Draven was leaning against the wall of the owlery, a carefully penned letter gripped tightly between ice cold fingers. Green ink had exploded all over his hands, leaving swirled imprints over the heavy scrollwork. His blood felt like lead, flowing thickly through his body, muddling up his thoughts and leaving him dizzy and lightheaded.

Dray had come up to the tower in hopes of sending the letter, as clumsily as it had been written. With its shaky emerald writing and badly stamped in seal, silver wax having dripped across the side like a tear. It was oddly appropriate, how badly it had turned out. Crumpled and stained, and everything a letter written by someone whose last name was 'Mirador' shouldn't have been.

And there he was, standing frozen with it in hand, staring through the wall before him.

They'd been good. Juni and him. After months of tentative words and looks, after having chipped his quill and written so many letters the owls had grown tired of them, they'd been together. He'd put his arm around her once, and she'd leaned into him, allowing herself to be folded into a hug, eyes closing of their own accord.

And that was about as far as they'd gotten.

Draven surveyed the letter. It was full of thoughts he hadn't been able to put into words, the result of hours spent looking blankly at parchment, a bitter taste in his mouth. The dream of what could have been, had they gotten anymore time, floating around his head. But they'd had no more time. He should have been angry. Sad. But all he felt was empty. A gap in his chest that had started with a letter from Juni, and that continued to grow with each moment they spent apart.

Draven stepped to one of the windowsills, the sound of ripping paper lost in owls shuffling about, covered up by the howling of the wind as it stumbled into the owlery.

It didn't take much to destroy things. Sometimes, time was enough. Gnawing at people and things, setting into crevices and weaseling its way into wixes' hearts. Other times, a few words did the trick. Tore people apart, put up walls that sprang up and out of nowhere. In this case, it was fire.

Flames licked up the corners of shredded letter, consuming hours of Draven's life. Juni was gone. He'd hoped it was a joke, coming back into school. That she'd laugh and say 'April is fools' or whatever silly muggle tradition happened on April 1st. But it hadn't been a joke, and he hadn't dreamt up the conversation, and she hadn't been at the Ravenclaw table alongside the quidditch team.

He hadn't gotten a chance to tell her. To show her the letter that claimed him as part of the Slytherin quidditch team. Time had run out.

Blue gray smoke rose from the ruined letter, twisting about in the wind, floating high above he castle grounds. He wouldn't send it. Not that, nor anything else. There was no point in sending letters, if he never got a response. And something told him Juni had more important things to worry about than her ex boyfriend.
