APPEARANCE
Sebastian has curly brown hair and piercing blue eyes. He stands at roughly 4ft9, and while his weight is average he is slightly more toned than most kids his age due to a lot of time spent helping his mother in the garden. Likewise his skin is naturally sun-kissed and features its fair share of freckles.

He goes through phases of growing his hair out and cutting it back; he prefers the way it looks when it's longer, because the curls come out, but toiling in the garden can leave him longing to shave it shorter. When he's not wearing some sort of uniform, he likes to wear something lightweight, often linen shirts or tank tops, though like most kids he also loves his t-shirts and hoodies!
[»] he was decidedly more comfortable around earthen tones; rusts, browns, greens, ivory... these were what the Sorrel boy was most often found to be wearing.

In fact that very day he had on his favourite 'adventurers shirt', an off white linen shirt buttoned almost up to the top. His trousers were made from a cargo material, sage green. Boots to top it off. He was going for his best 'Indiana Jones meets Jurassic Park' look, and frankly he felt as though he'd managed to adequately pull it off.

Having grown up on his family's little homestead, Sebastian was quick to garner empathy for all living things. He'd happily help with their small menagerie of animals - a dairy cow, two goats, a sheep, and a herd of chickens to name only the farm animals - and quickly grew an affinity toward them. With time he also gained his mother's green thumb, helping her in the garden with far more interest than his other siblings seemed to have.

Being so far from any real city, at night the stars would shine so brightly they were impossible to ignore. He'd often sit with his father in the grass at night, or stand beside their gilded telescope, and marvel at what lay beyond their planet.

Sebastian is a homebody at heart, and never likes to be too far from his family. The Sorrel's are a very close-knit lot, and their shared work on the homestead has turned them into quite a productive team. Growing up without any immediate neighbours encouraged the Sorrel kids to find unique outlets for their energy and social needs when outside of school. While some took to learning sports, or forms of art, Sebastian always seemed to prefer writing. It was a hobby he could take anywhere, and even when chasing after chickens he could conjure up a story in his mind, ready to write down at a later time.

Unlike most kids of his generation, he's never really had any interest in technology. His phone is an old flip kind, used solely when he wanted to wander into neighbouring fields, and the only gaming console the family have is an old beat up GameCube complete with all the classic party games, such as his favourite 'Super Monkey Ball'. If it's used, it's used as a family! Each week the family would also have a film night, usually cast by projector onto the living room wall - though in summer they'd take a large sheet outside to set up an outdoor theatre. Sebastian finds himself drawn more toward the fantastical movies, though with 4 other siblings it's rare he gets to choose.

While he loves all of the homestead animals dearly, his favourite has to be his all black German Shepherd 'Beren'. Sebastian could spend hours sitting with the pup as he herded their small flock of sheep and happily galloped through the fields. Out of all the things he'd be leaving behind - parents not included - Beren is the one he's going to miss the most.

Sebastian Sorrel, First Year, Hufflepuff
BIOGRAPHY
Pre-Hogwarts

Sebastian was born and raised among the rolling hills of Shropshire, just outside of the town of Much Wenlock. He's the third of five kids, and only one of two to have displayed any magical proficiency so far. His older sister Alina (17) recently graduated from Hogwarts herself, while his older brother Tobin (15) attends an ordinary secondary school. His two younger sisters Rhiannon (6) and Olivia (6) have yet to show any signs of being magical themselves.

His father Beric (40) was a pureblood who fell in love with a muggle; Florence (39) caught his attention with her magnificent green thumb, and even without magic she was able to grow all manner of crops in the Shropshire countryside. Flowers bloomed eagerly and her fruits and vegetables were some of the best he'd ever tasted. They married in their early twenties, much to Beric's father's displeasure, though with time (and the arrival of Alina) both families were able to put aside their differences and truly unite.

