Winnie had used the excuse of needing to study harder for her OWLs to keep herself away from her friends and Mathias, but it was becoming increasingly difficult. Being a no show tonight of all nights was likely to worry her friends and tip Matt off that something was off.
After her freak out in the abandoned classroom, she had spent many restless nights trying to decide her next move, unaware that she was several steps behind the pureblood. She was smart enough to know she had to play it safe, had to keep him believing that she was still under his spell, that she wasn’t slipping away.
It was the only way to keep her friends safe from him, or other girls, because Merlin only knew who he would target if Winnie actually managed to leave him.
She had to use tonight to get back into his good graces, to convince him that nothing was wrong.
The presents Mathias had gifted her had been painstakingly repaired through various reparo spells and a late night of ensuring the clasps on the jewelry were secured. Her wrist and neck were adorned with the repaired bracelet and necklace. Surely a girl terrified of her boyfriend wouldn't wear the things he had given her, right? ... The Ravenclaw had reapplied her makeup thrice after trembling hands had messed up her eyeliner.
She straightened her posture to try and appear composed as she walked into the entrance of the Great Hall, but her heart was hammering against her chest, betraying her true feelings. As Winnie stood at the entrance of the gala, her eyes scanned over the faces of her peers until they locked onto Mathias. Her stomach jolted.
He was dressed in pink. Her usual colour.
It suddenly dawned on her that Mathias might have been expecting her to wear pink tonight so they would match. Her breath catching in her throat, she glanced down at the gown she had worn for the evening.
The dress had once belonged to her grandmother, a silky white gown with off-the-shoulder sleeves that left her freckled skin exposed to the night air. She had paired the look with white stiletto heels, a wide brim hat adorned with flowers, and dainty silk opera gloves. Her hair had been left to fall down to her waist in soft curls.
When she had checked the mirror before she left, she couldn't help but notice that she looked less like a child playing dress up, and more like a young woman.
But there was Mathias, in his fuchsia threads, making her wish she had a pink puffy sleeved dress to hide behind instead.
Taking in a deep breath, she summoned the courage to walk towards her boyfriend, lest he try and kiss some random redhead in pink again. There would be no escaping to Percival this time, she had managed to keep their friendship hidden from Mathias, thank Merlin, or he might have wound up in the same position as poor Finnegan.
Appease. Lie. Keep him calm.
"Hi Mattie," She greeted him, forcing her usual cheerful voice. She'd step closer and wrap her arms around his middle, gazing up at him with a smile. "You look handsome. I wish I had worn pink... I thought we were only allowed to wear black or white."

♥♥♥ "OH! Uh, like yanno, uh a famous celebrity! Like specifically, probably the main actor in a film or something," She tried to explain, not entirely sure how to explain the concept of movies if that was not common in the magical world, as it suddenly dawned on her that he might not have grown up with the muggle lifestyle that she had. Maybe he grew up with magic! Now that she thought about it, Hogwarts was not exactly filled with technology so, maybe, they did not have movies?
She had no idea, so she decided to continue to explain. "Are movies a thing? I guess, it's like the moving photographs or a portrait or something but usually longer. Like two hours or so. The leading roles usually go to popular celebrities. Yanno, they look like, well, this," She continued her explanation with a little handwave to gesture over his appearance. He had the whole handsome, well-dressed, ready to rock the red carpet look down - and the whole aura to go along with it.
The young girl did not lack self-esteem by any means but she was also not arrogant enough to think of herself as a star, at all. Never in her life (not that that was particularly long) had she received so many compliments from someone. It constantly threw her off. He was certainly charming and she found herself consistently grinning at him to cover her blush, "No, no, you stay in the limelight, I'll be the one interviewing you when you become famous," She joked. She did not particularly mind being the centre of attention occasionally but she could not envision herself as someone famous - for starters, what would she even be known for?! She did, however, enjoy being a reporter and getting to write or photograph things.
"Ok. But you have to stop getting me things. At least, let me get you something!" She had no idea what that thing was yet but she would figure it out. Perhaps she could make him something. He had made her a wooden dumbbell, after all, so maybe he liked whittling. Maybe she could do something with that. In truth, she had no idea anything about whittling or carving something out of wood but she could try that or maybe get him some sort of equipment to help that.
