xxxxxxxxIt was with a joyful grin and triumphant ‘yippe ki-yay’ that Maggie realized that she was older than June Selwyn. She had suspected it, of course, seeing as her friend’s name was, well, June, but she supposed that parents often decided to get freaky and name their children freaky names. Y’know, the name Autumn for a child born in October. The name Summer for a child born in December. It was cruel. And Maggie had quite the preconceived notion of what pureblood parents was (hint hint, the answer was cruel), so yeah, she had maybe sort a kinda assumed that June’s parents had named her so because they were, like, crazy.

It was honestly kind of a relief when Maggie received the invitation and her greatest fear was put to rest.

Plus, Maggie now had official confirmation that she was older. Just a few months older, mind you, but March to June was no laughing matter.

This marked the second birthday party that Maggie had been invited to in the last few months, which, if you asked Maggie, was an unqualified success. Two birthday parties! Look at her! Little miss popular over here! And yes, it would’ve been far easier to just tell June ‘I will be at your party’, but that was just no fun. Despite the fact that they saw each other quite often (whether it be through force, AKA Maggie popping up wherever she felt she should be welcomed, or through June’s own meticulous planning), Maggie thought that there was just something so classic and intimate about writing letters.

Plus, she’d just found an old hot pink glitter pen in the bottom of her trunk from months earlier and figured she’d send some super awesome letters with it.

So Maggie had set about writing an RSVP letter, to be delivered to June Sewlyn at breakfast (or, rather, under her door because Maggie had been missing breakfast due to her affinity for sleeping in).

TRANSCRIPT | June, I will be at your birthday party with a special surprise. I did have an idea, actually! What if we all dressed up and had a vampire baseball game on the grounds? Like Twilight, remember? Also, is Benvolio invited? Love, Maggie.

Signed, sealed, delivered.

And the glitter pen worked just fine, thanks.

Dear June (insert a clandestine middle name, perhaps, or an equally clandestine title of nobility unknown to my acquaintanceship) Selwyn,

Might I be granted permission to do so during the stampede of letters I’m certain you’ll receive in reply, I hope you’ll allow me to let this RSVP serve several functions; first and foremost, of course, would be the confirmation of attendance that a Répondez s'il vous plaît is meant to convey, but I mean to thank you for your kindly response to my own birthday party’s invite. It would be improper–plain revolting, even–for me to not do so, especially when I glance upon your perfect penmanship once more. Though our marvelous meetings are nestled in between days and often intruded on by featuring that Maggie Hawkins girl who I’ve yet to really get to know under all that Maggie Hawkinsness or our good friend Shawn, they are still spectacular and have left a good impression on me. I’m not exactly a popularity end-all, be-all within any layer of the school’s social system, but I thought I’d let you know.

Now, believe me, I will be bringing a gift that will shake you to your bones in the best way possible. Or maybe it will shake the castle around your bones.

(Extend my dearest apologies to your entire family for that joke.)

I fear my homemade Monopoly set’s gone to the wind by now, but I know you’ll have some great things planned for us. It’s only right we return the favour in one way or another, so expect to see another suited-up Merlin as my plus one. You know, if that's allowed. Happy birthday, Selwyn, can’t wait to see you there!

Are you almost twelve already? How exciting! I should absolutely love to attend your birthday party. I remember the birthdays we celebrated together when we were younger. How much everything has changed since then. You've grown into such a lovely person, and I am proud to be able to call you my friend.

I would absolutely love to come to your birthday party! Honestly, it's pretty crazy how much time has flown and how much everything has changed since we were younger. Thanks for inviting me! I sure love a good party, and it's even better if it's to celebrate you. Henry and I have plenty of games in our room, so I can bring some. I got Jenga, Battleship, you name it! I think losers should answer an embarrassing question about themselves because I dig the deets.
