𝖁erney, Alaric Bertrand, of Verney Estate, Kensington, London, b. 21 February 1975; head of the family since the death of his father, Cassius Bertrand Verney. m. 12 September 2001, Cassandra Beaumont, b. 30 May 1977, dau. of the Rosiers of West Sussex. Issue: one daughter, Rosamund Aveline Verney, b. 16 November 2014, heir apparent under the Verney Settlement of 1678.

Arms
Per pale Argent and Sable, a tower counterchanged, its base entwined with a vine Vert, and charged in base with a rose Gules, seeded Or. Above the shield is placed an argent helm affronty, mantled Gules doubled Argent, surmounted by a wreath Argent and Gules, upon which is set a pair of wings Argent displayed and conjoined in base. Below the shield is a scroll bearing the motto FLORET OCCULTA.

Origin
Granted 1469 to Gervase Verney, the shield originally bore the field per pale sable and argent, sable to the dexter. In 1512, Isolde Verney, her father's heraldic heiress, secured by testamentary condition a personal license from the Council of Heraldry permitting her husband, Bertrand Aveline, to take the Verney name and assume the Verney arms outright rather than merely quartering them—the field's reversal to its present argent-dexter, sable-sinister configuration standing as the license's formal mark, denoting a continuation through the female line rather than ordinary descent. The license was granted personally to Bertrand and did not, at the time, establish a general family right. The tower, cord, and rose have remained unaltered since the original grant.

Succession
The 1512 license stood as an isolated precedent until 1678, when Theodora Pemberton Verney, facing an identical want of a surviving son, petitioned the Council to formalize it as a standing house right rather than a case requiring separate application each time it arose. The resulting Verney Settlement provides that a Verney daughter may, in the absence of a surviving son, matriculate the arms as heir apparent in her own right, undifferenced. The Settlement has been invoked on five occasions to date, at markedly increasing frequency—Theodora Pemberton Verney (1678), Seraphina Adelaide Verney (1746), Honoria Cordelia Verney (1889), Wilhelmina Aurelia Verney (1921), and Emmeline Thomasin Verney (1957). Emmeline's son, Cassius Bertrand Verney, and grandson, Alaric Bertrand Verney, both succeeded by ordinary male inheritance, the family's only extended run of unbroken male succession since the Settlement's founding; the Settlement now stands pending a sixth invocation, in the person of Rosamund Aveline Verney.

Lineal Descent
Direct descent from the 1469 grant, uninterrupted across five and a half centuries save for the 1512 Aveline settlement and the five female successions the 1678 Settlement has permitted.

Seat
Verney Estate, Kensington, London, held by the family without interruption since the sixteenth century, the present structure substantially the product of later renovation upon the original foundations.

Collateral Branches
None surviving; several cadet lines extinguished by the twenty-first century. The last, a distant branch, Peregrine Thackeray Verney (b. c. 1911 — d. 1987), dying out without male or female issue. The direct line has since stood alone, a circumstance without real precedent in the family's recorded history.

GERVASE VERNEY (fl. 1469), first of the line to hold formal grant of arms;
ISOLDE VERNEY (fl. 1512), sole heraldic heiress of her generation; secured by testamentary condition the 1512 license permitting her husband to assume the Verney name and arms, the precedent on which the Settlement itself was later founded.
THEODORA PEMBERTON VERNEY (fl. 1678), who succeeded under the same want of an heir that would recur through the line; founder of the Settlement and the formal architect of the standards of conduct and discretion for which the House has since been known;
SERAPHINA ADELAIDE VERNEY (fl. 1746), who succeeded under the Settlement after the deaths of both her brothers from a duel and a dragonpox;
HONORIA CORDELIA VERNEY (fl. 1889), whose brother's disinheritance over an unsanctioned marriage led her case to expand the Settlement's scope to cover disinheritance as well as death;
BARNABY THACKERAY VERNEY (fl. 1789), credited with establishing the family's enduring interest in the acquisition and appraisal of rare and antique objects, a pursuit continued by his descendants to the present day.
PEREGRINE THACKERAY VERNEY (1911-1987), of the now-extinguished cadet line descended from a younger son of Barnaby Thackeray Verney; proprietor of a well-regarded antiquities and curiosities dealership, continuing his ancestor's interests into the twentieth century. His death marked the extinction of the family's last surviving cadet branch;
WILHELMINA AURELIA VERNEY (fl. 1921), who succeeded under the Settlement following her only brother's death in the First Muggle World War;
EMMELINE THOMASIN VERNEY (fl. 1957), who succeeded under the Settlement following her only brother's death in 1955 from injuries sustained handling a cursed object newly acquired for the family collection; mother of Cassius Bertrand Verney and grandmother of current Head of the Family, Alaric Bertrand Verney.