She smiled at him, shaking her head, "I think you give me far more credit than I deserve. A picture does say a thousand words. I think the photographs do more of the talking for themselves than anything to do with my skills," Photography was something she always enjoyed. Going on hikes with her mama, having adventures with her abuelo (grandpa) or even hanging out with her abuela (grandma), she always wanted to remember those moments. It was not just about views, it was about trying to capture the emotions as she felt a photograph should help her remember and feel how she felt in that moment.
The fact that he seemed to recognise that so quickly meant a lot more to her than she admitted. "But I'm looking forward to developing them later. Hopefully, they'll turn out okay," It was always hard to tell but she was learning to properly develop the photos now that she could no longer resort to just digital photos. Using a muggle camera was certainly easier in many ways!
Xiomara could not help but grin widely as he agreed to getting some food first, "Now that is a great idea, mister," She joked as she raised a finger to her head before tapping it a few times to indicate that she liked the way he thought, "We should do that before everyone ruins the display," She agreed. Her mama would kill her if she got a TikTok account or something but she could see herself becoming a social media food influencer in the future. However, it would have to be limited to the holidays. She would also have to be older before her mum allowed her to make videos.
Grabbing his hand, she tucked him towards the table a little faster as the idea grew on her. It would look much better before everyone started eating it. As she approached, she started to notice the details of the food. A table of horror-themed snacks and handwritten notes on another table for each decade. Carefully moving her bouquet under the arm, she took the camera in both hands once more and started to fiddle with it. She crouched down, pointing the camera upwards as she captured the large centrepiece with the lights from a chandelier peeking out from behind it. It was certainly a unique cake with the whole skull thing it had going on.
She took a few more photos, taking a few different angles of the entire display as well as taking closeups of different things that captured her interest. As she snapped away, she found herself deciding what she wanted to try. It was pretty much everything. Everything looked so good, and she just had to try it all. Okay, she could become a food blogger.
Pausing, she looked over her shoulder as she stood up again - realising that she was getting too invested in the photography and ignoring her date. He caught her attention as he spoke about what he wanted, genuinely curious about what he had picked as she was still stumped. She blinked. That was all he wanted? She was usually not in front of the camera, as she was the one that usually remembered to take the photo, "Oh, yeah, of course, you can!" She held out the camera for him and posed by throwing up the peace sign with her fingers with one hand whilst holding the bouquet in the other.
Xiomara adjusted her hat a little as she tilted her head before going back to her pose, "Wait- we should take one together too!" She exclaimed out of excitement, realising that the camera might have had some sort of timer setting, right? If not, he probably had long enough arms to take a selfie with it! She would pose with a wide grin rather than being silly if he went for it.
After the mini photo shoot, she grabbed a plate and filled it with a little bit of everything that looked good - mostly desserts, in fairness. Stuffing her face with a heart-shaped cookie, she was suddenly aware that if she was in front of a camera more often then most of her photos would be of her eating, which was probably not the best look! But if they were going into a maze, they might take ages to find the way out and then they would get hungry! They needed substance and fuel to make it through! "Okaythisisreallygood," She mumbled out as she nodded to herself and pointed aggressively at the cookie before taking a bite out of the cupcake that she had picked up. Would it be weird of her to do an article about how good food is at each event?!

Gala of Mysteries

Mathias’s eyes gleamed with dark amusement the moment Winnie’s voice reached him, her forced cheerfulness like a cloying perfume. He had already seen her long before she reached him—so predictable, so fragile in her attempts to maintain control. His gaze traced her every step as she walked toward him, adorned in her grandmother’s white gown, not that he knew from where the dress came from. While lovely, it was almost laughable—white. A symbol of purity, of innocence. As if that could shield her from what he already knew.
When she wrapped her arms around his middle and gazed up with that carefully crafted smile, Mathias’s hand brushed her back lightly, fingers barely grazing the delicate fabric of her dress, but the coldness in his touch was unmistakable. The smile that curled his lips was as thin as a knife's edge. He leaned down just slightly, his voice a low whisper that only she could hear, weaving into her ear like a spell.
