It was late and Sophia was utterly exhausted, but despite her exhaustion she was wide awake. She had to be, considering the trouble she would be in if she got caught.

She'd gotten Regina's letter, carefully snuck down to the abandoned toilets - which made her slightly uncomfortable given what'd happened to poor Bubba - and even smuggled enough ingredients for a Befuddlement Draught and her cauldron.

All of the preparations were made, so now she was left waiting.

...waiting and wondering.

Regina had said not to ask any questions, but there was still that latent bit of curiosity in Sophia's head. Why did the girl need a Befuddlement Draught? Why did she specifically want to brew it after curfew? And why did she specifically want to be there for the brewing process? She could have just asked Soph to bring the potion, and she'd have gladly done so. This was pretty concerning.

...on the other hand, she really wanted to learn how to duel more effectively. Peri'd given her some good advice, sure, but this was Regina. Sophia looked up to the girl, even as she was slightly intimidated by her mere presence. If Regina was offering lessons, brewing a potion was the least Sophia could do in return.

So there she found herself, waiting in the cold, dark silence, secretly wishing that Regina would hurry up and get there so they could get started. The last thing they needed was for a prefect to find them. She'd gotten in trouble once already, twice was unacceptable.

She tried to ignore the cold stone floor beneath her bare feet, but the occasional shiver did creep through.

"Come on, Reg. Where are you?

Regina had painstakingly taken as much precaution as possible to sneak out of the Gryffindor common room undetected. With her wand in hand - ready to petrify any unfortunate witnesses for the sake of her ultimate goal - the raven-haired witch crept steadily down the staircases and along the halls all the way to the second floor and far from the Lion's Den. Her steps were eerily light and her slim figure slithering around in the dark made her looked more like a ghost than the Hogwarts' ghosts themselves. But she wasn't going to risk getting caught by the patrolling Prefects or any late owl Professors by using Lumos to light up the way. Her eyes and the occasional torch fires on the walls were reliable enough to guide her way.

She hoped Nelson was already at their aforementioned meeting point. Regina truly didn't want to waste any time getting the potion she needed for her plans lest they both get into trouble. If it had been only her, she wouldn't have cared as much. Receiving detention was pretty much a nice little bonus to the new mischief-manager persona she'd adopted - she'd gotten one with the Gryffindor Head of House herself right at the beginning of the school year. What was one more to the list, as long as it build up her rebellious reputation? However, it was dragging another person into this where the problem laid. Regina thought of it as a hassle more than anything, and really didn't want to deal with Nelson having a morality crisis or something if they do end up getting caught. She'd seen the girl burst into tears when a Slytherin Prefect handed her a detention note during the Sorting Ceremony.

Speaking of the devil, Regina mused internally when she finally spotted the silhouette fidgeting near the entrance of the abandoned toilets. Her footsteps were soundless when the Gryffindor walked over and snuck up behind the Ravenclaw with a blank expression, her unnerving presence pouring into the atmosphere - making the air colder than it already was.

"Do not scream."

"Do not scream."

The voice came totally out of nowhere, and Sophia had to literally bite down on her own tongue to prevent herself from accidentally breaking that one simple command. Instead, she just let out a soft squeak and shrank under Regina's gaze.

She'd been around Regina a fair few times, but never like this. Never alone, and never in the dimly lit corridors after curfew. She was suddenly reminded of all the PSAs she'd seen as a muggle about serial killers and kidnappers meeting their targets alone at night, which was ridiculous, but the fear was still there.

As she slouched under the taller girl's expressionless face, she felt like she was in some sort of danger, even if she didn't know what kind. Was Regina going to poison her like Hunter had done to Bubba? Was she going to kidnap Sophia and make her do her bidding or something? Maybe she was actually a vampire! Was she going to drink Sophia's blood? Vampires were real, apparently, and some students were part vampire! Was she in genuine danger?

She gathered up her courage and looked up into Regina's cold, wonderful eyes and noted that they matched her pajamas. Her adorable pajama/hoodie combo.

Feeling slightly self-conscious, Sophia tried to cover the Spider-Man symbol on her shirt with her cauldron, but her pants were still littered with the symbol of her childish glee.

