Hexwizard Task 1: Beauxbatons v Durmstrang

Yefim Rumyantsev (@Flash Holmwood) as usual when in Hogwarts, did not understand most of what was being said. he had done enough study in preparation for this task to expect the early exchange between Queens. It was the moments after that would become muddled and he would have to think about what would be done. As confident as he was, Beauxbatons was a powerful school that could be able to make more than a 'good' showing here. Durmstrang would have to crush them early on or regret the lost opportunity.

They were already getting hurt.

Mik was dangerously close. — Он еще не спустится. "He's not going down just yet." Felix (@Winnie Harper) assured their Yefim but they both would have to live with the suffering Mikael had and was still about to endure. «Вечеринка только началась. Не делай ничего резкого, Йеф, я не могу забрать тебя в этом чертовом платье». "The party has just begun. Don't do anything drastic, Yef; I can't pick you up wearing this damn gown." Well, perhaps if he stayed near enough to Valentin, his Kingly aura was empowering them beyond their normal limits.

Valentin Schnell (@Aida Mòrsgor-Ama Ellwood) was the one that they would gather around. There was something comforting and empowering about this revelation surely. Power would pulse from the royal crown and those around him seemed a bit sturdier... a bit stronger than they had in the past. A strange feeling. A good one. this power and this unity. “TO VICTORY!” cried the white king

Yes, to victory, but at what cost? Cielle Johansen (@Ivy Bellamy) and Margarethe Fransson (@Evelynn Decipio) would look over at Mik who had taken the brunt of the first round. — Мик, ты в порядке? "Mik, are you ok?" the te of them would say almost simultaneously. No, he really was not but would pride allow him to be honest? Mikael Halldorson (@Percival Rainwood) had no words for them. A man of few words, just action. He would let a grunt escape his lips. He was no quitter.

«Мик, ты блестящий кусок работы, я понял!» “Mik, you shiny piece of work you, I’ve gotcha!” Johannes Saver (@Astrea Soleil Neptune) would declare as they endowed Mik with a boon. Something that would keep him on his feet just a little bit longer.

"Niffy ! Je ne vais pas les laisser te faire du mal !" "Niffy! I'm not going to let them hurt you!" Greta declared. Well, Lysander Stavrou (@Phaedra Stavrou) was more likely the protector here, his bulky (comparatively) body and his years of honed endurance would finally be displayed before the world. He would prove himself to everyone on this day.

Not everyone was worried about Mik's dance with death. Amina Petrovic (@Ileen Knight) was more entertained than concerned. — Ты попала, девочка! "You got it, girl!” She would shout to their grumpy Queen. "Это потрясающе!" "This is amazing!” She gushed, although if she was speaking to anyone besides her teammates and Romeo, they would not likely understand her. Erin did not know a bit of Russian.

When Mik got pummeled, her worry was not for thee battered teen. No, he was not... well, whatever it is about misery that girls love in men. «Не смотри на меня так! Я не вздрогнул. Он и так в порядке!» "Don’t look at me like that! I didn’t flinch. He is fine anyway!” She ranted at a random person and then focused back on the game, ignoring the fact that she forgot to switch to english. «У тебя получилось! Покажи им, как это делается!» "You got this! Show them how it’s done!" if she was speaking to Erin, she would stare at the girl blankly.

« Royaume des fées ? » “Fairy kingdom?” Andre Alarie (@Alec Mason) questioned, raising an eyebrow. Maximilian would remark that it was as if they were like people from the middle ages. Weren't they always as wizards in about that era? Slowly Andre nodded. "Oui." “Yes.” "Ne tombe pas." “Don't fall off.”

Cassie McGregor-Martin (@Lucia Fox) was familiar enough with chess that she knew how and where she could move and the horse was exceedingly compliant. It was as if she had been riding this horse for years, its frightful nature more aesthetic than literal in her brief experience. Strange. She would note thee chariot at her side driven by Florian, "You ever ridden a chariot before?"

It would surely not go as well. There should have been a disclaimer warning spectators and players alike -- kids do not try this at home. Alas, that is a domestic issue, not one for champions to worry about.