“Pink, white, black—what does it matter, darling? We’re all tangled in the same threads of fate, after all. Threads that can strangle if one isn't careful.”
He pulled back just enough to look down at her, his gaze sharp, cutting through her forced calm. His fingers trailed briefly over the necklace she wore—the one he had given her, painstakingly repaired as if she thought the broken pieces had gone unnoticed. Some of it had. The delicate clasp was almost invisible, but he knew that clasp had been tampered with. Everything she did—her trembling hands, her hurried repairs, her careful makeup—was a transparent act. He did not see it all, but he saw enough of it to know. But she was playing her part, the dedicated girlfriend who was very much in love. Mathias had already seen through her performance, bravo.
Perhaps it would be a lifelong show.
“You did try,” he murmured, his tone condescending, as his fingers lightly touched the bracelet on her wrist, his smile deepening when he felt her pulse quicken beneath his hand. He did not identify that repair despite his superficial search for it. “But you should know by now, I always see the frayed threads. The little things you try so hard to mend.”
Mathias’s gaze flicked briefly to the crowd, sensing the presence of her friends nearby, their watchful eyes, their likely worry. How much had she shared if anything? He suppressed a laugh. Probably little if anything. How noble of her, this attempt to protect them. Did she truly think he hadn’t noticed her pulling away? Winnie Harper, always a few steps behind.
He brought his focus back to her, his smile darkening. “You look stunning tonight, Winnie. You make me think of a blushing bride more than a ball date…” His voice trailed off as he studied her, but there was something predatory in the way his eyes lingered. "But perhaps a bit... out of place. Like a thread from a different tapestry."
Mathias leaned in closer, his lips grazing the shell of her ear again as he spoke in a low, ominous tone, something more intimate than any public display.
“I know what you’ve been up to, Winnie. You think I don’t see the game you’re playing? Keeping secrets from me, pretending nothing’s wrong…” He paused, his fingers brushing through her hair briefly before pulling away, his touch lingering like a curse. “But that’s the thing about games, love. I’m always several moves ahead.”
His gaze hardened, the charming smile twisting into something far more sinister. “You think you can slip away, unravel what we’ve built?” He chuckled softly, the sound carrying a note of something ancient, something dark, as though the very air around them crackled with foreboding. “I’ll tell you a secret. No matter how far you pull away, no matter how you struggle, those threads of fate are already woven too tightly around you. And your friends. It’s too late to stop what’s coming.”
He shifted slightly, casting a glance at the enchanted chandelier above, its lights dimming ever so slightly as the magic in the room seemed to thrum with an invisible tension. “You can thank me later for making your journey to this point as painless as I have—without me, you’d have known far too much, far too soon. Memories are such tricky things, aren’t they? A little too much of the truth, and you might start questioning the whole world.”
Mathias’s voice dropped lower, almost a hiss, as he pulled her closer, his grip tightening just enough for her to feel his strength beneath the elegant exterior. “But there are certain truths you should never chase, Winnie. Truths that can break you. Have you forgotten the warnings, the old stories? The hags in the forest used to tell them, about girls who wandered too far off the path... never to return. I’d hate to see you meet the same fate.”
He loosened his grip, allowing her to breathe, his demeanor shifting once again to something outwardly pleasant, though the menace still lurked in his eyes. “So, no more wandering, yes? Let’s enjoy the evening, like old times unless you would rather they be like new times.” His voice returned to that velvet tone, but the weight of his words lingered, like an unseen web tightening around her, pulling her back into his control.
He offered her his arm, the gesture poised and princely, but the look in his eyes was a challenge. “Shall we?” As she reached or failed to reach towards him. As she decided to stubbornly hold her ground, to deny him what would be his regardless a smirk would tug at the corner of his face. His hand pat on the bulge in his pocket.
"Actually," he stopped her or he conceded. Who the hell knows. He dropped to one knee right then and there on the ballroom floor in front of dozens of recently traumatized witnesses and loudly announced for even those that did not wish to hear. "Winnie Harper, will you marry me." He would fish from his pocket a box, it looked old with a sort of bedazzled exterior. They were semi-precious stones inlaid into a metallic box that the light hit brilliantly. He snapped the lid open with a single hand to reveal a solitaire stone, the bezel set gold ring with a baguette band was stunning and in any other scenario a woman would be elated. This was no such scenario.

