Looking to her left and to her right, Kaitlyn noticed the group of students growing bigger by the moment. There were even a few waiting to spectate, as well! While it was not exactly like when there was a broom racing match, she appreciated just the sheer number of students in attendance. ‘I’d like the practice, so I don’t mind all of this. I just hope I can perform well, and frankly, not get hurt in the process. Regardless of what happens within this group of students, I want to make sure I at least tried … and hopefully understand what it is to be a broomracer. Who knows where that may play a part in my future here at Hogwarts?’

A smile formed on Kaitlyn’s lips as her mind raced. Her blue eyes looked around at the other students. She recognized a few faces, but only gave a smile to them. She even smiled friendly at the students sitting on the viaduct to spectate. It seemed like this would be entertaining … and not just for the students watching. From what she could tell, there was some competitiveness with the students flying, too. She was never a fan of competition.

Fixing her grip on the school broom, Kaitlyn gently glided closer to the other students. She wanted to be ready for when this race was set to begin. That required her to pay attention and to make sure she flew correctly, once it began. A nagging feeling in her mind made her believe it was likely to start soon. After all, a giant group of teenagers was found to feel antsy if there was no progress at all!

There were now plenty of people here. And it was clear that the race was on. Biting her lip, Maisie wondered how she would fair against students, many of whom she didn't know and many still who seemed older and more skilled. Still, it had to be better than that starfish and stick, didn't it?

Somewhere in the crowd, she recognized @Sere Nade, who'd moderated several unofficial duels for her. Maisie didn't know the Gryffindor well, but she recognized her. And she knew from her time on the piste that Sere was fair, something that remained to be seen about this whole event. Maisie gave her a gentle wave before turning her attention to everything going on getting this race off the ground.

Among the racer, she spotted @Ruth Fairchild, who had been on a Quidditch team with her—so, had some others. But perhaps more famously Maisie had forgotten the girl's name in the fall and it was so embarrassing that she ran away. Great. That's another person in addition to @Alyss Gilmour, who was probably avoiding her. Even though she tried to befriend people, it seemed like first year was just rough sometimes. Hopefully, however, the Hufflepuff would have let the name situation go by now. Besides, they'd done so well in Quidditch before. She gave her a smile.

For now, she leaned on the broom, ready for this shindig to start.

𝓐fter the excitement of the morning down by the boathouse, Evelynn had taken it upon herself to retreat to familiarity. Between various holiday obligations and cold weather, the sixth-year had spent very little time around her usual haunts. It didn't help that she had, for several months, attempted to maintain some semblance of a 'normal' teenage relationship. This had resulted in an uncharacteristic lingering in proximity to Gryffindor's MacAllister, that had generally seen them holed up in the common room or some semi-public location within the castle where the two of them could exist in company--complete privacy had always left her feeling just a bit uncertain with herself and had been avoided whenever possible. With warmer weather had come widening opportunities, however, and she had found herself lounging near the lake, reverting back to an old habit of lingering, sprawled along a tree-branch for a cat nap.

The first time she had heard hushed whispering and giggling pass by, she'd ignored it. The second, she had lifted her chin from its place of rest, pupils constricting into slits to glance in the direction of the noise, lingering upon a number of students as they made their way across the grounds, brooms slung over their shoulders. She had quickly dismissed them as coming back from flying or quidditch practice or some such endeavour and returned her furred muzzle to a place of comfort. The third time a student made themselves known along the same path, Evelynn realized that something must be afoot. Slipping from her place within the arboreal canopy, she reverted to a humanoid form as she descended, landing in a collected crouch to absorb the force of the fall. Eyes never wavering from the trail of students, she reached for her satchel. Curiously, there existed a common denominator: they all seemed to be traveling towards the viaduct, but not across it.

By the time she arrived on site, a number of students were already in the air. She caught glimpses of a few familiar faces: @Aly Salinger and @Piérre Marchonné were always easy for her to pinpoint. Yet her brows furrowed with bemusement. There was no race scheduled today as far as she was aware. Was there? Pulling her gaze from the airborne riders, she cast a glance around to those others whose feet yet remained firmly planted on the ground. She recognized a petite brunette nearby, and she approached. "Maisie, was it not?" she inquired, memory jogging on once she had closed the distance. She offered a polite smile, inclining her head at @Maisie Gemmell before glancing back to the brooms. "Do you know what is going on here?"

