Aly Salinger had invited a few sporting students to try a new game—summoner’s court. It didn’t involve a broom, so Della almost said no; but it involved spellwork that wasn’t related to Transfiguration, so Della said yes. It was a nice way to procrastinate studying—but hey! she’d have to cast a charm here or there, so maybe it was considered studying.

The Gryffindor fifth-year looked around. The crowd was remarkably young. Only Colin McCoire was her age. They had many years of racing head-to-head. Well, well, it seemed today the two would do a little sparring with feet firmly planted on the ground. A first for them. She hoped he remembered that cracker jinx she had blasted him with in the last broom race.

On Della’s team was another Slytherin broom racer, Alyss, two Gryffindor prefects, a Hufflepuff duelling captain, the editor-in-chief of the Headliner, and a previous Ravenclaw prefect. While they had extensive resumes, she was unsure if they had even mastered the summoning charm, having only one or two years of charm class under their belts. Well, this would be interesting …

On June first, an interesting assortment of sports captains and others chosen for the task had come together in the grounds. They would be playing a newly crafted game called Summoner's Court, and had been chosen to test it out under late spring's clear skies, the scorching hot sun being a blessing to a certain player, the sunchild among them.

Her name was Lyanna Oak.

Looking up toward the sun as Icarus had once done, she smiled, truly, at long last. A breath. Not choked, at peace. A tear glistening like the sea on a midsummer day, not of sadness but the relief of feeling okay. It was time to let go for a moment. Time to grace herself with the concept of fun once more. Despite the difficult nights, summer made her feel alright. Just enough to persevere the grief and pain that persisted endlessly, slowly fracturing the young soul. Bones can be mended. Does the concept apply to a broken heart, not of "true love", but of the one who had cared for her always, birthed her, loved her?

But now, as the sunchild breathed slowly in and out, everything seemed to be okay, the world slowing to a haze, oh so many radiant souls around her? The world may be rigged, but these people all had a light inside them that was worth the universe. Lyanna once had such a brilliant spirit, too. And despite the hurt, the insomnia, today she felt some of that come back. It felt... right, somehow.

As she walked to her teammates, a few names stood out to her. @Alyss Gilmour was currently one of Slytherin's Broom Racing captains, and had partaken in the first unofficial Duelling match she had moderated after becoming captain. The girl was very sweet, and Lyanna was happy she was here today. @Della Barfield was another Broom Racing captain if she recalled correctly, from Gryffindor. The sunchild didn't know her personally in any way, but as they were both sports captains, Lyanna did know of her. She had seen @Meiyu Xiang in the halls before as well, being the Gryffindor prefect that she was, and was also one of the duellists that had participated in the sunchild's first official match. Then came @Elena Clark, the moonchild among them– it only seemed right that she had been chosen to take part in this match. @Maximilianus Kenneally Vidler had been nominated prefect of Gryffindor to work alongside Meiyu not long prior, and despite being a mere first year, Lyanna had faith in him being a good addition to their team. Last but certainly not least, came chaos-sewer @Silas Norwood, somehow nominated Editor in Chief a while ago and was certainly a good candidate to blow the others up if that was what they were going for. Jokes aside, the sunchild knew their team would do well together as a team against their opponents.

Sunlight pouring from the cloudless skies scorched her eyes as she stepped away from the shadows, a hand raised to block this sudden illumination. Wand in pocket, Elena made her way to the terrain, the cogs of her mind spinning relentlessly. This was a world from the tumult of quidditch, to which she had grown accustomated to, and yet it promised an interesting match. She was eager to start, and see what this new game had in reserve for them.

Why was Silas here, one might ask? Much like his reasoning for doing anything, he had been bored. He might as well try something new, especially since it was considered a “sport” (or at least a game). So, here he was, starting off the last month of the school year with this game in the sweltering heat. “I want a nice, sportsmanlike match, so be kind to each other.” Silas rolled his eyes. That was boring. Even more boring was the fact that he was starting off on the bench, though reasonably he couldn’t expect anything different, being one of only two first years on his team.