"Uh, h-hi Regina," she whispered with a nervous smile. Nervous because of her fear of getting caught out after curfew, and nervous because of her fear of the things Regina was capable of doing to her. Not to mention her worries about the older girl's intents with the potion they were about to brew.

"Th-this is pretty h-heavy," she whispered again, ashamed at her lack of upper body strength.

"Can we go in? I have all the ingredients, and I'm confident I can brew it," she said, presenting the cauldron to Regina and trying to offer another smile.

This was so stressful.

"Nelson," She greeted in return, eyeing the blue-haired girl's cartoonish pajamas critically with a raised eyebrow, but ultimately made no comment. She'd decided to play nice tonight - she was the one asking for a favour, after all. "You've brought the required ingredients and your cauldron. Excellent."

Regina was pleased to know Nelson followed instructions easily, and even though the poor second-year was visibly frightened and anxious, at least she didn't give their position away by screaming in fear because of the abrupt appearance. With a whispered "Lumos" and a flick of her wrist, the grimy lavatory was lighted up by her aspen wand and Regina stepped inside first, orchid eyes scouring the place. She made a motion with her free hand to beckon Nelson to follow her after walking towards a stall furthest to the entrance, its condition looking not the cleanest but relatively better than the others.

"We'll be brewing the potion in here," She said quietly. "Remember to keep any sound at minimum volume."

The older female ushered her underclassman inside, glancing around to double check there wasn't anyone in their immediate vicinity before closing the stall and turning the lock. Regina then turned around and held her wand above both girls' head to provide adequate lighting, orchid eyes staring at Nelson expectantly.

Merlin, did the Ravenclaw had a hideous shade of hair. She somehow found herself preferring the natural red colour she'd seen Nelson with during last year's broom race. She was suddenly reminded that the subject of her affections, @Faye Simmons, had the same, but now it was an ashy blond. Huh, Regina never knew she'd had a type preference. You learn something new everyday.

Sophia beamed at Regina's praise, momentarily forgetting the nervousness from before.

She clutched her cauldron full of ingredients, supplies, and her textbook tightly to her chest as she followed Regina into the dark bathroom, which was only illuminated by the harsh light of the older girl's want-lighting charm. She stuck as close as she dared without actually touching the girl. Every shadow seemed to move and swirl around her, and she found herself feeling rather jumpy.

She followed Regina with only the slightest hesitation in her step. If she held back too much, then she might find herself trapped in the eerie darkness. If she held back too little, she might accidentally bump into the Gryffindor. God only knew what would come out of that.

"Um, Regina," Sophia whispered as the girl led them further into the bathroom. "W-where are you t-taking me?"

She tried to hide the fearful stutter in her voice, but she couldn't quite cover it up. She briefly toyed with the idea of running. Of escaping this terrifying social situation and running to her dorm to sleep and pretend it never happened. She knew that it wouldn't work, though. If she tried to run, she'd be burnt to a crisp before Regina even had to look at her.

They stopped at the furthest stall and Sophia had to look between the stall and Regina a few times before it clicked.

"We'll be brewing the potion in here. Remember to keep any sound at minimum volume."

Before Sophia could protest, Regina all but forced her inside. If not with her arms, then with her intimidating presence. Sophia just stood there dumbly, holding her cauldron in shaky hands as the older girl stepped inside the - seemingly too small - stall with her and locked the door.

Sophia didn't understand why her hands were suddenly so sweaty, or why she found herself backing up toward the wall, but the only solution in sight was to finish the potion so she could get out of here and maybe go to bed or do anything to get her mind off of the pair of purple eyes that were fixed on her.

She swallowed uncomfortably and placed the cauldron down, looking everywhere except Regina.

"R-right. It- it shouldn't be too hard, just - just, please keep the light up for me?" she asked timidly. She turned to her supplies and tried to focus.

Skurvy Grass, Lovage, Sneezewort. Easy. She fumbled with her mortar and pestle for a moment, but soon she was grinding them into a fine powder. And then, like that, she was finally in her element. The fear and discomfort she'd felt before eased out of her system like a poison being detoxed into nothingness.

