Grabbing his ankles, a loud shriek would escape from the boy's lip in terror... She couldn't help but laugh at this point, it was perfect! It deserved at least 50 house points to Slytherin for that wonderful prank! Sure it was pretty messed up for her to scare her date but honestly, it was worth it, and plus Thymus usually took her unusual antics pretty well. Then out of nowhere, a boot would come down on Jannette's hands in retaliation, squishing her poor fingers.

"OWWWW!!!" Squirming, the brunette would throw her hands back, causing her to bang her head on the table. "OIIII!!! Really..." Rubbing the back of her head, she would poke her head out of the dark linen fabric, "Quecry y'know oi'm no' ac'ually -"1 She looks up at the pale boy in the suit, playing off the burn sensation in her hands with a giggle. Instead of it being her date, it was another pale boy in a black suit and he looked irritated. Great, not only did she just piss off a random student but there are three vampires in Hogwarts?! You gotta be kidding... "Oi'm so sorry! I t'ough' yuh were -"2 Her tone was apologetic, but before she could even finish her sentence, the boy would just curse her off, and walk away, swatting his hand like a fly was in his way, how rude!

After getting up from under the table in shame, Jannette brushes the skirt of her dress and takes a look around at the attendees. She noticed her housemates in an instant, Colin, Violet, Rebecca, Irina, and even a mysterious purple-haired boy (who she thinks she saw a couple of times in class, wasn't his hair green? Or was it blue before?). A smile appears on her face, the brunette would patiently wait for her date.

Some time would pass...

'He'll be here, he's just a little late, that's all.' She'd cross her arms, now tapping her foot.

And more time would pass...

'Maybe he just forgot something.'

And even more time passed...

'He's not showing up, is he...'

The brunette would frown, memories would fill the girl's mind. Emotions would sweep over her, the feeling of gloom would be the only thing she thinks about. Her eyes would begin to get red as tears start to roll down her cheek. This really was a series of unfortunate events: from getting scared to death during the Slytherin ritual, to getting tackled by Hunter, and now getting stood up during the Fall Ball. Of all the pranks, and antics this hurt Jannette the most -- sure it was probably funny, but for her, this was a new low. She didn't want to be here anymore, all the time, energy, and vulnerability of being here at the Fall Ball just felt like it just went down the drain. With her head down sobbing, the girl would leave the fall ball, heading to the Slytherin Common Room, now completely heartbroken.

The glow of the courtyard made it all feel more real. Taisia slowly stepped out of the castle and saw a small gathering of people around. She kept her distance, watching for Lazarus Lavey. Although she wasn't sure what she would say to him, she was waiting. The beautiful dress she was wearing had been designed by him. Navy, like the midnight sky, and sparkling, like the stars. All around she could see couples or friend groups meeting in their designated areas. Whoops. Maybe she should've checked where to meet Lazarus. Oh well, it would be more fun to search for him. There were fairies bobbing around the garden and Taisia stooped to pick one up. It fluttered away, giggling, before coming back to rest on her shoulder. More and more people were entering the courtyard, and soon it would be a lot harder to find Lazarus. Lazarus. Just the thought of him brought back the memory of their first meeting, when she accidentally told him he was cute and he asked her out. She transported herself to the courtyard again and focused on trying to spot Lazarus. So cursed herself for not thinking of a place to meet or a signal. Some of the older students were using sparks to find each other. She watched as yet another spout of green sparks spurted into the air and when she looked down, there he was!
"Lazarus! Lazarus!"
Smiling, he turned to look at her.
And by the glow of the glowbugs, Taisia's heart melted.
She made her way to him and he attached wings to the back of her dress. They fluttered and reflected in the moonlight. She took his hand and they set off.
"Are we going to dance first?"

