It's almost been a year now...
At the back of the Castle where very few seemed to go, Casey stood in the cold and stared broodingly out into the foggy air. The summer was vast approaching yet the air seemed to never change at Ilvermorny. Not for Casey at least. Things haven't seemed to change at all despite so much happening at the same time. Not that he would care. It happened. And now the only thing he cared about was finding something - anything - to lead him to find what he had been missing for nearly the last year.
The cold air bit at his skin yet Casey didn't flinch, moving no more than a mere unbothered blink as he stared off into the mountains. They were eerily similar to the mountains where Nick would take him hiking back home. His mood darkened the more his mind continued to wander into the past, to Nick helping the resilient Casey climb up the side of a cliff in their younger years, to then reaching the top and being greeted with a bed of grass where they watched the clouds together. It took the image of Nick's smile that Casey finally shook his head out of anger, shunning the rest of the memory from his mind. It was almost as if the world around him was laughing at him for his misfortune.
He remembered his face so clearly. His blonde hair slicked back and parted at the side. His retro style clothes that would always make him stand out. His entire wardrobe was gathering dust now that he was gone. Nick always assured his little brother that he wouldn't go anywhere ever since they were little and now look what's happened. Casey knew Nick never meant to lie to him like this but with the way things are looking, he couldn't help but feel betrayed. Grief really did like to disguise itself in different ways.
Casey's fingernails tightened into his arms whilst they were folded. His robes billowed in the breeze as more fog rolled in. Nothing was fazing him however. His stance was as firm as his growing resolve.
His face clouded with conviction as he spoke out to the open air.
"I'm going to find him. Somehow... Some way... And God help any shmucks who stand in my way..."

It would never be quite clear to Elias how June could be basically summer and still cold. With disgruntled airs about him since the ducks were not at the pond today, he walked towards the castle on silent feet, vigilent by instinct but not particularly so.roleplaying as approved inpc elias travers

He came around the back of the castle as usual, and found an unusual presence there. A boy familiar yet wholly unknown to Elias seemed to be in a very deep main character moment. Ah yes, and there was the monologue. It was almost like something out of one of his mom's shows that she liked to watch when she couldn't sleep. With subtitles, obviously, because living life with the subtitles turned on for eleven and a half years has that effect, so when Elias inevitably snuck downstairs for his late night/early morning glass of water (or juice, if he was feeling adventerous), he'd find her sacked out and the sleep timer not yet off and be left to wonder why scriptwriters wrote the way they did.
Anyway.
With a simple lip read, which was greatly confused by a very weird mouth movement not belonging to any word Elias had seen or heard of, he gathered the boy was looking for someone. Oh, he's such a good detective.
"Hey!" he said aloud, how loud he wasn't entirely sure, but all's said and done so. If he had gathered the boy's attention he would sign You need help? and enunciate "help?" since that was the kind thing to do if the other wasn't familiar with the sign. Someone lost?

Casey was so focused on his thoughts that at first he failed to notice that someone had approached him. After a minute he finally acknowledged that another student came up to him; a pretty tall kid, brown hair and bangs, quite vibrant blue eyes and a pencil behind his ear. Casey arched an eyebrow, the slightest change in emotion he'd shown all week. He'd seen this boy in passing between the corridors, he was sure. The boy's voice was loud enough to knock Casey out of his train of thought.
"You're the quiet kid," he said slightly matter-of-factly, recognising him. Not at all trying to be offending, but Casey was making it subtly clear that he was enjoying being on his own as he kept up his cold stance. Interacting with people became a chore when Nick went missing. An aftereffect of grief but ultimately couldn't be fixed, not while Casey was being a stubborn hard-ass.
He read the boy's gestures and with pressed lips, Casey shook his head. "There ain't anything you can help with, bud. Not that it's your problem anyway." He began taking a few steps away from him, intending to walk off entirely soon enough.
"Go spend your time with someone who ain't gonna keep pushing you away." Casey stuck his hands in his pockets as he spoke over his shoulder. He began walking away though with what he knew about the boy, Casey doubted that this encounter would be over any time soon.

Elias fumbled for his trusty satchel and quill which was usually at his side but- oh dear Lord. No satchel, just his quill and oat crumbs in his pocket and the pencil behind his ear from this morning. And, well, the quill was useless without paper... Unless?roleplaying as approved inpc elias travers

Seemingly without warning, Elias plopped down onto the ground and gathered a pile of soft, sand-like dirt to himself in a swift motion, placing his quill at the top.
The instrument was hesitant at first, but scratched the words of Elias' classmate (and housemate, if he was remembering correctly?) into the displaced sediment well enough.
You're the quiet kid. Well no duh, Sherlock. I thought that was common knowledge by now. Elias could only flick his eyes up to the other boy in an almost disapproving look before signing I'm deaf. He thought it was a well enough recognized sign, but he did follow up with cutting his hand across his throat and pointing to his ear, to convey "no hearing." He felt he had already tested his luck with two spoken words, no need to botch everything spectacularly with an unfamiliar phonetic.
There ain't anything you can help with, bud. Not that it's your problem anyway. Go spend your time with someone who ain't gonna keep pushing you away. Elias' brow furrowed. He waited a few heartbeats to affirm the boy was finished before taking up the quill and wiping out Casey's words. He flicked the pencil from his ear and wrote upside-down (a skill he'd picked up over dinnertime conversations here), to where it faced Casey, with the eraser end. Are you sure you don't need help looking for someone? Shouldn't the teachers know who's lost? The seated boy was under the impression that a fellow student has gone missing, and that Casey was being a monologuing, long-suffering action movie protagonist about it. Which, you know, great, have fun while the professionals take care of it.