Satisfied with the powder, Sophia turned for her mistletoe berries, only to realize that she'd misplaced the knife!

"Reg," she muttered casually as she searched for the knife, "Got a knife, or something with a flat blade I can use to mush these berries?"

Meanwhile she kept up the search, hoping to find the knife. As she glanced around, she set up her cauldron on the ground in a dry spot, putting some parchment she'd brought along under the cauldron to use as a makeshift burner.

"I'll have to be careful with the flame temperature," she muttered as she fumbled for her wand, preparing to light the flame.

The Gryffindor rebel's sharp orchid eyes were fixated on the other girl's movements, watching carefully as Nelson set her potions supplies down and began the first steps of making a Befuddlement Draught. Regina was almost surprised as how quick the younger Ravenclaw's demeanor changed, from a fumbling and nervous mess to an attentive and meticulous Potions prodigy. It would seem Nelson truly did live up to her reputation. Regina was glad she'd picked the perfect individual for her plans. It helped that Nelson was much too easy to manipulate, too. A simple bribe in exchange for her talent, without knowing who exactly was she making a deal with and how her potions were going to be used for inquitous purposes.

Still, she would give credit where its due. As the older girl held her lit wand right above Nelson's work station to help her see better in the dark, she quietly assessed her underclassman's concentrated expression and the ease she had in her motions. Even though she shared quite a few similarities with Faye, Nelson clearly had a passion she was devoted too. Regina almost wished her girlfriend was as passionate about something. It would be a pleasant sight to see.

She was pulled out of her musings when Nelson asked her a question, and she reached into her sweatpants pocket with her free hand to fish out the locksmith's knife she always carried on her person in the scenario of breaking into closed rooms or being disarmed from her wand.

"Use this."

Regina handed the knife over to Nelson handle-first, then shoved her hand back into the pocket as she shifted her weight onto one leg. She didn't want to lean against the grubby wall of the stall. These clothes weren't made of commoner fabric, after all.

"So, how far along are you with your spellwork?" She spoke up, wanting to kill the waiting time with a bit of small talk - and also to gauge the potential of her new mentee. "How many duelling spells have you learnt since the beginning of the month?"

Sophia tried to ignore the older Gryffindor's eyes on her as she worked. Normally it didn't bother her when people watched her brewing potions, but there was something about the calculating gaze Regina was offering that made it difficult to suppress a nervous shudder.

"Thank you," she said with a calmness she didn't feel as she accepted the knife. She didn't bother questioning why Regina even had this knife. It looked like the kind a delinquent would use to burglar someone's home, but, to be fair, they were breaking curfew in the abandoned toilets, so perhaps that was fitting.

She crushed the mistletoe berries with the flat of the knife's blade, using the knife as a makeshift spatula and depositing them into the cauldron. Next would be the tricky part. After returning the knife, she grabbed her wand and placed a small pile of parchment on the floor, aiming her wand at the parchment.

"Incendio!" she said as softly as she could manage while still casting the spell. It wasn't the most impressive example of her spellcasting, but the flames did escape her wand, and the parchment did catch fire, as she intended. She lowered the cauldron onto a makeshift rack fashioned from bits of rubble from the stall. It was positioned just high enough above the flame that it wouldn't get too hot.

"I'd be careful with that blade, by the way. It had mistletoe juices on it, and they can cause horrible stomachaches."

She tapped her feet on the ground, waiting thirty seconds.

"So, how far along are you with your spellwork? How many duelling spells have you learnt since the beginning of the month?"

Sophia blushed as she recalled the hard work she'd put in even in just the first week of classes.

After being knocked out in her first ever duel - even though she wasn't the first to be knocked out - Sophia had resolved to improve her spellcasting, and that involved learning more spells on top of trying to master the old spells she'd known. As a result, she'd practiced assiduously.

"Well..." she trailed off, unsure if she should even mention the spells she'd been trying to learn. She wasn't very confident with them yet, but she had managed to learn a few...

Pondering, Sophia added the water to the cauldron then lowered it closer to the base of the flame to increase the temperature. Giving the cauldron three clockwise stirs, she tried to look at Regina without appearing too terribly nervous.