What is Paradise, Valentin asked himself as he tied the final golden ribbon into a broom’s pale birch bristles. Not just any broom, of course, but a stolen Firebolt. Romeo’s Firebolt. Paradise is… a reward promised to virtuous souls to live out forever in a would-be afterlife, fine, but what would it even hold? What kind of existence would one want to live out for all eternity? Staring at his completed work, Valentin warmed with satisfaction. Not only had he looted it from his co-captain’s trunk without being apprehended too early, the broom-turned-hobby-horse shone bright with his decorations of silvery war armor. The boy was no true craftsman, but he was good with his hands, enough that the broom evoked the feeling of a white knight’s steed. At the head of the broom, a mounted plush horse head wore a metallic helm with a single long horn and neck armor. Over the saddle area draped one pragmatically-short banner, white with the red sigil of Durmstrang on either side of its soft cotton. As if the broom’s brush were indeed a horse’s tail, Valentin had tied eleven silver tassles and eight golden bows around its twigs. To a child, the broom would surely entice as a truly epic mount. To someone older… well. Valentin hoped it would bring some warmth to the Italian’s heart on this chilly autumn night.

Looking down off the top of the astronomy tower at the courtyard, Valentin thought of the time. He'd figured he might run late since he usually absorbed himself in his work to the point of losing track of whole hours, so he was already wearing his costume. Long fuzzy ears atop his head and a cotton tail laid the classic foundations of Valentin’s White Rabbit costume, paired with an elegant blue-black shortcoat in wool, a layered lace-collared undershirt, and white gloves and stockings. Pulling out a mechanical pocket watch, a key piece of his outfit, Valentin noted the time just as a bell from the clock tower chimed. The boy’s heart accelerated along with his body as Valentin tucked Romeo’s broom and special gift under one arm while pulling up his own broom. Sliding onto the lightning-scarred Silver Arrow, Valentin leapt from the top of the tower with a gleeful shout.

As he flew down, cold gusts pulled against the arcs of Valya’s rabbit ears and he bent forward against the headwind. Despite the biting air in his eyes, the seeker immediately spied the characteristic titian glow of Romeo’s hair. The glint of light metal winked back with a hint as to the boy’s costume, and with a blushing turn of his head, Valentin veered off to the side to hurtle towards one far corner. He wasn’t ready. The thrumming in his chest and the heat crossing his cheekbones gave their warning, and Val wasn’t about to rush in at lightspeed so soon after his earlier crash. Alighting gently on the ground near the punchbowl table, the white seeker dismounted with a bow to the nearby Queen of Hearts.

“Oh, my whiskers! I'm late, I'm late, I'm late!” giggled Valentin, cracking up at how strange it was to talk to Mikael in English. He’d mostly meant it as a gag, but then he wondered if Misha happened to know the word ‘whiskers’ in English and immediately returned to their more natural Russian. With a quick glance over the dark-haired boy’s outfit, Valentin smiled.

“Mishenka, let me fix that… your collar is on backwards. It’s no wonder you look uncomfortable.” Not waiting a second longer, Valentin’s hands slipped the lacy bundle off the boy’s neck and, righting it, secured it back in place. “There,” nodded Valya. “Where is everyone? Giving the hog warts a grace period before the Horde completely takes over?” Valentin hadn’t looked very hard on his flight in, what with his thoughts fully occupied, but he did want to at least greet the full complement of his friends.

“I was told not to trust the food here…” remarked Valentin, trying to be casual as he resisted the temptation to look over his shoulder. But what if he gets away?... No, no... The mission must wait, he insisted to himself. Calm down. It’s not like I’m even… Brushing off a stray fleck of dust from his sleeve, Valentin examined his outfit and began preening his hair as he elaborated. “Well, you remember. The one time I had a tea here, it was spiked and totally grew out my hair. Just be careful. There must be something amiss if even a hog wart is nervous about it.”

A barrage of thoughts streaming through his mind, Valentin clapped Mik’s shoulder and exhaled a weighty breath once more. “It’s good that you wore this. Makes the whole event more cheerful. I’m sure Fima will love to see it, too. I’m going to go deliver something, but if you need anything, just shout.” As Valentin tipped his head in farewell, his bunny ears jostled more from the wind than from his small gesture. The white seeker turned away then and walked towards a cluster of blooming blackthorn, his quidditch instincts knowing just where to go by automatically tracking his position relative to others through spatial awareness. It was a part of him that rarely shut off.

