Downhill Broom Sledding
Downhill Broom Sledding ❅ July 19th, 2024 ❅Calling all adrenaline junkies. I repeat CALLING ALL ADRENALINE JUNKIES! Do you want to partake in an Olympic inspired sport, not for the faint of heart? You're in luck. "Downhill Broom Sledding!" The new hottest... er... well, coldest sport on the scene.
After the camp attendees have completed the registry and received tent assignments, they will be able to sign up for the intense downhill sledding multi-school race. Taking inspiration from the Muggle sport of downhill sledding, contestants will have to fly close to the ground, choosing one of three paths in a snaking downhill race. Will you choose correctly with the shortest path or will an avalanche "accidentally" occur, slowing you down?
Magic sleds will be provided to contestants to ensure that everyone has an equal and fair chance of winning. Will you bring pride to your school, or your house if you are at Hogwarts?
To ensure that the event is fair and honest, Tommy Patterson, renowned for his honesty, will be supervising the races. He has meticulously planned the snaking routes for the race that intersect at numerous points to provide those who choose the wrong path an opportunity to choose the correct path. Of course, this also means that if you have chosen the fastest path, you may not be so lucky to choose it again.
Tommy's only parting advice for contestants is as follows: "Find your inner-seer and choose the path your heart leads you to".
Please sign up for this event by posting your first RP by JULY 20.
The event will begin, OOC, on JULY 20 and end on AUGUST 4. Moderation will occur every SUNDAY.
Please ensure that you have posted between each round of the downhill race or you will automatically be put into the path with the worse outcome.
The event takes place, IC, on JULY 19.
To sign up for the event, please post your first RP (200 words minimum) of you getting your sled from THE Tommy Patterson, reaching the summit of the mountain, and your choice of one of three paths:
A) The steep and narrow slope,
B) The windy but wide path,
C) The forest full of trees.
Reducio❅ IC & OOC Information ❅
---- IC: During the duration of the 2024 summer camp, Slytherin's renowned seer, Tommy Patterson, will be supervising the downhill broom sledding race for summer camp. Of course, this will result in him sabotaging some paths (randomly decided by Tatsu) as "accidents happen". There is a minimum requirement of 200 per broom sledding post.
---- OOC: Downhill Broom Sledding is a moderated event. While all IC school rules apply during summer camp, participants will be faced with three routes described at the start of the event. Positions for the event will be determined by rolling a flat d20 and the bonus of path choice. Tatsu will at random decide which of these paths is the correct choice (+5 on your roll), neutral (+0 on your roll) and the slowest choice (-5 on your roll, this is the sabotaged route). At the end of three rounds, final positions of the race will be determined by the descending order of total points from highest to lowest.
All standard website rules apply. For any questions or concerns, please owl @Tommy Patterson .

Downhill Broom Sledding
Still not fully understanding how snow and ice in summer made any sense, she felt like perhaps wizards and witches suffered from a thus far unknown reverse-Olaf syndrome. Why would anyone wish to replace summer with winter? Weren't British summers dreadful clammy enough already and so short that making them freezing was just an insult to nature's insult towards Britain? Oogie crunched her teeth together as she stomped through the snow with a "sled" or rather a broom in tow; it was some kind of bright, ugly pink bow around some bristles and Oonagh kind of loved it for its ugliness. Perhaps there was something poetic about that, was she using that expression right? Whatever, anyone who dared tell her otherwise would catch some fists.
But despite her disregard towards wizards and their hate of summer, she was thrilled to hear they organized a sled race. She would crush this, and perhaps some other fellow students. She had to make a good impression before school started after all and how to better do that than giving some of the students a VIP trip to the nurse? With those happier thoughts in mind, she found herself grinning almost maliciously as she reached the top of the mountain and after taking a run-up (as she never was one to give half effort) she launched herself down the course and down the steep and narrow slope. Where was the fun in taking an easy route? She wanted adventure!

