Basic of Role Playing
These are things about Avis that your student can notice or observe about her, without my permission.
Reducio
- Avis is average height, but she holds herself as high as she can, both from posture habits and a need to feel included.
- Avis' posture is usually impeccable, and you won't see her slouch unless you sneak up on her.
- Avis' eyes are a bit too close together, which has the effect of making her look skeptical.
- Her resting face is sort of a glare
- If Avis laughs, it is really something. Imagine a screaming hyena mixed with a pig. It isn't a belly laugh, nor is it revolting to listen to, but it's pretty odd and funny in its own right.
- When Avis is alone, she tends to softly hum. If you are coming up on her you are welcome to say she is humming a soft classical song.
- She is incredibly neat, with hardly a hair out of place, but not in a showy type way. She rarely wears anything that might be considered "trendy" If she isn't wearing her school uniform she will be wearing a dark blue tunic and black pants. Her only real accessory is a dark blue bandana.

Life Before Hogwarts
"Family is like music, some high notes, some low notes, but always a beautiful song." — Unknown
History:
ReducioAvis’ paternal grandmother (Ehani) and grandfather (Jeevan) immigrated to England from Nepal in 1996, along with their kids, the then 8-year-old Kiran, Avis’ dad, and the then 2-year-old Aina, her aunt. They originally moved to London, with Ehani raising her kids, and Jeevan working in construction whilst learning English. In 2001, when Kiran turned twelve, the family moved to Harrow, Jeevan opened his Carpentry Shop (Brilliantly named Marlong Carpentry), with Ehani working in the back, decent at woodworking herself, as both kids were off to Primary School. In 2003 the shop hired its first employee, a man named Holden. Kiran, now 13, also began to help out around the shop.
In 2006, a now 18-year-old Kiran began to work full time, and Aina, now 14, also helped out, allowing Ehani to start working at a nearby library, shelving books and finally trying to learn English. She didn't really succeed. Kiran met Ava Ernest, Avis’ mother, in the shop one day in 2007, and the two got married in 2009, renting a small apartment (on the 5th floor, with no elevator) in an old but clean building. Her mother’s background is pretty vague, as I’d like to keep open opportunities.
In 2010, it became clear that Holden had been stealing money from the Marlongs, and rumors began to fly, a source of scandal in the Marlongs’ circles. It was a lot of money. Aina, ever the rebel, avoided the problems by running off to college. We’ll see how that works out for her. With help from Ava and her dad, Jeevan managed to rebuild his business, before deciding in 2015 to retire. He began to adopt Holden as a word of surprise, (“What in holden name, for holdens sake”), and Kiran, Avia, and Alaina eventually adopted the phrase. Avis was born in 2013, her sister Alaina in 2014. Aina graduated college at this point, with a major that I will figure out later, and did something. Of what, I’m sure I’ll think of at some point but this is really about Avis isn’t it?
Kiran took over the business, after having bought it for one pound from his father. In 2019, many things happened all at once. Avis was…well…somewhat blamed for the accident, (Written Here), and she and her sister were pulled out of school and began to be homeschooled. Her best friend at the time, Ellie, completely ditched her, and a young Avis didn’t really understand it, and she became suspicious of everyone else, having difficulty trusting others. Her father’s store was also booming, and he was finally forced to hire an employee, a man by the name of Daniel, who was paid in part by his young daughter, Avis' age, who was homeschooled with the girls. In 2020, Daniel and Maria moved to a nicer house soon after the death of his wife. (Kiran ever the one to pay his employees before himself), and in 2021, the Marlongs followed, purposely moving down the street from Maria’s house. Avis’ favorite place in her new house was a little nook her mom had made her in the basement, for her to do her reading and homework, without anyone bothering her. Avis had never left her little town before coming to Hogwarts, she never needed to, but she always felt like she had a little retreat to can her own. When she was nine, she created a cipher of symbols that she planned to use to write in a diary, but it turns out journaling was not for Avis, and instead, she just wrote scattered phrases. She still has this cipher memorized and uses it occasionally.
Avis loved and hated homeschooling. She loved it because she didn’t have to wait for other students, and she hated it because her mother wasn’t the type to go light on her. She became somewhat ahead of her age group, simply by not having twenty other kids in her class, but by how much, she didn’t ever really know. Her mother was very strict and as such Avis has learned the very best ways to be sneaky, but is also very clean and neat.
She did Tae-Kwon-Do, although her lack of athleticism led to a very long journey with little reward and little friends. She also played the trumpet, saxophone, and piano and is curious to see if she can find one at Hogwarts. Her sister Alaina also plays flute, though not to the depth that Avis plays. Alaina, being only a year and a half younger, Avis and she had a relationship close to that of twins, and have never been apart for long.
She sleeps in the same room as Alaina, oftentimes with the addition of Maria, who always had an overnight bag packed. In general, the girls went to bed an hour earlier than they really needed to, as all knew that there would be at least an hour of chatting before sleeping. Years of these conversations had taught her that extended silence was nothing to create awkwardness, simply a moment for both sides to think, creating a more fruitful conversation. It had also taught her that sometimes people can fall asleep in the middle of a sentence. Avis, if she wants to, could always fall asleep in the blink of an eye, and she sleeps straight on her back, arms at her sides like a board, but when she wants to stay awake she would curl up on her side, a position she couldn’t fall asleep on.Family:
