Peaking through the grand dark oak doors he took a deep breath of relief to notice the rehearsal room empty. It was a safe haven for all those that needed it but Matthew was never one for an audience. Smiling towards the many portraits that watched him enter he slowly edged his way towards the grand piano as the gentle autumn sun was beginning to set through the large windows lighting the room with that perfect golden glow.

Taken back to the moment he first found the room he found himself smiling. It had been the most beautiful piano he had ever seen and he hadn't played since coming to Hogwarts, unaware of the rooms existence until weeks after he settled. In fact, he hadn't even really meant to find it, the first few weeks he spent so lost that he would wander in and out of doors unknowingly but in this magical school it always led to the most brilliant surprises. The piano itself was inlayed with gold trim and carved from the most beautiful rich mahogany wood that made it gleam almost red in the sunset and had imagery of great musicians both magical and muggle on the underside of its lid. It had to be the most majestic piano he had ever seen and made his heart soar.

Typically he would come here to play classical music, he loved instrumentals and watching the strings and hammers move as he played. Today, however, he was here for a much more emotional release as it was the first year he was missing his father's birthday. Ever since his father met Sean the three of them had a tradition of making their birthday's yes days so no matter what happened that day the word no was banned. Anything the birthday boys wanted the answer was yes, even when they had no money those days were sacred and Matthew never wanted anything other than their company anyways. This year he was miles away from him and it was impossible for them to keep their tradition. Matthew's birthday had been hard enough but with his new friends he felt like he had more family than ever so he got by, this one felt different though almost like a betrayal.

He supposed that's why he was here, he couldn't be with his father but he could fill his mind with memories of him and even if he couldn't sing to him he could certainly sing for him. Sitting in the comfy leather seat stretching his fingers over the ivory keys he began to play. This was no classical instrumental like he most often filled the rehearsal room's wall with but it was certainly a classic. As he played the gentle notes of Elton John's 'Your Song' he was transported back in time to the first time he properly played it for them.

He watched in his mind, joyful tears welling up in his eyes as his father walked down the aisle to the song. One of the first things Patrick and Sean, his fathers, had bonded over was a love for Elton's music and so he knew it had to be involved in their wedding. As he reached the second verse he could see Patrick's face crying as he played in the church Sean walking down the aisle to meet him. They were a perfect match and Matthew couldn't have asked for anything more from Sean than to make his father happy which he did every second of every day. Finishing the song he remembered running up to his fathers side, he may have only been 10 but he was the proudest best man on the planet. The wedding was delayed for a solid 5 minutes as his dads thanked him for the beautiful gift, refusing to let him out of their shared embrace, it had made the hours learning it so much more worth it.

Now singing it here alone, he came back to in the room and heard the applause of the portraits around him, they were always supportive but this time he noticed many crying taking in the beautiful lyricism of the song and clearly living the memory along with him. His father may not be able to hear it but at least someone had and it had made them as emotional as it made his family. Breathing a deep sigh of longing for his family he gently dabbed the tears from his eyes.

Today was nothing special, at least, not for Ophelia. Today was a quieter Tuesday, one of the few days in which homework didn't plague her and prior commitments didn't haunt her. In fact, today was a peaceful day on which she'd decided that she'd explore the castle. She hadn't gotten to do so since coming to the school, at least, not well. So far, she'd stuck to a routine path across the palace. Occasionally, she had gone to other places, or had chased after her darling pet cat, Dove, as she'd run out of the Ravenclaw common rooms, but other than those anomalies, she'd done at Hogwarts exactly what one was supposed to do at Hogwarts. Study. Talk. Read.

As Ophelia walked around the floors that she'd previously practically never stepped foot on, she regretted her decision to shelter herself. The castle of a school was grand and pretty, and every forgotten corner was made to be seen and presented. Sometimes, she wondered how the school had become a school in the first place. If it had first been built for a majestic royal family.

Today's wandering led Ophelia to the fourth floor. Not much useful rooms were on this floor, but she kept going anyway. Ready to explore. She'd heard of the Duelling Club room before, and of the lavatories and the Rehearsal Room. But the ballroom was new, and she couldn't help taking a peek inside.