"I'm so nervous, Kenz," she told her best friend as she carefully pulled two pieces of hair down around her face. "I know I shouldn't be, after all, it's just Prat, but... I dunno, I just hope things go well, you know?" She stepped away from the mirror that both girls were using and inspected her dress. She wore a red, flowy, floor length dress that had been made specifically for the ball. She smiled, the dress was gorgeous, I look amazing, no way he won't notice. The thought surprised her, since when did I care what he thought of me?
Shaking her head, Alex walked back over to Kenzie by the mirror. She watches in the mirror as her friend finishes with her makeup. "i'm dreading wearing those heels. Like, yes, they're super cute, but they look stupidly uncomfortable," she complains. "Anyway, you look beautiful, stop fiddling with your hair and let's get going!" The excited young Gryffindor walked over to her bed and opened the box that her black heels were in, she sighs as she puts them on. I did this to myself... She stood up and grabbed her small silver bag of her bed that contained her wand in case of a disastrous event and make up in case of a disastrous beauty event.
She took Kenzie's hand and dragged her out of their dorm, through the common room, and out of the portrait hole. "This is going to be absolutely awesome!" She adjusted her hairpiece that was holding her hair back as she continued to drag her best friend to the Great Hall where the ball was being held.
The two girls finally reached the entrance to the ball and Alex pulled Kenzie to the side. "Okay, I am going to go find Prat. How do I look? There's no lipstick on my teeth, right?" She asked, flattening her dress nervously. Once it was confirmed that she looked fine the brunette flashed her friend an excited smile and ran off into the Great Hall to look for her date.
It took a few minutes but she eventually found him near a table of food. His back was turned to her as she walked up to him and gently put her hand on his shoulder. "Hey," she said softly.

┏ ┓ Attending a ball two days after the Hogsmeade disaster might seem facetious to some, but to Madhup, it was exactly the right course. The cries of the wounded, the silence of the dead, the stench and sight of charred corpses had plagued the hours since, waking or otherwise. He needed a distraction. That was why, when all was said and done, he numbly resumed his original objective of bribing Dealla Prince to go to the dance with him. He would court a witch the only way he could think to: tracking her down with a Valentine's card, a batch of enchanted roses, a (partially melted) bar of chocolate, and the claw of a griffon that he playfully claimed to have pried from the beast with his own perfect teeth. It wasn't the most orthodox proposal, yet the effort was evident. Mad wanted to bask in her presence spend time with someone he considered to be as interesting as himself. He wanted to have fun and resume some sense of normalcy, and he didn't want to do it alone.
What was more, the Durmstrang Chaser had heard all about how these dances were a "source of danger". He reasoned he and Dee made a fine duo, with him bringing the brawn and her the brains. It didn't hurt that they were also inarguably stunning. Loosely adhering to the theme, Madhup drew from his knowledge of old films, settling on a suit somewhere between 60's mobster and modern chic. It wasn't hard to find a set of spats and dress shoes in Hogsmeade, a classic look topped off by a black fedora. A thin gold chain and thick rings polished it off. His eyes had the telltale bags of one who had recently experienced their first Hogwarts calamity, but he hid them behind a pair of round sunglasses. The only hiccup had happened when he saw his date's dress and overenthusiastically endeavored to match her. A Color-Change Charm gone wrong had initially turned the black-and-white getup into a tie-dyed mess of various pinks and greys. With Dee's help, he had corralled it back into a rich wine red, and was content to bury his blunder with praise for her talent. He had asked for a hand, and should she give it, walked with fingers interlaced and a smug grin in place.