Amaury Favreau (@Cecily Quinn) had already proven Beauxbatons to be a formidable force. Showing his hand so early might be what it took to demoralize them. Or... put a large target on his back...

Milo Durand (@Delilah Stewart) would quickly learn that this was a lot more complicated than a game of simple chess. It was impossible to know who had the upper hand. The crowds would cheer and neither side would be certain just yet who had the advantage if anyone.

Roberta Martin (@Sylvain Wyllt) would cease antagonizing the other team long enough to encourage her comrades. She had a job to do here, and as fun as it was to frustrate the men across the board she needed to actually wipe the floor with them. "Garde la tête haute ! On verra ça jusqu'au bout !" "Keep your chin up! We'll see this through to the end!"

Seeing their wrath, Roberta was determined to give Durmstrang a reason to feel the dire trepidation she had once felt. To endow them with the carnal knowledge that she would not be standing idly, they would never sever her friends from her protection.

Maximilien de Fostoncy (@Lindsey Springhall) was a dark knight. His exterior was terrifying but he would see himself as a dutiful and gallant knight. and perhaps a few girls in the stands would swoon. The board was chaotic. Maxi’s fingers skimmed over his horse’s pure black mane. "Ne me décevez pas" “Don’t fail me” he would whisper into the beast's mane.

Cassanora Browne (@Hugh Lowe) was studying the board and the movements. She was quieter than the rest, assessing and attempting to make the best use of her movements as well as the movements and ultimately the sacrifices of her team. yes, there was going to be losses and there was going to be pain. Also the regret and the remorse that would rise from determining who.

The Kings

Hide Away: The King must save himself, he hides behind an adjacent allied piece and takes half damage (the piece they are hiding behind also takes half damage). Damage is not healing or buffs, it is just damage. Evasion here would be a separate roll for both the King (for their half) and the piece that they are hiding behind. This action occurs during the action phase which is before the movement phase, but has priority (meaning it happens before attacks, so an attack may not be possible or may be redirected towards another piece that is now "in the way.") The space is chosen by the King and must be adjacent to an allied piece. If the space is occupied, there would be a contested strength check to determine who will remain in this space unless the adjacent piece is an ally in which case a contested check is not needed. This is action can be done in addition to the movement phase.

King Valentin was not going to risk ruining his fancy garments, they really suited him. He would move to his chosen defender, Johannes. The boy might have thwarted his needling of the loud blonde that Yefim seemed so oddly enamored by. Yet the boy was if nothing else, durable.

Cassanora had the same thought as she took refuge behind one of her black knights, Maximilien. The hindquarters of the horse were no place for a lady, but she would be kept 'safe' from the wrath of her opposition she would hope.

The Queens

Mistress' (or Master's) Wrath: A ranged attack that can go in any direction the Queen can move. It cannot move through allied/enemy squares. A blast of arcane energy can be felt across the board. Arcane Power x 50. However, this attack is done at disadvantage and can only target 1 target.

Rapid Defense: They defend another allied piece as their primary action. This action takes place before the movement phase and takes priority in the action phase over attacks made against a specified piece. Similar to defending in Quidditch where a user blocks an oncoming attack made by a specific target, attacks made against this piece would be relegated to this piece (regardless of the direction of attack). If another piece attempts to land in the space that the defender chose (a specific, declared space adjacent to the chosen target), a strength check is rolled. This piece has advantage on this roll. This action does not consume the pieces movement for the round, they can still move, but their movement is considered to be the last movement in the round according to the action stack.

These ladies were not to be messed with. Billowing ballgowns and massive crowns only set the scene. The men behind these outfits were far from dainty ladies and they were about the show the world that in a bloody exchange.

Amaury would go for Mikael, he had already taken plenty of damage in the first round, they might be able to take him out with a decisive blow. So their scepter would be raised and a dark energy would escape from the gem on the head.

Amaury targets Mikael with Master's Wrath.

Mikael performs Rapid Defense on Greta.

The board would shake with murderous intent, had Mikael stayed there he would have been felled by Amaury's brutal killing blow. However when the smoke cleared, the astonished crowd would see nothing in Mikael's former square. He had moved with blinding speed over to Greta, saving his hide in the process.