The newly minted family would go on to inherit a decently sized patch of land, around 2 acres all told, which would become their homestead. A large garden patch was worked by every member of the family in some way or another, with Beric building new beds and Florence sowing her own 'magic' into the dirt. With each new child the garden grew, as did their menagerie of animals. From chickens to goats, to a whole dairy cow and some sheep, they sought to live as much as they could off the land.

By the time that Sebastian was born his oldest sibling Alina had already shown her innate magical nature, having set fire to her bedroom curtains in a characteristic fit of rage. Thankfully their father was there to soothe and educate her on what exactly she was experiencing, and with each new child that was born he'd take care to monitor and teach them about their magical heritage to avoid another such near-catastrophic incident.

Around the time that Alina received her acceptance letter to Hogwarts, Sebastian too began to show signs of magical affinity, which for a while served to drive a wedge between him and Tobin who had proven thus far to lack the same. His sister was sorted into Slytherin, and aspired to make their father as proud as could be.

They would later find out that Beric himself had been a Gryffindor. He proclaimed that no matter where they landed with the Sorting Ceremony he'd always be supportive and proud of them. This helped to ease any concerns Sebastian began to have when his own acceptance letter arrived... With a Gryffindor father, and a Slytherin sister there wasn't really any inherent House he longed to become a part of. Truth be told he was mostly nervous about leaving home at all.

But then the day came for them to travel to Diagon Alley, and while he'd been once or twice before when Alina was gathering supplies, it was a whole different experience traversing that magical street for himself...
First Instance of Magic

Sebastian brought home a tiny pea shoot from school when he was in Year 1, and was disheartened to discover it was the smallest out of all his classmates. He insisted on growing it himself, without his green-thumbed mother's help, but for days the seedling seemed intent on withering. Sebastian was so upset about this that he became both frustrated and inconsolable.

When his mother asked to see how it was doing he grew embarrassed and tried to hide it, though eventually he revealed it to her. Imagine his surprise when the plant had begun to truly thrive! Though the boy didn't know it at the time, he'd inadvertently altered it with magic. This strengthened his bond with his mother, and from then on he was always eager to help her in their garden.
The Hogwarts Express

Their trip down to London, and by extension Diagon Alley, had been a magnificent, frantic blur. A week, that's how much time Beren and Florence had set aside to see off their third born. The London Eye, a brief visit to the London Dungeon, and much more time inside the Alley, 7 days had gone by in the blink of an eye.

Now came time to say goodbye.

"I'm gonna wait by the exit" Alina announced, "Try not to get eaten, Sol." She'd been rather bored throughout the entire trip. How somewhere as awesome as Diagon Alley had become anything less than magical he'd never know. All that Sebastian could hope was that he'd never lose interest in it the way his eldest sibling had. She'd graduated, she was no longer a student... Ergo, it seemed, she was above it all.

Truth be told, Sebastian barely noticed her absence. He made his way through to Platform 9 and 3/4's the way he'd seen her do for the past 7 years, and though he knew it would work he couldn't help but scrunch his eyes closed as he ran forward.

What awaited him on the other side was beyond beautiful. A perfect red steam train... Most trains he'd been on (and there honestly hadn't been many) were fairly rundown and they ran on electric tracks. But this?

Whew.

Still as much as he wanted to marvel at it, he simply couldn't. Instead he turned back to his parents, and gave them a lopsided frown. "But, do I have to go?" Beric pursed his lips slightly, though it was ultimately his muggle wife who did the talking. "Of course you do, sweet pea... You'll never get another opportunity like this. Besides, you'll be back home in no time, I promise."

Beric nodded his head, then stepped forward to clasp his son's shoulder. "There's nothing to fear" he assured the boy. "Go on now, hurry along and find a good seat. And, Seb? Please do write..."

Even with such an exchange it took the boy much longer to actually part from his parents, the last possible moment in fact, and after frantic extra hugs and kisses he climbed up into the carriage with just one last pause to wave goodbye.