Even as she asked, she began to take stock of those others who were also present. There was a distinct lack of professors, prefects, or even sports captains, and no school nurse in sight. Eyes narrowed. A nagging feeling suggested that this was not necessarily a school sanctioned event. Lips pursed, left-hand fingertips reaching down her palm to rest lightly on the trigger of the quick-launch bracer hidden beneath the sleeve of her coat. With her luck, there would be an accident of some sort, necessitating intervention. Best be ready to release her wand... just in case...

Oonagh had not been in a proper broom race for a while, if one could call the sled-like broom race from the previous summer a broom race in the first place. This time however she had her trusty Firebolt with her, that would surely bring her the victory she deserved against whichever creatures she would face of. With the start of April, the beginning of spring was upon them and Oogie was flourishing. She however knew very well that it also meant a lot of work at home right now, her mother had already sent her mail regarding that and it was only in this instance that Oonagh actually enjoyed being in a boarding school, instead of being home with her family and the animals at the farm.

Well regardless, she had a race to win, so she grabbed the handle of her broom and headed toward the Viaduct, a part of the castle she had not properly explored so far, so why not do it with a race like this?

She saw some familiar faces and more students than expected at the start of the race, some of which would surely make her acquaintance throughout the race. Or rather acquaintance with her shoulders as she tries to knock them off their broom. A smug smirk curled at her lips as she waited for the signal to start.

Alyss truly didn’t understand how she had been roped into this. One moment she was ready to race, and the next, she found herself readying for her first moderation of an actual race. Which was terrifying. Thankfully, she had found her home on the broom relatively quickly, and it didn’t bother her when she pushed it to go even higher, to get a good view of what would be the race track. There was only one thing that was bothering Alyss, and that was another first year, with blue for her house color. Her name was Maisie Gemmell, and she was the one who knocked Alyss out of their duel, something Alyss just couldn’t let go, even if she tried. She made sure never to look directly at her, and she made sure everyone was getting into position. “On your marks! Get set… GO!” Alyss cried, and they were off.

Very quickly, there was some bad blood. Clearly Aly had predicted this, casting the infamous Shield Charm as soon as Alyss had let the word “GO!” leave her lips. Colin seemed to have targeted the sixth year, missing on his chance to blindfold her. Lyanna, a Hufflepuff showed her true colors, immediately moving to knock a Slytherin off his broom- this Slytherin being Prat, who swiftly dodged her attack before speeding off himself.

The spectators that littered the first stretch of the track seemed to not phase the racer, nearly all of whom flew by without a hitch. This was admittedly a surprise to Alyss, seeing as she expected for a quick movement from some of those that elected not to race, or had arrived narrowly too late to join in. Perhaps after they did their lap, the spectators would be a bigger challenge.

The next obstacle on their path wasn’t nearly as simple, with the vast majority of the racers having some trouble with the walls narrowing in on them as they flew, many banging into the stone that began to enclose them. Alyss winced as she observed, however decided it was about time she actually said something, rather than just watch. “That looked like it hurt, but so many of them are breezing through regardless!” Alyss eyed Maisie again, knowing that this time she would be too focused on the race to notice her stare. She was surprisingly…amazing at it? Alyss begrudgingly admitted that she was having one of the best races of them all, something that wasn’t a simple feat.

The trees brought yet another challenge, something that Alyss shouldn’t have been quite so happy to see. It wasn’t necessarily pleasant, watching a few racers smack into the branches, but it was certainly more entertaining than them just flying through a field that didn’t offer nearly enough of a challenge. Perhaps Alyss should be getting checked out for this. To hide her slight smile as Maisie hit one of the trees in her path, Alyss began to speak yet again, fighting to remind herself of what her purpose was “Now that the trees are starting to thin out, you can take a glimpse at the racers- quite a few of them are neck and neck! A few trees certainly aren’t going to stop them now!” she exclaimed, eyes narrowing at the colorful sight of the collection of students, soaring through the treetops, fighting for the right to lead.