Lottie wasn't exacrly sure what had compelled her to dip her toes into yet another unknown sport, yet here she was. There was very little she understood about the game, aside from the slightly less physically demanding nature compared to quidditch. Still, there was a competitive side of her that desired greatly to win.

Second-String Actions
Maximilian and Silas, on one side of the bench, whispered to each other about the game; on the other side, Cecilia and Sabrina were doing the same thing. Unfortunately, it seemed like neither one of the pairs could come up with a comprehensive strategy due to the newness of the game and their unfamiliarity with it; Aly, overhearing some of the whispers, turned and gave them a sympathetic smile. "It's a tough game. You'll get better as you go."
Reducio
Sabrina and Cecilia are strategizing. Combined WIS DC is 20.
Roll: [d20: 2] + 15 = 17.
Fail. No stat points awarded.

Maximilian and Silas are strategizing. Combined WIS DC is 20.
Roll: [d20: 9] + 9 = 18.

Player-Based Defensive Actions
Erast fumbled in his pockets for something, but couldn't seem to find it. Aly nodded to him. "Potion, right? The ingestion ones are legal, but that's a good reminder to double-check your inventory before you leave the dormitory!"
Reducio
Erast tries to drink Wit-Sharpening Potion, which is not in his trunk. No rolls needed.
Player-Based Attack Actions/Debuff Fouls
The first time that three girls moved to attack each other happened in rapid-fire, bang-bang-bang, and Aly made a mental note to make sure that any legal attacks should try to happen at around the same time in the future. After all, Kaitlyn's quick Disarming Charm sent Meiyu's wand flying across the stage, where it skittered to a stop just near the edge; luckily, she wouldn't need to step off the stage to go get it. "Ouch! Xiang, go grab your wand - you're going to need that!" On the other hand, Rosaline was casting Finite Incantatem on Della, which seemed to backfire onto her; luckily, she came through unscathed, but Della would definitely be able to cast still this round. And as for Meiyu's attempted cast, well, her wand was out of her hand. Aly frowned. "Bad luck. Bad luck..."
Reducio
I did an initiative roll this round before making the change to initiatives listed in my changes box at the end of this post. I'll remind you all that this is a test match and those changes are bound to happen as I learn and specify! Initiative roll was Kaitlyn, Rosaline, Meiyu.

Please note that since both sides have Lovely Creatures and no one has Impartial, EVERYONE has +2 to every WIS DC. I have already factored these into the DCs so I don't have to manually write +2 to every DC.

Kaitlyn casts Expelliarmus on Meiyu, DC 15.
Kaitlyn WIS: [d20: 15] + 10 = 25. 25 > 15. Successful cast.
Kaitlyn ARC: [d20: 6] + 7 = 13.
Meiyu STR: [d20: 7] + 4 = 11.
13 > 11. Meiyu is disarmed.

Rosaline casts Finite Incantatem on Della, DC 14.
Rosaline WIS: [d20: 1] + 8 = 9. 9 < 14, plus critical fail. Unsuccessful cast. I have updated Finite Incantatem for what happens on critical fails in the future but that is not for this round.

Meiyu's action was void in this round. Note that that is changing as per the changes at the bottom, but her action this round is still void. We're learning.
Stone-Based Attack Actions/Debuff Fouls
Only one person was doing anything regarding the stones other than simply summoning them. Lyanna had been inching closer to Kaitlyn, and then suddenly darted in front of her to throw her off during her summoning attempt; though she succeeded in blocking the other girl's view, Aly pointed at her and blew an imaginary whistle. "Oak! Remember when I read over the rules literally thirty seconds ago? I was very clear on not blocking others from taking their shots. You can't stand in front of someone, even if you're trying to be sneaky about it. Come stand over here with me for the next turn so you can think about what you've done."
Reducio
Lyanna is Blocking Kaitlyn.
Lyanna STR: [d20: 12] + 7 = 19.
Kaitlyn STR: [d20: 11] + 5 = 16.
19 > 16. Kaitlyn is Blocked and has disadvantage on her stone-summoning.
Is Lyanna caught for this flagrant foul? DC: 19.
Lyanna WIS: [d20: 5] + 4 = 9. 9 < 19. Lyanna is caught and, next round, will be sitting out on a time-out.
Summoning Stones
Meiyu was without her wand, and Charlotte seemed to have zoned out. Alyss and Elena were locked in on their stones, ready to pull two towards themselves each, while everyone else had gotten in some other actions (or were planning others) and could only grab one before the allotted time for the round would quickly run out. Aly called out, "Yan," and though Erast cast a beautiful Wingardium Leviosa, his accuracy left something to be desired. It was always hard to be accurate with something floating in the air!