This school really had a flare for the dramatic, he'd give it that. The decor and ambiance were over the top in the best of ways, immersing attendees in a charming theme, and Mad could appreciate the theatrics. His school was mostly militant. It was a breath of fresh air for the fun-loving miscreant, who idly took to people-watching while sizing up the refreshments from afar. Talk of games would naturally attract the competitive couple. As much as Madhup didn't care for riddles or puzzles, he did like a challenge, and would have been happy to puppydog after Dee wherever she decided to lead him. While crossing the threshold however, he couldn't help overhearing the loud declaration of "Winnie Harper, will you marry me." The visitor lacked all context for just how problematic significant this pairing really was, but he was still shocked to see people his age committing to a lifelong union. It was a disconcerting spectacle to come across during a first date, though he took it in stride, a drawl of judgmental amusement in his voice as he whispered near Dee's ear, "Is this normal for Hogwarts dances?"┗ ┛ Headed towards Haunted Halls with Dee. | ••••••••• | ••••••• 𝖘 anguinius was no stranger to a gathering, much less a decorative and lucullian ball that was, unnecessarily, embellished with the motifs of a deeper meaning from either a book or a wayfaring interest. He had attended way too many similarly hosted parties for him to list off at the top of his head at this point. Prior to showing up, he had seen the poster for the met gala with the invitational message attached to it in nearly every hall that was in the forsaken castle, as if it was a substantive cry for help, and for one, he wasn't sure on what the theme called for at first - but from the meaning that stemmed from the word "noir", all he could guess was that a touch of fatalistic monochrome was tied to it. He had not accounted for his presence in the event, as he had other matters to do than idle around in an otherwise packed room of sardines with nothing but a scoff and a satirical reply lingering upon his lips to whom ever tried to strike a conversation with him. However, his initial remission had completely changed when he had found out that the girl he had been so speculative about was also rearing to go to the ball after overhearing from a fellow lionsman. He didn't know the Ravenclaw's girl name, per say, but she had reminded him of a vague memory that he had long stashed away inside of his mind, cluttered piles of half-formed impressions stacking upon it until it could no longer be found - if it was out of sight, it was out of his mind. There was a half-blood who had visited Crown's Peak with her grandparents a few years ago, he had recalled of how Andronikos was a nasty hellion about the affair right after - making sure that Sanguinius knew every detail of the trip, relaying every frustrated tear that came out of the girl's crimson-rimmed eyes, of the way she ran off to the library that was on the completely other side of the villa after he had spoken. She was seeking for a hiding place, like a scurrying, frightened rat. Good thing she knew that she was an abomination, crossbreeds shouldn't even be allowed to be kept, Andronikos had laughed back then. Andronikos's existence was the physical embodiment of all things that were unholy, a constant source of torment in his life. Wicked, blasphemous, a drop of poison in an otherwise vibrant contents of a chalice, he tasted of egocentrism and the crackling sound of betrayal. Sanguinius had found out sooner than later that his name was one of that was not to be uttered, best left unspoken, otherwise he would be beckoned to come forth from a circle of candlelit wax and decedent sacrifices. And yes. He fucking hated his half-brother. Sanguinius wouldn't lie and cut his own hand short, but he had also stoked the fuel to the raging storm that had already resided within Andronikos, and added in a few remarks that he was not proud of. He had come a long way, grown from his pettiness like the branches of an olive tree, and was not the same person as before. Or he dearly hoped he wasn't. Fruits of the labor and all that. Somehow, there was just a feeling that came along with the other blonde, one that he wasn't certain of and instead made him feel like a heavy anchor that was tethered to the sea floor. He grumbled, as he fiddled with the collar of his leather coat, the cadence of his footsteps being the only indicator of his presence as he came down the familiar hallway that would soon lead to the Great Hall. Aside from the leather wear, he was wearing a suit that he had packed in his trunk beforehand, with gothical patterns woven into the material - unseeable to the eye as it blended with the base color and also matched with his trousers. A dark hue of burgundy in the shape of a scarf was lazily hanging off of his shoulders, flapping behind him as he walked, slowly making him regret his fashion decision. The pair of black gloves that he donned remained tight against his skin despite his actions, their smooth surface a stark contrast to the rough texture of the coat. He was not wearing his ring tonight, a piece that was always circled around his left ring finger like the able thorns of a rose, and a large memento of his family by far. However, that didn't mean that he also