It wasn't long after Emily bid Colin good luck that the race went in full swing. The racers flew past the crowd of spectators that remained on the viaduct. Colin's platinum bird-nest hairdo was unmissable. The Huffie could see his locks flap behind him as he zoomed alongside his fellow competitors. She clapped and waved at him as he flew overhead.

Much like the last broom race she witnessed, the competition was fierce. Even from all the way back on the viaduct, Emily could feel the determination to win and gloat from the racers.

Emily caught sight of one racer in particular who had managed to stretch a hair ahead of the rest of the competition. Emily recognised him... Kind of. From Colin's last broom race. The older looking boy. She couldn't help but quietly go "whoa..." when he sped ahead. If Emily blinked she probably would've missed him. He truly was proficient on a broom. Emily could understand the excitement Colin would have in his eyes when he'd race with the Gryffindor team. With a rival like that, no doubt there'd be banter in such a thrilling sport.

Emily turned her head and blinked when she spotted Evelynn. Good Lord. The last time they'd spoken, Emily had, had her first run in with dolls. In the end it wasn't the dolls she had to worry about. But a tree. Of all things. Thankfully Emily was done and dusted with that malarkey, the remnants of her mark no more than a faded bruise, so to see Evelynn when things were bright and colourful again was a nice change of pace. In fact, this might be the first time Emily had crossed paths with her where nothing was at stake. Emily smiled in Evelynn's direction before she became distracted with the events happening in the race.

Emily giggled when she saw Colin's hyperbolic expression. He was enjoying this. She cheered for him.

"You're doing good, Colin! Keep it up!"

"Maisie, was it not?"

"Em, hi, yeah," she bumbled out at the mere recognition of her name. Turning her head, she could an older red-headed student. She seemed a bit familiar—oh, right! She'd been the one in the stands, explaining to her and some others exactly how broomracing worked. Only now, it seemed like Maisie would have to do the explaining: "It's a race. Not an official one, mind you, but should be fun. That boy with the blonde hair started it." Her finger extended outwards towards @Colin McCoire. Not knowing anything about him, she didn't have much more to add, but she hoped she could help the Gryffindor—Eve something?—the way she'd helped her before. Besides, she somehow seemed like one of the few friendly faces around the viaduct, even as the crowd grew.

"Do you have a broom? I think there might still be space—" she was in the middle of suggesting this, when @Alyss Gilmour of all people set them off on their way with a loud "GO!" Looking down at the broom and up at@ Evelyn Decipio, she added, "Gotta go. Wish me luck." And somewhere unspoken was perhaps an invitation to connect, but all that was lost because this was serious now.

Early on, some spells had been cast, but Maisie stayed out of that. This wasn't the duelling piste. Instead, she focused on the track and the spectators that soon curled underneath them. They could have been distracting, but this was a race now. She had to focus. They then cut through a narrow passageway that tripped up some, but Maisie just stayed low enough on her broom to sail on through.

Finally, they came to a bunch of trees, which seemed to appear on the horizon sooner than she had expected. So much so that she clipped the edges of one of them, getting leaves strewn in her hair and along the sides of her clothes. She could only hope it had not cost her too much time.

And it perhaps it didn't as quite a few of them, including younger students were all just about level here—except Pierre. The Gryffindor flew with confidence out ahead of them. Maisie was not surprised; he had been a most excellent seeker on their unofficial team a few months back. If only there was some way to pull ahead, but for now all she could do was fly.

And they were off!

Even in the most dismal of locales (that did not give Hogwarts’ enough credit, for the Scottish scenery could be just as alluring as the expanses of white Durmstrang offered), racing never ceased to thrill Hans to his core. The wind whipping at his cheeks and tousling his hair, the freedom and adrenaline of the high-speed obstacle course, not the mention inline with the clouds and mountains.

The first obstacle, a cluster of spectators and a few faces he found familiar, could have barely counted as such as almost all of the competitors passed through them with ease. Keeping his eyes straight ahead despite the odd temptation to wave and call out a few words, the next offered more difficulty. A narrow passageway, and as far as he could tell almost all of his competitors did not pass this time, instead banging into the stone sides as their agility failed them. Hans too was subjected to this fate, though having no time to acknowledge the pain in his shoulder form the impact soon he brushed it off and set his eyes straight forward once more. Directly headed into the pathway of a maze of trees, one which nicked Hans in the arm as he passed, barely avoiding a full-on collision with its branch.