Rosaline failed to cast her similar spell, probably distracted by the beauty of some others on the opposing team, and she was followed by Della, whose beautiful cast of Depulso landed her stone squarely in the blue zone. Despite having been Blocked, Kaitlyn managed to pull her stone into the green zone, bringing the score to 50-40. Elena also pulled her stone into blue, narrowly missing bumping her ally's stone out; Aly called out with glee, "One hundred to forty so far!" But almost as if she had jinxed it, Lyanna's stone bumped both Della's and Elena's clean off the board, bringing that team's score back down to 50. "The tables can turn so quickly in Summoner's Court!"

Alyss fumbled for her wand, but couldn't seem to think of what spell to cast despite focusing so hard on the stones; meanwhile, Colin's Accio smacked hard into Lyanna's stone, knocking it out of the blue zone. Over the course of the round so far, the Ringmasters had gone from one hundred points to zero, and the Exterminators were up at ninety; Aly was beside herself with giggles at how quickly things had changed. But almost as quickly, Elena's second stone sailed into blue, pushing Colin's squarely over the edge into the grass.

Aly quickly set about picking up all the stones and setting them back at the start line. "That means this round ends with a score of fifty to the Ringmasters and forty to the Exterminators! It's still anyone's game."
Reducio
Erast is using Wingardium Leviosa (DC 11).
Erast WIS: [d20: 20] + 7 = 27. 27 > 11 and a critical success spell.
Erast ACC: [2d20: 4, 2] + 7 - 5 (Wing L) = 6. This means his stone does not move off the starting line and scores 0 points.

Rosaline is using Wingardium Leviosa (DC 11).
Rosaline WIS: [d20: 6] + 4 = 10. 10 < 11; the spell fails, no stone pulled.

Della is using Depulso (DC 15).
Della WIS: [d20: 12] + 11 = 23. 23 > 15, successful spell.
Della ACC: [d20: 13] + 13 + 5 (Dep) = 31. This puts her in the blue zone and scores 50 points.
Is her advantage/disadvantage nullified? Procs 9 or 10.
Della nullification: [d10: 5]. Does not proc.

Kaitlyn is using Accio (DC 14). She has +3 to ACC for MC and disadvantage to ACC from being Blocked.
Kaitlyn WIS: [d20: 8] + 10 = 18. 18 > 14, successful spell.
Kaitlyn ACC: [2d20: 6, 15] + 9 + 3 = 18. This puts her in the green zone and scores 40 points.

Elena is using Depulso (DC 15).
Elena WIS: [d20: 16] + 9 = 25. 25 > 15, successful spell.
Elena ACC: [d20: 17] + 8 + 5 (Dep) = 30. This puts her in the blue zone and scores 50 points.
Della is already in the blue zone, and they are allies, so Della has advantage on this check. Also, Evasive Maneouvres.
Della EM: [d10: 2]. Does not proc.
Della EVA: [2d20: 17, 17] + 16 = 33. 33 > 30. Della evades and both girls are still in blue.
Is Elena's advantage/disadvantage nullified? Procs 9 or 10.
Elena nullification: [d10: 1]. Does not proc.

