Deep in thought she was, thinking about her last Quidditch match and her parents' reaction to it. In that moment of trance, she had failed to notice that things were going wrong at the lake. It was only when a red sparks had shot into the air that she snapped out of her trance. It left her staring as it reached towards the sky before realizing that it had meant someone was in danger and judging by the direction of it, it came from the lake where the people are enjoying the boat.

She could hear some splash like something or maybe, even someone had fallen off of their boat. That proves to be true when she could no longer see the silhouette of a couple of people on their boats. Knowing her own strength, she doubts that she could even help in pulling them up but she has to do something correct? But is she willing enough to risk her life for some strangers? No, not really.

Then there has to be a more effective way of doing this but this does mean, if she wants to help, then she has to get on a boat and take the risk of falling in. Surely someone had already made their move, maybe an older student or even a professor. She is still a second year, her arsenal of spells are still limited and she doubts that the ones she knows are enough to drag out a drowning person. If she does something now then she might just add more to the count of people that had fallen and needed rescue. She started walking around the shorelines though, looking over to the lake while keeping an eye out on anyone that she could at least help if they managed to swim back to land.

Renelle couldn’t really swim that well. There wasn’t a particular reason for that, she had just never bothered to learn very hard; after all, drowning was such a rarity in wizarding households, she’d never expected to need to use it. As she submerged in the freezing water of the Great Lake, though, she really wished she had taken the effort to master the sport before, because she was really regretting her decision now.

It was lucky, then, that Astra had managed to free herself quite quickly. It hadn’t been long before the Ravenclaw felt her friend break free of whatever was attempting to drag her down- kind of made her feel stupid for being so dramatic earlier, and diving down like Astra needed her help at all. Consoling herself that she had probably aided at least a little in the escape had been a valiant effort, but did not make her feel better. At all.

The moment they fell onto the boat, soaked and exhausted, Astra clamped a hand on Renelle’s shoulder, as if forcing her to look at the Slytherin. But she just stared determinedly over Astra’s head (that height had finally come in handy), not meeting her eyes. How could she? After all that she had done? It was not surprisingly that Astra would try to make her feel better, tell her it wasn’t her fault. She had always been like that. And Renelle loved her for it. She just couldn’t believe her words.

She pryed Astra’s hand off softly, then turned to gaze over at the scene unfolding in front them. She hated herself for this, but she felt almost grateful that so many students had landed in trouble- it would put off the inevitable awkward conversation. With any luck, it would be forgotten by the time this all blew over.

“We should help, right?” She glanced over at Astra, then quickly turned back. “We don’t know any useful spells, so that kind of narrows it down a bit….” She peered over the edge of the boat. “Would it be stupid if we just jumped right in again, and tried to pull someone out?” But Astra literally just got out of a life-and-death situation there… She pulled out her wand- not that it would do her much good in this situation, what with Astra already shooting sparks to signal their distress. “Or maybe I could go in and try to help someone.” True, she was no expert in the sport of swimming, but she could still keep herself afloat, if barely.

Why was she even considering risking her life for some random student she didn’t know? The sudden question popped into Renelle’s head, making her pause. It definitely wasn’t that she was some sort of noble, self-sacrificing person- of course, she wouldn’t just stand by and watch someone die, but in this case, there were plenty of other people around. No one would blame her if she took a back seat.

The answer was literally dripping water right behind her. She felt her heart crawl into her throat. I just wanna get away from my best friend. Away from the guilt, the embarrassment, the anger with herself… It was just too much. She blinked hard. “Um, yeah. It was no problem.” Though without me, you wouldn’t have been in that situation at all…. “So about all these drowning little people….”

Harder and faster I pushed myself to run, leaping in some places where my feet would get too cut up and would result in crippling me if I didn't watch my step. Stumbling once or twice on the sedimentary sand, I caught myself and then righted my momentum for a scene that I was beginning to piece together. There were boats floating on the lake, so many of them turned over and no sign of anyone in or near any of them. The lanterns that peacefully filled the sky betrayed the obvious sense of looming danger that was present here; something terrible had happened or else why raise the alarm of red sparks intended to call for more mature help the likes of adults or elder students such as myself?

Well I had learned from the past that expecting adult aid was something that would most likely only end in more people getting hurt. They simply weren't fast enough compared to the children who took care of the children. How in the world had such people managed to score jobs at this sort of place after all, anyways?

Envenomed thoughts aside, I was finally coming upon the bulk of the celebration and observing bystanders on the shoreline. Without slowing or stopping my pace, I bellowed towards them, uncaring of how insane I must have looked wearing nothing but a sweatshirt and sweatpants. "WHO SET OFF THAT PERICULUM?!"