“Quem não arrisca não petisca.”
—Brazilian proverb
("Those who don't risk don't snack/eat")
If one could only use a single word to describe Manu Macedo, perhaps they should have chosen "competitive". The duellist from Castelobruxo enjoyed nothing more than winning, except perhaps seeing her cruelest of enemies beaten down; she was naught if not fair and for justice. The sixteen-year-old, then, was relieved to arrive at the sledding event to find broomstick sleds for everyone that claimed to be equal for all - she did not own a broomstick, being a duellist for her school instead of a player for racing, Quodpot, or Quidditch. She had not really much ridden a broomstick, nor a sled, but truly, how hard could it be? After all, children made broom-sport teams at schools all the time. Sledding was a popular pastime for children in many countries that saw snow, albeit not in Manu's, for obvious reasons. Surely she could take on a few eleven-year-olds on a sled and come out victorious, with a wholly deserved and earned win under her belt.
At this point, she could use a win.
Taking one of the sleds for herself, Manuela set off on the course with a mighty kick of her boots in the snow; she was lucky, after all, that she had packed a warmer track-suit, having intended for those to be her pajamas in the colder nights after wearing her most typical clothings for sun and sand and beach all day. Instead, the situations had turned on their heads - cold during the day before allowing to retire to her sandy, hot tent at nights - and now Manu had taken to wearing what few warm clothes she had during the activities in which she had to leave the tent, instead. Still, she shivered with the snow whipping by as the girl from Brazil eyed the three paths ahead of her: one that looked far too steep to attempt without crashing, a second that appeared to have few obstacles if only a little breeze, and a third with all sorts of trees blocking her path. The decision was easy, and Manu steered her sled towards the center path, chuckling at the children surrounding her who seemed to be gravitating towards the other two. She was sixteen, after all. Manu could handle a little bit of wind.

Colby was sure that everyone was going to catch a cold one way or another from all the back and forth between a winter chill and summer heat. From the feast being snowy to the bonfire being hot as heck, there was way too much weather change. Colby felt lucky that she wasn't even showing signs of a cold just yet. While, sure, magic can heal all, a person still had to feel the symptoms before getting fully healed, and that was always annoying.
Understanding that this was a "sledding" activity, Colby dressed with one of her few pairs of jeans, a short-sleeved orange shirt and the scarf and hat that she had stolen from the feast around her neck and on her head. Her outfit would have been confusing to anyone without context of what was going on with this summer camp's theme.
Colby had made a point to sign up for all activities and this one was one of the few that she was excited for. Never had she participated in a race of any kind. Well, other than racing her brother to nearby destinations. And often she would win as she was four years older than him. But this time, there were people either her age or older. So there had to be some kind of competition for her to witness.
Making it at the top of the mountain, there were a butt load of sleds ready for students to take. She saw that there were already some of her peers at the ready. They seemed to be in different starting lines though. Colby ready the directions and saw that she had to pick one of three directions: a trail of trees, a narrow and steep path, and wide and windy path. Which was the correct one?
Definitely not the trees, she thought to herself. It was stupid to go through a path that had so many obstacles such as trees. So now it was between the windy path or the steep one. Steep seemed a lot more fun than windy. Colby brought her sled over to the starting line for the steep and narrow path. This felt right.
As she readied herself, she saw someone next to her that seemed ready for their choice as well. "Get ready to lose," she said with a smirk before heading down around the same time as them.
ACTION: Choosing the steep and narrow slope.

Rachel's heart pounded with excitement as she approached the registration table. She had never been sledding before, and the idea of adding magic to the mix only made her more excited and nervous that she would land on her face. Her nerves melted into excitement as she watched other students get their sled and take off down the hill on one of the three paths. Her blue eyes sparked with enthusiasm as she approached the front of the line to receive her sled.
As she gripped the sled, she felt the cool metal under her fingertips. She took a deep breath as she made her way to the three paths that seemed to twist and turn like a labyrinth, each offering its own unique set of challenges. While she was in line, Rachel couldn't help but notice an older girl who had just taken a sled with a determined look. the competitive glint in her eyes was unmistakable. Watching her, Rachel felt a combination of awe and curiosity. It was clear that the girl was determined to prove something.
Rachel returned her attending to the sled that she gripped and felt a rush of determination. She was still new to magic, and wasn't even entirely sure how the sled worked. She hadn't even had a chance to step foot in Hogwarts yet. Her parents immediately signed her up for this camp when they received notice via Owl. They felt like it would be good for her to make friends before boarding the Hogwarts Express in September.
She looked up right when the older girl took off down the center path. Rachel's nerves dissolved completely as she saw the joy on the other students faces as they too went down their own path on their sled. Without a second thought, she decided to follow the older girl's lead. The center path seemed less intimidating that the steep slope and less perilous than the forest. It was the perfect balance of challenge and fun.
"This is it," she murmured to herself, her heart racing. With determination in her eyes, Rachel positioned herself on the sled, ready to embrace the thrill of the race. The wind whipped through her hair as she launched herself down the path, a wide grin spreading across her face. She was ready to make memories she would never forget.