Clause 1 · Testator, Declaration and Revocation

I, Cassius Bertrand Verney, born on 8 January 1943, a resident of Verney Estate, Kensington, London, of sound mind, declare this to be my last and will and testament, made by me on 10 January 2015, revoking all prior wills and codicils.

Clause 2 · Appointment of Executors

I appoint Alaric Bertrand Verney, my son, as the sole executor and trustee of my will, trusting him to discharge its provisions with the discretion the family name requires.
Should Alaric Bertrand Verney be unable to or unwilling to act, or should he predecease me, I appoint Cassandra Beaumont Verney nee Rosier, my daughter-in-law, to serve in his stead, with the same powers and the same discretion herein granted.

Clause 3 · Gifts

To my son, Alaric Bertrand Verney, I leave the following:
—Verney Estate, Kensington, London, together with its grounds, contents, and appurtenances, to hold in trust for the Verney line in perpetuity, per the terms of the Verney Settlement, as has been observed by this family since the year 1678;
—Thorncliffe Manor, Chinchester, West Sussex, acquired by this family in the time of my grandfather and kept since as a place of quiet retreat from London affairs;
—Maryleborne Manor and Chelsea Manor, held these many years without let or occupation, their value resting in the land itself rather than any present use;
—Bloomsbury Townhouse and Pimlico Townhouse, both presently let, the rents from which are to continue to the Estate's account;
—Herefordshire Holding and Oakhurst Holding, which by the terms of their original grants may not be sold, divided, or alienated from the Verney line under any circumstance;
—Key to Vault 1123 at Gringotts, together with its contents, to be held as is proper for the head of this House;
—Whole of Acquisitions Catalogue begun by my ancestor, Barnaby Thackeray Verney, together with the standing arrangements maintained for its appraisal and expansion, on the condition that no item be sold, divided, or otherwise disposed of without consultation of the catalogue's private annotations, which I leave likewise in his keeping; and,
—Chess Set, ivory-and-jet, kept in the east drawing room, being of no great monetary value, but of long use between us.

To my granddaughter, Rosamund Aveline Verney, I leave the following:
—The sum of 1,500 Galleons, to be held in trust by the executor until she comes of age, or until her marriage or the completion of her schooling, whichever the executor deems most fitting;
—Astrolabe, brass and silver, presently held among the acquisitions of this House, of Continental make and uncertain origin prior to its purchase by my ancestor Barnaby Thackeray Verney, which I judge fitting for a Verney to keep close rather than to sell;
—I set down further that, in keeping with the House's own precedent, no distinction is to be drawn against her on account of her sex in any matter of inheritance, standing, or succession, should the need for such a provision ever arise.

To Tibby and the other elves in service to this House, continued place and provision for so long as the Estate stands, in recognition of service rendered without complaint.

Clause 4 · Outstanding Obligations

I direct that all just debts be settled from the Estate prior to any further distribution, including but not limited to an outstanding obligation to Mr. Augustus Crane, the particulars and terms of which are recorded separately and are not to be disclosed beyond the executor's own knowledge. I further direct that the arrangements concerning this obligation be continued under the same terms and the same discretion until such time as they may be honourably concluded.

Clause 5 · Residue

All the rest and residue of my estate, of whatsoever kind and wheresoever situated, not hereinbefore specifically bequeathed, I leave to my son, Alaric Bertrand Verney absolutely.

Clause 6 · Closing

I have endeavoured, in all things, to leave this House no weaker than I found it. What remains unfinished, I leave to my son—and now to his daughter also—to finish as they see fit.
