Sprawling across the great mountains that towered over Tenūsa lay the most magical structures the isle had to offer. They were not just mere feats against gravity and physics but symbolic of the ever growing understanding of the island folk. They knew that tradition was important, and they would never forget, but acknowledging and respecting the past does not require binding yourself to it. No the Isle and its inhabitants were always looking to grow, to thrive. So while many of the older structures still sprawled across the jungle floor, these marvels carved into rock and crossed the expanses of the sky while never taking away from the natural beauty of the place.

One would think up so high that roots could not reach, that the rot that was beginning to engulf the jungle floor would be a distant problem. Such beliefs would be quickly realised as foolish. Everything in this island was connected. Being made out of magic itself many believed the island to be alive in a sense, and as such each and every part of it was one and the same. Much like a body, the infection could spread no matter the initial cut. This disease that was claiming the ancient haven seemed to be intelligent enough to use that magic, to guide it to where it wished to be. To guide it to the creatures it wished to take, and as such from the draping vines and tunnelled pockets their inky ichor appeared ready to strike.[

One would think that with the overwhelming prowess and magical talent comprised within this room that they would be safe from any wondering foes. But that was exactly what the entity wanted them to think. Roll: 1 The writhing mass of black inky vines did not burrow its way in, did not cause any sound to shatter through the walls but slunk like snakes silent, predatory. It did not choose to cause alarm until it had taken its time to ensure it would succeed. Such sentience was alarming to say the least but the alarm would come all too late for these unsuspecting few. As the dark strands covered across their bodies they did not begin to tighten until each of them was at least partially covered. Then it began to constrict and bind, shocking the group awake they would find themselves unable to move anything below the hip completely trapped under the coagulating tendrils. They were not trapped yet, but if they did not act quickly, it was only a matter of time.
Moderation Note: All of you are considered restrained. You cannot move your lower body without succeeding a strength save or attempting another way.

In all honesty, Azzure didn’t have a true reason to come to the Tenusa homestead. But when it came up in conversation, she couldn't help but feel like it would be a nice change of pace from the overwhelming city.

Azzure liked thinking optimistically. She didn't find that obsessing over negative what-if's had done her any good. The moment she reconciled with Violence her whole outlook on the world changed to be more... bright.

So when she heard who she'll be roommates with she was overjoyed that she knew most of the people on the list. And the addition of a new person was exiting, in many cases, this was a personal assessment of how much her people skills have changed since the start of the holidays.

The moment she came to Tenusa the humid air hit her like a truck. The rainforest reminded her of the sea by her house in Wales. And although Azzure never physically been to the beach or the ocean for that matter. The smell of humidity was a nice break from the cold wetnessof London and Paris.

It felt like a detox. Something to bring her back to reality.

Night fell fast over the mountains of Tenusa. And in no time, Azzure found herself on the balcony, draping her hands open the railing as she watched the fireflies dance around in the sky— backdropped by the bright shine of stars, clear as the day without city smog getting in the way.

From the position of the high houses she could practically see the whole world. Although the night covered most of the land in darkness, it felt nice knowing that the air was fresh, and the only eavesdroppers in sight were the bugs eating the foliage.

The albino was so deeply entranced by the peacefulness she could swear that she’d be able to settle down here in the future, away from the expectations of being an heir or the talk and chatter of everyday life.

Azzure yawned, sleep catching up to her. A part of her didn't want to go inside just yet. She wanted to stay and stargaze just a little longer. But it was was undeniable that she could barely keep her eyes open.

Azzure forced herself out of her slump despite her whole body protesting. But when she turned to move, a slimy tendril wrapped around her leg, making Azzure trip and fall on her knees, the impact reverberating through her bones.

“The fuck?” The black tendrils climbed up her body till they engulfed her lower half, stopping her from getting up. Then she saw them worm their way inside the house and immediately something in Azzure snapped. Her confusion gave way to the sharp knife of concern and protectiveness for her friends.

“Wake up! Something's wrong” Azzure shouted as she tried to pry the vines away from her body only for them to tighten even more, causing her upper body to fall forward hunching over the floor as she could do nothing but watch as the vines spread inside the house, searching for her friends. But for as long as her upper body wasn't paralyzed, she'd continue to claw at the vines, she wasn't about to pass up on the action by being outside the damn house.