had other kinds of golden jewelry on him. Like the studding in his ears or the ruby locket clasped around in his neck. He thumbed along to the inside of his palm in an absentminded gesture - a habit he had formed recently. Stepping over the border that separated him from the hollow atmosphere of the ballroom and the frigid air that clung to the stone walls outside, he was met with the sight of macabre excessiveness. It looked like the devil's sacrament with the way the fog began to lick at his shoes, rolling over them with the slowness of a diricrawl. The dim lighting flickered ominously, casting stretched shadows that danced along the furniture, with splatters of faux blood and other kinds of crime scene-related evidence on top. Fake or not, Sanguinius wouldn't be surprised if he found a cadaver placed by an idiot that would have thought it was a genius thing to do. He swiped a mocktail from the table that was beside him, bringing it up to his lips as he scanned the rapidly swelling crowd in the room. There were a fair number of faces that he recognized from the days he had spent hazing the ground of wherever he went in the castle, leaving only a scorched trail in his wake. And among them were those countenances were most definitely not from Hogwarts. His glare glided over to their forms, and was quick to witness the internal panicking of a boy who had been standing next to who must have been his date, his hair a densely, malleable color of white. Sanguinius huffed in amusement - savoring the richness that entailed in the ichor of the drink in his hand. That was, until he felt something, or rather - a person, bumping into him, almost making him drop the beverage. " Of all the possible times, " He hissed, his voice barely above a whisper yet brimming with venom. Sanguinius stood still, his posture rigid as he fought the urge mentally prepared himself to not make the unlikely decision of clenching his fist and punching the living daylights out of the source. He turned around, a furious expression etched across his face, ready to confront whoever had dared to intrude upon his moment of enjoyment - after all, who in their right mind would want to disrupt such a rare respite? Well, whomever it was, must have wanted to be at the very of Sanguinius's "piss me off and I'll make your downfall real" list. She - Wait, she? It was the Ravenclaw girl. Her presence was a twilight glow against the backdrop of the ballroom, and her hair, the color of honey, descended in soft waves that framed her face, somehow capturing the faint illumination and shimmering like liquid gold. Each strand seemed to have a place, flowing gracefully down her back and drawing attention effortlessly. For a brief moment, the anger that boiled within him was eclipsed by the unexpected intrigue that had plagued him. He was amused to find that there was also another person who didn't quite stick to the theme, but he could have sworn that she only stuck to cooler tones ( and it was not about the fact that he had only seen her in her school robes ). She gave off the impression of the full moon, the transcendent orb in the sky that would make its sparse appearance after it had ebbed and waned its stages. Like the moon, Sanguinius didn't see her around much - which was also a mystery in itself. " No, you're all fine. " Snapped out of the stupor, Sanguinius seemed more tame now, like a docile hound that was resting at its keeper's feet. The tension in his posture had softened, and the sharp edges of his bladed demeanor had dulled, as if the pyre raging within him had momentarily calmed. Although, his voice still held the bitter edge he was so acquainted with. " I should have been more aware of the others lingering by the other tables. This whole ball makes me feel like I’m on a treasure hunt and forgot to check my map. It makes me wonder about the kind of interesting characters I might have missed. " " Red's a good color on you. " He frowned, " Your dress, I mean. " |

Pressing her red lips together for a moment, a vague attempt to keep her lipstick even, she began her sweep around the room, pale eyes darting about. She couldn't have expected anything less then for the committee to go all out once again. Despite everything she could have ever said about these school dances, she had to admit the set up was never anything less then impressive every time. Even if, upon closer inspection of the smaller details, she wasn't entirely sure what was happening. Likely details imputed by Muggle-born members. Muggle details always went over her head.
That wasn't going to stop her from at least enjoying the music as she found herself a quiet place, half hidden behind once of the intricate pillars brought in, where such as wallflower as Illowy might plant herself comfortable for the time being. Students were still filtering in and the evening was still young. No reason to get her heckles up... not yet anyway.
I was told I was dangerous. When I asked why, they said, "Because you don't need anyone." That's when I smiled.

When Winnie embraced her boyfriend she wouldn't be greeted with the same warmth she had felt from him in the past. His touch felt cold, alien even. The forced smile she wore was starting to crack, the façade slipping for just a moment before she forced it back into place. Strangle? What the hell was he talking about.