He only realized his folly when it came time to find a cabin. Each one that he passed either had the window shuttered over or happened to already be full. Gulping back his growing concerns, he continued to head deeper into the train, through various different carriages. until he finally came across a cabin with a few spare seats and a window that was actually open.

The problem? Well... The inhabitant didn't exactly look like a First Year. Sebastian felt himself paling, but worse than that he felt the train beginning to move. "Oh... Hogwash" he mumbled to himself, and then with a shake of his head he slid open the cabin door and stepped just one foot over the threshold.

"May I sit here?" he asked, gesturing to one of the empty seats. As much as he tried to avoid it, his voice wavered slightly. This was what he got for being one of the last to board, he supposed.

First Year Entrance

As they exited the Hogwarts Express, Sebastian found himself separated from his travel buddies; this fact might have alarmed him if not for the view which awaited them beyond. Awe wormed its way into every fiber of his being as he cast his gaze out across the abyss of lake and sky, only the stars serving to truly differentiate the two as darkness had fallen during their long journey from King's Cross Station.

His mouth lolled open slightly as he gawped up at the stars and tried to spot the constellations held within, those he and his Father had often taken to admiring throughout his life. They were just as bright now as they tended to be above his secluded homestead, with nary a thing to mute them save for the light of lanterns which proved meek in comparison.

It wasn't until the First Years were called for a second time that he was snapped from his haze, and in response he hurried away from the train and toward the two awaiting Professors (at least, he presumed them to be such given their ages, they didn't seem to match Alina so even Seventh Years didn't seem feasible.)

Introductions were given insofar as the Caretaker and the Professor were concerned, but though he did his best to listen to what came next much of it was overshadowed by his first real look into some of the upcoming curriculum he'd come to expect.

"Astronomy?" the boy whispered, to whoever was stood to his right. He didn't even turn his head enough to find out exactly who it was, for in that moment it didn't really matter who he said it to half as much as that he said it at all. Excitement bristled up within him, and the gawping turned into something of a brazen grin. It was softened only by the gnawing anticipation of what was to come, and the realization of how much time he'd be spending across this very lake.

So far from home... So far from his family.

Soon they were splitting off into different boats, and though he knew it probably made more sense for him to join the other students Sebastian couldn't help but be drawn toward that of the Professor. "Do we really get to learn about the stars?" he asked rather eagerly, as he slipped into one of the seats. "Oh, I can't wait!" Stars, plants, and animals... That was his trinity.

It left him wondering just what else lay within his future here at Hogwarts.

Excerpt from First Year Entrance 2022
The Sorting Ceremony

As he walked into the Great Hall alongside his fellow First Years, Sebastian's gaze was once again drawn upward. He was remarkably surprised to discover that much like on their boat journey over the Great Lake, what lay above was a starry night's sky. In fact, it seemed remarkably reflective of what lay outside that evening, mostly clear skies yet with a hint of a brewing storm.

He could not help but shudder at the sight of it. Awe-inspiring, yet so fantastical that it bordered on impossible; something his brain couldn't quite make sense of. They were most definitely inside, it was not quite so cold as the breezy Scottish Highlands after all, yet looking up one could easily forget as much. Floating candles only added to the unnatural majesty of it all.

So busy was he observing the non-sky that he barely even caught sight of the Headmaster himself as he passed the man by. Certainly he did not look long enough to notice anything beyond the most obvious of traits, namely his long grey hair and wizened eyes. In his amazement and hurry to press on, he could be forgiven for outright overlooking the faraway look in the old man's gaze.

As they were all finally corralled into the center of the hall, one long line of students that in many ways came to feel suffocating, Sebastian did his best to peer over and around the others to get a glimpse at the head table. Various Professors sat there, though he recognized only two from his journey over here. The Caretaker, and the Professor of Astronomy... Oh, Sebastian still couldn't believe that was on the curriculum!

