2023/24, Stage 2 Ravenclaw vs Hufflepuff: Match 2

Damn that spell from Amadea stung. Suspiciously more than previous duels where she had been hit with an identical spell to that one. Amadea must be better in casting than Del had remembered her to be. Not so much that she underestimated her, just that she must have improved quite a lot since her last interaction with Amadea in a duelling standpoint.

Well his spell had ALMOST hit. That was sort of an accomplishment? The rest of his team were not nearly so lucky. Amadea and Lindsey were both tripped by Delilah, which made it very hard to avoid the spells coming their way. Before Jake knew it, Lindsey had been lit on fire, and Amadea had her arms bound! Everything happened so fast, Jake faltered for a moment, but just a moment. Nobody had targeted him that round, and there was still time to put the pressure back on Ravenclaw. "A-Anybody need help?" Jake called out to his team-mates, hoping they'd be able to get back to their feet before too long, that Lindsey's fire wouldn't spread, and that Amadea could free her hands.

Pride, as fleeting as it could be amid the exchange of combat, swelled in her chest after drawing Amadea's wrists to a tight bind. The intent was to oppress their hardest hitter, but that wasn't particularly unique nor clever, for Hufflepuff had clearly attempted the same. In a near simultaneous movement, Phaedra sidestepped both a knockback jinx and ducked before that despised blindfold; mouth scrunching in bitter annoyance that, yet again, fire always drew her way. Rolling the joints of her wrist for another strike, she eyed her partners for a sign. It was due time to shake things up...but how?

Clearly the focus of splitting her spell had cost Amadea the focus of dodging spells because as soon as the spells had left her wand, she felt her wrists flying together, binding as the effect of Phaedra's spell took place. Groaning against the ties, she fought the urge to scream in annoyance. Of course it was smart of the Ravenclaws to try to take out the strongest opponent; her own team had taken a similar approach. But now, she was at a disadvantage. Until she could detangle these ties and break free, Amadea would be writhing around on the piste uselessly. Hopefully her teammates could pick up her slack.

If there was one sure rule of duelling, and especially three on three matches, it was that everything could change like that. You blinked and suddenly the entire equilibrium had been thrown. It happened sometimes in the younger duels, too, but that was usually just when someone went down because they weren't used to taking hits. In these older duels, it was completely driven by the sheer power of the duellists.

The set-up was fairly simple, not even ridiculously in Ravenclaw's favor. Amadea was out for the moment, which was definitely a loss, Hufflepuff's oldest player temporarily down for the count. Jake was trying to help her break free, a solid strategy especially this early in the game, because the sooner they were all back, the sooner they could really press their offense.

The set-up was fairly simple, just three wands pointed at the same person with incantations they'd all been saying for years. Lindsey was just trying to return some of that fire, maintain pressure while Amadea and Jake dealt with the Fulgari situation.

And then Lindsey was down. It wasn't that simple in how it happened, even if it was horribly fast. Delilah landed a solid Flipendo, followed up by a torrent of wind from Phaedra, winds whipping aggressively but under her control so that they struck Lindsey, blew away the crackling clouds, and snuck sideways to Jake. There were a few casts every stage to be marvelled at; this was one of them. And finally, in the midst of that chaos, Aida half-landed an extra Flipendo that Lindsey couldn't quite avoid, and coupled with the fire, that was entirely too much.

"Pause!" Bridget called quickly, eyeing the storm cloud apprehensively. Luckily it only rumbled a bit as medics came to tend to Lindsey, a shade over the remaining Hufflepuffs. With Amadea still bound, it wasn't looking very good for them, but the rule of duelling did apply to underdogs, too. If you were quick and lucky. "Alright, resume."

As Lindsey fell, Aida clapped loudly with a shriek.

"Wow, Phaedra, that was sooo cool! Show me how to do that, please please!!" With a small bounce and a spin, Aida flashed a smile at Delilah, who had also landed a fine assault. "Wowww, you guys... I guess all that practice is finally paying off, huh? Good job, Delilah!"

Aida's spell had similarly gone off successfully, but with less textbook accuracy. Still, even squeaking by with a glancing hit was sufficient to cut down the Hufflepuffs' numbers. Things were looking fine for the Ravenclaw team, but the white wix wasn't about to take their lead for granted. A satisfied hoot came from the corner of the room, and Aida readied their wand once more.

Everything happened so fast... Jake, seeing Amadea bound, turned to her to try to help get rid of the magical cords with a counter spell. He only took his eyes off the other team for a second. Then a gust of wind threatened to blow him backwards. He stumbled, maintaining his footing, but he was helpless to prevent the barrage of spells barrelling towards Lindsey. One by one they collided with her, knocking her backwards. Two knockbacks and a gust of wind. He reached out an arm but it took all he had to remain standing in the gust, and he watched her fall and hit the ground, and not get back up. She was down, and not moving...He watched anxiously as she was tended to and taken to safety.

His eyes rose. Amadea was still struggling with the cords. Lindsey was down. And then there was Jake, defending his team from a whole onslaught of Ravenclaws.

Things were not looking so good for the Hufflepuff team. Amadea struggled against the cords binding her, but seemed unable to get free. She wished so badly she could rejoin the duel, as they were now a teammate down, but until she could grapple with these ropes, there was not much that she could do. All Amadea could hope for was that the ropes would unbind soon enough, with the help from Jake's spell and she could rejoin him and lead their team to victory.

A fearsome vortex erupted from Phaedra’s wand, engulfing the stage in hurricane-like winds. Its sheer power was that of a grand production, only overshadowed by the collapse and retrieval of Lindsey’s limp body from the stage. It felt good not to be in her place. Tucking wild flyaway strands behind her ears, Phaedra used the lull in sparring to regard Aida with a curious glance. “Then watch and learn.” An eccentric wix, that one was.

28th January 2024 - Morning
It was a bit of a calm after the storm, taking into consideration that duelling was still a very violent sport. Amadea kept trying at her binds, finally getting either the leverage or willpower she needed to snap out of them so Jake would not have to stand alone anymore. If he managed to stand much longer at all, that was; Aida tapped into another fire spell, which seemed to be something of a favorite of theirs, and lit the Hufflepuff. Jake was starting to look considerably worse for wear.

He did nail Delilah with a Flipendo, though, which might have stunned her enough to stop her from casting. That or she'd lost her concentration, sometimes it was hard to tell. But even without Delilah acting, Phaedra was evidently prepared to cast for both of them. Her wand produced two entirely different spells. Bridget had never actually seen that happen before.

Amadea avoided the first smoothly, another Fulgari, which was good news for her team and just for her in general, because no one liked standing there useless the whole time. But the second, an unexpected Expelliarmus, found its way through and rendered her temporarily useless, anyway. Wands weren't especially helpful when they were somewhere on the floor behind you; Jake would have to hold down the fort again.