Despite the two hits he seemed to be doing well. Hans was one of the racers in the lead, beaten only and naturally so by a student who looked like he ought to be much older than him, with everyone else either around the same position in the track of the viaduct or long left in his dust. The colourful girl seemed to be behind him as well, but as long as he was leading he won't complain. Most of the faces he had seen on the starting line, yet one was new, for only just then did she enter his attention, yet by no means was she foreign. However, it was not any of the facial features that caught Hans’ attention but the volume of her wild, mane-like curls. Of course, daring as ever to join any and all events, competitive and pugnacious to the very bone was “Oonagh!

That was her name, wasn’t it? “Bumped into the walls?

𝓐s Ruth coaxed her trusty Comet towards the starting line, a slight breeze started to pick up. Hold on, Ruth thought to herself. It hadn't been the breeze. She glanced to her side as her best friend wobbled over, path slightly. She raised a brow at Pamela's newly developed nickname, but didn't question it. "Pam," she smiled at the girl, then focused her eyes to the front, where everyone seemed to be shuffling into starting positions.

Ruth leaned forward slightly, eyeing everyone with amused curiosity. Many people she had seen come and go within the hallways of Hogwarts, but she didn't know any well enough to gauge who to avoid. "Not very high," she replied to Pamela on her anxious query of the chances of falling. "I've seen you in Flying class--you'll be fine." She shot the girl another smile, only this one was wider and cheekier. "Don't worry, I'll catch you if you do. But," she wagged a finger. "Not guaranteed."

Ruth watched Alyss' lips part, then narrowed her eyes, focusing right in front of her. Sigh. People. Simple enough...after all, she had to dodge huge crowds whenever she attempted to head to class on time.

How hard would it be on the broom?

With a solid push, Ruth was off, whizzing away from Pamela as she leaned into her Comet like she was trying to fuse with it. Lucky for her, not to promise to save Pamela should she fall--Soon after they started, Ruth had left her best friend behind.

Only now did the hard part come in. Ruth bit her lip as she aimed towards the space between the walls, much narrower than she would have liked. She cut a corner, overtaking Kaitlyn. Big mistake. In her haste, Ruth headed straight for the rock, slamming her shoulder against it. She gritted her teeth in pain and veered back onto track, tucking her legs tighter around her broom. As she zoomed out of the passageway, Ruth glanced at her sleeve. Tattered, but not too much that her skin would have been grazed.

By this time, Ruth had left several behind. But not enough. Flanking her sides were several other racers, one she recognised to be Maisie, and...

Her breath hitched. Was that Piérre? Instantly, the sight of the older lad brought back a flashback to the darker times of the new year, and for a moment, she lost momentum and slammed into a tree. This threw her out of the haze, and she snapped back to focus, only just spinning out of the way of another. Yet, it was hard to tear her gaze away from the Gryffindor (only he seemed to be wearing Ravenclaw colours today? Hold on, was this one of his clones? Uhhhhhh) before her.

Snap out of it.

"YAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!" As soon as Captain Aly shouted go all four hundred and eighty-seven racers shot off into the air! Emmi's encouragement still ringing in his ears, Colin decided that no race was complete without a bit of magic! He jabbed his Naur an Edraith in the direction of particularly troublesome racer, who happened not to be Piérre Marchonné! "Obsucro!" he cried, but Salinger managed to dodge his artful casting!

"Drat!" he muttered.

"Salinger!" he shouted. "That was a lucky dodge! Ye'd look so bonny flying with a blindfold!" By now it was practically a signature move of his to blindfold some hapless racer. And who didn't mind flying blind from time to time anyway? And, of course, the older girl would have to cast some kind of protection charm around herself.

Colin shook his head as he charged on through the maze of spectators standing on the Viaduct. He wiggled this way. He wiggled that way. Vailerama easily evaded all the kids watching the race! He noted with some satisfaction that his dorm mate Prat skillfully evaded a blatch attempt by some random Hufflepuff. "Hah! Good one Prat!" he called over. Sure, this might be every racer for himself, but that didn't mean he couldn't encourage one of his own!