As a small pain dug into Valentin’s ribs from his arm holding the long bundle of objects against him, the boy felt a gusting breeze press against this broadside, subtle as it was. His thoughts fell silent as he listened to the sounds of rustling leaves and the light puffs of his footfall, eyes scanning the tops of the trees to pick out the individual pale petals against the backdrop of twilight and dark twisting branches holding them up. Even as the chatter of ball denizens continued, the winds came to a stop, and with them, so did Valentin. He lowered his gaze to alight on someone stooping slightly to touch the petals of a rosebush below. A gleaming aluminum-alloy gorget framed the boy’s face and auburn hair, and the smell of Italian leather wafted from his shoulder pauldron and rustic boots... Romeo. Valentin stood still, time frozen as he simply watched. There could have been nothing more important than the scene playing out in front of him.

* * *

Overtaken with a fascination that was part persuasion and part faith, Valentin stared on and on. Unbidden, the word “paradise” returned to him without explanation. Valya’s only movement was the slow wandering of his eyes as he absorbed every detail of this moment. Then, as the wind picked back up and nudged him out of the trance, the flow of time trickled back into the seeker’s senses. Valentin’s short coat was embroidered with class and cut a rakish figure, but it certainly didn’t hold back the cold as well as his usual Durmstrang garments. A lightweight, Valentin had been outside for a long time now, he realized. The seeker moved forward a step without meaning to, and once his foot touched the ground it was too late to hold himself back. His other foot swept forward and with three long strides, Valya dashed to his co-captain’s side. The slight bubble of heat around the tall beater warmed Valya on his arrival, and the seeker took a knavish bow. Raising his silver-amethyst eyes up to meet the other’s cerulean, Valya felt his chest beginning to fill with an indescribable glow.

“Sir knight, I have brought your steed,” came Valentin’s silvery tenor. Without a hello, without questions, and certainly without telling his co-captain that he was the most magnificent creature he’d ever laid eyes on, Valentin pulled out Romeo’s hobby-horse Firebolt and held it out in front of him. Yes, it had been stolen. Yes, it had been dramatically altered and now more resembled a child’s toy than a piece of critical quidditch equipment and the precious Durmstrang relic that it was. Yet, Valentin simply beamed as bright as the near-full moon above, emanating absolute adoration. His glittering eyes told Romeo that Valentin truly believed this would bring him some measure of happiness. Wedged under his arm, Valya’s own Silver Arrow had received no such attention, while the cloth-wrapped gift alongside it received no introduction… yet.

“You see, the old Firebolt insisted on going with you; probably still has a taste for adventure even after all these years, let alone missing the pleasure of your company." Valentin smiled, his Tatar eyes half-closing as he admitted the words to himself. He would have liked to have formally asked the other to the ball himself, but he no longer thought it gentlemanly. If he could at least impart some gifts, Valentin would try to sate himself on even those precious few moments... while truly, silently never wanting to leave him.

Aaron walked outside to the Courtyard where the Fall Ball was being held this year. The place had been adorned with all sorts of fairytale-themed decorations, but it was the rosebush that caught Aaron's attention. That's what correlated to the fairytale that he and Aly had chosen to wear matching costumes for. The Lily and the Lion, which was the Grimm's fairytale version of Beauty and the Beast.

Aly had found the story and told it to Aaron, and so he in turn told her about the Beauty and the Beast movie - it was one of his sister's favorites. In the end the decision was to go as Lily and the Lion, to match with the Grimm fairytale. And thus, Aaron had procured himself a lion's head - a fake one of course - but one that looked realistic and would serve him well this evening in being a conversation starter. Maybe it wasn't for everyone, but this particular Hufflepuff thought it was very cool. He'd mentioned to Aly that he had a lion-related surprise, but she hadn't seen the huge headpiece herself yet. Surely she would be able to pick him out of a crowd quickly because of it, though. So here he was, wearing a dark blue velvety suit that was hopefully prince-like, and a golden lion hat on his head.

He was wearing a couple of things on his jacket relevant to the fairytale too. There were several tiny gold-colored pins on his chest - a moon, stars, a little swirl to represent wind, and a dove. It was to show Aly that he had paid attention when she read the story to him (he definitely didn't have to go reread it himself later to make sure). Each of these four elements played important roles in leading Lily to the prince in the story, and he thought they were a nice touch that she would appreciate. But moreso than that, he held in his hands a black giftbox, wanting to give it to her as soon as they met. The giftbox was wrapped in gold ribbon - sure to match whatever dress she had chosen tonight - and it was small enough to fit in his palm. He was really looking forward to her reaction to this - it being his six-month anniversary present for her. They hadn't had a chance to properly celebrate the occasion, and had agreed the ball would be like a celebration in itself. Maybe every ball would be like another celebration for them, considering they had officially become boyfriend and girlfriend at the last one.

