Simon could hear Vale’s commentary pretty clearly now on the ground and it made him smile. For someone that was giving a lot of nothing, that nothingness sure seemed to be a focal point for her.

When she moved on with what was happening elsewhere in the race he was impressed she remembered an actual race was happening.

The race was still going, even if not in favor of the badgers but they weren’t ones to give up.

At the warning from Dee, Pear glanced back, sporting a frown for the growing distance between them. The sentiment in him had hoped to recreate the tie from their first race, to finish side-by-side with his long-term teammate. Yet as her spell hurtled towards him, so too did half the Hufflepuffs, closing in on himself and Korinna. Reluctantly, Pericles abandoned the notion in favor of securing the win. Dee's "blessing" wasn't pleasant: he felt the muscles in his legs constrict, locking tight together with a prickling sensation. They were no strangers to discomfort. The curse all but guaranteed their success, and Pear grimaced miserably through it, raising his hand with a forlorn wave. At least he wasn't alone in his pain nor the lead. Cupping his mouth, he shouted encouraging words to Korinna over the howling wind: "This is it! Stop for nothing!"

AngelFyre continued flying, half expecting something further to happen from Bea’s mystery cast a few units back, but it never came. She had exactly zero time to take any comfort in that fact when the busy Bea took successful aim at her once again, disarming her for the second time this match. As if that were not bad enough, she grabbed Ellie’s wand too. Busy AND effective was not a great combination in an opponent.

Well, double dang!

The only thing that took the Bea sting out of the moment was the commentary by Vale. AngelFyre always could, and did, laugh off criticisms and jokes at her expense, but she felt her blood uncharacteristically boil at the snark tossed Simon’s way. Bea may have thought she found the chink in AngelFyre’s armor, but she was wrong.

Vale had.

She knew her fellow, whatever was going on with him race-wise, would not be bothered by the commentary, so it was silly for her to give it even a moment’s thought. He would place his focus where he needed to and so should she.

Grudgingly, she did.

She had some decisions to make and she now had to make them quickly as the eagles were stretching their lead. She looked over her shoulder, considering whether to go back for Godshall. In doing so, she saw Zephyr closing in on her position.

She caught his attention and signaled that he should prepare to oop her farther along the track than she could go herself. Godshall was a sad casualty of war now. Retrieval would have to wait.

She and Zeph got in position, and she felt his powerful spins lift her braid off her back as the wind whipped in her ears. When he released her, she shot off like a speeding bullet, yelling “Thaaaaannnnkkkkkkkk yooooouuuuuuu!” back at him, as she began making up some necessary distance.

She weaved and dodged through passageways, thorns, heat, and trees, receiving only a minor case of race rash which began to burn and seep immediately beneath her uniform. Such little damage was a real accomplishment in her mind. She was not flying a perfect race, but a pretty clean one. She did take a degree of pride in that. It was important to look for the good things that happened in every race, especially when it felt like so much was going wrong. She, happily, even caught a glimpse of Simon as she flew over his unit, sending him a silent message.

’Do not be discouraged, love. We knew our chances of winning this match were low at the outset. I have managed to lose Godshall twice. In fact, he is not even with me this moment. We will get them next year, Mav. See you at the FINISH line.’

She waved and then leaned over her broom, cutting air resistance as much as possible as she continued onward, looking with determination at the back of the two eagles in front of her.

----------

When the Hogwarts professor showed up at AngelFyre’s door with the letter on the occasion of her 11th birthday, she could say in all honesty that as a Muggle, she knew nothing of magic. Literally nothing, except what she had read in Muggle literature or seen in Muggle cinema, and those both offer poor comparisons to the real thing. It would be fair to say that based on the reactions of her family to the news of her acceptance to Hogwarts, they were as unaware of magic in their lives as she was. So many students here grew up with magic in some fashion and they take for granted that magic is part of who they are. AngelFyre has felt, justifiably so, behind the curve in simply fitting in here, let alone understanding much of what is spoken of or goes on around these hallowed halls. There is still not a day that goes by in which she does not question whether this is just a vivid dream she has fashioned and one from which she will soon awaken, back home in her own room.