She had to get to Violence.

Azzure looked around to the other high houses near them, trying to find someone who is able to help. But the same black vines climbed up the barks of their trees, ensnaring them as well.

“What the hell is happening?”

Mahlioz had stopped really doing important magical events a while ago. She had more important things to do, and especially, she valued her life. She knew enough about Hogwarts balls, and though visiting other schools did sound rather interesting, the last trip had been all about valentine's day, and staying at Hogwarts peacefully without all the loveoholics sounded too perfect to resist. This time, however, Ara had somehow managed to rope them into coming to Tenūsa with some friends of hers, and because Mahlioz could never say no to their friends for some reason, here they were.

It was going to be fine, they'd thought. It would all work out. This was their first time outside of Europe, which was rather insane to them, but it would be a learning opportunity. They were excited. Best of all, they were convinced they had made it far, far away from the curse they were convinced inhabited Hogwarts. Perhaps this magical school's event would go smoothly. Perhaps none of them would die.

The first few hours had actually been alright. Mahlioz had not been ready for the heat and humidity, but the magnificence of the jungle - colors, plants, sounds - very much made up for it. She did, somewhere in the back of her mind, register that she would probably get overstimulated if she was out here too long, but nothing was wrong yet so she ignored it. The darkness was the most surprising part - she'd expected sunlight filtering through the leaves, like in the forests she knew, but this density lit up by lanterns was unexpected and beautiful. Honestly, she was so very looking forward to being able to learn more about the culture and practices here and the kinds of things they learned at school.

Everything had been great, up until she realized where she was going to be sleeping.

Ara had told them about two girls named Violence and Azzure, and that Mamori was to be there too (always nice to have a fellow familiar face! And they didn't think they'd seen him since they dyed their hair). She had failed to mention, however, that their temporary dorms were IN THE SKY. Okay, the concept was awesome, the kind of thing they liked to read about in fantasy books, but they themselves had no will - none whatsoever, zero, nada, zilch - to be sleeping anywhere more than three or four meters above the ground, on the second floor of their house. Living in a century-old tree hundreds of meters in the air, half inside the side of a gods-damned mountain, was NOT IDEAL. It did take quite a bit of convincing from Ara for the French-Scottish kid to even make it up there, and once they were up, their eyes stayed glued shut and their breathing way too rapid until they were deep inside the house and not able to see outside.

This was when they began to question why and how they had managed to be convinced to come here. But of course, it didn't end there. Of course not. No, the stupid Hogwarts curse not only had to follow them but also wake her up in the middle of the night.

It's not like she wasn't expecting it, she kept her wand under her pillow. She was hopeful, not stupid. But it was hard to know what to expect, considering the insanities she had witnessed in the past. And especially when this time, it happened to be a weird tentacle tendril-like thing. It had already taken the poor Slytherin forever to fall asleep, terrified of the fact that she was way, way too high up above the ground than was sane for any human being. But of course something had to wake her up.

In fact, it was actually Azzure's voice that shocked them awake, because the freaking creepy ass vines were being sneaky and shady. Honestly, had Mahlioz been any less themselves, they would have sworn aloud in frustration: they had known it! They had known something horrible would happen, and yet here they were. The constricting of the stupid tentacle things around their legs - ew - reminded them they should probably act. The good thing about her frustration was that she had no space to freak out or be scared - this was normal. More normal than being high up in the sky. She'd been through this kind of thing before ("this kind of thing" meaning magical staff not being able to protect their students for some reason), and she was clear-headed when she reached for her wand.

"GUYS, WAKE UP," they yelled, trying to push off the tendrils with their free hand but quickly taking it back when it looked like they were going to try and ensnare it too. Just because she was somehow not paralyzed with fear, didn't mean she was going to let her friends die. Obviously this was dangerous. The only thing they wished was that they could have dealt with it tomorrow morning, after a nice night of sleep to get rid of jet teleportation-lag. But no such luck.

No, instead they were up at what felt like 2 in the morning, in unironed crumpled up green pyjamas and the worst case of bedhead you'd ever seen (their hair had never been this curly and frizzy, the humidity was certainly making itself evident), casting "Relashio!" at a bunch of black vine thingies trying to kill them probably. Gods, perhaps they should have ignored that Hogwarts invitation owl four years ago. Hopefully the spell would inspire some of the other kids to pull out their wands - if it worked of course, which Mahlioz was praying for.

