SKELETONS IN YOUR CLOSET - WRITING

A skeleton lived in a girl’s closet.

It’d been there as long as she could remember, from that very first time she set foot into her brand-new room as her parents argued downstairs, exhausted by the chaos that came with moving to a strange house, a strange neighbourhood where they knew nobody and nobody knew them. She’d crept up to the dusty closet and pressed her ear to the oaken door, listening for sounds of an owner. And found it.

One time when her mother was reading her a bedtime story before bed, she asked if she would be willing to read one to the skeleton too. It was lonely, the girl claimed, from having no company for so long. It liked stories about ghosts, she added. But her mother just smiled and turned off the lights.

The years passed and the girl grew up. The skeleton had never once come out of its closet, though she knew it was still there. Maybe it had just grown to prefer its privacy, she thought. She really ought not disturb it.

Then the day came when they were leaving, for a bigger and better house. The girl decided she should say goodbye to the skeleton one last time and opened the closet door. But it was empty, as if nobody had ever lived there at all.