Because of these feelings and her newfound magical abilities, she and her family have wanted to know who they are, really are, and where her magic comes from. To that end, her mother and maternal grandmother have been doing a full court genealogical press on their family tree. They wanted to know if there were other instances of magic in their background, and they appear to have found some answers.

On her father’s side, it has been discovered that in 1658, John Iain McCubbin, along with his wife, Maeve Lyall McCubbin, emigrated from Scotland to the shores of the colonies in the new world, later to become the United States. They eventually made their home in Salem, Massachusetts sometime around 1673. It appears that for many years, they lived without incident, raising a family of two daughters and one son on their meager homestead.

A year or so before the Salem Witch Trials raged through the population in 1692, the McCubbins had packed up all of their belongings and had already started over again in Maryland. This timing is important because journal entries made by Maeve have been found in a family history museum in Australia. In the 2-3 years leading up to the witch hunts, there were passages in which she recounted conversations with her husband. She often implored him to have them sell what they could and move on as she had been “struck with visions” of friends and neighbors, accused of practicing witchcraft, hanged or drowned for their sins of witchcraft. Maeve’s visions had been taken seriously in her family for years, and noted by her neighbors, as they often had been able to avoid starvation on their cabbage farm as she would often “forecast” a plague or early frost while her neighbors were not so fortunate.

On her maternal side, going back six generations, her great(x4)grandmother, Essie Wilhelms Godshall (née Gantry), had some minor notoriety as a healer in and around the breadbasket area of the Midwest. She married Crawford Ingram Godshall, an infamous, but affable, gambler she met on a river boat trip on the Mississippi river. Crawford was lucky... very lucky. He was often accused of cheating, but no one could ever catch him doing so. Many times he escaped what would surely have been certain death at the hands of infuriated fellow gamblers, but he always managed to just dodge or duck flying bullets and knives. AngelFyre’s Grandma Ruth Godshall has recognized what she thought was just a decorative item but which she now believes to be an actual magical wand that belonged to Crawford Ingram Godshall. It has been passed down through the years to the men of the family. She has it now because it belonged to her husband, Ezra Simpson Godshall.

What has not yet been revealed in the genealogical study is why the magic on both sides was quieted or disappeared. Maybe there will be answers to that and maybe there will not be, but it seems clear that the magic has reappeared with AngelFyre. Things that no one in the family thought much of prior to AngelFyre’s 11th birthday have now taken on a new color. Her ability to “see” is infrequent and subtle. As a young child, her mother recounts seeing AngelFyre walking by their barn with her best friend Ainsley. Ainsley was walking closest to the barn, and for no rhyme or reason, AngelFyre took her best friend’s arm and casually directed her to AngelFyre’s other side, while continuing to walk. Just a few seconds later, their horse, Goliath, kicked out that portion of the barn where Ainsley would have been standing and likely would have been severely injured. When asked about it, AngelFyre just shrugged her shoulders and said she “Did not want Ainsley to get hurt,” but could not elaborate further on how she knew Ainsley would have been hurt but for her moving her out of the way.

The Seer’s ability is a tricky one to pinpoint because so many people have gut feelings or intuition about things. One thing AngelFyre has long been aware of is how she does seem to have a strong sense sometimes about little things like what material will be on a quiz or exam, or knowing when someone will knock on their door when they are not expecting anyone, or even gathering candles for unexpected power outages. These things do not happen often, and it never would have occurred to her that it comes from a place of magic, but it now seems likely to her that it does.

A Seer is completely human, so there is nothing to change right now as a first year in terms of AngelFyre’s physical appearance. The only physical manifestations that a Seer undergoes is that the eyes will cloud over, completely white, when visions occur, rendering the Seer temporarily immobile. This may begin some time around her third year at Hogwarts. Also, a Seer’s hair pre-maturely turns gray or white, usually in later teenage years. Because she is still so young, AngelFyre’s hair has not yet started to turn white or gray. That will likely begin to manifest in her 6th or 7th year.

