When: Sunday, January 23rd, 2022 at 14:00
What: @Juniper Kelly and @Draven Mirador serve detention
Where: In an otherwise empty study room
As she had promised they would, notices had been delivered to each of her problem students later in the evening after they had returned from their illicit Hogsmeade visit.
Good evening.

As a reminder, you were found socializing in the Hog's Head on the afternoon of January 22nd, 2022. Per the warning you received at the time of notice, you have received detention for breaking the following school rule:
— "First-Years and Second-Years may not enter Hogsmeade."
You are to fulfil this detention on the afternoon of January 23rd, 2022. Please arrive at the Study Hall at 14:00 hours.

Kind regards,
E. Decipio
Prefect of Gryffindor
On the day of the detention, Evelynn had arrived early at the appointed room to await their arrival. It was the first time she had ever actually had to dole out a detention of her own, and she hadn't had long to think about what exactly to do for it. There had been plenty of stories shared amongst the prefects of some rather crafty errands required of rule-breakers, and her own inclination had been to follow suit. There were different strategies, she supposed, in developing a detention: humiliation of the offending party; amusement of the prefect; stark discomfort to dissuade repeat transgressions...

All were viable in their own way, she supposed, but none of those options had really stood out to her. She wanted it to be meaningful. She wanted them to learn something of their folly, and to develop their own character and independent thinking to come to their own decision to avoid breaking the rules again in future. Wishful thinking? Perhaps. But she wanted to try.

"Good day," she greeted them when they had arrived. The room had been entirely cleared but for three small desks with their accompanying chairs, spaced evenly across the width of the room. Her hands parted and she directed each of them to a seat. "You will be serving detention with me this afternoon. There is no specific time frame. Rather, I have set each of you a personalized task. At your desk, you will find a number of rolls of parchment, quill, and ink. You have been provided a writing prompt at the top of each roll. Your task is to fulfil that prompt as required. Once you have completed each of them, I will read them over to ensure they are satisfactory, and then you may go."
Juniper's Prompts
1. A letter to Mister Stevenson outlining his good qualities
2. A letter of apology to Mister Mirador for disrespecting his right to say no
3. A letter to Professor Iwasaki outlining your wrong-doing, why you were wrong to do so, and an apology
Draven's Prompts
1. A reflection on how Hogwarts "is a bit much sometimes"
2. A reflection on the important of self integrity
3. Strategies for how you will stand your ground in the future against suggestions by friends for reckless actions

One word; detention. How fair was that?! Not fair at all. Juniper refused to believe that this prefect has never snuck out to Hogsmeade before her third year. Almost everyone has done it, right? It's a thing, a tradition. All the fun kids do it, at least. Maybe this prefect was never fun... that would explain her perfect manner. The way she held authority in her voice and stance... Juniper couldn't stand it. Rule followers. Disgusting. The thought of detention annoyed her so much that she wanted to anger the prefect, to get a reaction from the Gryffindor. She almost considered wearing her laziest clothes ever or showing up late, but decided against it. She didn't want to leave Draven hanging anyways. It was her fault that he was in this predicament. No, instead she put on her oversized Holyhead Harpies jumper and her acid-washed Jeans, grabbing her baseball cap a bit aggressively and holding it out for her ferret to leap in. She tipped the hat on her shoulder and let Poppy crawl off, then shoved the hat on her own head. She turned the cap backward as she stormed from the common room, visibly annoying. All the way to the Study room, she grumbled angrily in Irish.

"Stupid prefects..." She repeated among other things... and she also said a few colorful words. "Fun killers... Don't know how to live their life." She turned on her heel around the corner. "Just because they're stick in the muds doesn't mean everyone else has to be- " She turned to the hall where Draven was supposed to be. "Hey, Draven." She held her hand out and grabbed his, then continued her angry walk. In the presence of Draven, she switched back to english. "This is SOOO stupid. URGH!!! " Whatever they were going to do, it wouldn't be fun. This would be her first detention in the wizarding world. Her mother would NOT be happy. "They better not tell my mam about this one."

