the bag that she'd packed for herself. She'd planned on taking pictures of the amazing scenery that the ball would surely have. The planners hadn't disappointed. "...I have a camera that I was going to use tonight."
How badly Aurélie wanted to leave the ball, using this as an excuse. So easily she could just leave, then sleep away the effects of the tampered drink. But leaving Emily alone? The thought left a sour taste in her mouth. It wasn't nice to do that, especially to a girl so sweet as Emily.
I'll go later. Aurélie decided, nodding to herself. I'll use my camera as an excuse to leave the ball early after speaking to Emily some more.
"So, after the drinks, do you think I should give any of the food a try?" Aurélie joked. She was going to have to eat sooner or later, unless the nifflers stole it all, but she needed more conversation.

Mentioning: @Beatrice’s gaze turned soft as Ying spoke about why she wanted to be a healer. She was feeling more and more like there was a lot that the two of them did not know about each other and yet, Bea still called the Lioness her best friend. She saw her friends mannerisms change slightly as she spoke and Beatrice couldn’t help but gently reach for her friends hand and give her an encouraging smile. She squeezed it ever so slightly before letting go again and listening to Ying finish her reasoning. Her friends words had put more questions than answers to Shimizu‘s previous question into her mind. Ying had such a valid reason to persuade a career in Healing but what was Beatrice‘s motivation to do this besides a lifelong dream? Shamefully, she had always been sure she would be in a position of power and leadership and so she did not see herself working a similar job as the healer apprenticeship. It had been set in stone for most of her life and when she thought back, she could barely remember what had pushed her in this direction. Truthfully, it had most likely been her Grandfather. He had taught her a lot and it was his interests, that she had taken over. The deeper her thoughts spiraled, the more sure she became that this need to become a healer and a leader, had come from him. And somehow that gave her a bit of peace, knowing she still carried his impact on her around.
When Shimizu talked about his Career wishes, Beatrice listened attentively and smiled politely at the wish to step into his Fathers footsteps. It would be the same for Benedict, her little brother. Inheritance, Traditions and Heirlooms ran deep in their kind of circles. Perhaps the Mahoutokoro student came from a similar upbringing. „That is truly quite impressive and does sound like a lot of work, with an outlook on a stable career and future.“ Beatrice said this more to herself than to the dark haired boy, but she spoke her exact thoughts and her voice was displaying an almost admiring tone. It was quite clear that he knew what he was talking about. They had been moving to one of the tables with refreshments and Ying as well as Shimizu opted to take a refreshment, while Beatrice chose to not take anything just yet. It had been too many times that food at events had been tempered with, in their school. Beatrice was looking around at the location, when the now familiar boy spoke again. He had apparently gotten to a new found excitement and with the way he spoke, Beatrice almost expected him to fall into dance. She returned his smile out of politeness, however a odd feeling settled around them. „Sure… Some Students really are their most true self here.“ She replied to him, a gaze that was searching for help turned to Ying. Who was now speaking as well, but not making any sense. That was when Beatrice’s features finally slipped into horror and she tried to grab the glasses both her companions were holding, right out of their hands. What now?Actions: Conversing, Realizing what happened.

April 13, 2024 - Masquerade Ball
EmmaLee was a smart girl with a great memory. Knowing this, Stephen had more than good reason to believe that the first place she might go to look for him would be the food and drink station. It had always been the place he first hit at every Ball with her, or talked of hitting at every Ball, so it simply made good sense that she’d think he’d reasonably be hanging around there. He was a growing boy and never turned food down when it was before him. So as he started off in the direction of the banquet, he felt, more than he heard, his stomach rumbling.
Oh, yeah. He had not eaten yet today. He reflexively lifted his hand up to rub his belly as if that was going to magically silence the growls and subdue the hunger pangs. Well, he was already late enough catching up to her. Not eating for the rest of the night might be a deserved, if unintended, act of penitence for his juvenile suggestion that they not tell each other what they would be wearing. It sounded like a good idea at the time he thought of it, but this was Hogwarts. Of course there’d be monkey wrenches tossed in along the way to muck things up. He should have known to expect the unexpected. Note to self, Schwartz - next time eat before the Ball.
As he turned to pick up some speed now that he was off the dance floor, his singular focus was on making EmmaLee his priority for the rest of the evening. Whatever she wanted to do, they were going to do - and happily so. He’d started off hard and fast, but suddenly had to contort himself as if he were a mime who had run smack dab into an invisible wall. The abrupt halt to his sprint was simply in order to avoid being the wrecking ball that would have otherwise unceremoniously crashed into an unsuspecting student. Being the reason yet someone else’s Ball might be ruined this evening was too much to contemplate. He wasn't entirely successful in stopping completely, so he did, in fact, bump into her. She was definitely surprised, but gracious about it. No one was hurt and no damage was done to her gown or to his pride.
After apologizing profusely, he tipped his stovepipe hat to both her and her friends, and was just about to take off again when he turned just in time to see a dark green stream of magic coming right at him. It was too late to get out of the way, even with his quick reflexes, and his mind started immediately to go over what spells shot out green streams of light. He didn’t have to think long on it as he immediately felt his feet beginning to feel rather wooden, and he meant both figuratively and literally.
He watched in scientific fascination as his feet turned into thick, woody roots and sank down into the earth. “Well, that answers that question,” he snickered, expecting the transfiguration to hurt, but it surprisingly did not. He was not overly concerned to find that his ankles were now following suit and turning into woody material as well. The lack of concern came from knowing that a Raparifarge would set all straight. Reaching in his pocket for his wand and finding nothing there that should have been there, the first scintilla of concern began to tickle his lizard brain. He knew it was in his pocket when he left the cabin. Where could it have gone? The transfiguration was now about 1/3 of the way up his calves. He turned his eyes to the area where he had collided with the girl just a minute earlier, hoping to spy his wand.
“Eureka!” he exclaimed in a relieved tone. Now he just needed someone to help retrieve his wand for him and the sooner the better. As he turned back around, he blinked a number of times at yet one more unexpected sight he had not anticipated seeing this evening. It took about two nanoseconds for it to register what he was seeing and who he was seeing. The question that flew to his mind, however, was why was he seeing it?
He looked to the guy piggy-backing her around and then back to her. For an indeterminate amount of time, Stephen forgot about his wand.
“EmmaLee?”

