history

Although she was born in China, Scout was not raised there. She tries to tell people this all of the time, only to have her father recount that she actually spent two weeks there after she was born. To give her mother rest, as is customary. But she can't say that she's a fan of Shanghai, the hustle-and-bustle of the city life makes her feel anxious, and the air quality isn't very good. Not that she has asthma, or something like that, but even so- it gets hard for even her to breathe! She prefers the small(er) town her dad's family lives in, over in Fengjing (枫泾镇). It's a water town, and more of a tourist destination rather than a quiet place to live your retirement out- but it's so cool. Scout's not been there in a few years, but she gets calls from her extended family all the time, wishing her a happy new year or a happy birthday. Her mother is why she doesn't live in China- she's well-respected Potioneer in London, and nothing could convince her to give up her job. Not that her father minds, Scout's pretty sure he's just happy to go along for the ride, being a stay-at-home-wizard. Though... he was pretty adamant that if they lived in England, they would absolutely not be living in London. Fair enough. Most of her dad's family lives in China, save for one of his brothers. Tao Nagla, who coincidentally lived in Scotland, which was only a few hour plane ride away from where Scout lived. This wouldn't be important, if it weren't for the fact that Tao's daughter, Asteria, was one of Scout's best friends in the whole world. For a long time they had only met in 枫泾镇 at family events and new years, given that Asteria lived in Egypt for most of Scout's youth. And now, Scout was thrilled that she had a friend that was both close by, and also going to Hogwarts as well. She was so excited for the new year to begin!

first instance of magic

Scout's first instance of magic was pretty rad in her eyes. She was always an adventurer, far preferring to go outside and play in the small forest that was her backyard. Not that she didn't like doing other things, but she was a bundle of energy and everyone around her knew it. It was more beneficial to let her run around and climb trees and chase things, than to force her to sit down inside. And she's good at climbing trees! So good at climbing them. Not so much getting down. Scout could climb the Hyperion without a doubt in her mind that she could do it- but she definitely couldn't get down. It wasn't like she panicked or anything, she'd just lose her ability to calculate where to put her feet. Which is how she realized that she was a witch. She was around seven, so she wasn't climbing anything as tall as the tallest tree in the world, just the oak tree in her backyard. She'd gotten up about a million times, and there was a ladder to help her get down. (Something, something about her father getting annoyed at having to rescue her over and over?) All she'd have to do was put her foot on the ladder, and then she'd be able to climb right back down. Except... that didn't happen. The ladder started to wobble as soon as she put her weight on it, and a fear rose through her chest. Falling from her spot in the tree wouldn't do any serious damage, but she'd definitely break her leg if she fell the wrong way! And it's starting to look like she's going to fall the wrong way. But then she was on the ground, and the ladder fell next to her. It felt like the grass beneath her had turned as soft as pillows, and cushioned her fall. And her legs weren't broken, which was definitely a plus. The rush of adrenaline began to wear off, and Scout bolted inside to tell her dad what had happened.

physical description

Scout is exactly 5'0, 152.4cm. She's been that height for almost six months now, and she's begging for a growth spurt soon. And despite being a dhampir, Scout has brown eyes just like her father. She looks like Baishu in every single way, but apparently she has her mother's face shape, whatever that means. Unlike both of her parents, Scout has short and straight hair. Though, her 妈妈mama was convinced that Scout would end up with the same curly hair she has. Her hair isn't naturally red. In fact, her hair was never supposed to be red. It was one of the weeks her 妈妈, Nina, was out. She was supposed to be out for the next three weeks doing whatever a Potioneer needs to, and Baishu thought it would be a wonderful idea to give into Scout's demands and help her dye her hair red. Her mother had come home a week early to Scout's still vibrant red hair, and had almost blown a fuse. While the dye was temporary, it had taken awfully well to Scout's hair, and was still a pretty shiny shade of red. Nina was not thrilled, and had almost grounded Scout for the rest of eternity. Unlike Baishu, Nina never gave into Scout's puppy eyes and was very upset that her daughter dyed her hair without permission. Though she eventually gave in, Scout will absolutely not forget the fear she felt when her mother threatened to not let her out of the house for a whole week.