Aaron's brown eyes roved the area and caught sight of lots of familiar faces and fun costumes, but he did not see the curly hair that was his girlfriend's trademark. Perhaps she was running a bit late, or maybe he had shown up too early. Either way, his stomach rumbled and that meant it was time for a visit to the food. As he headed in that direction, the fourteen-year-old was pushed by someone faceless NPC and careened into a golden-dressed girl.

"Oh, I'm so sorry," Aaron said immediately, turning properly to the girl that he had bumped into. His free hand - the one not holding the gift - had instinctively reached out and gently grabbed the girl's arm, steadying her and keeping her from falling on what were likely heels. Recognition dawned easily enough - it was a familiar face, Logan Baird. She was a fellow Hufflepuff in his year, a duellist and a prefect. They did not interact very much, but they were friendly with one another as far as he knew. He even recognized the cat at her feet since they had met during the slumber party back in January.

"Hey, Logan," Aaron said, a crooked smile appearing on his lips as he greeted her warmly. He loosened the hand that had been used to steady her, but his finger caught on the bracelet that she was wearing. He looked down at it so he could disentangle, hardly noticing the golden stars. "Pretty bracelet," he said, his hand falling back to his own side now before raising his eyes again to hers. "Sorry again for bumping into you, seems like lots of people are in a rush. Are you headed to get food as well, or headed for the dance floor?" he asked, the charismatic teen striking up a conversation rather naturally.

I was reassured that I wasn't the only one who didn't totally stick to the theme. Indeed, I saw more princess dresses than Renaissance dresses. After I got tired of looking at the dresses of the people present, I concentrated on the decorations, each one more beautiful than the other.
What a wonderful start to the evening!
I smiled. Astoria had arrived. I turned around and made a more than exaggerated curtsy, more for the show than anything else.
Let's hope this night doesn't get out of hand...
I took my friend by the hand and led her towards the buffet. I grabbed two cups and filled them. I handed one to Astoria and drank the second one. Nothing strange. So there was nothing in this drink that I was allergic to. I relaxed slightly. Everything would technically be fine. Technically, there was no guarantee that the evening would go well. But I wanted to believe it would.
More and more people were arriving, some near the buffet, others waiting for people. I even saw a first year returning to the castle, crying. Maybe the evening wouldn't go so well for some people. But I wanted to have a good evening after all that had happened. So I'll ignore everything else. Auditory and visual dephasing, I think it's called.

Darling… this is amazing! What should we do first?
I don't know. What do you think we should do?
Eloïse watched Lloyd marvel at the yard's decorations. It was true that the girl was slightly impressed, but she had an old pureblood family who often had parties with other wizards. So she was familiar with grand and magical decorations. The boy moved forward a little to observe the whole courtyard and then returned, extending a hand gallantly to her.
Would you give me this dance, my darling?
Yes, sure.
Lloyd didn't seem to realise that Eloïse didn't really want to be there. She understood him, the excitement of the evening. But she'd almost been traumatised by her last time at Hogwarts, when almost nothing had happened before she and Astoria left. Eloïse knew that if wands were confiscated at the entrance to the ball, students would still manage to hurt each other more or less seriously. But she would make an effort. For Lloyd. She would still refuse to talk to Astoria because that was out of the question.
With a false smile -which looked very real- on her lips, Eloïse grabbed the boy's hand and let herself be led towards the dance floor. She would make an effort. A big effort, but she would make it. Because she knew she could do it. And she had to make the two hours she had spent preparing herself worth it.

Keith got it, though Colin was miffed at himself for growling. He was a friend after all! He did have to laugh, though, at how they ended talking about Keith smelling good.

"Sorry lad! I can't help it! It's the nose," he said with a smile. "I'd recognise you anywhere, even in the dark! At least you didn't dunk yourself in perfume or anything! That's the worst --- and it's actually getting pretty bad, even out here in the courtyard. So many really strong smells!"