Lyanna is using Depulso (DC 15).
Lyanna WIS: [d20: 15] + 4 = 19. 19 > 15, successful spell.
Lyanna ACC: [d20: 18] + 10 + 5 (Dep) = 33. This puts her in the blue zone and scores 50 points.
Della and Elena are both already in the blue zone, and they are allies, so those two have advantage on this check. Also, Della has Evasive Maneouvres.
Elena EVA: [2d20: 14, 4] + 7 = 21. 21 < 33. Elena is bumped off the board.
Della EM: [d10: 9]. Does not proc.
Della EVA: [2d20: 3, 13] + 16 = 29. 29 < 33. Della is also bumped off the board.
Is her advantage/disadvantage nullified? Procs 9 or 10.
Lyanna nullification: [d10: 10]. Procs! Lyanna's stone does not have advantage or disadvantage on evading entering stones.

Alyss does not have Depulso in her trunk, so she cannot cast either of her stones.

Colin is using Accio (DC 14).
Colin WIS: [d20: 5] + 16 = 21. 21 > 14, successful spell.
Colin ACC: [d20: 17] + 13 = 30. This puts him in the blue zone and scores 50 points.
Lyanna is already in the blue zone; an enemy, so no advantage or disadvantage.
Lyanna EVA: [d20: 2] + 10 = 12. 12 < 30. Lyanna is bumped off the board.

Elena is using Depulso (DC 15).
Elena WIS: [d20: 20] + 9 = 29. 29 > 15, and a critical success spell.
Elena ACC: [2d20: 10, 12] + 8 + 5 (Dep) = 25. This puts her in the blue zone and scores 50 points.
Colin, her enemy, is in this zone. Also, Colin has Evasive Maneouvres and Elena will have CP's auto-hit chance. A reminder that you do not get advantages/disadvantages towards enemy stones, so please ignore the fact that I said Colin should have gotten disadvantage in the rolls. You only get advantage/disadvantage with a teammate's stone.
Elena CP: [d10: 2]. Does not proc.
Colin EM: [d10: 9]. Does not proc.
Colin EVA: [d20: 14] + 7 = 21. 21 < 25. Colin is bonked out of the zone.
Stone nullification does not matter because Elena is the last one.

Final stones left standing: Elena in 50, Kaitlyn in 40.
KOB Fouls
While Aly was setting back the stones for the next round, the two eldest players decided it was time to be dirty, dirty cheaters whilst her back was turned. Colin moved first towards Lyanna, perhaps for revenge from her block earlier, but he missed, perhaps because the younger girl was already leaving the stage for her time-out (or perhaps just because he had bad aim). Aly heard the scuffling of feet and whirled around, but not in time to catch Colin's egregious attempt at a foul; she narrowed her eyes at him...

...and, because she had turned around, she was easily able to see Della body-check Colin directly off the stage. The blonde's snake had given her some advice on exactly where to strike, and strike the Gryffindor did, sending Colin flying into the grass. Aly pointed at him first. "McCoire! I thought I was very clear about this. If you leave the stage without my express permission, you're out for the rest of the match. I thought you wanted to play." And then her accusatory finger turned to Della. "And Barfield, I'll remind you that physical contact with other players is strictly prohibited! For helping him off the stage, you can come down here with me and Oak and have a good think about how you'll follow the rules better in the future."

Finally, she turned to the bench, pointing randomly at the redhead sitting there. "All right, Merrick, you're up!"
Reducio
Tatsu selected an initiative order of Colin first and then Della.

Colin is attempting to shove Lyanna.
Colin ACC: [d20: 4] + 13 = 17.
Lyanna EVA: [d20: 10] + 10 = 20.
20 > 17. Lyanna evades!
Is Colin caught? Because of Wolf's Grace, he can roll (with +1, but not advantage) to beat this Cheat DC of 19.
Colin WIS: [d20: 8] + 16 + 1 = 25. 25 > 19; he's not caught.

Della is attempting to shove Colin.
Her pet snake spied on him, giving her advantage on this roll.
Colin EM: [d10: 2]. Does not proc.
Della CP: [d10: 2]. Does not proc.
Della ACC: [2d20: 12, 19] + 13 = 32.
Colin EVA: [d20: 1] + 7 = 8.
32 > 8. Colin is shoved and KOB!
Della is automatically caught because she doesn't have any cheating abilities and must take a time-out next round.