Her grip around him loosened, and she was preparing to take a step back when their eyes locked. Her breath caught in her throat as he begin to inspect her necklace. He knew. She swallowed, her throat as dry as sandpaper, "Okay, you caught me... I... Changed the necklace a bit. I'm sorry if you're upset, I didn't think you'd mind."
The comparison of her as a blushing bride gave her chills, "I thought it would be on theme..." The Ravenclaw glanced down at her dress, suddenly feeling self-conscious. Was this his new way of tormenting her? Making her feel less than?
If only it had been that simple.
Winnie could hear her pulse thudding against her eardrums as her boyfriend drew closer to her. His breath against her ear felt like a poisonous vine weaving around her skin, curling tighter with every whisper. Its hold threatened to choke the the air from her lungs should she consider running.
"Mathias..." She whispered, her voice trembling in a prayer or a plea—she didn’t know which.
He knew. Of course he knew. It was impossible to hide frayed strings from your puppet master.
She couldn't stop her bottom lip from trembling as he confirmed her worst fears, erasing their history with the painful truth. "For how long, Matt? How long have you been—" Her voice cracked, the memories of her once loving boyfriend felt like they were a lifetime away.
"W-Why? Why me? What did I do to you to deserve such cruelty? Do you even care about me or am I just a game to you?" The questions spilled out of her as quickly as her tears. She had prayed she was wrong, had longed to wake up and realize it was all some terrible mistake and Matt was who she thought he was.
Now he stood in front of her with his thinly veiled threats about feeding to hags. How could he even be human?
Her entire body was screaming at her to run from the demented man, but the moment she had realized Matt had mentioned her friends something within her snapped, like a half-buried ember in the ashes that suddenly sparked to life. "We can go back to the old times, Matt. So long as you stay away from my friends. But if you so much as think about harming a single hair on their head, I will destroy myself and drag you to hell with me."
The brief moment of power was intoxicating. Pulling away from the web he had weaved for her felt like sweet relief, but soon she would realize why insects could never escape a spider. She took a moment to straighten out her clothing, her head held high as she reached to take his arm, until...
"... What are you doing?!" She stared in absolute horror as the Slytherin dropped to his knee.
"Winnie Harper, will you marry me."
“I—” For a split second everything around her blurred into nothing. All she could see was him; the malicious gleam in his eyes and the knowing smile playing on his lips. Why here, why now?
Her throat felt tight, and it took all her mental strength to keep her body from trembling. Whenever the ring's stone hit the chandelier light it sparkled mockingly, drawing eyes, attention—too much attention. She could feel the weight of everyone watching, waiting for her response, but the only thing she could think about was the chilling threat woven into Mathias’s every word, every touch. Panic flashed on her features as her eyes quickly scanned the room to find someone, anyone, that could help her. She couldn't see Percival, Eve, Aly, Bex, but she briefly saw Dee before reminding herself she would be putting her in danger if she asked for help.
Her lips parted, but no sound came at first. She couldn't marry him, she couldn't! Her Great Grandmother had warned her of pureblood traditions, but she was a half-blood and... She was only 16 years old for Merlin's sake! Surely her mother wouldn't let her.
Silently, she told herself she would be okay. She had two years to find a way out of this engagement, after all. In reality she could feel the tangled threads squeezing, tightening their white knuckled grip around her.
"... Of course, Mattie. How can I say no?" She couldn't. She would remain as still as a statue if Mathias stepped forward to adorn her finger with the offered ring.
She wanted to cry, wanted to call for her big brother to come save her, but Jack was gone, sent away to Merlin knows where.
She was alone, and she would be Mathias Pride's puppet until her dying day.

┏ ┓ Pericles couldn't recall ever treating a Hogwarts dance as a social gathering. It would be more apt to deem them "training exercises", given the near certainty of calamity. Point in case: he had been stabbed in the face at the last ball, and spent the one before rescuing drowning students from the lake. He didn't attend with dates, he went with meticulously selected combat partners. This time however, his worldview had been rocked to the point that norms deviated in their entirety: @Evelynn Decipio had made the baffling decision to take along a random boy. She wasn't adding him to the team, either, but going as a duo. When the news was broken to both him and @Aly Salinger, Pear had cluelessly questioned if there was some strategic advantage to this. Eve explained she just wanted to know what it was like to go with someone. He didn't want to admit precisely why the development irked him as much as it did. He also didn't want to drive off a friend by pointing out she could have just gone "with" he and Aly again- he wasn't so in denial as to not recognize the difference. Eve wanted an actual date, and so she had outsourced one. Pericles pretended he was fine with that. In fact, out of the desire to understand her mentality, he decided to take a page from her book. He would follow suit.