In the space immediately behind Mikael stood Felix, unblemished. Queen Felix was not about to take this dignity sitting down. Nobody in this board was going to live to tell the tale of the day they fought this dude in a dress. First, he was going to take out his rival queen. It was true, she was the most powerful piece on the board and without the Queen live, their team would be in shambles.

Had Mikael still been standing there, this attack would not have been possible but due to his rapid movement (before the attack phase) Felix had a rare opening and he would take it.

Unfortunately Felix would miss. The incredible frustration likely not unlike Yefim's unwillingness to make out with him beneath the stands. He attack would zip over the opposing Queen's shoulder and disperse harmlessly into nothing.

Rooks

Both Mikael and Lysander would immediately blitz for heir allies. Mikael rushing in front of little Greta and Lysander in front of Felix. Their chariots would clank and rattle in protest as they skid to stops. Neither would block their allies intended attacks in a unified series of shots at the Beauxbaton Team.

Milo would move in defense of his King, also their champion Cassanora Browne. He would perhaps feel powerful diving that horse and bounding to a stop in front of the small girl for whom his body would defend. Florian LeRoy (Rook) would defend he other Cassie with Rapid Defense. They were playing a defensive game it would seem at the start of this match. One could only hope that the choice ultimately does them well.

Bishops

Intercession: Using their Wisdom, they are able to shield a single target against an attack. The shielded target must be adjacent. They would protect the target for Wisdom x 10. This would take priority over any other attacks done. Remains on a target until it is exhausted. Can be maintained on more than one target. Does not stack.

Invocation: Capable of blasting a target at a distance. This can move through allied (but not enemy) spaces on a diagonal. Arcane Power x 25.

Johannes would continue to buff his team. With Felix, their Queen and one of their most powerful pieces, they would need to last as long as possible. It was likely that Felix was going to be a target in the coming minutes. So a dark gift of life and endurance was granted as Felix's boon. He was in a good spot there, near their allies and capable of eternally buffing them. The only issue: the fact that a good spell spread could wipe them out.

Roberta Martin and Andre Alarie both would perform Intercession near simultaneously on both Florian LeRoy and Milo Durand (Rook). Selfless defenders, they were about to sacrifice their bodies for the sake of their team. A fate none should envy because it was likely that their flesh would fail them and that they would ultimately fail and fall. That they would not rest easily, and that when they failed it would not be just them that suffered. But they could perhaps last a little bit longer...

The only issue -- Florian rushed off before Roberta was able to give her blessing. Dang men, always running off. This rapid movement did result in a beneficial chaos as little Greta was targeting him.

There was only one Bishop that would be hellbent on destruction, little Greta. She was the darling of the team and perhaps secretly quite violent. The little girl would not place a shield on an allied target, but rather she would blast one of the enemy Beauxbaton students. No, not one... two, the girl had spellspread.

As capable as the girl was in spite of her diminutive size, there was too much against her. Between the chaos of the board, the cheering crowd, the distracting presence (be it for their beauty or the fearsome aura) of her opposition she would miss Florian as he rushed away from her and fumble against Roberta. She still had one of the Durmstrang Boys to protect her, the smallest Horntail.

Knights

Eagle Eye: Capable of targeting someone either on the diagonal or in a straight line up to 3 squares. Cannot target through enemy or allied squares. 50 x Stamina.

Crippling Blow: The Knight disables a single adjacent enemy piece, using accuracy v evasion if successful the target piece cannot physically move from where it is for 3 full rounds, including the round of attack (movement happens after attacks in the stack with rare exception and if that exception applies then this attack is auto-avoided).

Yefim, the Durmstrang champion was not hiding behind his allies. Not yet in any case. The White Knight would have a strange glint in his eye as he cast Eagle Eye on Florian. The spell was being used by another board and the effect was one could say... dissimilar.

It was mind-numbing dribble that would fill the boy's head, leaving him in a mind numbing daze. he was still conscious and aware, but a bit of his mind had partially melted. Cielle was also eyeing the competition and they would find their target in Cassie. The spell, unlike the one cast by the dark knights would attempt to fill their enemy's conscious mind with mind numbing, irksome presences -- somewhat like a mind on a reality TV binge with the wizarding equivalent to the Kardashians coming to mind. Perhaps it was crueler than the nightmarescape their opposition was attempting to thrust them into.