Outcome
  • The second-strings all fail to strategize.
  • Kaitlyn lands her stone in green and scores 40 points for the Exterminators.
  • Elena lands her second stone in blue and scores 50 points for the Ringmasters.
  • Everyone else's stones are bumped off or not successfully summoned.
  • Rosaline fails to cast Finite Incantatem on Della.
  • Kaitlyn successfully casts Expelliarmus on Meiyu, causing her to lose her wand.
  • Erast fails to drink Wit-Sharpening Potion (not in trunk).
  • Lyanna successfully Blocks Kaitlyn and is caught; will need to take a time-out in Round 2.
  • Colin fails to shove Lyanna, but is not caught.
  • Della shoves Colin (who is now KOB) and is caught; will need to take a time-out in Round 2.
  • Cecilia joins the stage as the randomly selected second-string player.

Those on time-outs have been removed from the list for this next round. Meiyu can have a max of one summon if she picks up her wand. We are sticking to the two-action system for at least this one round, and we'll see if I want to change it for the third round, but it seems to be working so far!

Changes that are being made:
  • The amount of points to win has been reduced to 300, and there has been a 5-round cap implemented, so whichever comes first ends the game.
  • Fouls are being marked so that it is clear when they are rolled in the initiative.
  • Trunks have been locked, aka copied into a document, so if you try to add more spells/potions to your trunk now you will not be able to. (I mean, they'll still be in your trunk, but you can't use any new additions as they won't be on my list.)
  • I rolled this round with an initiative roll for attacks, but looking back on my rolls, I'm not sure I like that; it seems too OP. I will from now on be rolling attack rounds like Bludger rounds - they're all at the same time and all the effects take place after that section. sorry Meiyu lol I have added this to the rules, noting that KOB fouls are the only ones with an initiative roll, similar to Quidditch.
  • I have specified the use of Finite Incantatem in the system and specified what will happen on critical fails in the future.
  • From now on, when a stone enters a zone with multiple other stones already in it, they will not hit both unless they crit successed the ACC roll to enter. Tatsu will choose which stone they hit. I think that makes more sense than auto-knocking out everyone.

This game was not easy, that was for sure. He cast a glance at the fellow first year on the bench with him, before looking back at the game. He was quiet for a moment before he spoke up. «Okay, so what if…» No, that wouldn’t work. It was as if every time he thought he understood something, a missed element caught his attention. «Maybe Della could…» He silenced himself just as he realized his plan once more wouldn’t work. With the frustration building he kicked a bit at the ground in front of him. How were they supposed to accomplish anything on the bench when he didn’t even understand the game? Dragging a hand through his hair he turned to the slytherin. «Any ideas?»

The rat that had been a fellow prefect had foiled her intended actions, irritation becoming evident of Meiyu’s face as she tossed a scowl the moment her precious wand had fallen onto the platform. If it had not been for her will to win and scatter away back to the confides of her dormitory, she would of screwed her teammates over and brawled the girl then and there.

Colin’s foul stench and dog like presence only contributed as an aggravating factor to her worsening mood. Had it not been for the presence of Elena Clark, who had been on her team, Meiyu would of attacked him too.

For now, her imagination would suffice.

Cecilia offered Rosaline and Erast a brief, but sincere smile in response to their chimes. “Let’s do that, please,” she nodded, practically pleading to be relieved from the heat upon hearing Rosaline’s suggestion. Alas, she would have to live with the consequences of her commitments for now. Keeping up with the game proved to be difficult when she hardly knew anything about the rules. Cecilia decided that it would be best to turn her attention to strategy.

“Oh! you know what would be a great idea? Colin could–” her voice trailed off as she watched him tumble into the grass. So much for planning. Fresh out of ideas, Cecilia let out a deep sigh. Perhaps it was best if she simply stuck to Quidditch.

Not long after, she heard her name and promptly lifted her chin. For a moment, Cecilia stared at Aly like a deer in headlights before slowly nodding. Welp.