Then, Ophelia kept walking, until she was slowed by the sound of music. The Rehearsal Room! Someone must be practicing. The girl quickened her pace, her brain already trying to place what she was hearing. It's familiar, but I don't know from where.

As Ophelia entered the room, she saw a boy, around her age, playing the piano and singing the song. She hummed along with his music, her brain still on overdrive. She closed her eyes, searching her memories for the song. Usually, she remembered the lyrics to things easily, but this song must have been something she'd only ever heard once, for she pulled up blank yet again.

Suddenly, the music stopped and Ophelia abruptly opened her eyes. The portraits on the walls were clapping, and she decided to join in. Even though she hadn't recognized the song, she still appreciated the boy's talent.

Most of her wanted to turn around and flee the scene before the boy in front of her turned around, figuring out that she'd listened to him. But a small part of her knew that she wouldn't sleep tonight, instead thinking the song over and over again, trying to figure it out.

If only an electronic device worked here, I could just search up some of the lyrics that I heard the boy sing. Ophelia sighed inwardly. This definitely wasn't the first time she'd thought something like that. How she missed Muggle technology. It had really made living so much easier.

I guess I must speak with him then. Sighing once more, Ophelia cleared her throat, hoping he would turn around and not feel violated and angry. "Uh, hello there. My name is Ophelia, and hopefully, I'm not interrupting anything. I...eh, happened to be walking the halls when you were playing and heard your music. You are really talented, but I couldn't place the song."

Hopefully, that was enough for him to understand what she wanted to know.

The voice startled him so violently that he felt himself stumble straight off the back of the piano stool. Now floored with a banged head he looked up searching for the voice that had so suddenly appeared. Taking in the sight of the girl she was striking with chiselled features and a dark honey toned hair that contrasted from her pale skin but the main thing he saw was the mortified face of guilt that filled her face. Cutting the tension he began to laugh as he looked at her. "Sorry, I eh" he laughed once more "I wasn't aware you had come in. Think I was a bit lost in the music." He made sure to smile the whole time as he did so, in truth it was nice to share the moment with a real person rather than just the paintings and he wanted her to know she had no need to worry.

Clambering to his feet he tried to adjust his robes to seem somewhat presentable but really when was it ever worth it, his bundle of dark curls always gave him a dishevelled look. Reaching out a hand, cheeks a little red from embarrassment he spoke "Ophelia was it? I'm Matthew, but you can call me Clumsy I guess. It's a muggle song by a man called Elton John, he's the real talent." Matthew had never been very good at taking compliments and he certainly wasn't about to start now so as usual he dodged it.

Now that he was vertical once again, he was sure the girl must be a first year like him which made it a lot easier. Embarrassing himself in front of an older student would have had him trapped in an endless anxiety prison reliving the memory over and over again, but first years were all in it together. He had found that even the ones who grew up with magic their whole lives still sometimes were completely lost in Hogwarts. There was, however, always the worry that she was one of the pureblood purists, her sharp angular features could be read as unfriendly but she seemed to have kind eyes and was worried when he fell so he felt safe enough. Plus if she recognised the music even slightly then she or someone she knew had great taste so how bad could she possibly be.

Tilting his head towards the piano, he smiled towards the girl and said "Do you play? Music always helps me think." Honestly, he didn't know why he was asking but he had a tendency to ramble to fill the silence and it seemed the right thing to do to calm her nerves.

-Music is an addiction- Miles Davis

I don't know why, singing and playing the piano helps me to convey emotions not something other than rage and malice, something that lifts the spirits and makes you feel good... Everyone around. Music is a passion, whether it's my fingers tapping on a key or a melody that comes out of my throat and how can I put it, from my heart too. It's something that lifts my spirits and makes me smile, something that makes me want to be happy.

The rehearsal room has therefore become a second home, a place that is my fetish at the castle and a place where above all, I can make my fingers dance on the piano that adorns the room. One or today, I'll let my frail hands wander. I approached the room to play a few notes, before I heard a voice, and then two. What a magnificent melody, on this Muggle rhythm, Elthon Jonh, even! The moment I caught sight of Matthew's face, I saw that he also had a talent, like me! But there was also a girl, I don't like her just by face. "Elthon Johnson sings so well, I love him. You've got an angel's voice like him, Matthew," I said, rising from my hiding place. "Hi, it's been quite a while!"

