The wind had a bite to it this time of year. The kind that hinted to the colder days that were only bound to follow, blowing strands of dark hair from Iris' face as she walked silently to the courtyard. Bundled in a thick coat and gloves, however, the chill would have to work extra hard if it wanted to succeed.

Apart from the few students that had also dwindled out, Iris was alone. Her steps echoed faintly against the cobblestone, each one unhurried, as if she had all the time in the world. That part was true, caught up in whatever assignments had been called for in the week. Studying was a decent enough past time, though even charms had its limits.

So instead she took up people watching, a suitable escape from what other priorities chased her. Faces passed in and out, ones she knew and other's she didn't. Minutes that had begun to feel like hours ticked away, just until something actually worth noting managed to catch her eye. Blue streaks woven into brunette hair, a muggle practice by the looks of it; playing with their appearance like a watered down animagus. Had it been anyone else, Iris would've paid a fraction of attention to them altogether. But she knew this girl, her face a frequent theme in wherever Iris dared stepped her foot to.

"You. What's your name?" She approached the student gracefully, posture composed as the words slipped from her lips. There was no hostility, no twinge of aggression; but she was curious. From what she knew, or had rather seen, the first year had a mouth. In fact not far different from Iris herself, though the thirteen year old had learned well not to let it cause a scene. The bitter things she'd said to that boy in the classroom, well Iris could claim no similarity in that regard. Maybe that was what drew her in. Just why was this girl so harsh?

Avis crossed the courtyard after lunch, her cloak flying behind her, walking purposefully. She didn't have a purpose, as the two were very different, at least in Avis' mind. Walking with a purpose puts you under the control of a schedule while walking purposefully creates an air of confidence for those around you. So she walked, purposefully, until a second year stepped in front of her. Inwardly, Avis groaned. Not this girl again, she was not in the mood for an argument. But on the outside, Avis kept herself composed. She knew this Ravenclaw but hadn't had a chance to observe her truly, and she had no reason to escape or leave. She was thin, with olive skin and a smattering of freckles, and wintery clothes. It was a bit early for that, Avis thought. The second year. held herself polite and strong, with hidden defiance.
"You. What's your name?"
Avis looked up at the girl and glared, preparing for a scolding. Except, it never came. She was asking with a curious tone, not an accusatory one. Still, she wouldn't give this girl anything until she figured out exactly what this girl wanted. She stared at the girl as if trying to look into her soul.
"Avis" She tilted her head, daring this girl to make another comment.

Iris watched the girl— Avis, closely. The tilt of her head, the slight tension that sharpened her gaze. “Avis.” She repeated the name slowly, like she was turning it over in her mind. She'd expected more resistance, some sharp comment, maybe even a sneer. Instead, nothing.

“You seem to make habit of drawing attention to yourself.” The words lingered between them, sharp yet smooth like the edge of a knife not yet drawn. Taking a step closer, the soft crunch of her flats broke whatever silence stood. Iris had seen plenty of students throw tantrums, act out for attention, but there was something more calculated about this one. Her defiance wasn’t reckless, not entirely. It had purpose, even if that purpose was wrapped in an almost juvenile stubbornness.

“I’m curious.” Tilting her head slightly, dark hair swayed with the motion. “Do you think you're better?” The question hung in the air, heavy and pointed. Hardly mocking, but there was distinct challenge there. She wasn’t here to scold or reprimand— in truth Iris couldn’t care any less about classroom dynamics. This wasn’t about the boy Avis had insulted, it was something else. Something that simmered beneath the surface of their brief exchanges. "Better yet, do you think you know better?" She took a pause, no longer than a few seconds.

“Because I'll tell you. It looks messy.”

The girl repeated Avis' name as if it were an exotic dish, tasting it, rolling it over her tongue, unsure if it was good or bad. Avis assumed the answer to that depended on the movement of this conversation.

“You seem to make habit of drawing attention to yourself.” It was a fragile sentence, either meant to rile her up or drag her down. Cold, but demanding. Iris took another step forward, daring Avis to lose her temper. A statement of fact, begging for a loss of logic and a rambling defense. And the best response to that was one that would knock the questioner off guard.

"Yeah, I draw your attention to my right hand so you can't see what I'm doing with my left." She snapped her right hand in the air and slipped her left behind her back, speaking in a monotone voice, careful not to let her amusement slip in. It was utterly untrue, Avis was not capable of sleight of hand, nor was she secretly doing anything behind her back, but it would hopefully make the girl a little bit uneasy, especially paired with the piercing glare directly into the girls eyes.

“Do you think you're better? Better yet, do you think you know better?...Because I'll tell you. It looks messy." Avis stepped up the girl, closing the gap, which had the unfortunate effect of highlighting the height difference, but Avis tried not to be bothered by that fact. The question stopped her, though. She wasn't sure. Did she think she was better than this girl? Did she think she knew better? About the tourniquet, without a doubt. There was a pause before Avis answered, seconds of silence, as she simply stared at the girl and turned over the questions in her head, before slowly answering, "I may believe I am smarter. I may believe I am tougher. I may believe that I am more. But I do not believe I am better."