Only a complete idiot would turn down a free trip to a warm southern island right after Christmas break. What kind of masochist voluntarily stays in the Scottish Highlands with the ghosts and whatever professors drew the short straw? To savor the extra helping of bone-chilling cold? To tackle a mountain of holiday assignments in complete isolation? To further ruin their taste buds with Britain's proudest culinary achievement — bland everything? Or maybe they had some rare condition where accepting free things caused them physical pain? Mamori, being neither masochistic nor allergic to good fortune, naturally joined the exodus to Tenusa.

His single-digit count of previous school trip had always been flavored in some way by a medical emergency. The only saving grace was that no one actually died. These were elite schools with elite medical staff who could pull students back from death's door even with just a mere centimeter between them and the afterlife. Besides, Mamori liked his odds. He was a gambling man with a strong faith in his own ability to avoid mishaps, and so far, this year had been good to him. Contrary to the infamous episode of vomiting black liquid and spending days flat on his back in the hospital wing, this school year had been remarkably incident-free. That streak was bound to continue. Absolutely bound to.

The trip presented itself without immediate catastrophe. His roommates operated in the range of "sports acquaintances" to "actually quite familiar faces", which means no strangers, no awkward introductions, and significantly less reason to mind his manners. The feast hit every right note, and the hot springs in the High Houses soothed his muscles, whereas the warm humid climate kept his skin happy enough that he could even reduce the use of his skin care products. The elevated room's view bordered on excessive, with air quality to match. Feeling exceptionally good about life, Mamori had thrown on a short-sleeved shirt and crawled into bed earlier than usual, really looking forward to the next day.

Which was exactly when he made the rookie mistake of lowering his guard.

The pink-haired badger woke to yelling. Azzure and Mahlioz were making enough noise to wake the dead, which would've been more concerning if Mamori hadn't immediately noticed the black tendrils coiling around his lower body, pinning him in place. Ah. Here it is. This must be the mandatory near-death experience portion of the inter-school exchange program, just as expected. "AHHHHHHHHH" Being a team player, Mamori contributed his own high pitched G5 screech to the symphony of chaos, ensuring absolutely everyone in the vicinity was wide awake. Only at that moment, he began to look for his wand which a brief glance revealed had been thrown on top of his trunk post-shower... because of course it was. He made one token attempt to reach for it, arm stretching forward only to be pathetically short by about twenty centimeters. After a short moment to consider this spatial tragedy, he gave up on the plan altogether.

Mentally berating himself for devolving into an absolute meathead, Mamori decided to embrace his inner jock and attempt to muscle his way out of the tendrils' grasp.

Ara's known this was a bad idea the moment she found out her cousin, their whatever friend, and another youngin were going to be with her in the same cabin. But hey, at least she dragged Mahl in this shenanigans to suffer too (not literally but at least she had someone). Now that was something to actually be proud of.

A warm island trip sounded nice. A warm island with the giggle gaggle goo of children absolutely did not. Granted, she taught one of them a nice way to commit arson and knew them half through overhearing gossip with her roommate. But that one had spunk, kinda reminded Ara of her back when she was their age. NOPE. NO OLDIE THOUGHTS HERE. GET AWAY OLD MAN DEMON (@Hanako Tone).

To be honest, the only reason she was sane was Mahlioz—that's it. Ara didn't have the mental capacity to handle tween love lives.

So of course, the universe chose to punish the (somewhat) innocent for sleeping peacefully throughout the night so far.

Ok, her fault for sleeping peacefully. Too peacefully. She let her guard down with a bunch of hormone-filled kids and now stuff was attacking her.

Ara jolted awake with a sharp inhale, her own senses snapping into focus as something cold cinched around her waist and legs. "What the—" she muttered, eyes barely open. Great. Fantastic. Someone deserves an award. Tentacles, just what she wanted at 2 in the morning.

She looked down just long enough to register the inky black tendrils binding her lower half before her face contorted into absolute disgust. Ara rolled her eyes before looking around and seeing the same tentacles go around the other folks in the cabin. Just her luck.

