Leaves crunched underneath as June made her way to the broom racing track, eyebrows slightly knit together. She was missing something, surely. Some large, grand piece of the puzzle of broom racing, some strategy or technique she had never considered, some aspect of athleticism that her team was overlooking. Because if that wasn't true... Well, June didn't want her fears to become reality.
Another mock race. The last one she held years ago had to be cancelled mid-race for unsafe racing conditions (whether that was natural or perhaps a remnant of whatever plagued the Brisk Basilisks was something June had pondered a few times), but this time June had quadruple-checked the course and the weather the day before.
This was an experiment, a period of observation. June would fly above and alongside the racers, watching how they flew and their strategies, no commentary would be provided. She couldn't be distracted, not this time.
Racers arrived to the starting line under a clear autumn blue sky. "Thank you all for participating in this race, it's very much appreciated," June would start once the last racer arrived. "I'll be flying alongside you all during the race, so don't fling any spells at me or I will blatch you off your broom. That's a legal move in this sport, don't forget." She smiled lightly, the comment was mostly in jest. "If any of you would like an analysis after the race of your performance, I'd be happy to give one. For now, racers! Mount your brooms."
June climbed aboard her Silver Arrow, kicking off to put her just above the teams. "Oh, and above all," she smiled genuinely, a stark contrast to the more solemn face she had worn until now, "have fun, and fly fast." She truly did love this sport. "On your marks, get set... RACE!"

AEIOUSAPrat strutted towards the field, his Comet 180 glinting in the early morning sun. The sleek lines of the broom filled him with a strange mix of excitement and trepidation for the afternoon to come. It was his after all first race. He had to admit, he wasn't quite sure what to expect in this new endeavour. He'd seen it before, of course. Rarely does one go in Hogwarts without seeing the scores. However watching and participating were two can of worms. The moment had come, and his stomach felt like a flock of nervous pixies had taken up residence in his gut.
"Good afternoon, June," he addressed the Slytherin Captain hoping to hide the quiver in his voice, they hadn't talked a lot but he was aware of her existence. Some would consider this being acquaintances. hoping to hide the quiver in his voice. The day's truth was, Prat wasn't sure what he even had to do with broom racing. Yet it was too late for any second thoughts now. The other racers were arriving and he needed to keep up appearances. Prat had always been good at it, using charm and confidence as his shield. A façade that had gotten him out of more scrapes than he cared to admit.
With the other students beginning to trickle in, Prat took his time to size them up, offering them all a friendly smile, his chosen method of projecting confidence. The air grew tense as the starting line filled up. Prat's heart pounded in his chest, his grip tightening on the broom handle. The other racers' whispers and murmurs into the background, The anticipation was palpable.
June's voice echoed through the air. "On your marks, get set......RACE!"

Rake In A Victory
The crunch of the autumn leaves crinkled under the rugged black combat boots that adorned Aleksandra’s feet. The cool crisp air nipped at Aleksandra’s fair pale skin giving her cheeks a tint of pink from the nippiness of the wind’s kisses. Her platinum blonde hair was pulled up in a high ponytail secured with a hair tie and for safety precautions a obsidian black scrunchy with little rose intricate design embedded into it. While the sunlight seemed to shine down onto the girl making her hair almost whiten blonde hair shimmering like a diamond in the autumn sun.
The young girl was not sure what she really was doing besides the fact that she was doing a mock race was it? Flying was not her strong suit. Honestly the girl had a broom and never did much with it. The broom wasted away in her home and sense she attended Hogwarts she kept it in her dorm of course the girl was not a monster and did well to maintain her broom by cleaning it and doing the proper care it needed just like it was one of her plants that resided in her dorm tended and loved. The only thing the girl had room for in her heart really. Tinderblast in hand the young girl gripped the handle tightly hoping that if anything were to happen she would land semi safely onto the ground or hold onto her broom as tightly as possible.
Flying was a freedom for Aleksandra to escape. A way to be in the air free as a bird. Feeling the wind kissing your face, whipping at one’s hair stinging one’s eyes with its bitter tiny knives. The sky was one’s playground, especially Aleksandra’s even if the girl was not a skilled flyer she was calculated and seemed to study about brooms and of course the young Slytherin girl spent a majority of her time watching birds dancing around the sky as if it was their own vast ballroom. Free as a bird that was what Aleksandra wished for to be free and to escape the cage that she was held captive in.
The closer Aleksandra got towards the meeting spot of this mock race the young noticed a few familiar faces and those that she never saw nor did she honestly care these children were just pawns on a chess board blank faces that she could care less about. The young girl could barely tell any of these extra’s apart; they all looked similar and all seemed to be a nuisance to the girl's gray eyes. Cold sores that just blurred in with the landscape. An older girl seemed to be in charge though Aleksandra could not remember her name off the top of her head but recalled she was on the broom racing team she saw her in a few races, but that’s all Aleksandra really cared to recall.
The young girl’s eyes landed on a familiar ravenette haired boy, one who usually was the girl’s major problems, him and Cass Ito of course she agreed to team up with these two idiots she has found the utter annoyance to have as company. Standing beside the taller boy Aleksandra glanced over, nodding her head slightly, a bored expression on the girl’s face. She wanted to fly quickly and get this race over with, but at the same time this was a perfect excuse to fly around on her broom and feel the wind nipping dangerously at her face. Freedom which Aleksandra did not have much of not with her company that she kept around.
Hearing the older girl speak which most of Aleksandra only caught bits and pieces the young girl was a tad distracted watching and analyzing all of her competition coming up with a mental strategy as she mounted her broom keeping her gray eyes focused on the older girl awaiting for the notion to go forward.
Everything seemed to moved at a slow pace for Aleksandra as if everything started to become sluggish and the pounding in the young girl’s ears rang viciously everything seemed to just slow for Aleksandra.![]()