I didn't really care if the suddenness of my approach or the way that I was charging towards several children who were both a good deal smaller and younger than me was possibly scaring some of them. My gaze was flicking around to locate someone that potentially had the best idea of what was happening. I found it in the form of a younger kid who was simply looking out at the strewn lake but seemingly not doing anything about it. Well, at least one of us had a good sense of self-preservation. "Hey!" I broke my stride, sucking a bit of air as I did so to try and calm my heart rate ever so slightly. I waved the kid down [Miharu], panting a bit as I approached. "Hey! Do you know what's going on here? Who set off the flare and why are the boats overturned?" Bad to be asking so many questions, I knew, but I had to get at least some detail on what was going on before I threw myself into the fray headfirst. But, then again, that was somewhat of a wishful thought considering my nature, wasn't it?

What little information I got out of the much smaller student--I was indeed mostly only half-listening as my mind began to race and I began to consider my possibilities--I only nodded quickly along with before waving my hands to cut her off. We didn't have any more time for painting the scene; at least now I knew what I would be dealing with, hopefully. "Okayokayokay... Okay. Here's the plan, alright?" I interrupted. "Sorry." At least an apology would be polite, right? "You stay put unless you want to help out; don't become someone else I have to save, keep yourself safe." Wasn't that always the first rule of first aid, after all? "Make sure the kids that get to land are breathing, and if they aren't start doing CPR if you know it. If you don't, lay them in the recovery position on their side and try to basically Heimlich maneuver the water out of their lungs, alright? If you can't do that, get a teacher or yell at me to come back so I can help them directly. My name is Romeo. Got it?

By now my hands were gently rested on both of the kid's shoulders, making very deliberate and dead-serious eye contact with searing blue eyes that willed for her to understand the situation that were were currently in. There was no way that I could have either of us make an error now. If either of us befell danger, the situation would become far more complex and dangerous than it already was. "Got it?" I repeated again, with a small shake just to make sure that I was being paid attention to. It would be hard to find a way not to, to be honest. I nodded once more, making sure that we were on the same page.

"Good."

I spun as quickly as I could and began to run for the lake, ripping off my sweatshirt and practically tripping out of my sweatpants before reaching the edge of the water with my wand in hand. I didn't slow or falter as I ran off the farthest spur from the shore, aiming to get as much distance as possible so that I could get as close as I could to the overturned boats and the kids that needed to get pulled to shore. As I leapt into the air and began to arc over the glassy black water, I incanted with a shout. "ASPIRA!"

Then, before I knew if I had succeeded or failed in creating an oxygen reserve for myself via the spell, I stuck my wand--which was feebly quivering with the force of trying to produce magic for me in its rapidly wilting state--between my teeth and then dove into the frigid darkness below. 'Alright. Who's first, then?' I issued out a silent challenge to the deep. Hang tight, whoever was down there. Just a little bit longer... Valya, I swear to God...

When the boats took off and the lanterns were let up, Daniel let himself admire the night sky and enjoy the fresh air. What a night. Not much exactly happened except talking to those English kids. Daniel took a glance at the lake and saw Harmony's bright blue cape. Pretty, she was. The Montgomery boy seemed to be having a pretty disconnected conversation with her, probably staring into the lake.

Daniel then caught sight of a light pink dress as a girl entered the area. Had she come from the banquet, or had she just recently arrived? Regardless, her outfit was an eye-catcher. It wasn't like those flowy ball gowns those little girls came in with, but more fitting and modest. Probably a traditional dress of some sort.

Resolving himself to talk to her, he began walking. But the splash took his surprise and he froze for a bit while watching everything unfold. First, two people didn't resurface. When they did manage to come back up for air, another seven people fell into the lake and only one of them resurfaced. Goodness, could these people not swim?

Daniel saw the girl with a pink dress stay by the shore and he jogged over to her. "You help?" he said, albeit somewhat slowly as the words felt foreign on his tongue.

Then, a tall (very tall... Daniel was a bit intimidated but also awed) man came barging in, yelling at her before he jumped into the lake. Daniel gave a bit of a side-eye. Not even a polite greeting? He turned to the girl. "Bit rude, right?"

He looked out into the lake. Jumping in to help might be a bit too bold of him at the moment; a total of four people plus those still in the lake who resurfaced were already helping, so did they really need his?