mental description

If there is one word to describe Scout Fu-Hai, it is a chatterbox. If you let her, she will go on and on about whatever there is to talk about. She's hyperactive as well, and has periods of time where she will continuously move her body and talk until she has to take a break because of exhaustion. She can't sit still, and she can't stop talking. Not to mention how friendly she is just to be able to talk to people. If there was another word to describe her, it is reckless. She had spent her first year at Hogwarts with the idea in mind that she was going to keep her vampirism a secret, and then she revealed it anyway, having forgotten her own promise. It was for a good reason, considering that she's not particularly good at casting spells, and had no other way to protect herself, but it was still stupid. If there was a third word to describe Scout, it's that she's insecure, although she seldom lets people see it. Getting bullied throughout elementary school took a toll on her self-confidence, and she still has trouble making friends because of the constant "What if I'm being annoying?", she tells her parents she barely even remembers her elementary school to keep them from worrying.

dhampirism

It's her father that she gets it from. Turned into a Dhampir when he was still in muggle school in China, maybe three years before he himself had his own first instance of magic. He likes to tell Scout that getting bit was the first domino in him finding out he was a wizard, though he knows it's not true. His muggle parents were certainly confused, to say the least. On the day it happened, he says he doesn't really remember what had actually happened. All Baishu Fu-Hai remembers is that he was walking to school, stopped to pick up a shiny coin on the ground, and then he was in the hospital. It wasn't a normal hospital, he told Scout. The nurses and doctors had wands and wore funny costumes. Though he knows now that it's just typical wizard garb, he thought it was the strangest thing as a child. The healers kept telling him to lay still, and that he had been hurt by something nasty. It's funny, he's not even sure he remembers anything hurting. He feels guilty, in part because having a child meant that they, too, would suffer from vampirism. Scout's mother knew that having a child with Baishu meant that her daughter would also be afflicted, but she wasn't a coward who would turn away from the love of her life just because of the vampire traits that her daughter and husband would now share. Scout thinks about her hidden fangs a lot. Gaps where her canines would be, it was easier to explain it as a kid, they lose teeth pretty often, but she was getting older, and she wasn't losing teeth at age nine. It still wasn't as noticeable, but Scout was getting to an age where she had started to notice the stares she got. Pale skin, missing canines, dark eyes, the rumors that Scout was a vampire began to circulate around her primary school. Her mother hadn't even wanted to enroll her in a muggle school, but her father insisted. He was muggle-born and went to one, after all. It wasn't like she was a bad student by any means, her teachers always said she was a bright and friendly girl- although she could use a bit more studying. The bullying wasn't the worst it could be, but Scout would notice the stares and whispers around her head. 'Scout can't go outside, she'll burn!', 'Don't let her hear you, she'll bite you and turn you into a vampire too!', and her favorite, 'Let's bring garlic to school to show her what we're made of!'. Childish comments that were really starting to get under her skin. She was always so nice to her classmates! Why were they treating her like this? She was lucky that they didn't try to do anything worse. Rumors began to flare once more that the girl sitting next to her- her parents had encouraged her to bring a cross to school! Not that there was anything wrong with it, but were these adults really so adamant on believing their kids? Muggles didn't even know that vampires were real! Her father pulled her out of muggle school nine months before Scout went to Hogwarts. He promised her that the magic school would be a new start, and that he was sure nobody would notice her teeth or how the sun made her feel queasy if she didn't have a hat on. The damage could be undone, and Scout didn't really take the things her classmates said about her seriously, but still... The future that could be full of ridicule was making her feel uneasy. Sitting inside of the express, fiddling with the hem of her clothes, Scout was making a mental note to keep everything on the down low.