She wasn't a hero type, let's get that straight. She would not be "saving" these fresh pieces of meat from the grinder. Ara wasn't paid enough to do this (she wasn't even paid at all).

Then, the screeching started. Multiple voices, high-pitched Christmas high notes—panicked and excessive as hell.

Fine. She reached slowly for the nightstand, fingers brushing against wood before curling around her wand. Ara suffered in silence as her eardrums got blasted like it was the new year in a big city. Her expression was flat, eyes half lidded, like this was an inconvenience on par with spilled morning caffeine.

Finally grabbing ahold of her wand, she got the energy to say something. "Oh my gawd. Shut the fuck up." Ara snapped, her voice cutting clean through the screaming. “If you’re screaming, you’re breathing. If you’re breathing, you’re not dying. Congratulations.” Her gaze flickered briefly to Mahlioz—still alive and conscious. Good. That was the only status check she really needed. "And if any of you grab me, I will hex you myself."

She shifted her wrist, angling her wand. No wasted time. "Diffindo."

𝓥iolence had enjoyed her stay with Azzure in the Nightmist Estate. Every holiday spent in Paris always felt magical, but with Azzure there, it felt ethereal. The time she spent with her there introduced her to a different Azzure. The more relaxed, carefree one. Yes, the first few days had been a bit awkward but Violence’s family had been extremely understanding and Vi couldn’t be more grateful. Violence had loved spending time with Azzure in the Bloodthorn Mansion as well, showing her every place she had spent countless hours in her childhood. It had been a dream come true for Violence.

Even in Paris, introducing Sébastien to Azzure, watching them bond, had been surreal. But Violence was done with travelling. First London, then Canterbury, then Paris, it had been a lot and to Violence it felt like she hadn’t had a moment to breathe. Being with Azzure had its pros, but it also had cons. Such as, always being a little conscious of how she acted, how everything was kept. It was the first time Azzure was visiting their family after all, and Violence hadn’t wanted Azzure to judge the way they lived. She wanted everything to be perfect for her.

So when the holidays were nearing their end, Violence had actually looked forward to going back to Hogwarts, to get back into studying, she looked forward to her classes and spending time with Avina in her dorm. Hell, she had even looked forward to homework. But of course, when did anything ever go perfectly fine? Her mother told Violence and Azzure that an event was being hosted in Tenūsa and that it would be nice to attend. And when Azzure had been so excited about the trip, she couldn’t possibly say no. So here they were, in the middle of the jungle. The humidity was heavy and Violence found it hard to breathe.

They had been assigned to the High Houses and Violence was just a little nervous about sleeping high up in the air. She knew that the staff would have, obviously, secured the place with magic, making it completely safe. But magic could also be dangerous. Who was to say that the magic wouldn’t make something go wrong. And what’s more, it wasn’t just Azzure and Vi living there. Three more people would be joining them. Violence knew two of them; one had been her tutor for Incendio, Ara Villa, while the other was Mamori Anezaki, whom she knew because of the unofficial games they had participated in before the holidays.

Violence had a bad feeling. Yet, when they spent some time in the houses and Violence saw the stability of the houses in action, she felt a slight sense of relief wash over her. Tenūsa worked its magic and Violence was actually enjoying her time in nature. She would prefer the busy, bustling city over nature, but this was still a good break from there. She had made acquaintance with the other person who would be living there, Mahlioz. ‘Pretty name,’ she had thought. That night, Violence was up till around 1 am. She couldn’t sleep without the constant buzz of the cars, even though it wasn’t heard as much in the Estate. But something or the other was always going on in Paris and here, it was only the chirping of birds and buzzing of the bugs.

She did not realize when she fell asleep when suddenly a scream pierced through the air. She could make out Azzure’s voice in her sleep, but when the others started screaming as well, she got up as quick as she could, only to see nothing. It was too dark but Vi could hear the soft sounds of people shuffling… no, thrashing around. She rubbed her eyes to make them adjusted to the dark and looked around and was startled by what she saw. Thick, black (or at least that’s what they seemed in the dark) vines had spread over the entire floor and above the legs of everybody, desperately trying to claw their way towards their upper half. It also didn’t help that people were screaming at the top of their voices like two year olds waiting to be spoon-fed their gooey food. Violence needed to think, and she needed quiet to think. So, of course, to make everybody quiet, she had to raise her voice as well.