If I had to tell you my deepest secret, I guess I'd say I never loved me right
Their Song Finished
While Archer Duncan did not play music, he enjoyed going astray within it, enjoyed the simple pleasure of being afloat on cloud nine, enjoyed watching Maman's elegant fingers prance along the piano keys, enjoyed observing the delicate needle hover and drop within a phonograph. Hover and drop. Hover and drop. Yet he had never had fingers quite long enough for the piano, quite flexible enough for the violin, quite strong enough for the drums. It was a pity he could never be included in the circle of talented musicians Hogwart's accomodated.

His fascination for the Rehearsal Room had began on a sleepless September night and a girl with feline eyes, who was most certainly, despite first thought, not a ghost nor an apparition. And what was that beautiful song again? "Dance the night away, when nobody's awake and be the last to stay." The poetic lyrics had never left his mind since that chance encounter. And the girl had not. And the dance had not either. Still, he remembered the room, remembered the petite silver birds, silently chirping on their perch atop the chandelier, the raging fireplace, constantly smelling of home, the grand windows, always allowing in light, even in the deepest of midnights.

Yet after that night, Archer had never set foot in it again.

Till music beckoned him, once more.

His voice was so young, his voice a beautiful soprano meant for the most extravagant of operas, decorated with lords in their double-breasted tuxedos, their lapels adorned with proud pins and ladies in their best cocktail dresses, their hair braided elaborately. Yet it was compacted into itself with far too much emotion. Archer could almost hear the tears that was sure to be welling in his eyes, not simply appreciation for the music, but a melancholy seemingly induced by uncalled for solitude. Archer could, painfully, relate.

He had not closed the door, but by no means did Archer intend to step inside and disturb such an alluring song, despite the temptation to ask for the title and composer. Archer closed his eyes, leaning on the wall and practically melting into its shadow, like he often does when nobody notices his presence.

Archer's quiet appreciation was shattered when a pair of footsteps approached. His eyes fluttered open to observe a girl, perhaps around his age, her eyes a soul-penetrating eyes blue, her hair a lustrous brown, beautifully playing the antithesis to her ivory skin. As she entered the Rehearsal Room, a timid humming washed into Archer's mind, falling in rhythm with the song as he closed his eyes again. A scattering of applause filled his mind as the music came to an abrupt stop and conversation began. 'Uh, hello there. My name is Ophelia, and hopefully, I'm not interrupting anything. I...eh, happened to be walking the halls when you were playing and heard your music. You are really talented, but I couldn't place the song,' the girl who must have just passed began.

Before Archer could process this information, a reverberant crash echoed through his mind, shattering his focus. He blinked open his eyes and could not help stepping forward a little and leaning into the room to witness the commotion. Wincing in sympathy at the sight of a curly-haired boy sprawled on the floor, cutting through the tension with a awkward laugh that made Archer cringe. Quickly apologising, he said, 'I wasn't aware you had come in. Think I was a bit lost in the music.' Archer nodded at those words, for he would have been in the same predicament, or perhaps, more accurately: blessing. A sense a familiarity suddenly struck Archer as he realised the boy to be a face he had seen, and probably even interacted with. However, from the distance, it was comparably more difficult to make out the memory.

'Ophelia was it? I'm Matthew, but you can call me Clumsy I guess,' the boy introduced, causing Archer to quietly curse himself and slink back into the shadows, desperately hoping he had not been recognised back. Archer Theodore Duncan and Matthew Campbell were certainly not on the best of terms. Grimacing, Archer wanted to sneak back away, but something about the music had intrigued him, and somehow, he could not force himself to take even one step out of the Rehearsal Room. Move, he told himself. There was no reason to get involved in any trouble.

Move.

Archer was caught off guard once more when a girl with fiery red hair and emerald green eyes, wearing a pink dress that seemed awfully meagre for the weather, approached the room. She smiled at Matthew, a smile that made Archer want to slip away even more, knowing she was in good acquaintance with someone who clearly disliked him.