Year 2 – FEARLESS
EFFECTS: Fearless -- Dhampir's Aura, the ability Terrible Presence, a Lycanothrope's Intimidation OR certain charms, potions and jinxes that would normally cause a fear effect do not work on you as you are immune to them.

In Dueling
• In a duel with a Year 3+ Dhampir (with activated aura), or a player with Terrible Presence, a Fearless player won't suffer from their debuffs (10% auto-fail, 10% auto-miss, +1 Critical Failure range, –10% spell damage).

----------

AngelFyre, if asked, would be hard-pressed to tell anyone what scared her because she just did not scare easily. Like anyone with a heart and the capacity to love, what most scared her was not fear for her own physical safety, but rather, fear of the loss of loved ones, whether that be her boyfriend, family, friends, or her animal pals. Raised in a muggle home that appreciated muggle horror movies, she surprised her parents at a very young age when they caught her up long past her bedtime watching ‘The Creature from the Black Lagoon’ alone, in the dark, and laughing. The idea that such silly things as monsters existing amused her 6 year old self. As she grew older and the scales began to fall from her eyes, she could look at the world and find that, indeed, monsters did exist; they just looked a lot more like her than Frankenstein’s monster or the Mummy.

Well, that was what she believed anyway, at least until she found her way to Hogwarts. Even still, she found that the half breeds who roamed these hallowed halls alongside her were not something to automatically run from, screaming like a whipped puppy and hiding and trembling in some dark corner, hoping to not be discovered. Was she glad to know they existed? Yes. Information is always power. Better to know than walk amongst them and be completely unprepared on the off chance… the very off chance… that something bad might happen. But truth be told, most of the nastiness and vile behaviors she witnessed this past year came from the human race, provoking the others, whether that be physically or in written articles to rile up a student population quite needlessly.

Part of being fearless had less to do with bravery, so to speak, and much more to do with preparedness and confidence in herself and in the guardrails that were naturally imposed on society in any number of ways to minimize the idea of risk. Everything was all a numbers game, figured out in some actuarial table somewhere by some bean counter. Was there risk in everything? Of course! One could conceivably drown drinking a glass of pumpkin juice, but that did not mean she would allow herself to be afraid to drink it. AngelFyre was not at all interested in the ‘What If” game. Everyday was filled with risk, but one had to turn over a certain amount of faith in other people to do their jobs, and to do them competently, to keep her, as well as themselves, safe. Because it was a numbers game, the odds generally heavily favored her. She can, and will choose to sky dive when she turns 16 because, while the jump might be intimidating and just a little nerve racking at first, it will also be a huge thrill. At heart, AngelFyre is an adventurer. It seems unlikely that one could be both and adventurer and scared of one’s own shadow. She has never been scared of shadows.

She was not, and is not, a reckless girl, usually. Everyone has their stupid moments. She was no exception. She knew risk was something to deal with and manage. And that was the crux of how she approached the idea of fear in everything she did. She simply tried to prepare herself to the best of her ability as her first line of defense. AngelFyre wants to experience life; not sit back and simply read about it or watch others living it. She wants to suck the marrow out of every moment allotted to her in the blink of an eye that she will reside on terra firma. That means getting out and meeting the world head on, come what may. In the past when the world bit back upon such head on meetings, it was wisely chalked up to a lesson learned, and one hopefully not to be repeated. In the future it will be much the same. She has seen no reason to change her way of thinking or feeling about it now.

Fear?

She will continue to meet it head on and likely come out on the other side breathing, and most probably even laughing.

Year 3 – SEER 2 (Prophecy)
EFFECTS: Prophecy -- In moderated situations, the moderator has a 50% chance of offering you some tidbit of information or some sort of vision that is semi-relevant to the situation. It might be very important or it could be something very useless (think That's So Raven). Can only use this skill once per thread.

Year 4 – BINDING MARK
EFFECTS: Binding Mark -- They can communicate telepathically with those who are branded. (This can be blocked as an Occlumens. An Occlumens can choose to not hear the communication.)