To the study room, she was told. "To our doom we go!" She said, defeated as of now. She kicked the door open, causing it to knock into something. She considered not saying anything, and debated it as she looked into the eye's of the prefect. She casually glanced at where the door had hit the wall. "Oops." She walked forward and looked around the room at the desks, already disliking this. Desks were never a good sign, especially since they have parchment on them. Fart. She thought, annoyed. She marched to the middle desk so she could be next to Draven either way. When she sat down, she tilted herself to the side a bit so her back was to Cody. She grinned at Draven and picked up a quill, making a silly face before reading her parchment.

UGHH, essays. She hated those. Outlining Cody's good qualities? Greaaatttt. She had to be really wordy with this, but vague.
Cody Stevenson, 11 years old, is the only person shorter than me. He's a Hufflepuff, Hufflepuffs are SUPER nice and loyal. Or so they say. He isn't very loyal... okay maybe he is. But he has a VERY weird way of showing it. One of his good qualities is that he's never a bore. He threw popcorn on me once, it tasted pretty good despite the fact that it was all over. He also set my skirt on fire once! That was fun, too. I made a friend out of that situation. Her name is Samantha. So I guess he brings people together over their annoyance with him. That's pretty good. He... is a creative kid. I guess, but his creativity is VERY stupid and silly. His excuses are awful but I respect (not really) his attempts to lie out of trouble. He's not very good at lying, but I suppose that can be good. That's another good trait. Another thing is that he was my first best friend, before all the drama. So, clearly, he is sort of interesting.

He's very... loud. Not as loud as me, that's impossible. But being loud can be good! He's good at spellcasting I suppose.

(I tried to sound like Juniper in that)

"What next? HA" An apology to Draven. She smirked.
Dear "mr. Mirador" I'm SOO, VERY DEEPLY, sorry. Like, super sorry. Yeah, I disrespected your right to say no and that's so mean of me. I'm such a bully, I know. But hey, now that we're in detention together... more bonding time? Let's get some treats after this because I'm so very sorry. Yes, you didn't deserve it Mr. Mirador. You're such a handsome gentleman who doesn't belong in detention. I pray your VERY STYLISH outfit doesn't get ruined by the depressing dust from the room. This is a study room after all, I doubt it's used much. And this chair is very uncomfy, I hope yours isn't. You should be sitting in a throne where people serve you hot cocoa and read you Edgar Allan Poe readings. Anyways, I have to write 200 words to "Mr. Mirador" about how sorry I am. But 200 might not be enough because I'm super sorry. Next time tell me to shut the hecka doodle doo up and tell me that you said no. And no means no. I can't promise that I won't get angry, but you should do it anyway! You can just yeet me into a wall if I still argue. Okay, I'm super sorry.
The whole time she wrote this, she giggled and tried to hide her laughs.

She looked at the next prompt with a grin still on her face.

....oh.

oh no.
Dear best head of house in the entire world, my name is Juniper. I'm a very good student, I get mostly O's and I always get my homework done in time. I never annoy you, mainly because I'm scared of you, and I've never had detention before. Until now. So what I'm saying is that I'm a good student. however I made a big mistake. I broke a single rule and now I have to write three essays. I think I deserve it, or I do in the eyes of others. I don't think I do. But I'm sorry for being a such a bad student just this once. I put a bad name on Ravenclaw, even though no one will know about this I think. I... it's so awful to say. I snuck into Hogsmeade with my friend and cousin. It was my cousin's idea and his scary owl wouldn't leave me alone anyway. I really had no choice to say no. Last time I got mad at my cousin he set me on fire. Anyways, I forced my VERY CLOSE FRIEND to come along. Draven Mirador. he had no choice either, I'm very pushy. SO not only did I put myself in danger, I put my friend in danger. I'm sorry.
She took the essays to the prefect. "I'm not much of an author."

Dray showed up to detention in way too good a mood for what it entailed, a flask of pumpkin juice in hand and a few lemon drops stashed away in his jacket. The usual fancy clothing was gone, replaced by a simple white T-Shirt and faded black jeans. Detentions usually meant one thing: cleaning. Draven Mirador wasn't about to crawl on the floor while dressed in a suit, no matter how old the suit was.

Still, stripped of his heavy cloaks and jewelry it was hard to recognize the boy.