Move.

Why bother with this?

Someone must have bothered, because he felt a pair of eyes, at least, on his turning back.

@Matthew Campbell @Ophelia Northwell @Rowan Bellegno

Note: leaving unless noticed/stopped; however, OOCly, I am hoping he gets stopped

To Matthew: I am kind of guessing how Friend or Foe may end based on how I think Matthew might respond to what I think Archer would say. In short, they won't be enemies, but would certainly be negative acquaintances. If you would like me to edit this please just shoot me an owl/dm me.

Ophelia nodded with understanding as the boy in front of her, Matthew, as he'd introduced himself, told her which song he'd been playing. A song by Elton John. She'd never listened much to his music, but she did remember her brother having a piano recital with the same tune that had just been played by the boy. That's probably why I recognised the music, but didn't recall the lyrics.

The Ravenclaw smiled self-consciously as Matthew asked about her own musical talents. She didn't know how interested he was, therefore choosing to go with a simple answer instead of a lengthy one. "I have a passion for singing, though I do not play any instrument." Then, as he had deflected her previous compliment, she added another one. "But it seems as though you have both talents."

Not knowing what else to say, Ophelia paused. In that moment, a redhead walked into the scene. She had a confidence about her that was completely opposed the Ravenclaw's personality. To her, it seemed as if the girl was assessing her, even though she hadn't even heard Ophelia speak. Or had she? How long as she been here in this room? She tried to dispel these thoughts before she started disliking the redhead girl before even meeting her, but they seemed to be stuck in her mind.

As the girl began speaking in a fashion that clearly suggested that she knew Matthew well, Ophelia began looking around the room. It was her first time in the room and she had come to explore, after all, not make friends. Or enemies, her brain supplied helpfully.

Finally, Ophelia's eyes came to rest on something moving that wasn't the portraits in the room. Moving? Is that a person? Paying more attention, she realised that she was right. A person was moving to get out of the room, though she didn't know for what reason.

She didn't know what possessed her in the moment, but she called out to the boy running out of the room. While Ophelia didn't recognise him, she didn't want him to think that she and the others were unwelcoming. Especially since they were clearly allowing others to join their conversation, as the redhead had done.

"Hey there! Where are you going?"

There was something so reassuring about the girl, and he was certain that any unfriendliness in her face was not intentional as she spoke with such a grace and kindness. Her understanding came as a breath of relief, all too often in these halls he wandered feeling misunderstood but not today, as she had seen him. It always made moments like this more special, knowing that others were there, that no one was really ever alone.

Ignoring her compliments the first time was awkward but a second would just have been dire so he settled for a simple pleasantry,"You're very kind to say so, maybe one day I can accompany you and hear yours too? If you'd like, I used to play for my fathers and it seems only fair!" The offer was genuine, he relished in consuming sheet music as much as he relished consuming magic, learning new symphonies brought new colour to the music he played. To be a musician was constantly learning new sounds and how they could move your emotions to the highest peaks and deepest lows. Music was soulful, it was a blessing and it was for everyone, music didn't discriminate if anything it empowered.

Then suddenly out of nowhere a familiar face had appeared, Rowan was always like sunshine on a rainy day and her hair glowed in the golden light that basked the room. Looking at the two girls he continued "Wow I really didn't realise Elton would attract such an audience, he is worth it though I suppose." Smiling as he began to pack up his things. Crowds made him nervous and he imagined that both of the girls had likely come to use the room themselves so he didn't want to be a bother.

Moving towards the piano for his bag he simply couldn't resist, something about the day, something about knowing his father would have loved to hear him made him intrinsically pulled to the keys once more. It was like the music was alive and tempting him back to the seat, in here he was the conductor of his own orchestra. Truthfully, the girls compliments had meant the world to him, he was used to being trouble and bad or being looked down on and underestimated but it was like they had seen through all the negative and seen who he really was. He wished more people could do that, he wouldn't let anyone know but he was starting to believe he really didn't deserve to be here. In this moment all of that just stripped away, as he bore his soul on the keys.