- Those branded will know the location of the wizard that branded them at all times. (This can be blocked as an Occlumens. An Occlumens can elect to have their location not detected and they would know when someone has attempted to locate them.)

- The wizard that branded their followers with this mark will always know where their followers are at a given time. (This can be blocked as an Occlumens. An Occlumens can elect to have their location not detected and they would know when someone has attempted to locate them.)

- Those branded will not know the location of the others that were branded but can recognize the brand on others if they see it as the brand is unique. This is achieved because they know what the image looks like and they can communicate with and have been in communication with the others that are marked. While a metamorphmagi can make a passable image of the mark if they are aware of the mark, the mark would not be functional.)

Binding Marks cannot be given by any form of NPC.

----------

The “gift” of being a Seer had more than its fair share of challenges. The primary challenge that AngelFyre faced with it was her frustration over the inability to turn it on or off when she, or someone she loved, could most benefit by knowing some details about future events. She would never think to use it for anything so trite and self-serving as finding out what the questions would be on exams, or what the numbers might be in the next billion dollar Lotto, but she did find that the things that she foresaw were often of a trivial nature.

Just a few weeks earlier, she had a vision of herself standing in front of a mirror in the Prefects’ Bathroom, squeezing a bead of toothpaste onto her toothbrush. All of a sudden the tube suffered some sort of rupture, and gobs of toothpaste burst forth from its side and all over her hand. A few weeks later, that very thing actually happened. She laughed as her hand, no matter how often she washed it, had a refreshingly minty scent for most of the morning. Still, there had not been enough details in the vision to help her avoid it. She was in the Prefects’ bathroom. Check. She was in her standard, school robe (which covered up her street clothes). Check. She was wearing her hair down, as she did 90% of the time. Check. The hard fact of the matter was that sometimes she could know something, but still be in the dark about it. That trivial little incident was just such a moment.

Somewhere towards the middle of the second term of her third year, AngelFyre had come to fully accept that she was a Seer. There had been small hints and flashes of it throughout her life, but it was not until she had taken her Divination class that what she was finally solidified itself within her psyche. She and Simon had both suspected as much in her first year, had gotten some circumstantial confirmation of it in her second year, and then there was just no denying it in the third year. The comfort she took in it was twofold: she knew now why she had the flashes and visions she did (it once crossed her mind to worry that maybe she had a brain tumor!), and it gave some credence to her first real visions as a Seer. In those she had foreseen danger to Simon coming at him from his vampiric “father”, Adrian Hawthorne. Those visions had hung over her like a dark cloud since knowing Simon and loving him, and there was no denying that supporting him in his pursuit to know more about his father brought about great strain and worry for her.

The two rarely argued, about anything, but the topic of daddy Hawthorne was the one, glaring exception. Realizing that his need to know his father was not entirely unreasonable, AngelFyre had had to learn to live with the fear and uncertainty of the situation, and was left with no choice but to trust Simon when he told her he would be more on guard around his father, knowing what he now knew about him precisely because of her visions. Small comfort, that, but she would take everything she could get. Part of that “everything she could get” was made harder on her by the fact that, like Hogwarts, Simon was always in a communications desert when at Hawthorne Manor, technologically speaking. It was weak, but the uneasy peace treaty she had brokered between her fear and her trust in him to be on guard had been enough to keep her sane during his more frequently radio silent and extended visits with his father and his father’s coven.

Until.

Until the winter break incident shattered her peace treaty in no time flat.

A shot had been fired over the bow, and that was bad. Very bad. Worse was not knowing where it had come from or what had actually happened to Simon since he could not remember himself. He had been calendared to spend the two weeks with his father, but that was cut short and he was ultimately admitted to St. Mungos. All it took was one message from his Aunt Maggie in the wee hours of New Year’s Day, and AngelFyre and her folks were off to London. Simon was ultimately fine, of course, suffering only a couple of broken ribs, but when he awoke shortly after her arrival, her fear dwarfed her senses. He shared he had no memory of what had actually happened to him, insofar as the cause of his injury, and he had hidden from his father how badly he was hurt. He had simply requested that his father accompany him back home to London and to Aunt Maggie. Adrian obliged and then left almost immediately upon delivering his son back back to his Aunt, after which, Simon asked his aunt to get him to St. Mungos.