The girl's brain would be muddled with memes. it was nothing to shed a tear over, but her mind and her wits would grow dull. It was not nearly as dramatic as the nightmares the dark opposition was subjecting them to. A pounding headache all the same, they would feel exhausted and drained by people and experiences they experienced.

Cassie would take her opportunity and attempt to cripple Mikael. The boy had taken some damage and this was the best time to strike. the rolls were for naught as the boy had performed a rapid defense, leaving nothing in his wake as he slid next to Greta in the back of the collection.

Maximilien almost had them. Lysander was not prepared for the nightmare that would overcome their mind. This would have been a rare moment in fact as the Durmstrang student was generally successful and intimidating. However, luck was on Lysander's side, as he blinked in cadence with the evil glare that would come from Maxi.

Florian would make an audacious move and attempt to unseat Lysander, a boy significantly larger than he. An A for effort at the very least, he would not budge the boy.

The pieces movd on the board, and more attacks would fly from all angles. Yefim was not well known for his intellect or his perceptiveness, but that was not the only skills of a leader and tactician. What Yefim excelled most in was determination and practice, and he imparted everything he taught himself about this game to his team. He had gone to the pregame, and seen exactly what was possible with each piece, things that weren't immidately intuitive and got more complicated the more it was understood. The Beauxbatons team had, as it turned out, come less prepared. Perhaps to be expected with the change of champion over summer. What it meant for this round though, was that they underestimated his rooks.

When the deadly queen tried to finish off his precious Misha, it was already too late, and the devestating spell fizzled on the floor as a warning. There was definitely no chance Mik could have survived another attack like the first, but he didn't have to. Instead, he and Liza were gone by the time the Beauxbatons pieces tried to squash them. Such speed required their entire action, meaning they could not attack, but by the end of round two, the Horntail Horde had at least got some damage on the enemy team. It was a shame that so many of their attacks missed, but it was to be expected. Evasion was Beauxbatons' forte, and no matter how strong Yefim's horde was, it would mean nothing if their attacks didn't land.

[”Next time we train, we have to work on your aim.”] Given that Mik was still alive and none of them got hurt that round, he hoped this playful jab would lift up Felya's spirits, or even better, stoke his competitive need to prove himself before falling into panic. Yefim's plan put Felya in the hot seat, queen versus queen, except one of the queens was barely a teenager, and the other was almost a young adult. He didn't expect the same kind of teasing to work on Gresha though, for whom he would impart different encouragement. [”Focus your mind, fishlet. Steady yourself.”]

While the battle was underway and the chaos ensued, Yefim would be in his element. He did not fear complications and danger, he believed in fate and his team's skill. The throes of battle were a comfort, a place he could finally release his pent up energy. He would still be able to hear the siren call of Erin from the bench nearby, imploring him to kick Roberta. Of course, kicking itself was not a possible move, but he would smile and raise his lance regardless.

”You got it!” He would say, in passable English.

Felix would shout various four letter words in all three of his languages when his attack sailed by the French Queen. What a slippery little weasel he was, it was starting to get on his nerves. It didn’t help that some little twerp behind him was heckling him. Brick wall face and the guy he assumed was his boyfriend. He turned to flip the duo the bird, his teeth grinding together.

Then there was that comment from Yef, which caused his cheeks to burn. Fuck, this was so damn embarrassing. “Trust me, it would be my pleasure to ruin that pretty face.”

Now fucking LYSANDER was standing near his personal bubble. “Come on. You really gonna protect my ass?” How could he trust a guy who liked ARJAN?

“Don’t worry about me, little Neuntöter (German: Shrike)! I’m tough!” called Valentin after Greta. She had always been dear to him, and now she was a darling of the entire team, so of course he was more concerned about her taking too much fire herself. “Focus on giving them hell.” Valentin squeezed his scepter with a flood of pain into his sprained wrist and surged magic into the aura around him. The dazzling swagger stick pulsated with light, but its purpose was not simply to look cool. He needed to feed power into everyone he could reach.