Picking up a new melody he began to play another of his father's favourites, Landslide by Fleetwood Mac, usually he would use a guitar but when the piano calls to you who was he to resist it. The song was a gentle song praying on the softness and intimacy letting the accompaniment accent the lyrics and compliment one another to drive the heart of the song through.

♪"Well, I've been afraid of changin'
'Cause I've built my life around you
But time makes you bolder
Even children get older
And I'm getting older too"♪

Representing perfectly his struggle, his struggle growing older away from his father and being afraid that he was losing himself but realising that actually he was doing the very opposite. He had learned more about who he was in just a few months at Hogwarts than he had and probably ever could've in the muggle world. It was a blessing beyond anything to be here. The moment was cut away though as he heard Ophelia shout towards someone "Hey there! Where are you going?" this was now getting far too much, two was intense enough but a third!

Swinging around to see who she had been talking to his heart sunk. Of all the people for it to be it would have to be someone who hated him. His face instantly reddened as he imagined the humiliation he likely was about to endure, Archer Theodore Duncan had certainly been no friend to the boy last time they had met. As if by some cruel twist of the universe, the very confidence he had just found in the song sunk away, replaced once more by the drowning feelings of being unworthy. Archer may not be Arianna but he had no love for him and it was certain this moment that started with tears in his eyes would end just the same.

Ophelia felt herself go into panic mode as Matthew suggested that she sing with him one day. She loved to sing, and she'd been told by many who'd accidentally heard her that she had an angelic voice, but it was almost impossible for her to sing in front of an audience. She could speak to people, but singing had always felt like giving away a part of herself, and she couldn't do that easily. Still, Ophelia kept a smile on her face and nodded enthusiastically, so as not to seem rude.

As Matthew began singing and playing a new song, one that Ophelia recognised well this time, she absentmindedly started humming along with him. It wasn't supposed to be loud enough for anyone to hear, but as she fell into the music, she forgot about the people around her. Instead of just humming, the words came out of her lips, soft but audible for anyone listening.

Ophelia's attention was still elsewhere, not actually on Matthew, Rowan, or the music being played, and when it stopped, she snapped to attention. Matthew was now looking at the boy that she had yelled at with an emotion similar to disappointment and worry. She looked between both the boys, wondering what history they must have for them to look at each other that way.

Archer couldn't fathom what was so morally wrong about leaving a room. It wasn't as if he was a particularly interesting character who should have remained there to be studied. It wouldn't be particularly interesting for any party if he dawdled around, awkwardly inserting himself into the midst of conversation with one of his more negative acquaintances.

Curse human curiosity. Curse his own. If only he had moved on from the room once the music had stopped. If only he had never halted his daily affairs to listen at all. The day ahead of him would stretch on perfectly fine without this interpersonal distraction.

Of course, now there was nothing he could do but publicly make his presence known, despite the uncomfortable circumstances.

The heels of his loafers clicked far too loudly on the marble floor, the silence surrounding him almost deafening. This was not that whimsical September night. It was void of a cat-eyed girl, dancing all her troubles away past midnight. It was void of their hand-hand, void of her graceful steps, leading Archer further from reality, from everything he had based himself upon, and from his own homesickness, step by step, move by move. This time, it was three pairs of eyes, judging his every action. This time, it was Matthew Campbell, a lad whose personality alone met have let to befriending, but then again… fate always has her own ideas in store, as she always does. Archer confidence, if had ever had confidence for social interactions, faltered and dropped. Anything Matthew said, the Gryffindor would back. The dynamic of friendship was obvious to the idlest observer. He paused, then walked again. Paused, then walked, his legs tentative to take him any further.

Archer halted at close to five feet away from the trio, his eyes flitted between them, analysing their postures and expressions, his hazel eyes much darker than usual, as if the chocolate brown had eaten away at the olive green. They darted across the room, hoping for some sort of distraction. Returning empty-handed, they finally connected with the ones of the two ladies. Archer straightened, hoping to try for some sort of confidence, or at the very least, politeness. The Gryffindor’s fiery red hair was bothersome in its brightness, and Archer slightly gritted his teeth as he stood still, eyes fixated on the both of them. ‘Archer Theodore Duncan, he introduced finally, his voice quieter than usual. He extended a hand to the brunette girl first, and, was she to accept and shake it, would then move on two the red-head and repeat the action. ‘Pleased to make both of your acquaintances,’ he said, pleasantly enough.