Eun-ji was the perfect medium between these old and new ideals alike: not only was she a competent caster and healer, she was also a talented dancer and overall exemplary person. They had worked alongside each other at the lake disaster, naturally falling into the roles of rescuers in an impromptu display of teamwork and chemistry. The Hunt family heiress carried herself with a quiet grace which belied an underlying flame. All that said, they weren't necessarily close, a fact Pericles had hoped to change through the most platonic advances possible. When he asked if she would attend with him, he had subtly yet tactfully tacked on "as friends". That was when he learned Eun-ji was in a dilemma of the heart all her own (@Hanako Tone). As shocking as it was to realize they shared an unspoken turmoil, it somehow sweetened the deal. Pericles proposed a plan. They would arrive arm in arm, compatible and conspiratorial, with matching outfits to seal the scheme.
It was pureblood practice to adhere to a theme, yet instead of the usual extravagant costume, Pericles aimed for something simpler this go around. His long dark trench was lined with red to match Eun-ji's dress, practical pockets stitched along the interior to stash several potion vials. It might have belonged to a shady dealer in another life. He carried the tools of a proper detective, with the right pocket containing Extendable Ears while the left hid a locksmith's pocketknife. Clasped in the knot folds of his tie- the same scarlet as his date's lipstick- nestled a Spy Eye Ring. Peri had slicked back his hair to suit the era, though when he got a good look at himself in the mirror, he faced the disturbing realization that this made him look a touch too much like his father. It was mussed back into a relaxed side part before he met Eun-ji in the Ravenclaw common room. Together, they descended to the Great Hall.
Withered flowers, faux obituaries, classified casefiles and the occasional blood splatter. The organizers went above and beyond every time, though the eccentric investigator found himself especially charmed by this ball's ambiance. The blinding fog which came and went was a vague cause for concern, but one he would adjust to (Blindvision). Pericles paused at the entrance, not only to soak it all in, but to give Eun-ji a final chance to change her mind. He turned his good eye her way while giving her arm a soft squeeze of encouragement. She was breathtaking, a sight made all the more bittersweet by the knowledge that neither had been the other's first choice for tonight. "Are you ready...?" His delicate tone and forgiving look seemed to say instead, Are you sure?┗ ┛

SpeechNabi's Dress:
ReducioThe Great Hall 2024.10.19 Interactions: Open Nabi was on her way to the autumn ball, a much awaited event that she had no intention of attending at first. However, all the talk about the ball from her peers made her curious to see what this exciting ball, was all about. Unlike most of the other students in attendence, Nabi did not have a date. Yet that did not bother her in the slightest as she would much rather spend her time alone, looking around the ball than staying awkwardly with some random boy she simply picked out at the last minute.
Her dress is a simple black silk dress, Nabi did not see a point in dressing up if she would be standing in a corner as per usual. She had hoped that the dress did not draw attention to her so she could enjoy her time at the ball. She had done her hair into a simple and neat bun before placing a silver butterfly hairpin to add a bit of something to her. Nabi couldn't help but find it ironic that she, the daughter to fashion designers, chose to wear the most simplest dress she owned.
There she was, standing at the enterence of the Great Hall, glancing around at the decorations. Nabi notices everyone's dresscode and how they all seem to go on theme, she hums in response and makes her way inside. Nabi calmly walks to grab a glass of punch at one of the food tables, she looks at the other choices of food and treats, thinking "goodness what is that?". Her grey eyes narrow as she looks at the label, "TV Dinners? How can such a thing even taste good?". Nabi looks rather unamused by the selection of food before walking further into the ball with her glass of punch, looking for a good place to sit.Abilities: none