terrible presence

When did it start? Scout would say it started when she was a kid, back when she was attending muggle school. She knew the hated and spiteful looks she got were because all of those muggle kids thought she was a vampire. They'd claim they couldn't stand to be around her, that they felt horrible around her, that the red-bean paste on her teeth was blood. But that was fine, because it was all dripped with mindless fear, baseless accusations. They didn't know she was actually a dhampir. But then she was taken out of muggle school (an idea rooted in both her acceptance to Hogwarts as well as the build-up of the ruthless bullying), and her parents thought it would stop. People around Scout would stop giving her odd glances, ending conversations early, not giving her the time of day point blank. But it didn't. It was like they were aware of some horrible presence that danced around her. Why were people intimidated by her? She wasn't physically imposing, she was average height and while she had a little bit of muscle, she was still smaller than most of the boys her age. And she certainly wasn't some spell-casting genius, her spells seemed to fail more often than not. It eats her alive, what is everyone else seeing that she isn't? She tried to make herself look less imposing, wearing bright colors and always adorning a big smile (coupled with her signature dimples)- no success. The opposite didn't work either, when she tried to blend in and be as average and normal as possible, it still didn't work. What could she be doing wrong? Nobody knew she was a dhampir, so why were they still walking on glass shards around her? She wasn't scary! She wasn't! Fine, whatever, if this 'terrible presence' of hers was always going to stick around- fine! If she was always going to be given nasty looks or spark fear into people around her- fine! If it didn't matter how lonely she got or how hard she tried to look friendly, if people were always going to find her existence to be unsettling then she'd just deal with it. So then... when did she start seeing this disgusting aura around herself? Scout found herself staring in the mirror more often than not. Her eyes would linger on themselves, the dark color becoming eerie when they were once intriguing, or they'd dance over her skin that became paler each passing day, or perhaps they'd lock onto her teeth; anger would flare up each time she elongated her gaze on herself. It was probably only a few months ago. Is this what everyone saw when they looked at her?

it's late out and scout has a sunburn that keeps her from being able to sleep. just as she's thinking about him, zyair appears from the darkness. they share a conversation that greatly eases scout's worry, and she finds herself with a newfound appreciation for him. he seems to be so smart, the kind of guy you'd think to keep secrets but... he doesn't. why is he so patient? why is he so willing?

Throughout Scout's first year, she deals with the constant pressure to hide her dhampirism in order to keep herself safe from bullying and loneliness. She spends the first few weeks dealing with crippling loneliness, and finds comfort in an older student who teaches her the way of 'not being a forever-alone'. Beyond that, the beginning of her first year remains stagnant. She meets a few people in her year and makes a few friends- even almost saves a girl from falling off of her broom. But uh... well, that almost was there for a reason.
Nearing the end of the school year, Scout meets a girl named Emily when the latter tries to sneak out of Hogwarts for a fun trip to the Forbidden Forest. Scout can't just let someone go into the forest (especially a fellow firstie), so she convinces Emily to stay behind by telling her of Scout's vampirism. Which ups the number of people who know that Scout is a dhampir to two (which is much higher than one!)
She also participated in a food fight- which was super fun! Or... well, at least it was super fun until a stupid prefect stepped in and shut the whole thing down! All because someone tossed something in her French toast... hmph. You can always get a new one! At least the punishment was only cleaning, which Scout was more than happy to do.

In the two weeks that Scout had for summer break, she spent it doing absolutely nothing the whole time! It was mostly just her playing outside with Pebble or helping her dad run errands and do chores. Well, that was until she had joined her dad for a trip to London...
Unexpecting to meet another wizard that day, Scout spent the trip bugging her dad about wanting to visit a cute pet store. Instead, he opted to let Scout go into the toy store next door, she could get a cute stuffed animal and he wouldn't have to hear her beg him to go play with the puppies. It was never just playing, she'd always beg for a dog.
Perusing in the toy store, she decided she wanted to get a plush of a yellow dog. But as she was reaching out to get it, her hand and the hand of Zyair touched. Boom! Electric! How the heck did he even know she was a witch? He said he 'recognized her face' but there was nothing recognizable about Scout's face except her missing fangs... So he had to know she was a dhampir, which was totally bad! Fine, fine, whatever. She could worry about that when summer camp would come and she'd see him again for sure!
But then she got caught up with Emily and her own enemy, an Ilvermorny boy with an atrocious attitude. Which, by proxy, made him now Scout's enemy. She was more than happy to fight him for Emily, though. He was such an overarching jerk, like movie-type villain!