Of course, he knew the next interaction might not be as pleasant as the previous. Archer turned to Matthew and hesitated. An awkward silence hung over the air for several seconds, before Archer managed to break it with a meagre nod of recognition, saying, ‘Mister Matthew Campbell,’ his tone carrying a subtle tension. Archer gulped uncomfortably, then breathed in through his nose to calm himself. Delicately steering the conversation towards Matthew and away from any possible relation to the day in Defence Against the Dark Arts class, he complimented, ‘You are a stunning vocalist and pianist.’ He paused, his fingers nervously running down the back of the piano, trying to imagine how Maman would have played the keys. ‘Forgive me for the-’ he wavered, his hands pausing on the mahogany, in rhythm with his speech. Perhaps he had wanted to apologise for the events of their first acquaintance, but there was no sensible reason to bring up drama in front of two strangers. ‘-interruptance,’ he chose finally, ‘but I could not help but be captivated by your music.

Fate could be a rather cruel mistress and as Archer Theodore Duncan approached the group Matthew couldn't help wondering why she had brought upon him such misery. The day was hard enough as it was, but he supposed that was the nature of his life, there was always more suffering to endure. Maybe that was the way of everyone's lives.

The gold glint that lay in his hazel eyes seemed to diminish at the sight of the boy and his eyes frantically searched the room seemingly looking for something but found nothing. Archer had come alone, no backup, no purists ready to humiliate him. As he took the boy in he couldn't help but lose himself in the discomfort of the situation, both seeming like they wanted to disappear into the shadows as much as the other. He never spoke about what happened that day, it upset him too much and his outlook on purebloods was so muddied now, there were purists but there were also those that wanted nothing more than an equal society. His cheeks began to redden embarrassed by his past behaviour and yet the pride of standing up for himself still remained, why must my mind constantly be at war with itself the thought filling his head while Archer introduced himself to the girls.

Whatever issues Archer and he had it was not his place to stain his name with them. The event had happened over a month ago and Matthew had grown exponentially since so it wasn't fair to assume Archer hadn't. Still the awkwardness hung in the air practically sucking the air from his lungs unable to breath. Then it came, the boys dark eyes rested upon him and his mind raced with the thousand possibilities of what was about to come.

Could he be mocking him or did he really believe Matthew talented, it was an endless dilemma in his head that couldn't be answered. Who was Archer Duncan? He had all the makings an intelligence of being an incredible person and yet his past was against him. There was a simple way of finding out and Matthew found his guard up in natural defence as he said a subtle sadness in his tone, "Muggle music has a great deal of beauty in it, perhaps you would be interested. I don't suppose you play too?" Matthew was making a real effort to be kind and not let his emotions get out of control, calming himself by rubbing the corner of his hand in a soothing motion. He meant the question genuinely, there was no malice, no intent to rehash the argument they had had months prior just pure, unfiltered, hope that Archer was being genuine.

Regarding him with an outstretched hand he flashed a polite smile towards the boy and said "Archer, it's been a while. I hope you're well. Thank you, that means a lot." making sure to stress addressing him by his true name unlike the past. Truly he wasn't sure if his follow up was true, generally Matthew wished everyone well but the wound between them was deep, and yet he had always been taught there was no wound that could not be healed. In accepting the compliment he had to bite his lip not to add a "from you", it wasn't the time nor was it who he wanted to be and it would have ruined the very attempt at cutting the tension he had just made.

Turning back towards Ophelia his smile growing large, full of energy and life, "I heard you singing with me! You must tell me one of your favourites, I believe Archer here is fairly new to muggle music so we must impress him, if you're wanting to stay that is?" his gaze returning to the boy who stood as regal and postured as always. Swinging back towards the piano he stretched his fingers, a few bones cracking as he did and smiled warmly, genuinely.