He'd tied his hair up in a makeshift manbun, pinning away the stray ends with a few hairpins he'd stolen from Avery, vowing to sneak away to a barber as soon as he could. There was a shop in Hogsmeade, but he didn't trust anyone but Mr. Antonio around his hair.

He looked...unremarkable. That was the word. Just another 12 year old boy, with his too long limbs and too long hair and too gray eyes. Detention wasn't the place to be making a fashion statement.

In a way, him and Juni matched.

And he was glad for it. For no sooner had his eyes landed on the tiny girl's angry form, that she'd linked their hands and practically marched him down the hallway, tearing him away from his corner and his book, stringing him along like she had the first time. Except unlike the first time, she'd sent the door flying into the nearby wall with a hefty kick, old doorknob slamming against a stack of chairs and complaining loudly in a deep baritone voice.

To his dismay, they were greeted with desks instead a bucket and a mop. Juni claimed the middle spot, sparing him the displeasure of having Stevenson by his side. And considering how hard it had been not to strangle the other boy the last time they'd spoken, he was grateful for the lack of opportunity.

The prompts weren't terrible either. Dray took a deep breath, picking up the quill.
Hogwarts has an average of 140 students in every year. If you add that up across the grades, it results in over 1000 people. That is ignoring staff and ghosts. There are 14 teachers, and 20 ghosts. It makes sense that a huge building housing so many people would be overwhelming, especially considering all these people have magic at their disposal, and most of them aren't exactly adept in using it. Hogwarts has no privacy. The bathrooms usually hold at least one student crying about something or other, and if someone doesn't get tossed into the lake at least once during the week, that's considered a successful week. My house was empty as I was growing up, and after years spent being able to get up when I want and go where I want, it's been hard to establish a routine that will not make me or anyone else go crazy; when you're trying to not step on any toes, it gets significantly harder when you have to worry about over 1000 people's toes. Being a student at Hogwarts demands that you are 'on' all the time, and as an introvert it's hard to not get drained out by this. Walking around Hogsmeade gave me a chance to clear my head, as no one expected anything from me. It was a good break if nothing else.
The Miranda Webbster Dictionary defines 'self integrity' as 'being true to your values and what you stand for in life'. Self Integrity isn't always good however, because while staying true to one's values is always admirable, the said values weren't actually mentioned. My ethic moral code may be different from yours, and seeing as what society considers 'good' or 'bad' fluctuates throughout time and even throughout one's neighborhood, sticking to predetermined values and being unable to adapt to change in the face of adversity may actually get in one's way. Sure, self integrity is great when it comes to things most people in society have labeled as 'bad', as it can prevent iffy situations from getting out of hand, and help keep people accountable for their actions. However, being able to recognize when sticking to one's moral code may cause more harm than good is a valuable skill. Being able to stand your ground when you know something is wrong is important - that's how protests start, that's how change is made. That's how revolutions triumph. If enough people refuse to sway from their ideals, they will succeed in creating change - be that change for the better depends on the people.
Easy enough, he wasn't about to complain.

Ugh. His hand was starting to cramp up.
STRATEGIES FOR HOW I WILL STAND MY GROUND IN THE FUTURE

1. Avoid people who would suggest I do anything stupid or dangerous.
2. Make schoolwork a priority, as my future hinges on how well I learn the coursework at Hogwarts
3. Use the acronym THINK

T - is the person TRUSTWORTHY
H - is it HARMFUL
I - is it ILLEGAL
N - is it NECESSARY
K - is it KIND

4. Understand that the rules are set in place in order to protect the students, and as such breaking them is not only unsafe but it's also making the teachers and prefects work harder than they necessarily should.
5. Have a set of progenerated excuses I can use in order to get out of uncomfortable situations. Some excuses could be:
* I have homework
* I am studying for an exam
* I promised [x] I would do [y]
* I'm stuck in Herbology all afternoon
* I have to take Deimos to the chemist
* I'm too tired

6. Be honest. 'I don't feel comfortable doing [x], because I'm not in the mood for a howler from my dad, or my mother trying to trespass school property'
7. Simply say 'No', even if it is Juni asking me.
Draven set the quill down, flexing his hands painfully. He needed to get a self writing quill soon, otherwise he wouldn't be able to hold on to his bag long enough to pull his books out of it.