Simon had determined quite some time ago that his father was not to learn that his son was of magic, and there was good precedent for keeping that a secret; primarily, AngelFyre’s visions. This incident only proved that no matter how careful he might be, things could go awry, and that was just unacceptable. So in order to feel less powerless in the situation, AngelFyre did what she always did when it came to her fellow… she got to work.

Their inability to communicate in a timely fashion was the main obstacle here, from her point of view, so hours and hours were spent in the Library poring over every tome and scroll she could lay hands on concerning magic communication. Of all the things magic could do, surely there had to be something more efficient than owls to communicate with one another. Owls were okay, but slower than she would like in this modern day and age, especially in an emergency.

It took next to no time to land on the subject of Legilimency, but after devoting probably too much time to learning about it, AngelFyre determined it would not really meet the requirements for communicating with Simon she was looking for while he was away from her. More than that though, it seemed too much like a violation of his privacy. Simon would have little to no say over her whims to actually traipse through his layered thoughts, unless he decided to become an Occlumens. Fascinating as it all was, it only took her down a rabbit hole that was simply not a helpful solution to her dilemma.

Other research she saw in passing mentioned Witches Marks, sometimes called Devil’s marks, but nothing much was found regarding them other than they were often used as excuses for identifying a person as a witch during the mid 17th century in Europe and the Americas. A witch’s mark did not seem proof of any significant value to her problem until she discovered over spring break, quite by accident, that one of Simon’s Scottish ancestors was an infamous “Witch Pricker”. In a little museum in Kirkintilloch, Scotland, they both learned that a witch’s mark was believed to identify someone as a witch as the mark gave no sensation of pain when pricked. Because it was such a macabre, fascinating part of her boyfriend’s history, AngelFyre redirected a little more of her attention to learning about “marks” in general when she needed a break from her studies or from her obsession to find an answer to their ‘failure to communicate’ problem.

It was during one of those “breaks” that she came upon her answer near the beginning of her fourth year... the Binding Mark. This particular mark would allow immediate, two-way communication between her and Simon, and best of all, it would be telepathic communication. His father would never know about it at all. The bonus she had not even been looking for, but would get with it anyway, was that it allowed the both of them to track each other. Neither of them would ever again be in the dark as to exactly where the other one was, and that was just miraculous to AngelFyre.

She tackled the rigors of learning the magic for creating the mark with her normal badger ferocity and then some. Every spare second, outside of class and Prefect duties, was spent on reciting it and nailing down the intricate wand movements. In addition to perfecting the magic itself, there were other considerations as to what the mark itself would look like, where it should be showcased on his body, and what their activation word should be. It had the possibility for being a highly intrusive bit of magic, but more than that, it would irrevocably bind them together for the whole of their lives, or at least until one of them was no longer living.

AngelFyre knew she was sure of their longevity as a couple, but she had the benefit of having “seen” as much for herself. Simon would only have her word for such, and he may be a little less anxious to give anyone… even her… the ability to insert their voice in his head whenever they chose to do so for the next month let alone the next 70 years or more. She recognized it would be a huge leap of faith on his part to accept her mark, so the more she understood about the Binding Mark itself, and the better prepared she was to answer his questions, the more likely he was to go along with it. And she needed him to go along with it. (Word Count: 1,609/400)

have a +1 chance of critically succeeding
.

You just know better than to cast a spell that is about to backfire. You might almost cast something and then think twice about it and choose a different spell (this is for flavor, this does not mean you tell us two spells and get to choose the effect of the better one). You may never know it but you just saved yourself a backfire.
Simon and AngelFyre have longstanding permission to godmod one another's characters.