ReducioIf there was a competition for best dressed villain, he has a good chance of winning. His simple sleek black pair of collared shirt and pants held together by a belt. Adorning his main look, is his knee long jacket with delicate yet intricate patterns on the front and back. Fitting his tall intimidating figure.
His mask resembled a crow. Hiding his eyes under shadows. The short beak stopped just above his nose. It will be difficult to tell what his eyes looked like. But his energy (Terrible Presence ability) leaves more people unnerved instead of curios.Mahou
Japanese / English
It must have been an interesting sight. A tall bulky, guy with an impressively intimidating stance and uneasy black attire with a crow mask was giving… a piggyback ride. To a small perhaps 5ft girl with a completely different aesthetic from him. It was quite a..jarring difference to see such people working so closely.
Sara followed every single request Emmalee told him. Kept his word as being her legs while hers healed from a previous injury. He felt absolutely no embarrassment or shame in his actions. More like pride, if anything. He was helping a new friend, and using himself to help her own friends. He felt that was a good enough reason to run around with a small girl on his back, despite the possible onlookers.
Finally, they seemed to arrive at a stopping point, in front of what he assumed to be her other friend. It was a tad odd sight, still.
Caught in her own spell (was it an accident or on purpose? Sara assumed the former), was a boy around Emmalee’s age. A tall, brunette boy with blue eyes. According to Emmalee, his name appeared to be Stephan. A name thats going to be quite the tongue twister for him to pronounce later on. But friend first, worry later. Sara’s first impression of him was impressed by the bat. His foot seemed stuck to the ground like Mother Earth refused to let him go. And yet instead of freaking out or scrambling for help, he was more distracted by Emmalee’s and Sara’s appearance.
Oh. Oh, wait. He was looking. He was looking…right at them. A stranger Sara didn't know well was looking. Oh dear.
Suddenly all of the burst of confidence Sara gained from helping a new friend shrunk like an inflated balloon. His shoulders tense and he stood just a bit straighter out of habit. Still making sure Emmalee was comfortable and safe. Yet there was an almost bone-chilling energy that radiated off of him. Part of him wanted to hide behind Emmalee. But she was the one on his back, so …
In the stiffest, gruffest tone, he looked dead straight into Stephan’s eyes, through his black crow mask that cast a darks shadow over his eye and said;
“...hi”
His heart was pounding so fast. Unsure if the two could hear it or not. Swallowing a thick nervous gulp he stiffened his face into an instinctual deep frown. Mainly at himself for taking a bit of a while to ease his shyness in front of a new person [ooc: Stephan doesn’t have fearless so feel free to be affected by Sara’s TP if thats fun for you]