Once Keith sat down next to him, Colin tapped his crown. The metal made a soft tink - tink sound. "Nice! I don't think I could wear a crown. I'm sure I'd look a right prat. Looks good on you, though!"

Colin was about to tease Keith for coming to the ball alone when he got a real shock: "Colin! You should ask Clair to dance with you sometime tonight! I'm sure she would say yes, I mean, I think you look amazing! She'd be crazy to say no."

"Wh---Me!? Keith! Don't talk so loudly! She'll hear you!" Colin's heart jumped and he blushed. He actually didn't mind what Keith said. It just surprised him. He turned to the boy next to him and nudged him in the ribs. He saw that Clair was pointing in his direction. "You're gonna get me in trouble, lad! I think she saw me! But --- yeah, you're right. I do want to ask her. Just --- just not yet. She's with Lily. Let them have fun for a bit first!"

"Also, I heard there is a petting zoo thing somewhere on the grounds, wanna check it out later?" Keith asked.

"Yeah! I'd like to go down there in a little while," Colin replied.

And then it happened. It seemed like everyone in Hogwarts that Colin knew decided to come over and crowd around him.

"H-hi, Colin! H-how h-have y-you been?" Taizu came over first to say hi.

"Taizu! I wasn't expecting to see you here! Well, I wasn't really expecting to see me here either." Colin smiled and returned the boy's greeting. He was actually surprised that Taizu even came to the ball, let alone come over and say hello to someone he didn't know! He actually felt proud of his friend.

Then a first year Slytherin, Violet, decided to come over. Colin groaned softly. His mild headache of earlier was now slightly throbbing with all the smells and sounds and sights that were bombarding him. Colin was resolved, however, not growl at anyone else tonight. He whispered to Keith as the girl approached: "I'll be alright, lad. I'm gonna use this as a test. Bonk me if I growl at her okay?"

"Hi Colin! What's up?" Violet said. She wore a black skirt covered with stars and moons and suns. She looked really cute, but Colin couldn't help but giggle.

"Hi Violet!" he said. "You look like the cutest fairy godmother ever! You're definitely on theme for the ball! This is Keith and Taizu, by the way," he said nodding towards the two other boys.

Colin looked up has he heard a gentle tinkling sound, as of a tiny silver bell singing amid the tumultuous hubbub of the gathering. Rebecca. He wore a really lovely shirt with wee tiny flowers and a tied ribbon around his neck. He was a lovely boy, and Colin was glad they'd met.

Evening, Gentlemen! And Lady! Looking quite sharp!

Colin smirked at Rebecca. "You should talk! You look quite the charmer tonight! Sorry I'm not half so charming tonight as I usually am. I think I'm going to turn into pumpkin or something in a few hours!"

Alright, lad! Colin said to himself. Ye're doing okay. Your friends are crowded around and ye haven't growled at any of them. Well, except poor Keith!

"I wonder," Colin began, but he stopped suddenly. He looked over towards the refreshment tables. He saw someone running towards the castle doorway. "Hey! Look over there! Isn't that Jannette running out? I wonder what happened. Hope she's okay."

Stephen did a quick brush through of his hair and surveyed the final result for the overall effect. Overall he was pleased, but had to admit to having some uncharacteristic jitters. Sure, he'd get nervous before any competition, but those kind of nerves he was used to, and he knew what to expect, generally, from himself. Nerves about a Ball though, well that was a whole new ballgame.

As he went to his bunk and gathered up his wand, his carefully folded handkerchief, and his flossing mints, he looked to his bedside table and pondered whether or not to bring the lavender rose with him up to the castle or not. He had hoped to see Kamila the night of the great welcome feast in the Great Hall a few nights ago, but she had not attended, at least while he was there that he was aware of anyway.

He was not pining, nor was he pouting or in any way feeling put out by not hearing back from her. What he was, primarily, was curious as to what had happened. He knew, like him, she had a competitor's spirit, so he fully expected to see her for the Hexwizard Tournament if nothing else, but he had not even seen her around camp. Had she even come? Was she well? Looking again at the rose, he smiled and decided to bring it with him. Better to be safe than sorry.