"I, uh, I sort of managed to cast Finite Incantatem, but I'm horrible in Charms... And Defense... And Transfiguration..." she muttered, realizing how pathetic she must seem. She didn't excel in any classes. In fact, she'd almost failed several of them last year. Well, she was decent in two classes, come to think of it.

"I, uh, learned another spell in Herbology. I'm a bit better in that class... One sec."

She lifted the cauldron a bit higher above the flame on the rubble-rack to lower the temperature and began to slowly add the fine powder she'd grounded earlier as she gave five slow counter-clockwise stirs. She scrambled for her wand and gave it a wave over the cauldron.

"Uh, we have about an hour now. Forty-five minutes if you're in a hurry, but it'll be a bit less potent. Now, where were we... Oh, right!"

She readied her wand and pointed it at an empty space in the stall, just a bit away from them.

"Uh, you might wanna have your wand ready..." she said, knowing that Regina of all people would be quick enough to step in with an Extinguishing Charm.

She took a deep breath, trying once again to ignore the withering gaze on her. She would have loved to ask Regina to relax a bit, to make things a bit less nerve-wracking, but she knew it wouldn't do any good, so she didn't bother. After clearing her throat, Sophia managed a clear, very textbook-esque, "Incendio Duo!"

To her immense relief, not only did she manage to cast the spell, but it was her best attempt yet! The green flames had practically begged for release, and she'd released them in a potent, controlled manner! Why couldn't she do this all the time?

"I like this one, 'cause it matches my eyes," she said, beaming proudly at Reg.

She'd done it. She'd successfully cast an advanced, second-year spell! Now, with Regina's guidance, who knew what else she'd accomplish?

The future was looking bright, but first she had to brew this potion, and that meant spending about an hour alone, locked in a bathroom stall, with Regina Miller.

Oh my.

As Nelson began to list out the subjects she was currently struggling with, Regina began to wonder if it was a lost cause. How could she expect to successfully train a girl who claimed to be horrible at the classes where most duelling spells were taught? The sour expression on her face betrayed her true thoughts about the matter. It seemed Nelson was only good when anything Potions was involved.

This was going to be quite a challenge. They had a lot of work to do if Nelson wanted to improve before the next duelling season started. But Regina was nothing if not a perfectionist at everything she did - even at being a rebel - and she'd make sure to be an adequate mentor. After all, she was one of the most refined duellist of her year.

The Gryffindor's head perked up when Nelson prepared to cast her magic, and her eyes widened ever so slightly when the potent Fire-Making Spell shot out from her wand and temporarily lighted the entire room up in bright green. Regina felt her heart and soul thrilled at the sight and aura of her signature spell.

"Not bad...for a Muggleborn, that is," She said, not really a praise but not an insult, either. "Incendio happens to be my favourite. Its stronger variant even more so."

Perhaps it wasn't truly a lost cause, in the end. Regina knew her eyes hadn't deceived her when she'd observed Nelson's first duel during summer camp - the girl indeed had potential. It just so happened that she was clumsy with her magic because of her Muggle upbringing. She just wasn't used to it, especially the more offensive kind of spellwork. No matter, she'd learn them soon enough from the Lioness' guidance.

Now that the only left they needed to do was wait, the third-year straightened her posture as a serious look shadowed her face. Orchid eyes glowed almost eerily from the faint Lumos on her wand as the atmosphere suddenly shifted.

"Then, we shall have a little conversation as the potion simmers. I want you to know that I witnessed what happened at the Ravenclaw table during the Welcoming Feast. The fault did not lie entirely upon you, but I'd still prefer if you refrain from behaving like that in public from now on," She scolded. "If you are going to break the rules, at least have some secretion."

For all the flaws she had, Regina was not a hypocrite. She wasn't admonishing Nelson for blatantly attacking another student - it was the fact that she'd brought humiliation onto herself by doing it in front of everyone. She didn't want to hang around goody-goodies like the likes of her cousin @Adelaide Barlowe, but she didn't want to be associated with anyone who'd embarrass themself publicly - and in consequence embarrassing Regina by association.

