As the moderator called start, Phelan quickly began his attack. His incendio duo at his seventh year opponent was unfortunately dodged, as was Aurelie’s spell. Castelobruxo seemed to be having more luck. Phelan managed to avoid Ariana’s spell, but in doing so didn’t see Ariam’s until it was too late. Petrificus totalus was certainly an uncomfortable spell to be under. Phelan glanced helplessly at the rest of his team, who were also a little worse for wear.

The lone seventh-year on the pitch found herself immediately the target of two opponents’ spells, but they were young yet and far too easy to spot. They had not yet quite learned how to craft a curse without giving away their hand motions or shouting just a bit too loud and too early, and because of that, Manu was able to dodge both as easily as ever. “It is a dance!” she crowed with delight before sending a Blasting Curse splitting towards the two girls on the much-younger team. It clearly took both of them by surprise; they’d probably never seen it cast before, and Manu’s sly spellwork was renowned throughout her school, her ability to accurately hit a target quite spoken of.

What a match this was, already.

The momentum Castelobruxo built up from that first round screeched to a crawl as spells crumbled and redirected. For Ariam, there was something about Geneviève that- even though his aim was towards Aurélie- caught his attention, hand wavering in the wand movement as only sparks flickering and splashing to the ground gave an indication of his attempt at casting Curse of the Bogies. Ariana took the mantle of targeting the Beauxbatons student instead, expertly arcing the Knockback Jinx towards Aurélie even as nearly avoided its path. Nearly was not enough, the impact sending her stumbling with a wavering consciousness. The 'reward' for this impressive hit was Manu's spell spiraling out of her control and exploding the ground near Ariana. Castelobruxo would get a taste of the damage caused to Beauxbatons previously.

Geneviève, now aware and concerned for Phelan, pointed her wand towards the boy to remove that paralysis. It wasn't a complete fix, joints stiff and robotic, but it would bring him back into the duel. With that help, he shook off the rest of the spell's effects and regain full control. Aurélie switched to an easier target yet with the failed spell of his own, he now had plenty of time for calculating trajectories and avoiding spellls. The Tickling Charm found no laughter amongst the duellists as it flew past and dissipated. The luck for both teams this round seemingly dissipated to nothing, but perhaps next round would prove different.

Okay, maybe duelling an older year would be much harder than anticipated. And not just any older year, a seventh year. It suddenly occurred to Aurélie how much of an experience disadvantage she was at. She shook her head to clear it of such negative thoughts. Sure, they weren't doing great, but there was definitely still time to turn this thing around.

Aurélie took just a second to shake out her wand hand. Obviously, she was just having bad luck today, not being able to cast some of the spells that she'd cast plenty of times before and not being able to dodge. But she'd get over it. She'd do better, of course she would.

At least her charm had helped Phelan get slightly unstuck from her Petrification. It wasn’t something that she was proud of but nonetheless it did help that he could somewhat move freely. She needed to focus and draw on some more power within her to at least knock one piece of the chessboard in front of her off its rocker.

At least one of them had stumbled slightly when a stray shot from their own spell hit them it seemed. How was it fair to throw together three third years and an amalgamation of older students? She wouldn't know honestly.

Manu's celebratory attitude came too early, dampened by her next spell just barely missing one of the younger kids from Beauxbatons; she wouldn't have missed but for one of her own teammates impressively hitting her target with a well-placed Knockback Jinx. Eca. Ugh.

She would just need to aim better next time. With a disgruntled grumble, Manu raised her wand and steeled herself for the next round.

Phelan watched in dismay as yet again, none of their attacks hit. Luckily, Genevieve’s counter spell was right on track. Phelan shot her a grateful glance, and shook off the rest of the spell. With it, he attempted to shake off his feeling of dread. He was going to need all his confidence to win this duel.