The pain in his hand made Val look at Mikael next, as if they were somehow connected. “Misha, don’t you let them take you down. Fima is counting on you.” Eyes stinging a bit with weariness, Valentin took a deep breath and continued. “I know you can do this. This isn’t nearly the worst spot we’ve been in before.” Finally words of encouragement came pouring from him. It was as if a dam was beginning to crack under the flood of spring snowmelt. “We’re gonna make you proud, Fima!”

The eyes of the world were upon them, but what did it mean to Valentin? The ones he wanted to make proud were already all around him.

Amaury's second blast of power flew harmlessly past his opponents as his target weaseled away at the last moment, off to fulfill his role elsewhere. Meanwhile, his own teammates shifted around the board, a mix of defensive and offensive maneuvers causing chaos on both sides. Even as Amaury easily dodged an attack headed his way, Florian and Cassie both took blows from the black Knights, but still stood tall. It would take more than that to knock Beauxbatons off their feet.

Next round was up. This time the team took a beating. Florian and Cassie were both tough and still standing, but still Cassanora would have held her breath as she witnessed both of them taking hits. The game was brutal and a perfect outlet for brazen teens with anger issues. Tenez-vous debout, mes amis!" "Stand tall, my friends!" Did she earn the privilege of considering them friends? Well, whatever the answer proved to be, surviving this fight alone should cover the groundwork for a lasting bond.

"Cassie, tu vas bien? Et toi, Florian?" "Cassie, are you well? What about you, Florian?" She would ask briefly, checking in with both of the wounded. Outside the tournament, she would have rushed to their aid. But Cass was now, same as the others, constricted to the rules of the game. Each one of them had to find their own strength within themselves, and push themselves beyond the easily achievable. Whether she received confirmation from either of the addressed, it would not matter. There was no time to waste, as the board would soon begin to move once more.

It was all moving considerably fast. But Beauxbatons would need to keep up the pace if they wished to pull themselves through this race to the top.

Once again Florian was relegated to being on the defensive, but he knew this was going to be the case when he was selected to be a rook. However, it wasn't his defense of Cassie that had him struck, but simply being in the line of fire. Florian cursed under his breath at the direct hit, wishing he could have dodged better. It was no matter, he would be okay.

His champion would if he was well, and he would nod and say, "Yes, as well as one can be." He would push through this, he had certainly felt the same, if not worse, due to Broom Racing. Quidditch still had yet to compare in his mind.

Closing his eyes Andre took a deep breath in and let a deep breath out. His eyes quickly scanned over the board at the moves thus far, assessing their situation. They weren't in a bad place, but currently they weren't in a place where he would have preferred them to be either. Though they had just started the game, every move counts.

Cielle would smile sweetly with satisfaction when her spell hit its target. It was clear as anything that Beauxbatons were very evasive, and Cielle's direct hit had given her confidence. The Norwegian fidgeted with her armour, knowing that the heaviness would probably end up giving her a backache or something like that later on.

It wasn’t a lie, really, to say that Maxi was superior in noticing intriguing things in life. With the corner of his eye he could notice an owl swooping in and landing on the audience seats, before transforming into a human being. The process was…not as graceful as on the first day he’d see her, but the thing itself was already impressive enough. And to be sure this was no other than the charming @Aurelia Notresvace, who bonded with him during summer camp. Their story was a little complicated (at least from Maxi’s side), though he indeed liked this elder Gryffindor girl. It’s always good to know that there’s someone you know watching you and hopefully supporting in the stands, wasn’t it? Half-grinning, Maxi prepared himself ready for his next move.

He was almost there, Stavrou in sight and attack prepared. The big Durmstrang guy might seem scary, though Maxi didn’t think Stavrou’d even notice his intention if he could do this stealthily. He had full confidence in his own accuracy if his heavy armours wouldn’t fail him and make that cling-cling sound. Here he went…right in Stavrou’s direction. But still. Luck was on the Durmstrang’s side, who didn’t seem at all affected.

That was quite disappointing, really, as he thought he could as well give the Durmstrangs a blow like what they did to poor Florian and Cassie. His teammates were still standing still, but…don’t the Durmstrangs dare that again.
