CL BROOM RACING - HUFFLEPUFF vs. SLYTHERIN - FALL 2022

It was here. June Selwyn's first ever broom race. Ever. Ever in the history of her life. She was hardly able to sleep the night prior, but it didn't matter now, she was energized in full. June looked around at her team as they gathered at the start of the race, unable to help feeling a touch out of place. She didn't really know anyone on the team barring Vale and Colin, who she didn't know particularly well at all. And, frankly, she didn't quite have the interest in getting to know one of them any more than necessary for team synergy.

And then there was the complete and utter surprise of finding out that George Henry was not only a broom racer, but the captain of the Hufflepuff team. June couldn't help but feel a bit miffed that he never told her such a thing, but then again, she never told him that she was interested in racing, either. So she supposed it cancelled out. She gave him a wave when she spotted him, unsure of how to exactly interact with him at the moment, or if she even should interact at all.

June couldn't help but feel her chest begin to tighten as she took in the spectacle of the sport. She hadn't watched any of the races last year, she had no idea that the occasion would be so... Official. She gripped her Silver Arrow in her hands, apprehensive to mount it. She'd gotten this broom only a few months ago, and in addition to being one of the best brooms available, she wanted a Silver Arrow because Maggie Hawkins had a Silver Arrow. Perhaps it was childish for her to have gotten a matching broom with her friend. Perhaps it was a mistake to come here in the first place, to attempt A Sport. A glimmer of pink caught June's eye in the spectator stands as she looked around, and her unease melted away immediately. "Maggie!"

Maggie Hawkins was holding a large (clearly homemade) sign in the stands, a pair of green pom-poms sitting besides her.

June smiled, her breathing beginning to regulate as she looked at her best friend (she couldn't really see her eyes with the glare from her new glasses, but at that moment it didn't matter). She could do this. June mounted her broom, focus newly sharpened. She was going to race. And she was going to win.

"WOOOOO-HOOOOOP!!!" Colin laughed as he skipped down to the broom racing course, his new Doc Martens kicking up the dust, and his eyes ever on the lookout for Dan Palmer, shoe incinerator extraordinaire. Slytherin green cloak and jumper marked his beloved House while his unruly blond hair and black and green kilt bounced merrily with each bounding skip.

He checked out the stands as he got close. He could make out a good mixture of all houses, and some signs and house pennants waving about in support one or the other competing house. He recognised two Slythins right away, Lily Blaze and Maggie Hawkins. The latter had a made a big sign saying "Go June! (and Slytherin)" which made him smirk. He was sure June would like that!

When he got down to the starting area, Colin saw that so far only June had shown up. She was their newest racer, now occupying the position Colin himself held for his first race back in August. He trotted up to stand next to his team mate and said: "Hey June! This is so brilliant! Are you ready to face death on the racing course or what?"

He leaned his broom on his shoulder and shook out his hair. He fished a bit of Ravenclaw blue ribbon and tied his long hair up into a top knot. All except the thin braid that hung from his left temple, and at the end of that was a black feather from a raven's wing.

Finally. In one million billion years, it was finally time for one broom race, Sophie's first broom race. She wasn't as excited as she thought she would be, being bored currently at the moment. Who are these people anyway? There were Slytherins and Hufflepuffs racing, a bunch of random spectators she didn't want to pay attention to. Sooooo...... what do we do here? She looked around the place, expecting to see the rest of her team arriving (or already there) and Slytherins mounting their brooms and stuff. Why does everyone look so much more experienced than I am?

Sophie spotted in the crowd a sign saying: Go June! (And Slytherin) Nice art that girl has. She thought, tilting her head a bit.

Another year, another season of broom racing. Last year was a disaster for the Slytherin team who had no wins under their belt after many close races. However, Gray was certain that was going to change. They had learned from their mistakes and were stronger than before, if anything they had a point to prove to the rest of the houses to say that they were more than a losing team. Today was a good start to ending that streak, and Percival was going to achieve it no matter what.