Summer camp so far may not have been very summery, but for Cass that didn't take any of the joy out of it. Swinter camp was such a great (if a little strange) idea! The ice skating at the opening feast had been amazing, and now they got to broom race! Or... close to it. Broom racing on sleds. Which was still awesome! They were going to beat everyone by taking the fastest route no matter what. This race was theirs already in their mind. Never mind the fact that they had never touched a sled before. How complicated could it be? You just pushed it and then hopped on. No need for steering. Probably.
They shivered a little. Perhaps shorts weren't the best idea. They had certainly packed more than enough clothes for every season and then some, but today they had decided they felt like shorts and a t-shirt. In the snow. Which was currently very cold and very wet on their feet, since they hadn't brought shoes either. Nothing they could do about it now, as the race was about to start. Three routes emerged into view as they took off, somehow managing to find every bump and rock on the ground. The first looked like the place for going fast (and also the place for a serious-injury causing fall) so without much thought to the others they manoeuvred their sled over there. Or tried to, at least. They leaned their body as far off the sled as they could in the opposite direction, causing them to almost miss the turn entirely.
A few other students had also chosen the no-risk-no-reward route, and Cass spotted a firstie with hair almost as wild as theirs. They attempted to wave to their new competitor and almost fell off their sled. Whoops. A voice from behind made them turn and look over their shoulder. It was another firstie! These children were everywhere. They may not be much older themself, but they would take whatever they would get. Like finally being taller than someone, anyone who wasn't a part-goblin. She was talking to the girl they had just waved to, but Cass was nothing if not challenge ready. "I think you might be taking your own advice soon" they replied to her. This time they didn't almost fall off their sled, which was a win in their books.

━━━━━━━━━ ⋆ ‧ ❀ ‧ ⋆ ━━━━━━━━━When she woke up this morning, Ruby was feeling excited and a little scared too, to be honest. She saw in the camp itinerary that today there would be a downhill broom sledding competition. She had always been a rather shy and hadn’t participated in such events. But she had made up her mind that this summer things were going to change. She told herself she was going to explore and push her own boundaries. It was time to have some real fun. So today, she was going to participate, no matter how scary it looked at first.
She made her way to the hill where the competition would be held. She saw other contestants walk before her, but no one she knew. As she reached the top, she saw a boy standing there. She estimated he was around the same age as here. He was handing out magic sleds to the contestants. Ruby approached him and took one of the sleds from him. She smiled at him and turned towards the start of the race.
She took her place in the starting area, looking at the others that were waiting for the start of the race. There were three paths to choose from. The first path was a narrow passage to take. That could become a problem when a lot of people would chose that path. The next one was a wide but windy path. It had a lot of room to pass, but she didn’t have a good feeling with that one. It felt almost too easy. The third path was through the forest, and the path must be searched between the trees. It was a bit of a guess which path to take. The third path wouldn’t certainly be the easiest, but for her it felt like a safe choice. She took her starting position and chose the forest full of trees.

Roloelaying as Hans Jenssen, speaking in accented (German, noticeable but does not affect understanding) English
As a half-blood, Hans was supposed to know about the clashing of two worlds- clashing, and possible co-existence, compromission, and hopefully cooperation. However, the world only surprised him with the sport as ridiculous as broom sledding. Still, Hans was not your usual half-blood child, having been raised almost entirely on an entree of muggle living with a side dish of magic prepared by Opa1. In addition to not being in a true position to complain about the sport, such things did not particularly concern him and as an “adrenaline junkie”, if you will, he would enter anything that got his blood racing far too fast for his brain.
Therefore, naturally, as the race had started and choices were presented, the Jenssen child chose the most perilous looking route, hitting the ground at a treacherous angle with barely enough space at the sides. Suicidal, maybe (though probably not), but thrilling? Definitely. The sole path made the whole race worth anyone’s time. Grinning as the wind whistled in his hair, running through it and tousling his locks, memories of Durmstrang flights surfaced and submerged, bouncing in rhythm to his pounding heart and the ridges underneath him. As a girl, obviously younger than him, though it couldn’t be by much, with unruly curly blonde hair that flew around her, courtesy of the drafts, appeared in his vision, Hans neared her and shouted above the gales, ‘Hey, let’s move it slow poke!’

Of course, even if it hadn't been Tommy's event, Astra would have chosen to participate. After all, she was a total adrenaline junkie and if the sheer rush from practically skeleton-ing down a mountain on a simple sled, plus the threat of avalanche or whatever, wasn't enough to give her a much needed high then nothing here was.
She took her sled and began the trek up the mountain with a lightness in her steps that hadn't been present for quite some time. This would be good for her, very good, just a simple race, a simple event, something fun and mildly dangerous and refreshing for her worn out mind that was trying to push itself to the limit.
When did Astra learn self-care? Must be character development or something. The real life version, of course.
Astra's eyes swept over the other competitors as she started to choose a track, most young, around her age, and one older teenager. She saw her tent mate, the first-year-to-be Oonagh, and a wicked grin curled across her face.
Quick running steps turned into leaps as Astra shot toward Oonagh and launched herself onto the steep and narrow trail ahead of the girl, flinging a rooster tail of snow into her face. Crowing laughter followed her swift headfirst descent across the snow.