EmmaLee raised a pale eyebrow and tipped her head in confusion as Stephen stared up at her, her almost panicked questions sailing right over his top hat. "Um, well, yeah. It's me." She said, taking her butterfly mask off of her forehead with her mostly free hand, folding the temples down, and sticking one into the collar of her dress like one would a pair of sunglasses. Though she had moved her mask up in order to see the nifflers better, maybe Stephen was having a hard time seeing it anyway. Alternatively, maybe it was just the fact that he was seeing her chin this time, rather than the top of her head. Sara was not extremely taller than Stephen, but definitely, a good half a foot or so, which brought EmmaLee up to that same height when she was on his back.
"I know I'm a little taller than usual," She said with a small giggle, "but it's me. Are you alright? Allow me to fix that, s'il vous plait. if you please" She waved her wand and said the incantation for the transfiguration reversal spell; Stephen's legs returned to normal, the barky exterior climbing back down his legs and into the ground as if they had never been there at all. EmmaLee breathed an internal sigh of relief. If it had been her spell, at least she was able to fix it.
As EmmaLee lifted her arm to deposit her white wand into her lacy sleeve, a way to keep it accessible but free up her hand to talk with, she felt Sara's shoulders tense under her hands, and he stood up straighter, jostling her just a little, but keeping a firm grip so she wouldn't fall, another curious thing.
The nervous air about him that had relaxed as they had interacted, in a way that EmmaLee had taken for granted, returned like the north wind in winter, coming up from his toes and into the set of his jaw. It was a weird, almost invasive experience for EmmaLee being on Sara's back as this happened. She definitely felt like a foreign object along for the ride, which, of course, she was. He muttered a dark greeting to Stephen, possibly only heard by EmmaLee because her ear was right next to his mouth, and EmmaLee turned to him with a further raised eyebrow.
For a moment, she looked from the side of Sara's now tense face to Stephen's dumbfounded one and back before it clicked. Sara had said that people find him scary, which probably spanned to all new people he met. She knew well enough about people that it was one thing for a tiny, white thing like her to burst into a group of people and start chattering away, and quite another for a tall, admittedly intimidating, dark boy to come into a crowd or be wandering around with said tiny, white thing on his back.
It wasn't like EmmaLee was unaware that he was intimidating. Even she had been nervous of a tall, dark, unknown older boy, at first, before he had shown his kindness. If his reactions from earlier were anything to go by, most people didn't get to the kindness before they discredited him. EmmaLee felt the indignation for his experience rising up again in her chest before she remembered that this was Stephen.
Stephen was kind and friendly and brave. He'd see Sara for who he was as well. She would just be the segue. Then they all could get on to catching some nifflers and then they all could get on to enjoying the ball.
"This is Sara Kohana." She said, turning back to Stephen and tilting her head towards Sara's with a chipper smile. "I 'ad a little mishap on the way to finding you and got quite a bit injured." She said, wiggling her injured foot a little to show Stephen the bandage.
"I'm alright though. Nothing the nurse can't 'andle in a few seconds or I can't walk off once it's rested a bit." She said in a rush, not wanting Stephen to worry or jump to the conclusion that it was Sara's fault. "I just couldn't really walk very well yet, and the nifflers came out and started going after people, and I tried to cast a couple of spells to stop them," No need to mention which spells. "but I couldn't aim from the ground, so I asked if 'e could 'elp me." She finished, rushing the explanation a bit still. One part of her mind was on reconnecting with Stephen and getting him to understand that she had been looking for him and got detoured, one part on making sure Stephen didn't think badly of Sara, or vice verse come to think of it, and the last part was on the niffler chaos still going on and the need to go check out if her other spell had hit its mark, also, on checking if Kaya was alright.
"'E's a knight, like Jamie." She said with a wide smile, referring to Jamie Zeigler's helping her when she was injured during the Prank Wars. That felt like such a long time ago now. Personality-wise, EmmaLee knew that Jamie and Sara were as different as the sun and the moon, though that wasn't necessarily a bad case either way. Both had been gallant enough to help an injured girl when no one else was available, one at the cost of his nose.
"Sara, this is Stephen Schwartz." She said, still chipper, gesturing to Stephen. "I was looking for 'im when I fell." Now that Stephen was here and freed, they could all go help with the nifflers and enjoy the rest of the evening. Maybe, they could even meet up with Kaya and her friend, as well, and make a group of it.
The little whisper in the back of her mind that she had elected to ignore reminded her that the more people around them, the harder it would be for her to be alone with Stephen, and the louder voice that she had elected to listen to shouted, "THE MORE THE MERRIER!" If she could surround herself and Stephen with friends, hopefully, she would remember that they needn't be anything more.
.....because she didn't want to be anything more....
and he certainly didn't...
right?

I'm really sorry for posting this so late. There's just a lot to do IRL, rn... This would be one of the last moderation rounds, with one or two following up. There will be no specific niffler attacks unless you want one (for which you can owl me), but feel free to capture the agitated nifflers. If I have missed out anything, please owl me. .

Despite their tiny stature, the mischievous nifflers wreaked havoc wherever they went. Desperate, people frantically concealed their precious jewels and even attempted to fend off the nifflers. Their small size worked to their advantage, allowing them to effortlessly evade most of the attacks. Only one necklace had been stolen so far. The nifflers were however left with seething anger due to the attacks. Now, in an agitated state, the nifflers prowled about, eagerly seeking out their next target.