Various moving paintings tried to snatch his attention away, not by calling out to him of course merely by their existence alone. His gaze drifted left then right, though the booming, amplified voice of the Headmaster did a good job of setting it straight soon enough. He'd investigate the portraits soon enough... He hoped.

For now there were more pressing matters at hand.

Countless names were called ahead of him, surnames A through G, H through O, and so forth... It seemed never ending, and he soon came to find himself moving his weight from one foot to the other. Truth be told it was almost enough for the magic of the ceremony to wear off. Almost, but not quite. Each time the Sorting Hat was placed on a head Sebastian rose up onto his toes to watch the process. Sometimes it was quick to shout out a House, other times it seemed to be reflecting, debating silently with itself. Or at least, quietly enough that they could not hear what it had to say.

Always, though, a House was chosen.

And then, seemingly both after eons and hardly any time at all having passed, one name most familiar was called forth. "Sebastian Sorrel!"

Nerves wormed their way through his gut, where they sprouted wings and began to flutter around freely. He grasped one hand in the other, and lightly pinched himself into motion. One foot in front of the other, rinse and repeat, until he'd made his way through the remaining crowd of unsorted First Years and up the dais to where stool and hat awaited him. Sebastian swallowed down a lump in his throat, and then carefully sat upon the stool, facing out toward the four long tables; in that moment, none of the faces stood out. It was like observing an empty ocean.

He felt the hat set atop his head, and slowly closed his eyes. Inhaled, exhaled... Then opened them again.

"Nervous, are we?" the hat seemed to purr, remarkably without any real bias behind its tone, "Mm, let's see... Curious and creative; might do well in Ravenclaw." Sebastian tried to keep his eyes set forward, though it was incredibly tempting to peer up at the brim of the hat as though he could somehow see into its magical brain. "But no, your fate is simple... HUFFLEPUFF!"

It took him a few long seconds to realize that his House had been chosen, and he blinked in response. The hat was removed, and he slowly rose up and began to pad down the steps toward the tables. His gaze spread across the four tables as he willed his mind to remind him which was the correct one. Which colours belonged to Hufflepuff? Red was Gryffindor, he remembered that much from his Father, and Green was Slytherin... He headed toward the table filled with yellow, and sought out a seat from among the other Badgers.

As one who didn't even really understand the differences between the Houses - after all, Beric Sorrel had always been very careful to avoid pushing them one way or another - he felt rather neutral in response to being Sorted. Excited for what lay ahead, apprehensive, and already longing for home, he could only hope that the Sorting Hat had chosen correctly.

Deep down, he knew it had to have.

Excerpt from Sorting Ceremony 2022
The Hufflepuff Table

His ears were still ringing with the words of the Sorting Hat. Few, concise, yet mighty impactful. As he approached the Hufflepuff Table he felt an immediate sense of warmth emanating from its inhabitants. They were a jovial bunch it seemed, happily chattering amongst themselves, many shuffling along the benches to make room for the newcomers, and feasting on the hearty dishes laid out before them.

Hufflepuff. Home of the Badgers... It did have a nice ring to it, didn't it? He wondered what his Father would think, heck what Alina would think... Then he shook his head and set aside such thoughts. He couldn't think about that tonight, couldn't give in to the homesickness invading his stomach, so instead he watched as a group of students parted ways for him to sit - which of course, he did. "Thanks" the boy said to the older student at his right, then he began to peer down the length of the table in order to pinpoint the other First Years. Some of their names he tried to recall from when they'd been sorted, but it was such a blur that it was honestly rather difficult to do. No matter, he was sure in time he'd come to know most if not all of them to some degree.

Behind him the Sorting Ceremony continued on, and every now and then he'd turn his head to watch. Truth be told it became rather painful to keep doing so after a while, so he focused instead on waving at those who were joining the Badgers as they approached the table as his own nerves began to wane and excitement brimmed to the surface instead. Soon enough he was even able to eat, and he was sure to have his fill without overindulging. Chicken and turkey, mashed potatoes, gravy and veggies... And when all of that was done with, there were sweets too. Pastries and puddings. It was enough to make his eyes widen with greed.