"If you are to be my mentee, do not disappoint me by humiliating yourself. And for the love of Merlin, do not pick a fight with my girlfriend. I do not want to be caught in the middle of whatever childish conflict you two have."

Sophia beamed under Regina's lukewarm compliment. It wasn't much, but not a lot of people complimented her, so she would take it and wear it proudly.

Regina Miller had said she wasn't bad!

Still, Sophia couldn't pretend not to notice the slightly disappointed look on Regina's face when she mentioned her performance in most of her classes. It was the same look her grandma had given her for just a split second when she'd explained the grading scale to the older lady and showed her report card off. She'd been so proud of her Potions and Herbology grades that she hadn't even considered how embarrassing her other grades would be.

"I'm not a total idiot," she muttered as she stared at a particularly interesting square of stone on the floor. "I memorize the wand movements, and I know all about Iotas and stuff. I just - I struggle with incantations 'cause of my accent, and my tongue gets tied when I try to mimic the English-English accents. The written portions of my homework are always top-notch..."

She sat down on the floor and began to regret not bringing her comic books along. Sure, she wasn't alone this time, but she was afraid that if she was left to her own devices for conversation she'd just make a fool of herself.

Fortunately, Regina was more than willing to do the initial talking.

Unfortunately, Sophia wasn't too keen on the subject.

"I almost never break rules!" she argued, looking up and making eye contact with Regina for the first time while she wasn't actively brewing a potion. She still felt a slight chill going down her spine, but the indignation fueled her words. "It was self-defense! If a doxy attacked me in the Great Hall, I'd still defend myself. It's no different than me defending myself from that hag-"

Sophia paused.

"Your girlfriend?" she asked.

That didn't make any sense at all. First, Regina could do so much better than that troll of a girl, @Faye Simmons. Second, why would Faye be upset about Sophia talking about her girlfriend? It wasn't like she'd said anything bad. If someone complimented Sophia's boyfriend, she'd be ecstatic.

"Why did she attack me?" she mused thoughtfully. "All I did was tell her about how great you are and how you saved me on the train..."

It was a mystery, to be sure. Maybe Regina would have some insight?

The Gryffindor rebel merely cocked an eyebrow when the underclassman retaliated, audaciously raising her voice while the wariness and fear in her eyes were still prominent. She internally commended Nelson for daring to look straight at her as she retorted - not a lot of people was brave enough to do it and not received a threat or her aspen wand to their neck.

However, it was when Nelson stuttered at Regina's verbal acknowledgement of her relationship with Faye - followed by a confused question - that the older teen realised the root of the problem. The nerve under her right eye twitched, indicating her annoyance. This bloody idiot.

"You fool," Her eyes narrowed, staring at the blue-haired Ravenclaw with a 'are you bloody serious right now' look. "Have you not heard of the idiom 'there is no smoke without fire'? There are certain people who do not appreciate others talking about their target of affections right in front of them. They might get the wrong idea."

In hindsight, Regina herself hadn't anticipated Faye to be the jealous type. She'd always seemed so whimsical and air-headed, hardly anybody would believe her to become possessive of anything. Knowing Nelson, she probably didn't compliment Regina with an ulterior motive of angering her Housemate. The Lioness was more or less aware how the Muggleborn had quite the admiration for her, but perhaps that was what triggered the other Ravenclaw. She knew her partner had a special condition which made her irrationally lash out sometimes, and poor Nelson had simply caught Faye in her bad mood.

Nonetheless, Regina did not want to deal with two petty second-years interpersonal conflicts. She had enough drama going on in her life as of now, thank you very much. Since she was associated with both of them, she'd just have to make sure they get along in her presence. And she told Nelson exactly this much.

"I do not wish to be responsible for any fight or argument you two get into from now on," She declared in a serious tone. "Either you learn to be civil out of respect for me, or I shall force you. You do not want that second alternative, believe me."

She had pretty much gave the same warning to her own girlfriend a week prior. Very few people had witnessed a truly furious Regina Miller. She hoped for both Faye and Nelson's sakes that they never had to.