A few of his teammates had already arrived and talked to each other, while one of his opponents was standing around like a lost rabbit. His eyes narrowed at her before looking away and glared at June and Colin. There was no time for talking, they both had to get their heads in the game sooner or later "Come on you two, focus on the race. The granny chat can wait until after we win" he grunted with a shake of his head, a hand going into his pocket to throw in some chewing gum to keep him occupied for the time being.

If they could win, it would surely bring them momentum leading into the next races ahead.

Making her way towards the starting line, Serena sighed softly as she stared up at the skies. The sun was shining down it seemed but there was a chill in the air that cut right to the bone. Donning one of the trees in her collection of brooms that she hurled in, she glanced over at the spectators. She never really understand why when there were usually not many familiar faces but she did it anyway. With a smile and a nod to the newest member of the team, "Hey Sophie, right? I'm Serena! Welcome to the team," She greeted her with a smile. It was kind of obvious who she was when she recognised the rest of the faces in her team, "Ready to kick butt?" She continued with a grin.

She did not know how she felt about everything. It was strange, knowing that just next week the Hexwizard trial will be starting. The other schools had been here for a while already now. Perhaps this race will help harness her competitive spirit and prepare her to take down whoever they face at the trial next week. For now, though, she kind of wanted to just get through the race. It sounded like there were different obstacles today and that was rather exciting.

Pine Chopper
This slender Scots Pine would make a fine Christmas Tree but this tree was modified with purpose. A metallic framed seat complete with windshield and stirrups has been added at the back, serving as the tree's counterweight. This sturdy, reliable tree that will definitely get the job done.

Speed: Top Speed is 6, however when you reach a speed of 6 this increases to a 10% chance that you will auto miss (with anything requiring an accuracy roll) and you will be auto-hit (with anything requiring a dodge roll).
Ability: Immune to broken broomshaft.
This broom is intended to carry multiple people. When someone uses the catch option to rescue a falling teammate, they can catch one additional teammate in a given round. This broom can carry up to four users. If the user has the ability Catch then a user can catch an indefinite number of teammates in a round, but for each person they catch after the first there is a stacking 20% auto-failure chance. Returning users to their broom is a free action for the owner of the blue bottle, but those being returned to their broom need to use their action getting to their broom. Only one person can be returned to their broom as a free action (for the owner) per round, they can use their action to return a second user however.

Outfit of the Day

After coming away with only a few acid burns and bruises from the last broom race, captain Henry flew onto the course wearing an ensemble that seemed to put style at least slightly over substance. Blinding Hufflepuff yellows and blacks flew off the tails of his long robes, flapping majestically in the wind beside his polished shoes. However, owing to a lack of Gryffindors, he wasn't wearing any makeup at all - in fact, he still had those big, bug-eyed goggles over his face. He pushed them up onto his forehead when it came time to scope out the other team.

"Oh, so now she likes flying through the air? At least now I won't get detention when I dump you in the lake!" George said, nodding out to where the course passed over the giant squid's stomping (swimming?) grounds. He stuck his tongue out to blow a raspberry at @June Selwyn, though it was clearly in good fun. "Best of luck. Mind the birds. They've been quite, ah... active."

He winked. Unnerving. Turning to his newest racer, @Sophie Verlice, he gave her a big thumbs up and a grin, just as he had for Athena before she was burned, bruised, had a spell backfire on her, and then struck by a projectile thrown by a half giant. Just a badger's lot in life - perpetual victims. "You've got this!"

----Vale arrived in her usual Vale way. There was never a race where she wouldn't come laughing glee of what torture the future may bring during a race. "Aw, don't be so crude! It looks like this race will be quite painful and terrifying to fly in. I wonder who would be lucky enough to go down first?" She clapped her hands together, slowly moving along on her broom to properly align herself at the starting line.

A large smile moved across Vale's face. "Maybe one of us is going to kick the bucket this time around!"

There was the urge again. It wouldn't go away. Just the fact that he was here made Jack want to break something...or someone. A little unknown friend in his head had made the Hufflepuff only slightly more aggressive than he was before, but of course, his anger was beyond the realm of his baseline teen angst. But yet, even with a lil' bug digging 'round his skull, Jack stood ready with a broom in hand. Today might be a bad day for some snakes.