Of course, he only took one. Being raised among so many siblings it was hard to actually indulge in gluttonous behaviours, besides his Mother had taught him better than that. In the end he settled for a small single-portioned treacle tart. Delicious!

Choosing A Dormitory | Scamander Suite

It felt like an eternity since they'd first left King's Cross Station on the bright red Hogwarts Express. To young Sebastian Sorrel an entire month could have passed and he wouldn't have been able to tell the difference. Diagon Alley had been a blast this visit, he'd been fitted for robes, he'd picked out his school books, and he even had his own Remembrall now! Alina had never really let him play with hers, and since getting his hand on one he'd found it to be the perfect fidgeting device.

The Sorting Ceremony had been overwhelming to say the least, and in the aftermath of it all he felt particularly sluggish. As much as he was excited for what lay ahead, and all that he would come to learn, Sebastian was already feeling the deep pangs of homesickness setting in. He longed for their vegetable patch, or for Beren to come and demand fusses... Instead he was met with the stony interior of the castle.

At least there were plenty of other students around. As one of five children, he was more than used to busy, noisy surroundings. The idea of being away from home and among solitary silence was a frightening thought, but he didn't have to worry about that here. Plenty of his fellow Badgers - that's right, he'd been sorted into Hufflepuff! - were chattering amongst themselves, particularly the older students who seemed to be taking the time to catch up.

As they were led down into the basement and toward their Common Room, however, Sebastian found himself a little muted. There was plenty to take in, after all. Moving stairs and portraits, and the boy could have sworn he'd seen a ghost! All of these seemed like valid coverups for the truth: he was overwhelmed.

Thankfully the sight of the room itself served to immediately soften his tense shoulders, and he let out a sigh of relief. The interior reminded him of a Hobbit Hole straight out of Tolkien, with high-set rounded windows allowing glimmers of moonlight to pass through. Comfy chairs, a big warm fireplace, and plants, made up the majority of what awaited him. In many ways it was a firm reminder of his Shropshire home.

Then they were brought to the dormitories, after all it was very late by now, and though they could choose between two Sebastian was immediately drawn to one over the other. Scamander... Oh, he'd been enamoured with Newt Scamander for as long as he could remember! Dad always told him stories of his exploits, of the animals he adored... One day, the boy hoped, he'd also get to meet many of those creatures!

Stepping inside made him all the more sure of his decision. The scent was what he noticed first, and it reminded him of the fields of their homestead. Earthy... Wood lined walls and floor, and the bunks looked cozy and warm. Sebastian was quick to head toward one of the bunks with a blue faux-fur duvet, though he was beaten out for the top bunk by another student. He paused for a second and then pondered...

Finally he slipped into the bottom bunk, and seemed satisfied. It was almost like a den, in fact he was quick to let the curtains loose. A blanket fort of sorts... Perfection! He might have hibernated in there 'til the next morning if not for the fact he needed some pajamas. So he got up, found his trunk among the others, and set about unpacking the essentials. He didn't last long before the various leather boxes lining the walls drew his attention instead. Approaching a few of them, he peeked inside and found remnants of dirt and other debris inside. Some stank worse than the rest, and he wrinkled his nose in response.

Still, he couldn't help but wonder if maybe, just maybe, he'd be able to grow something in here! He'd have to ask someone... But who?

Thoughts were interrupted by the sound of skittering feet, coming from beneath his bed. Leaning down, he peered into the darkness and found a tiny set of eyes looking back at him. Sebastian jumped back in surprise, landing flat on his butt on the floor, and watched as a spherical ball of fluff skittered out of the shadows. A tiny yelp escaped him before he could hold it back, and when he realized what it was he was looking at colour flooded into his cheeks.

Great first day, Sorrel... Spooked by a Pygmy Puff!