One moment she was just walking by the shoreline and keeping an eye on possible people that might've swam towards land and the next she was facing an older student [Romeo Giovanni Marchonné] that she doesn't even know. His towering figure was intimidating for her and his approach had taken her by surprise. It took a while before she could even form words to say back to him when he asked what was going on.

Not like she knows a lot about what's going on aside from people had fallen off of their boat and so that's what she told him although she doesn't know the reason why they were overturned. She couldn't exactly see what's going on under the water and the area where the boats are.

Miharu doesn't know if he was listening to her but she did try her best in explaining. Thank god she managed to say all that in coherent English despite being flustered and taken by surprise. "Y-Yes!" Was all she could say when the boy gave her instructions and told her to stay put. She was planning on staying on land, she's not gonna risk becoming an additional person to be rescued when a lot already needs rescuing. She looked at him straight in the eyes when he looked at her. "I got it."

After that, the older student went on towards his mission of rescuing the others, leaving Miharu there watching his figure. In a way, she admires the courage that some people have, how they could quickly cast away the safety of their own well-being for the sake of. She, on the other hand, couldn't do it. Head turned towards the other boy [Daniel Tienzo] that had approached her. "Uhmm yes, just a bit." While the older boy did come off as a bit rude but he meant well. "And no, I am not helping. I might just add more to the victim count I did. I'm keeping an eye out around here."

What had previously been a picture of glowing serenity soon took on a panicked air as the black depths of the lake continued to claim students.

The capsized students from before came gasping to the surface, much to Harmony’s relief, but that relief was incredibly short-lived as the boat packed full of Puffs tipped and only one student – that quiet girl from the chaotic night in the common room – resurfaced.
There were flickers of aquatic movement beneath the surface of the lake, and as Harmony glanced around to get a better look, she caught sight of yet another upturned boat with miscellaneous playing cards floating around it. There were students diving into the lake and some foreign students, Daniel included, watching helplessly from the shoreline, but where were the teachers?

The writhing movement from beneath the surface caught Harmony’s gaze again, and this movement, along with the serious expressions on the faces of those on the shore, caused an indescribable sense of wrong to flood her mind. Maybe it was time to cut their excursion short and attempt to steadily head back to shore. Yes, Harmony wanted to release her lantern on the lake, but there would be no lantern and no more Harmony if their boat was the next to turn on its occupants.
“I think we should probably get back to land,” she warily suggested, eyes still tracking below the lake’s surface. All her thoughts of having a conversation had now been replaced by images of students struggling within the lake. “We can find a teacher or something”. She held her lantern tighter.

Oh boy it's not getting any better. as more boats flip and more people take the unwilling plunge into the chilling embrace of the lake. Flynn could only look on in shock as only a couple people resurfaced as the once calm and serene lake had turned into a rippled and foreboding body of water hell bent on swallowing everyone whole, Flynn felt helpless as he looked on waiting for something to happen and for everyone to come back, he wished he'd paid more attention in class so he would have a spell that could help but alas he had nothing so he can do nothing to help as they writhe just underneath the water.

Flynn catches a glance as a few boats rock as he sees some brave souls diving after their fellow students, Maybe Flynn should do that, but what awaits him under the water? would he be able to handle it with just his two hands? but he has to do something he can't just sit here idly.

"I think we should probably get back to land, We can find a teacher or something"

Harmony, yes she was still here, Flynn couldn't sit here and potentially have the lake take him or worse yet take Harmony under the lake, no he couldn't let that happen so his best bet at having her safe is to get them onto solid land.

"Yes I think that's a good idea lets get going" Flynn tried to suppress the panic in him as he places his quivering hands on the two oars as he used all his might to propel them to the shore as quick and safely as possible and once Harmony is on safe land they can find an adult who knows how to help.

Everything happened so fast, Maila barely had time to think. “Maila, do you remember before, when I said you have the spirit of a Horntail? Seems this is a great time to put it to good use! Let’s go!” Valentins words rang in her ears as he ran off to the shore and into the lake. Maila was a good swimmer, she really was. She knew she should help, she knew she could help. Her heart was blasting in her chest, bombarding the blood through her veins. It felt like it was going to jump out of her chest any minute. She took a deep breath, closing her eyes just for a split second. Then she felt herself starting to run. Her legs carried her fast until she was right where most people where jumping in to help. Kicking her shoes of in a fast manner, Maila tried to find a solution for her dress. It would be heavy and pull her down. Twisting her hair up into a bun, her eyes searched for Valentin in the water but she couldn't really see him. Hopefully he hadn't been caught as well.