Sitting back, he glanced over at Juni, waiting for her to finish. His essays were written in a careful hand, signed at the bottom with the dramatically swooped 'D'.

"Well it's been lovely, Ms. Decipio, but I'll be taking my leave now." Draven smiled in the prefect's direction, setting the essays before her and offering his arm to Juniper.

As the detentionees arrived, Evelynn lofted her chin, but held her tongue. It was only too clear just how unimpressed Miss Kelly was about the whole affair, going so far as to slam the door open and mutter irately beneath her breath. Seeing as no real damage had befallen school property, however, she let it slide, reining herself in with a pursing of her lips and silently scrutinizing gaze that followed the students as they took their seats. And, thankfully, no real objection had been given about the assignment.

There was also a certain level of satisfaction in noticing a distinct absence of joy at the sight of the desks. Granted, she did have to eat her own smug thoughts on that when giggles erupted at centre aisle and the ginger seemed entirely too pleased with her task. Still, Evelynn kept to herself, seated on a table at the fore of the class, legs crossed at the ankles and a book open in her lap to read as they worked: the very picture of a schoolteacher, really. All she was missing was large brimmed glasses.

When the shuffling of a chair and subsequent footsteps suggested the conclusion of one detention, she looked up to see Miss Kelly's approach. "I held no expectations of skill with the pen," Evelynn replied when the girl presented her mini-essays. Evelynn scanned the contents. Lips resumed their typical thin-lined presentation within just a few lines. Well, the girl had called it right. She wasn't exactly much of an author. But it wasn't a lack of skill with the written word, or inability to express herself that made it so. The prompts were positively dripping with sarcasm and it was only too evident that she really hadn't taken the task seriously at all.

Part of Evelynn wanted to toss the lot of them into a fire and send her immediately to the hospital wing to clean out latrines with a toothbrush for the rest of the night. She quickly shoved down that reaction, however. It was a flare of indignation, she knew. A knee-jerk reaction. How could she have expected someone to take as much care with their word as she hoped they would when they hadn't taken an ounce of care for their own safety when breaking the rules in the first place. She'd trapped herself in wistful thinking and set herself up to fail from the start if she wasn't willing to accept anything less than perfect. And so, with a resigned breath, Evelynn collected the first and last notes and put them aside. The second, however, she held back out to Miss Kelly.

"I believe you missed the point of this one, but perhaps that is my mistake for not spelling it out. You denied an individual's right to say no. You stole their autonomy and coerced them into an action they did not originally want to do. I did not ask you to praise this individual and speak of his accolades or why he should be seated on a throne, Miss Kelly." Her tone softened, eyes shifting between each of Juniper's own as she lowered her voice so only the two could hear. "I really want you to think on this one for a moment. How would you feel if someone tried to get you to do something that you wished not to do? How would it feel to you if a friend ignored your concern and discounted your right to say no, and pressured you to do it anyway? How would you have felt if another explosion had transpired, or SCAR had come through, or the Hog's Head drinks had been spiked with poison again and your friend had been injured or died? Because you coerced them to go. I want a real apology. One that reflects the actual severity not only of the situation, but the disrespect of the friendship."

Then it was Mister Mirador's turn. When eventually he stood to vacate his seat, Evelynn glanced up to see him bee-lining it for the exit. "Not quite so fast, Mister Mirador," she intoned, the lilt of her voice beckoning him to stop in his tracks. In a swift movement, she eased herself from her table seat and rose, moving immediately into a step without pause. Her path carried her smoothly to his desk where she plucked up the assignments and flipped through them on her way back to her own table.

The first she set aside without comment or expression. She appreciated the thought he had put into his answer, and how personalized he had been when writing it. It certainly raised some concerns, however, but none she was prepared to address right there. She would have to think on it, and perhaps seek him out another time for a private conversation. The second...what was it with the second questions? He hadn't answered the question she had intended, challenging the concept with contesting views rather than responding to the obvious. On one level, it irked her. On another, she had to admire the thought he had put into it and the care with which it had been written. The third, however, brought a smile to her face.

"I would like you to take this with you, please," she stated, holding the third piece of parchment out to him as she poised once again on the edge of her table. "Then you may take your leave."