“Everybody, let’s take a moment to really breathe. Thrashing around will not get us out of the vines. So please, I request everybody to keep quiet. We’re not dying.” The eagle so desperately wanted to scream at everybody, but etiquette made her stop. Once everybody had quieted down, she saw Mahlioz cast a Relashio at the vines. That was smart, but she needed to try something else to see what would happen. ‘Think, Vi, think. Incendio? No, that would be too risky, what if the entire place caught fire?’ No no, she had to do something else. She could try Flipendo as well. Maybe the vines would be pushed away from them. But that didn’t make sense since they were caught up in the vines and they couldn’t be pushed away. Violence still couldn’t quite make out her surroundings and decided that before she could actually take any action against the vines, she would light up the house.

Thinking so, she raised her wand at eye level and in a firm tone, said, “Lumos Duo.” Hopefully, no one was right in front of her, or else they were about to go blind for a second. This was exactly the reason she didn’t prefer to attend magical events. They had, consecutively, proven to bring nothing but drama or problems. And what was the staff of Hogwarts and Tenūsa doing? Didn’t they realise that this was life-threatening? That they could potentially be sued by the parents if anything happened to the students, which, Violence was sure, a lot happened. She doubted the parents knew much, though. The witch closed her eyes, wishing to every God that when she opened her eyes, she would be back in Paris, or London, or Hogwarts. Anywhere but here. Unfortunately, there was no such luck. She was in Tenūsa and there was no escaping this.

MODERATION
To say that the immediate reaction of this particular high house had been logical and reserved would be a plain faced lie. In fact the majority of the reactions had been nothing short of theatrical, with screaming, terror and frantic chaos utterly seizing the room until the ever bright and cheery @Ara Villa thankfully asked the mostly younger cohort to pull their heads out of their asses and realise they weren't dead.

Of course one might argue that the others had simply been scared as second years who had not yet experienced the full display of Hogwarts cruelty would likely be. Still Ms Villa was not one for softness, and she certainly hadn't the time for weakness, after all she was a duellist and she was more than determined to get herself out of this situation without banshee wails. As her opposite, the far more compassionate @Mahlioz Evethisawe decided instead to warn her comrades, than besmirch them for their terror. With a great knowledge of the dangers school presented and a sanity that almost wished she had never accepted her place there she readied her wand and using a most excellent spell managed to release herself entirely from the wicked grasp of this plant.

Yet she was not the only one, and although the others took different approaches to the solution, most would fair splendidly. @Azzure Solace proved heartily what it meant to be a Gryffindor as she channelled not only the spirit of the houses brave nature but the ferocity of the lions claws ripping the vines off as they constricted her. Ms Villa, having made her feeling clear decimated the plants around her with a slicing technique Professor Toussaint would have been proud of and Hanako would've undoubtedly failed at producing.

Still not all were so lucky and in saving herself @Violence Bloodthorn endangered another. While the others focused on themselves, Violence attempted something that could have helped them all and surely it had, as many of the plant life scuttered away from the blinding light burning from her wand. Still this entity was not as unintelligent as it looked, and in the retreat of the light it bound harder around @Mamori Anezaki preventing their escape and dragging them closer to the balcony of which it wishes to drag him off. The others would be caught in the blinding light all too focused on their own escapes to shield their eyes that they would not notice as Mamori's mouth became covered by vines and muffled screams went silent.

If they didn't recover their eyesight quickly Mamori would be taken, but losing the light would put them all at further risk. So the question was simple, who's lives were worth more?

FINAL MODERATION OF PART ONE
Standing in for Lawrence in this moderation round to end part 1 of the event!
There were five people in this high house, and yet, not a single movement from any. @Azzure Solace, @Ara Villa, and @Mahlioz Evethisawe were seemingly still blinded by their roommate @Violence Bloodthorn's previous spellcasting, while another one of their fellow high house residents, @Mamori Anezaki, was dragged away by the malicious vines.

Mamori was gone, but the four left standing were free to leave as they wished, their vision returning, because as if satisfied with their kidnapped charge, the vines shrunk back into nothingness and vanished seemingly into thin air. Perhaps the group could proceed to part two and meet up with the other residents of the High Houses...