The boy was innocent. Naïve perhaps, but he definitely had his heart in the right place. It really was at the complete opposite end of the spectrum to Casey's attitude by comparison. It honestly put him to shame. At the same time, Casey could think of a million reasons why he would deserve to be on his own.
He didn't know this kid well but he knew enough to know he was one of the more genuinely nice people in the year, and thus one of the more tolerable for Casey to endure. He had a flicker of a smirk at the curve of his mouth when he retaliated at his comment with a blunt sign. Okay, so Casey was stating the obvious back there. Rather than toss him the formulaic "Broody Moody Casey" routine, he simply shook his head and spoke a lot more gently.
"Point taken. Yeah he's a student, but he's been missing for a long time, bud. Longer than we've been here. There ain't nothing you can do."
Hell, there ain't anything I can do unless I find a goddamn lead...
"And believe me, the teachers know... Not that they're gunna help. They haven't done a damn thing to help ever since he went missing. Well, it happened over the summer so.." It seemed that no one was eager to help Casey track down his missing older half. Instead they'd rather shower him with requests to seek counselling or to simply "let it go." Nick was alive! He felt it with every fibre of his being. If the teachers were going to preach meaningless words then they should stick to teaching - no doubt half the stuff they were spewing Casey would neglect in later life depending on where he would be in the future.
"Bud, trust me. This ain't something to get worked up about." The last thing he wanted, despite all the intolerance he had for people since the incident, was for anyone else to end up like Casey.

Elias had made more than one miscalculation in this encounter, chief among which were the assumptions that this boy's missing person was a current student at Ilvermorny and had gone missing recently. Both seemed to be very untrue, from the other's statements.roleplaying as approved inpc elias travers

Family member? Someone like Lance? Elias' brain buzzed around, tossing up a few possibilities.
Why wouldn't the teachers help? he inquired, pencil making soft scratching feelings as sandy dirt particles pushed against each other under the eraser. Oh. It happened during summer. He scratched out his question quickly, making a flippant gesture with his hand as if to say 'nevermind' before posing a new inquiry. Didn't the police look for him? The wizard police? He couldn't remember what they were called just now. The regular police?
He couldn't believe that a student, a kid like him, could go up and missing and stay missing and no one do anything. He hadn't yet been faced with the tragic odds for missing persons cases, especially cold missing persons cases. Especially especially missing persons in the wilderness. That particular tidbit would remain unbeknownst to him lest Casey divulged it, or he had it in his heart to remember and research once Internet access permitted.
Casey had a lot of anger and frustration. Being deaf meant Elias had to know to read expressions and body language, that was half of signing after all. And Casey, well, he wasn't trying to hide his frustration. Elias, ever the compassionate, wanted to help, but Casey had already made it clear he didn't think there was anything anyone could do. It was sad to see someone else so sad. Are you sure there's nothing I could do? Not even for you?

OOC Note: Sorry it took so long!
As much as Casey wanted to lose his temper with this kid, he really couldn't. For one, he wasn't above putting fists up, despite his built up anger. Secondly, not with a kid who's probably just as much of a pacifist as the next good guy. And for another, the kid himself was nice. Casey wasn't heartless to ignore that.
"Teachers and police won't help, bud. They say the trail's gone too cold for them to keep looking which I find rather bullshit. Makes me think there's more to it that they ain't telling me. But what else can you do when you're half their height eh?"
Casey couldn't stand the reasoning behind the "authorities" to abandon the search altogether. "Accept that he's gone, Casey." As if! You don't just tell someone to give up on their own family member.
Casey mumbled threateningly under his tone. "Heartless jerkoffs..."
He turned back to Elias, his body softening slightly and placing a harmless hand on his shoulder.
"You got siblings, bud? Well, it don't matter either way. Just make sure that whatever family you have, you hold onto them tight. Don't blink too hard because before you know it, they might just disappear. Take it from someone who learnt that lesson after his brother decided to vanish into thin air." He chuckled half bitterly near the end.
"I appreciate that you care, bud..." Nicest compliment of the year so far. "But I doubt there's much you can do. But if you really wanna try and do something, just keep being you."
Casey would never want to admit that he was okay with this boy being in his company. But given the weight that had been eased - even if ever so slightly - it was pretty much a telling sign that Elias was the first guy in a loooong time to somehow find his way into Casey's good books. The thought made Casey laugh quietly in genuine surprise.
"You ain't bad, kid."