Gahhh! Matilde could not see a single thing. She flailed around wildly, cursing the bowtruckles. It was all she could do to stay on her broom and keep flying in the right direction. She couldn't see where she was, or where anyone else on her team was for that matter. Were they winning? Losing? She was so far in the back of the pack she didn't know if she could have been able to tell even if she could see a thing. She was pretty sure she could hear Vale laughing at her pain, and Matilde tried her best not to let it bother her. Broom racing always was an exercise not only physical, but also in good mental control.

Have you ever?

Have you ever tried to give it your all? Through the thick and thin? Through the tears from rain and wind and pain? Through the thorns and the calls?

Ruth wasn’t too sure how to answer that herself. But she knew something. That no matter the outcome, there was a state of bliss in the experience.

Surrounded by her allies and temporary opponents, the Hufflepuff felt cognizant of the thrum in her heart. The thump, thump, thump, urging her on, sweaty palms and bleeding cheeks. Despite Vale’s haughty comments and the sight of her teammates losing sticks (did she say sticks? Blast! The Slytherin captain’s words were latching onto her), Ruth was unable to stop the dopey grin that had plastered itself on her face. The whole experience was oddly euphoric.

A race to learn from.

The badger’s grip on her Silver Arrow tightened as she mustered her remaining energy to call, “Let’s go, let’s go Puffs!”

Bea smirked as her spell hit both AngelFyre and Ellie. What was that about winning, Hufflepuff? She was one of the better casters in the team thanks to duelling, and she'd use those skills wholeheartedly if it meant her team would win. Tucking her own wand back into it's holster along her arm, Bea tightened her grip on her broom, angling herself to remove some of that air resistance and kept on flying.

Of course it was probably wrong to shoot past everyone in the that freakishly narrow passageway but the Welsh girl wanted, no, needed, to push and push and push. She scoffed as she zipped to the next obstacle, and Brookline's eyes tried to identify it, but she felt it, instead. Warm sweat dripped down on her brow and her exposed skin felt like a thick slab of black, smoldering meat. Hot chicken skin slid up her neck and arms; it was already hot and now intense heat? Brookline could feel her cheeks swell and bloom with red, hands gripping her broom more than she should have, tiny splinters digging into the pads of her fingers.

Come on, come on. This heat….

The Ravenclaw was clearly exhausted but she continued, slipping past long, shimmering and harsh thorns. Perhaps this race is a little too much for her. Just perhaps.

Ow! Ellie's hand went to her arm where a spell had hit her. Taking away her hand she found a dap of blood on her finger. She looked around for the Ravenclaw who had cast it, she was an older student, one Ellie had no clue of her name. By the looks of it though, she had also got another Hufflepuff racer, Angelfrye. Damn where those ravenclaw's really coming for her this match!

And her wand was gone, she wasn't sure where it went, but it wasn't in her hand. Crap! she thought. What now? No spells thats for sure. Urgg! Ellie couldn't let this misfortune stop her from flying though, she had to keep going on. She wouldn't win but the higher up, the better her points she scored for her team at least.

"Blood! Blood everywhere! Any vampires in the crowd? I'll be sure to save you a few bags or two. Oh, and Simon finally remembered he was in a broom racing competition and got back on his broom. My dolls say hi!" Vale clapped her hands together, enjoying the massacre right before her eyes. But alas, it appears to be near its end. "What's this? I can't even see Dealla up there! But I'm pretty sure that's her throwing things down at our badgers! Oh, but Ruth seeks to punish Brookline with a fast sweep, and...! Brookline dodges like its nothing! And-welp, I guess AngelFyre and Ruth decided to give some space for the birds ahead of them instead! Come on, what's so scary about a bunch of wingless birds? They couldn't even beat us wonderous snakes this year! Oh? Booing? In the crowd? Don't worry! I'll find where you live after this race."

Don't worry, if you trust your team well enough, I'm sure you can be absolutely positive that Zephyr is right beside you! Don't ask him about dodging trees, though." Vale crackled at her own joke. Ah, she was gonna go home feeling refreshed. As if she were cleansed in the very blood of her own enemies. Thrilling indeed!