He walked at a decent clip up to the castle, careful to keep as much dust as possible off of his polished boots and princely white, well ecru really, trousers. A quick 'Scourgify' would take care of that upon his arrival so he was not being too precious about it. Even from the distance of his cabin he could hear the gentle refrains of period music floating across the lake, mixed with laughter, chatter, and even a few squeals. He laughed and hurried his steps, eager to get there.

Delighted no magic was necessary to neaten himself up upon his arrival, he entered the Courtyard. He had to give it to his Scottish hosts - they really knew how to host a Ball. It looked as close to what he imagined a fairy tale would look like. He held the lavender rose, which was in a clear, mini water container to keep it fresh, between his crisp, white gloves. He straightened his crown and tugged his pale blue, demi-tailed royal jacket, complete with a sash, gold brocade at the neckline and cuffs, and finished off with golden epaulets, exactly twice. Stepping forward, his piercing blue eyes scanned the masses of beautiful gowns and hairdos for one blonde in particular, but also for any friendly, familiar faces.

He would head over to the food table first, of course (he was a growing boy after all!) and hoped that maybe he might catch up to EmmaLee soon thereafter. He relaxed knowing he was destined to dance at least once during this ball. EmmaLee was growing into a good friend so there was a nice sense of comfort with her. They both might technically be 'single pringles', but there would at least be dancing in their futures!

It was time for another ball, oh and what a ball that was. Opeila loved the theme but for the young Slytherin it had come entirely too quickly, a full month of preparation had just been taken from her. Quite literally. The fourth year had only woken up from her coma on the previous day and still felt a little weakened. Her dress was rather modest, but she had managed to combine- and borrow- a bit of jewellery, so she could give it a bit of a fairytale connection. After all, she had always loved the story of the Goose Girl, so why not?

The unexpected reduction of time had also made it impossible for Opeila to make any plans regarding dates. Yes, for the first time she was showing up at a ball alone and it felt weird to be sure. So far she always had a friend or boyfriend who accompanied her, but this time she left the castle and stepped into the Courtyard without a classmate by her side.

That was alright though. Honestly, Opeila felt thrilled to even be there, out of the hospital wing, back among the living- and she was quite sure that she wouldn't be alone for long. Only few had seen that she was back.
For now she would stay in the background though and make her way over to the tables to help herself to something to eat and drink. She wasn't quite ready yet to get into any kind of disaster that might- alright, surely would- occur this night.

So she kept to herself, her glass of mysterious red beverage and her pie- that turned out to be apple- and was happy to watch the festivities unfold around her.
Part of her was a little nervous- she still felt a little weakened, but as a prefect, she surely was expected to step in if anything were to happen? Oh well, for now everything looked just fine.

Those who knew her might have stopped in their tracks to stare at such an oddity, because let the records show that Winnie Harper was not wearing pink.

Rather than the Ravenclaw's signature colour, the off shoulder gown sported a dazzling shade of metallic green, shimmering beneath the candle light and reminiscent of a jewel beetle's bright elytra. The boning on the corset of her gown had been crafted to look like large blades of grass, while her hair had been decorated with soft feathers. A tiny tiara sat on top of her head, the tips curved outward and detailed with tear drop pearls to give it a more whimsical touch. Hanging around her neck was her usual gold heart shaped locket. She hoped with the natural elements added to her costume it would be obvious to muggleborns and half bloods that she was dressed as Thumbelina.

As for her flower fairy prince... Well, Winnie was not certain where Mathias wanted to meet. In truth she had been a bit distant lately and had sent less letters than her usual overwhelming amount. She was still heavily suspicious of the boy after his odd behaviour during the end of the summer and his insistence that she drink strawberry juice. Despite this, feelings were complicated. She still loved Matt and debated his role in her memory loss since she had no solid proof. So, she had written him a letter to inform him of her choice of costume and made a suggestion for his own.

She wanted to keep an eye out for the Durmstrang Quidditch player that had tried to save her the misery of crashing onto the solid ground during the summer games. She had not had the opportunity to apologize for misunderstanding his actions and to offer her thanks.

In the meantime, she busied herself by checking out the ball's decorations. She halted at the Thumbelina statue, her head tilting in amusement. She had not matched it on purpose, but she felt a companionship of sorts with the inanimate object.