Yolanda ran up to the race. She hardly recognized anyone – it didn’t help that she was running and hardly looking where she was going. She had a school broom in hand and was obviously a fresh faced First Year.
She knew it was a mock race but it felt real to her…
Yolanda listened as June told them all not to cast any spells at her – which had never crossed her mind – but she realized there was a certain danger to this whole event. She really should have thought of that before the race. She really didn’t want to get blatched off of anything especially her broom high in the air.
Oh well – what was a race without a little danger?
“Mount your brooms!” Yolanda heard June call out.
Yolanda stood to the side and put her right hand out – calling the broom ‘up’ into her hand. She quickly mounted her broom gave her feet a solid plant.
This would be fun – Yolanda was glad to have an excuse to get on the broom. She didn’t know much about it but it would be interesting to give it a go.
“On your marks, get set… RACE!”
Yolanda pushed off – this would be great!

Alyss had her eyes forward, smile firmly on her face, and hands shaking as she made her way towards the starting line. She had enjoyed watching broom racing matches, and had signed up for the team’s waitlist as a spontaneous decision, thinking it could be fun. When she had heard about the opportunity for the unofficial race with low stakes and with the Slytherin captain moderating, Alyss said yes immediately without any consideration for her future self.
Alyss’s strong suit was certainly not flying. She could do it, sure. It wasn’t like she truly sucked at it either. But being on a broom required much more precision and skill than many anticipated, herself included. She was great at throwing herself at problems over and over until she got past it, something her parents had called “brute forcing” the problem. She had always shrugged it off and continued on with her life, but a month into Hogwarts and Alyss could see what they meant.
She was great at getting past issues, but never quite continuing with them after they got more difficult or didn’t benefit her in quite the same way. She wasn’t a master at much of anything, instead more “good enough” at the majority of things she tried her hand at. This was why she was sporting A’s in flying. She had no reason to practice, and she got a passing grade, and so saw no reason to truly dedicate herself.
Thankfully, in a moment of spontaneity or maybe clearness of mind, she signed up and was put on the waitlist for two sports. Now, should she get on the roster, it would force her to try her hand at mastery, no matter how difficult. One thing about Alyss? She doesn’t flake. So she could stick it out to the end, but needs the motivation. Perhaps this race would provide her with that.
Mounting her broom with a grim look on her face, she let go of all sense of true reality upon hearing the word “RACE!”

Cass's attempts to pester their father into buying them a better broom for them over the holidays had unfortunately been fruitless, but that still wasn't going to stop them from being extremely excited about this race. Absolutely crushing the competition with their friends (Whether they would be called friends back or not. It wasn't optional) was going to be awesome. It seemed Cass was on the earlier end of racers arriving, because there wasn't a lot of people there. Unless it was a small race. Cass didn't really know too much about it. Apart from the fact that they were gonna win it and have so much fun doing so. Besides from their absolutely amazing wonderful best broom racing teammates ever, there were two shorter girls that looked like firsties and... no one else. Maybe everyone was just late.
Bouncing over to greet their teammates, Cass noticed that both of them looked far too serious for the occasion. "What's wrong with your faces?" they asked. It was easy to understand that clearly they were the top picks to win this thing (This was a mindset that they would have maintained even if they were racing against a team of all seventh years) and even if by some miracle they didn't it was still going to be super fun and better than sitting around sulking all day like most of their house seemed to want to. What was the point of winning unless you enjoyed it? Speaking of winning. It was pep talk time. Before a race or a match or a duel someone always said we are going to do so good yada yada beat them all yada yada and then SLYTHERIN loudly. It was just what you did at sports.
Cass didn't feel particularly qualified to give this talk though. Yes they were a dueling co-captain, but half of their team was taller than them and they had only been in their job for one stage. "We" said the short second year "Are going to beat them" they pointed at the small handful of other racers for emphasis "And then go find something to eat because I am hungry". There. That was a half-decent pep talk, if they did say so themself. It was missing the SLYTHERIN loudly but they had a sneaking suspicion that Aleks might just leave if they tried to get her to do that. No matter. They could do it after they had won.