When Maila's feet and legs finally touched the water, she could feel how cold it was but that did not stop her from going in and starting her swim. With strong pushes, she was at the scene fast and went through several possibilities in her mind. A couple students were up above the water with their heads, breathing heavily. To save her strength, Maila swam to one of the boats and hung onto it. Two girls were sitting in it, had they both been dragged down and escaped? How had they escaped? And what was dragging them down? How many people are still down there? What is dragging them down?” her words were coming out fast and her heart was still beating fast. She would wait for an answer for a couple seconds, before pushing herself from the boat and diving under water. Her eyes burned and she could barely see. Blinking, Maila could make out Valentin due to his hair color and then something she could not believe she was seeing Grindylows.

She came up for air, her mind racing with a thousand possibilities. There were several people down there, all getting dragged down, all running out of time. Several were already getting taken care of. When Maila was beneath water again she made out a boy. She had never met him before, never seen him, never talked to him but right now he needed help and she would try and help him. She knew she could not cast underwater, as she would not be able to speak but her wand was able to function under water. She closed her eyes for just a second, breathing in. Dear God, please please please don't let me miss my target and hurt someone else. Please please please. She swam as far as she could to position herself above the creature, doing the proper wand movements beneath water while clearly speaking „Jaculor!” As soon as she spoke her spell, hoping it would succeed, Maila dove under water and started swimming in the direction of the boy.

Astra blinked, shaking her head as if to bring herself back to the present. "No, no, you're right... I just... I just need a second," the first year said, breathing deeply. "I don't think... You should go back in though. Not in that dress. Makes swimming too hard and neither of us are very good anyway." The Norricks did swim, they all knew how, but that was more random vacation things. Astra was very out of practice.

Another deep breath. It was getting hard to keep her composure. I could have died. I could have died. There was no time to think about that, not now, not when other people were going through the same exact thing.

"We shouldn't jump in, I don't think. Don't want to become more of the problem." There were already older, more capable people in the water, more people coming to the rescue. And the last thing Astra wanted was to be back in the lake. "I think... we should probably get to shore. Right? Get out of the fray? Stay safe?" That's the smart thing to do, right? The safe thing? That'll help everyone, if we just stay out of the way. Right? Her thoughts whirled around in an anxious spiral.

A boy, a loud loud loud boy on the shore did not help this rising anxiety. She jerked away as she heard his crashing approach and shouts, and saw his flying leap into the water. Calm, Asa, calm.

The Norricks were hardy, the Norricks were tough. Their history was filled with people who took risks, who were unafraid of dangerous situations and exploring risky curiosities. For cripes sake, Hyperion was a senior Auror, she should've inherited the brave gene somehow.

Right?

Think through it. Analyze the fear and find a way around it. That's what you do. You're cunning, you're clever. Use those smarts of yours.

Closing her eyes again she counted to ten. Then twenty, just for good measure.

When she opened her eyes, there was a girl on the side of their boat. Astra jerked again, startled, but was able to calm herself simply by focusing on the girl's face as she asked a question: "How many people are still down there? What's pulling them under?"

Astra swallowed hard before saying, "I'm not sure how many... I think- I think it's at least five. The Grindylows are pulling them under. They... they might not be as lucky as me. To escape fast." She sent up a silent prayer as the girl sent a spell flying under the water and then dove.

Rhys’ track record with the great lake was shaky at best. In their first year they had gotten into a fight on its shore and then they had also had the misfortune to have gotten dragged away by nature during the Spring Court. Needless to say, events like these never seemed to go well, but this time around Rhys didn't really have a say in the matter of their attendance.

Rhys had decided to bypass the banquet in favour of the lanterns and boat rides, ignoring the dance floor and food as they walked to the lanterns table. It didn't take long for them to finish their design, they just painted the first thing that came to mind; something that wouldn't make Rhun go running to the nearest owl in order to write home to their dad.

The end result was the Read family crest. While Rhys didn't have some fancy ring like Lucian, nor the pure-blood status, they had become quite familiar with the traditions of their pureblooded wizarding family; they didn't stop with the crest either. On the opposite side of the lantern, they wrote the names of each family member, starting with their mothers and making sure to put extra care into her name, ensuring that it didn't smudge.

Amelie Read, Sebastian Read, Rhun Read, Rhain Read, Rhys Read, Rhylee Read.

Once they were finished, Rhys turned to find a boat to depart in. A flash of ginger and white hair caught their eye, and Rhys found themself smiling at the sight of Qrow in a nearby boat. They walked over, careful not to fall in their heels, coming to a stop before the Slytherin and offering them a small smile.

“Hey… Do you think you have room for one more?”
